INTRODUCTION• The island of Crete was the center

of Minoan civilization in Bronze-Age Greece that flourished from approximately 2200 to 1450 BC.

• British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans found and studied remains on Crete

• Called “Minoan” civilization after king named Minos.

• The Minoans were famous for the magnificent palaces they built, above all at Knossos.

Construction on the palace at Knossos, according to the legend the palace of King Minos, was begun perhaps as early as 2000 B.C and by 1900 B.C, it was fairly close to its final form- a large single building with a central courtyard

Theories For Decline of Minoans

• 1750 B.C – Earthquake destroys Minoan palaces.

• 1628 B.C – Volcano erupts at Thera.

• 1400 B.C – War between Minoans and Myceaneans led to decline of power.

WOMEN COSTUMEAncient Cretan- •  Women were wearing a long

bell-shaped skirt, often in a series of flounces.

• They wore a bolero-like jacket that had elbow-length sleeves but was open in front, leaving the breasts bare.

beautifully embroidered apron.

The Cretans liked bright colours, and their dress was vividly embroidered and decorated. The hair of both sexes was worn long, looped and braided and dressed with jewels, pearls, and ribbons. The Cretans bathed frequently, oiling their bodies afterward.

• So look at this Minoan figure and now notice that what she is wearing is a sewn garment.

• The skirt she is wearing may have had framework underneath it to support the bell shape of it.

• They wore a variety of complex garments that were sewn together.

• The Minoans sewed skirts and blouses that were shaped to the body of the wearer.

Crete is located in the southern Mediterranean and has a hot climate, so heavy clothes were not needed.

As a conclusion, we can learn how they dress during that era. They had a very complex culture more advance than the societies that follow it. And it is inspires us to gain ideas to design clothes/art. Futhermore, the women in Crete are highly respected
