Reflections on the St. Joseph’s Prep National Team Honor Board and its unveiling.By Chris McElroy ‘84

The fact that the Prep has been represented on the U.S. National Team (NT) to the breadth and depth it has is extreme-

ly im¬pressive. It was mentioned recently, and it will be assumed as fact, that no other high school can claim as many

representa¬tives on the NT. This speaks to the quality and quantity of the legacy that is, Prep Crew.

There are many occasions where an honoree was listed multiple times. Pete Cipollone, ‘89 was on the NT 13 times and Jim

Moroney ‘71 made the NT 10 times.

All of these names, memorialized on this honor board, is nothing short of extraordinary. As a Prep Crew alum, I have rowed

with some of the honorees and having been on the Prep Crew coaching staff, I have coached some of the honorees. I was

fortunate enough to be on this honor board having coached the double to the Junior World Championships in 2003, and on

the night of its unveiling on September 15th, I was extremely humbled. It was a great opportunity, to chat with those who

have had a direct influence and impact on me as an athlete and especially as a coach. It was great to see Chuck Crawford

who had direct coaching influence over me as a student-athlete. I regret not having had the opportunity to again, thank Bill

Lamb, ’79 for giving me entry into this brother¬hood of SJP alum coaches.

The dedication was well-represented and attended by honorees, alums, family and friends. It was a great opportunity to cel-

ebrate another event in a venue that was the vision of Henry Backe, ‘48 so long ago, and it was the first time for some to see

the inside of Gillin Boathouse. It was an awesome site seeing so many great coaches, who are Prep Alumni, at the unveiling,

including Bob Madden, ’64, Jim Glavin, ’65, John Bannan, ’69, and Dan Kilpatrick, ’94.

This event, and others that FSJPR envisions, hope to provide settings and continued opportunities to renew Prep Crew

alumni interactions. It was a great night, and thanks to FSJPR, the Prep and the attendees for making it a suc¬cess. Thanks

to all members of FSJPR for their support in this and future events. Enjoy a few pictures from the event. The list of the

members on the honor board is repeated within this edition as well. You will also find the transcript of Father Bur's speech.

Wishing you, calm water and a slight tailwind.

Fellow Prep Crew Alumni and Friends:

Another fall season for Prep crew has concluded. The boys in Crim-son and Grey gained speed throughout the season earning victories in the Varsity and Junior Varsity eight events at the Head of the Schuylkill. The sculling program and fours also posted impressive results throughout the Fall season. Excellent Fall results with speed to build upon. Now it is time for ergs, weight and running on Kelly Drive. This is the rite of passage for Spring racing that all Prep row-ing alumni have endured. The work done in December through Feb-

ruary wins races in April and May. The first race on March 16 is right around the corner.

The Friends of St. Joseph’s Prep Rowing (FSJPR) is less than a year old but we have made some great strides in establishing a formidable and everlasting alumni association. With a Prep rowing alumni base over 2,000 strong, we have the critical mass to make a difference for Prep rowing. Some of the things we have accomplished in 2012 include; creation and unveiling of the St. Joseph’s Prep honor board, highlighting the accomplishments of our US National Team members. Over 200 people were in attendance including close to 50 honorees. A special thanks for our architect and carpenter Kevin Kelly ’72 and graphic artist Margaret Kieffer. Along with the Prep Crew parents group, FSJPR hosted the alumni / class day races. With some of the most competitive races that we have seen in years, the Class of 2008 won the Vince Dougherty ’48 Class Day Regatta Cup and the mugs to prove it. This year’s Senior class of 2013, were vic-tors of the current student body. Rick Wegryn ’82 led the efforts for FSJPR. The other notable accomplishment is the publication of The Crimson Blade, our Prep rowing alumni newsletter. The first edition had over 1,000 views. A special thanks to Chris McElroy ’84 and Shawn Duff ’04 – co chief editors. Throughout the year we will continue provide communication via social media, emails, newsletters, and social events. We will also undertake preserving the legacy of Prep rowing. For many of us, Prep rowing was some of the best experiences of our lives and provided a foundation for success in college and in life.

Please stay tuned to future FSJPR events and communication. If in Philadelphia, we are having a general meeting of the FSJPR on Saturday, January 5, 2013 – 9am to 4pm at the Prep boat-house. All are welcome to attend and actively participate. We hope to organize some regional events for those that do not live in the metro Philadelphia area. If you would like to become involved in a committee or governance of FSJPR, please contact me at [email protected] or 267-228-1341.

This fall, we welcomed back 58 rowers – our youngest squad in 4 years with only 1 returning heavyweight varsity and 3 lightweight varsity oarsmen. The boys quickly demonstrated a great spirit and a willingness to learn and work hard. The 1st 4 weeks were spent in small boats and introducing the sophomores to sculling in our Octoped. Three new coaches joined our staff: Peter Alter, Bob Madden ’64, and John Pichola ’06 (see related article)

On the Friday before Navy day, we seated 10 boats for the race and, with the ratings capped at 28 spm, we raced well with a 2nd, 2-3rd, and 2-4th place finishes. A week later, at the HOCR the V4+, starting 79th and, after crashing oars with a boat that wouldn’t yield, moved up to finish 30th in a fast field of crews, most of whom came from programs where fours are the primary boat. Our 8 again finished 9th but beat both boats that finished ahead of them at Navy Day. For the HOSR, the Prep finished the head racing season with 2-1st, 1-2nd, 2-3rd, and 1 -4th – the highlights were 1st in the V8, 1st and 2nd in the JV 8, and a 3rd and 4th in the 4x.

During HOSR week, the team hosted Abingdon School during their annual fall trip to the US. Five of the rowers in their heavy 8 returned form the crew that defended their Princess Elizabeth Cup win at the Henley Royal Regatta. This was, once again, an exciting visit and a great opportunity for both programs to share their cultures and spirit. We scrimmaged with them during the week and shared an exciting day of racing on Sunday. Unfortunately, they had to cut their trip short band were able to safely leave Sunday night before Hurricane Sandy hit.

Fall training ended with our Annual Class Day/ Alumni race – this year, for the first time, crews were competing for the 1st annual Vince Dougherty ’46 Cup with individual mugs as the winning prize. It was great to see all the former rowers and their families who returned to race and share stories of their glory days (see related article). This get together is a highlight for the current rowers and they look forward to bragging rights racing former teammates as well as older alumni. Thanks to everyone for making this day memorable and a tremendous success.

I am so grateful for all the parents, alumni and Friends of St. Joe’s Prep Rowing who made this an outstanding fall. The program is so fortunate to have great support. I also want to especially thank all the parents who gave their skills and sweat to build new shelves, racks, cubbies, and a trophy case and donate mats and weights for our training. Finally, I want to express my thanks to Kevin Kelly ’72 for building a showcase Honor Board, Margaret Kieffer for tirelessly doing the board lettering and Joe Kieffer ’84 and his team for a great night of celebration dedicating the SJP US National Team honor board.

WHAT A GREAT FALL – THE DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN!

Chuck Crawford coached Prep Crew from 1978-1987, guiding the program to unprecedented successes at the Stotesbury Cup, SRAA Nationals, Philadelphia City and Philadelphia Catholic League championships. He also took the program to two Hen-ley Royal Regatta trips, the programs first in 1980 and again in 1984. Both times the Prep advanced to the finals of the Princess Elizabeth Cup.

Chuck has stayed active in the sport since leaving the Prep. In 1990, he helped found the University of Delaware’s row-ing program and coached both the men’s and women’s teams. In his first four years coaching at UD he guided the varsity 8+ to medal performances three times at the Dad Vail Regatta. After the 1996 season Chuck left UD to re-turn to SJP as an assistant coach from 1997-2000. Chuck also remained active as a coach with Penn AC, where in 1991 he took crews to the Pan American Games, guiding the USA 4+ and USA 4- to silver medals.

Chuck returned to Delaware in 2001 and won several more Dad Vail Regatta titles. In 2003, he took UD’s Lightweight 8+ to Henley Royal Regatta, and was named Dad Vail coach of the year in 2005. Chuck is in his 18th year at thehelm of the program, and while still the director of theprogram is primarily coaching the lightweight squad this season.

Chuck lives in Greenville, DE and is the president of ACW Cor-poration, which manages 22 Arby restaurants. Chuck also enjoys spending time with his family, and had his first grandchild Char-lotte 2 years ago. His daughter Eileen was married in 2006 and is the administrative chief orthopedic surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania, while his son Brian was recently married in Octo-ber 2012 and is an attorney in Wilmington. His youngest daugh-ter Melanie is working in the restaurant management business in Wilmington as well.

CC: When I took the Prep head coach position in 1978, I walked into the perfect coaching position. My youngest brother Joe justentered as a freshman and when the athletics director Mr. Jim Murray interviewed me for the position, I felt as connected to the Prep as a Bonner alumnus ever could. Henry Backe and Vince Dougherty, fellow Penn AC members, along with Jim Murray and Fr. Smith, SJ, the school president, became my biggest sup-porters and helped me in ways that only a Prepper would under-stand.

It was evident right from the beginning that I was being entrust-ed with special student-athletes that were willing to listen and learn and were not going to back down from whatever training challenges I gave them. The staff of coaches that I was able to assemble was unbelievable. My first call was to the legendary Gus Ignas whose son Paul was a sophomore at the Prep. When he accepted, we had embraced a coach that Rich Gannon said taught him how to become a champion. I also hired a young fellow named Bob Schiavone to coach the lightweights and Ed Sweeney to coach the frosh/novices. This staff had to be the best staff ever assembled for the money, and I told them all that I was donating my salary back to the program and they were expected to do the same, which they all did.

The passion of everyone connected to the program was what fell inplace first. Everyone from the student-athletes, to their parents and to the support teams behind the scenes put their shoulder to the wheel and the program which couldn't enter an eight in

the final races of 1977 saw that by working hard together, we could compete and win. It started with a 2nd place finish in the VL8 and an open water 7th petite final win in the VH8 at the Scholastic Rowing As-sociation Championships in '78, to a win in the '79 4- with Coach Bill Lamb in the crew and his euphoric prophecy of dynasty at the finish, and the

medals in the VL8 and VH8 giving credence to our efforts.

1980 was an incredible year. At the SRA Championships, we won 4 gold medals including the VH8. This was the first for a Philly school in a long time. The whirlwind tour ended with a 2nd place finish at Henley-on-Thames and a crew led by ath-letes Mike Quinn, stroke, Courtney Malcarney, Gene Pelszynski, John Davis, Chris Schmidt, Larry Hennigan, John Irvine, Joe Stibler, and Tom Ellis. This group of men showed to all the Prep crews after that we had what it takes to compete with the best of the best across the globe. It took three years to go from worst to first but the athletes and their desire just needed direction and discipline. The support team channeled to make it cometogether. Again, I can't say how valuable the support of Henry, Vince, Jim, Fr. Smith, and then Fr. Taggart and all of the parents and sup-porters were in the writing of the blueprints of success of Prep Crew.

NT Members, Shane Madden (SM) and Bob Duff (BD), who sat in the Lightweight Quad, bow and 2, respectively, this past summer, made some time to entertain some questions from the Friends of St. Joe’s Prep Rowing (FS-JPR).

FSJPR: What were your rowing experiences prior to mak-ing the national team?

SM: I was first introduced to the sport of rowing in 1995 during the spring of my freshman year. The winter months leading up were spent swimming for the Prep, a season which typically extends well into the month of March. My classmates at the same time had been training heavily on the ergs and acclimating with the water for the better part of 8 weeks, which left me feeling extremely terrified walking out for the squad. The late start complemented with the fact I was weighing an intimidating 113 lbs., I felt it would be virtually impossible for my stature to make a dent. After a few short days of land, erg, water workouts I was named to the freshman squad and have been hooked ever since.

FSJPR: What was your rowing experience at the Prep and in college?

BD: I had an interesting experience at the Prep. Although I enjoyed the camaraderie of the team and was good friends with a lot of the guys, I was definitely not one of the top row-ers throughout my time at the Prep. I actually only raced at Stotes once and never raced at Nationals. It was this desire to do better each year that enabled me to get recruited to college. I rowed lightweight at Columbia University, along with three Prep classmates, Dave Mulhern, ‘06, Ryan Bep-pel, ‘06, and Mike Nucci, ‘06. It was great continuing my rowing experience into college with fellow Prep rowers, but

National Team Profiles: Shane Madden, ’98 and Bob Duff, ’06

I suppose we got so used to winning at the Prep that wins were few and far between in college. However, this made me want to work even harder each year at school and I was fortunate enough to make the Under-23 team during the summer between my junior and senior year at Columbia.

FSJPR: How many years have you been on the team, in what capacity and what have been your results?

SM: Following graduation from the Prep in 1998, I joined Malta Boat Club along Boathouse Row - not the typical route one takes with athletics while in college. While en-rolled at Drexel University, I competed in the club level rac-es during the summer months. As the fall of 2005 quickly approached, I wanted a little bit more - I aspired to make the US squad. Either it was going to happen at this point with a change in attitude and training or it wasn't going to happen at all. A significant leap in erg and water re-sults landed me an invite to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA the late winter months of 2006. Fol-lowing making my first US squad the summer of 2006, I was extended an invite to relocate to Princeton, NJ. Along with competing in the lwt 4x at the 2006 Worlds, I raced in 2008 (lwt 4x), 2009 (lwt 2x), 2011 (lwt 4x), 2012 (lwt 4x).

BD: I have been on the Senior National Team for two years (2010, 2012), the under-23 team in 2009, and the Pan Amer-ican team in 2011. My best results to date are in the light-weight 2x at the Pan Am Games where I finished 4th with ‘08 Olympian Tom Paradiso, and in the lightweight 8 when I finished 5th at the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

FSJPR: How could you summarize the results of the 2012 World Championships?

SM: The opportunity to represent the United States at the World Championships is always a great honor one cherishes .

8

Page 9: Crew Newsletter (Winter 2012-13)

9

for the rest of their life. Entering this year's Worlds, my boat mates and I were faced with possibly one of the most competi-tive fields the lightweight 4x event has seen in years. Matched against a field of 15 countries, many heavily decorated ath-letes were flying directly from the 2012 Olympics to Poznan.

Our semifinal ended in a heart wrenching result. We tied Austria unofficially for 3rd place, but FISA (rowing's inter-national governing body) rules do not allow for a 7 boat fi-nal. The only solution to a tie-breaker is for a re-row of the two boats - one on one, mano y mano - which must be com-pleted within the 2 hour window from the originally sched-uled semifinal start time. In the midst of a situation that happens so infrequently, chief officials were left with the role of deciding the final outcome. Instead of applying the standard protocol, the officials resorted to magnifying the finish line photo by 100 and determined we had finished ten one thousandth of a second (less than the width of a pixel) behind Austria. It was devastating hearing the outcome, but racing internationally is never an easy route by any means.

BD: The result from this past summer when I raced in the lightweight quad with fellow Prep alum Shane Mad-den, ‘98 was not what we were hoping for (we finished 8th out of 15), but it was one of the most competitive years ever for our event. Olympians from London and World Champion rowers entered our event (the lightweight quad is not an Olympic event), which resulted in Italy not med-aling for the first time in over a decade. We missed mak-ing the A final by .001 second after we finished with the same time as Austria, and after hours of review we were relegated to the B final after the officials enlarged the photo finish and saw that our boat was one pixel behind Aus-tria. It was frustrating to race the B final but it was an incredible semi-final race for us as we came back from 6th place at the 1000m mark and 5th with 500 meters to go. For me, it makes me want to work even harder to ensure I never come out on the losing side of another tight finish.

FSJPR: How did your experience at the Prep prepare you for international competition?

SM: During my years at the Prep, I was coached by Bill Lamb. There was a culture instilled within the program where individuals were expected to carry themselves at the highest level, without exception. Striving for more on and off the water - faster scores and ever improving results. The biggest contributors that influenced my press towards in-ternational competition is the never-ending support of my parents and family, who have made everything I have ac-complished all the more possible.

BD: Rowing at the Prep helped me prepare in many ways ..

to make the transition to the National Team. Although at the Senior level there is a lot that goes into training and rac-ing such as the large technical aspect, recovery, nutrition, etc., I would not have gotten anywhere without the mental toughness that I feel the Prep instills in its rowers. After experiencing winter morning erg workouts in a boiler room where you and your teammates push your body to the limit all the while fighting for your seat everyday, I felt like I had the basic tools necessary to continue to push myself even further.

FSJPR: What are your current plans?

SM: Following a short stint of relaxed training during the fall months, I'm winding up again to make another press. I personally strive for perfection, wanting more and never satisfied with previous results. As long as the rest of my life is kept in balance, I will continue with the competitive row-ing. One only has a short period of time before the window of opportunity passes. I don't want to look back years from now with any regrets towards rowing and say should have, could have, would have.

BD: I currently took this past fall season to address some nagging injuries that have been annoying me the past couple years and continued to train but without the heavy volume that I have done previously. I also took an LSAT exam prep class as I plan to attend law school after the 2016 Olympics. I'm now making my way back into full-time training and preparing for the spring racing season. .

FSJPR: What would you like to share for those student-athletes who might have National Team aspirations?

SM: The opportunities and tools one is afforded while at St Joseph's Prep across the board are unmatched. Upon graduation, it comes down to the determination and ap-plication of these tools by the individual to reach the upper levels in life.

BD: The advice I would give to student-athletes who might have National Team aspirations is to work hard and never doubt yourself. Also, it might seem superfluous but set goals for yourself, not just in sport or school but also life. Rowing has transcended beyond just a sport into so many things I now do in my life. Rowing in college wasn't on my radar when I was at the Prep, until I saw that it was a possibility. Rowing on the National Team wasn't on my mind until one of my college coaches saw the work I was putting in and told me it was possible. And if you told my high school self that I was one day going to put a career on hold and train for the Olympics I think he would have said I'm crazy, but with total self-belief and determination anything is possible.

St. Joseph’s Prep Honor Board Unveiling

Page 12: Crew Newsletter (Winter 2012-13)

What is in a list of names? A list of leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel, a list of twelve apostles in the gospels, a list of honored men and women leaders of history, a list of young men enrolled at the Prep! Even the one God has a list of three persons, Father, Son and Spirit! Yes, we often honor men and women one by one but by putting their names side by side we remind ourselves that all of life, even the source of life, is a community of loyalty and love, of courage and commitment. In honoring men and women with names appearing together we honor their dedication not simply to their own dreams but to the vision and dreams of a community of persons seeking to make a mark that values life and all of its possibilities, a community that gives the lie to those who set limits on human life.

So we gather to thank first of all those who conceived and executed this honor board, especially the coaches under the leadership of Jim Glavin and the members of Friends of St. Joseph’s Prep Rowing under the leadership of Joe Kieffer. But most of all we thank those whose names appear on this honor board not simply for their dedication to Prep rowing but also for the honor they bring to our Prep rowing community and to themselves with their energy and commitment to crew and to all of life. Prep crew opened for them a door rarely made available to Prep students in any other sport or activity, a door to the nation and the world.

So we bless this sign of their community and we bless also the men themselves, those gathered here, those who could not be here and those two who have died, Joe Greipp and Tom Ellis. We ask God that these names remind all of our young rowers that their own efforts with one another in Prep rowing will be fruitful. We ask that these names remind all of us that life gets better in an atmosphere of community, of love and of loyalty.

We ask the community of Father, Son and Spirit to bless us all and as a sign of that blessing we sprinkle The St. Joseph’s Prep Rowing Honor Board with life giving water in the name of the Father, Son and Spirit. And we pray together as Jesus taught us: Our Father…

Blessing of the St. Joseph’s Prep Crew Honor Board September 15, 2012by Rev. George W. Burr S.J. ’59 – President St. Joseph’s Preparatory School

Q: What is your major at Cornell?

A: My major at Cornell is Science of Natural and Envi-ronmental System (SNES). This major focuses on human environmental interactions. I am also fulfilling the courses for the Pre-Med program and hoping to minor in Business as well.

Q: What made you choose Cornell?

A: I chose Cornell because it has a unique environmental school. While some of the classes might be similar to other schools, our schools location grants us access to a wide-spread variety of ecosystems such as Lakes, farms, bogs, and forests. Likewise, these account for a larger wildlife population in the area. Another reason I choose Cornell is the competitive rowing program. Cornell is consistently near the top rankings of rowing schools and we are eager to push a bit harder.

Q: What do you think has prepared you for Cornell row-ing and academics from SJP?

Q/A with SJP Former SJP Heavyweight Steve Markham ’12, Cornell University ‘16

A: Coming from the Prep I feel that I am more prepared for college and collegiate sports. The academic workload is similar to SJP as well as the competitive nature of the rowing program. I was already a step ahead in the lifting program and with rowing technique as well. One main differencebetween high school and college is the amount of work you must do on your own, and if you want to get faster, be pre-pared to put in the work.

Q: Who have been major influences on your rowing ca-

reer?

A: One major influence on my rowing career would be my cousin Nick Barnes, a rower and Prep grad from the Class of '07. He encouraged me to try rowing when I first got in to the Prep. My parents have also been very supportive during my rowing, always there to congratulate a win or help get over a loss. Without a doubt, the greatest influence on my rowing was the collective comradely that we had as a senior class. Everyone treated one another like a brother and sup-ported each other through our four years at the Prep. Dur-ing Kairos our brotherhood grew stronger and the collective support was a great influence on my rowing career.

Q: What are a few of your favorite races/experiences at SJP both rowing and otherwise?

A: My favorite race had to be SRAA's in 2011. After a tough race at Stotesbury, we were able to rally back to beat St. Albans a week later. It was fantastic to share this experience with my closest friends because the lightweights won that day as well. Again, Kairos was a great experience to share with teammates.

20

Page 21: Crew Newsletter (Winter 2012-13)

Q: What is your major at Delaware?

A: My major at Delaware is Exercise Science.

Q: What made you choose Delaware?

A: II chose Delaware because I like how the campus is spread out around a larger area. As for rowing, I like how UD has a competitive lightweight program separate from the heavyweight program, something the majority of Dad Vail teams do not have.

Q: What do you think has prepared you for Delaware rowing and academics from SJP?

A: I think the biggest advantage is learning the impor-tance of time management from the rigorous curriculum at the Prep as well as the intense commitment to crew.

At SJP, we worked hard to retain our titles and keep the program at the top nationally. The workouts pushed us past what we originally thought was our maximum output and made us mentally tough for the demanding races we were in.

I learned the proper technique for Olympic lifting that I now supplement with a lot of my training for college rowing. I hope to apply all of the technical skills I have acquired from the program to my college rowing ca-reer to help earn a spot in the top eight at the next level.

Q: Who have been major influences on your rowing ca-reer?

Q/A with SJP Lightweight Colin Dabagian ’12, University of Delaware ’16

A: Coach Bob Kaehler, as a former Olympic rower was someone who I looked up to from the beginning. He is a very approachable and straightforward coach, but he gave us very intense workouts. With the help of his workouts and hands on coaching I was able to break through and attain personal bests on erg tests.

Q: What are a few of your favorite races/experiences at SJP both rowing and otherwise?

A: One of my favorite races was when our Lightweight 8+ raced Kent's formidable 2nd 8+ and won by open water on their home course. I remember looking at their boat at the start and seeing how big their guys were compared to us, with their smallest rower in the 180lb range. The race was even around each turn until the sprint when we took a full length in the closing 450 meters.

Another favorite racing memory is when we won the Light-weight 8+ Stotesbury Cup in 2011, my junior year. I really wanted to get my first gold at the regatta after placing 3rd the year before in the Lightweight 4+, and crossing that line first was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.
