Plans for a new wetland interpretive centre to replace the current facility in Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area marsh are moving forward, said Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks.

For more than a year, a committee chaired by Binks has been working to shape a new future for one of the Creston Valley’s most valuable resources.

Not all medical care needs to take place in person. An online medical service can help relieve pressure on the health care system, said Creston Mayor Ron Toyota.

Medeo allows patients to consult with a doctor by video link and it is available to all B.C. residents (and in other jurisdictions around the world). The service is covered by the BC Medical Service Plan, which is billed directly for Medeo services.

As chair of the Creston Valley Health Working Group, which works to recruit physicians and other medial professionals to the Creston area, Toyota said he regis-tered with Medeo to test how the service works.

“I registered and then made an Internet appointment,” he said. “A receptionist contacted me and I did a Facetime consult with the physi-cian, getting a second opinion on my high blood pressure.

“This system is great for getting prescriptions refilled, and if lab or blood tests are required, it is then referred to Medeo. A physician is contacted and an appointment is then scheduled.”

Medeo, a privately owned com-pany, is not a medical product — it is

a utility that connects doctors and patients. The company does not employ doctors, but any practicing B.C. physician can sign on to see B.C. patients via videoconference. If a Medeo patient’s doctor has signed on to the service, the patient can be matched with him or her. A patient can also send an invitation for his or her physician to sign on to Medeo.

Creating an account is simple. First time users enter their name, Medical Services Plan number and phone number, then create a pass-word. They then enter a virtual waiting room where a Medeo co-ordinator does an initial screening. A video consultation with a doctor is then arranged, usually within a day of making the request. Access to the videoconference service requires a computer with a camera.

Brian LawrenceIT”S OFFICIAL! — Barb Archibald (centre) — whose late husband Rand, as president of the Creston and District Credit Union (CDCU), was the driving force behind a major donation — cut the ribbon on the Prince Charles Theatre’s new seats during the Take Your Seat concert hosted by the Creston Community Auditorium Society on Saturday. She was joined by (from left) seat campaign chair Annette Smithson, Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director Tanya Wall, CDCU vice-president Carole Materi, RDCK Area A director Garry Jackman, auditorum society president Joanna Wilson and RDCK Area C director Larry Binks at the event, which celebrated the installation of new seats after two years of fundraising — including a $57,000 RDCK grant and a $25,000 CDCU grant that matched $25,000 in community donations. The concert had a total of 58 performers take to the stage, offering music, singing and dancing to the sold-out audience.

Medeo, an online service, offers patient care alternative

Medeo uses encrypted software to ensure the confidentiality of the doctor-patient interactions.

On the Medeo website (medeo.ca) are testi-monies posted by Twitter users:

“Shout out to @medeo for saving my family from spending half my day in a crowded clinic just to get my regular medications refilled!”

“Just downloaded @medeo, signed up and was talking to a doctor, after hours, in minutes. THIS is how health care should be!”

“Thanks @medeo! You saved me from a long wait at the drop in clinic with a 2 yr old! Only 20 min wait to connect to a Doc = Brilliant!”

Another resource for those who can’t get a doctor’s appointment in a timely manner or who need quick information about a medical issue is HealthLink BC. The website provides medically approved information on more than 5,000 health topics, symptoms, medications and tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It also has a director listing services near the search-er’s hometown.

A phone call to HealthLink BC (811) allows callers from British Columbia to speak with a nurse at any time of the day and night. Pharmacists are available to answer questions about medication at night.

“This system is great for getting prescriptions refilled, and if lab or blood tests are required, it is then referred to Medeo.”Ron ToyotaCreston Mayor

This is the last of 2 series of articles sponsored through TAPS as part of a Moving Along Together Program (for people experiencing memory changes and their caregivers) This was funded by a Columbia Basin Trust Social Grant. The 16 articles are available on the Valley Community Services website: www.valley.services under Seniors Services and Moving Along Together. We have spent the prior weeks learning a bit about ‘memory‘ and some techniques to work with. We shared ideas from research and practitioners for you to consider: the importance of having a positive attitude to memories, remembering to relax, discovering the role that stress plays and ways to improve attention. We introduced exercises and strategies about using our areas of strength (senses), activating our imaginations, and the role of a sense of humor. We encouraged you to consider playing with these methods to enhance your memory imprint by strengthening it in an area of your brain where it can be more easily recalled. Recall is the topic today, and the skills we have explored in the weeks before are for you to play with and see where the benefit is for yourself. Recall of a memory can quickly turn into frustration when the name or date you are trying to remember just is not there in the moment. Memory Tip: RelaxGet in a comfortable position, deep breathe, calm your mind as you notice any distress about not remembering.Memory Tip: State Dependent MemoryThis type of memory refers to the fact that recall of a memory is easier if you are in the same emotional state that you were in when you were there. So if you are trying to recall a happy memory: smile, giggle, put yourself in a happy state before you activate recall. If you are in the habit of relaxing as you imprint your

memories, then relax when you want to recall it. Hum a tune, move around...what works?Memory Tip: Back DoorAnother way to recall a memory is “in the back door.” If you can’t remember the name of a restaurant you want to revisit: envision your self walking in the restaurant door, and recall the smell of the food that you ordered, the flavours of what you ate; activate all your senses. Memory Tip: Talk Through the Problem Start with the trace of memory you have, start talking and elaborating about it, keep working listening and talking until you arrive at the memory you want. This can also be quite entertaining as you dig deep into your memories to uncover the one you want. Perhaps writing or drawing as a starting point might work for you.Memory Tip: Alphabetical Associated RecallYou are trying to remember a place name: start at A, say it out loud and think if the place started with that letter, keep going through the alphabet. People strong in verbal memory will find this helpful. If this method works, or you like it and it makes sense to you, try focusing on the first letter of the item you want to remember when you are making your memory at first. If you are visually strong, use the same picture image in the recall stage of your memory..These articles were put together by Wendy Proskow at TAPS and edited by Maureen CameronContent compiled and excerpted from ‘The Memory Workbook’ by Douglas J. Mason, Psy.D and Michael L. Kohn, Psy.D. Published by New Harbinger Publications Inc. Distributed in Canada by Raincoast Books

The formation of Kootenay-Columbia Discovery Centre Society has targeted a property off-site from the wetlands, but adjacent to Highway 3 in full view of the marshes.

Society chair Murray Oswald said sustainability is important as the project moves ahead.

“We were given a clear mandate from the committee to develop a sustainable business model around the creation of a new centre in close proximity to the wildlife area,” he said.

With engineering reports revealing that the existing, aging Wildlife Interpretation Centre

needs replacing, the society has secured appropriate property. A new discovery centre would offer year-round education and pro-gramming to connect people to the landscape, and provide addi-tional amenities such as research facilities, an amphitheatre and much more.

“With the incorporation of our society now completed, we can develop an investor and fundrais-ing package,” Oswald said. “It is exciting to see the project moving forward with the energy and expe-rience of our board.”

Founding members of the soci-ety also include Jim Posynick, John Huscroft, Chad Luke, Carolyn Mead, Dr. Colin Yerbury, Jen Comer and Art Tremblay. Jim Abbott, retired Kootenay-Columbia MP, serves in an advisory role.

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats ended a losing streak with two wins on the weekend, bumping them back in to second place in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division.

The Thunder Cats defeated the visit-ing Golden Rockets 5-2 on Friday night, and beat them in Golden on Saturday,

keeping the Rockets at the bottom of the division with two points.

Logan Wullum and Carson Cartwright scored for Creston in the first period for a 2-1 lead, with James Severs’ second-period goal giving them a 3-2 lead. The Rockets were scoreless in the third period, but Thunder Cats Jack Berger and Liam Plunkett added two more.

Plunkett started the scoring just over

four minutes into the first period the next night, with the Rockets tying the score with a shorthanded goal 30 sec-ond later. No goals were scored in the second period, but Severs (power play) and Cartwright (empty net) each scored in the third.

This weekend, the Thunder Cats host the Nelson Leafs Friday, the Kimberley Dynamiters Saturday and the Kamloops Storm Sunday.

It’s easy to sympathize with the plight of the letter to the editor writer a few weeks ago who spent long hours in emergency at Creston Valley Hospital just to get a prescription renewal. It wasn’t just the wait that upset her — no one seemed willing to keep her informed about how long the wait would be, or why she wasn’t seen more quickly.

When Mayor Ron Toyota and I discussed the letter I said the frus-tration undoubtedly started because she had to attend the emergency room for a non-emer-gency issue. It meant that she would not be seen according to the order of patients who arrived because emergency patients get first priority, as they should in emergency. And it isn’t always easy for an observer to know exactly who is in need of emergency care. Not every emergency involves blood or obvious symptoms.

And I said as well that I could understand why a nurse or staff member might not have made it a priority to check back with the let-ter writer. No one, I said, likes to go up to someone and tell them that they have no helpful informa-tion for them. Facing a patient without having helpful informa-tion isn’t likely to be satisfying and is unlikely to get a positive response.

I have been in similar situations. A dozen years ago I put my hand into a table saw blade. After emer-gency surgery, which entailed a flight to Calgary, I made seven more trips to the Foothills Medical Centre as the wonderful Dr. Don MacPhalen performed more sur-geries in an effort to restore as much use to my hand as possible.

Most of those procedures were done in the minor surgery unit, where I had the original surgery done. It is a part of the hospital’s emergency service and, as such, I could not be scheduled for a spe-

cific time. Instead, I was instructed to arrive in the morning. I would check in with admissions and then take a seat in the unit’s waiting area. My own surgery would take place when Dr. MacPhalen had a window of opportunity when no emergencies were demanding his time.

The experience of waiting for the surgeon was never the same twice. Sometimes a nurse would regularly emerge through the minor surgery door to inform me that the doctor was with an emer-gency patient and my wait would be extended. On one long day I waited six or more hours with no information at all. I simply had to trust that they had not forgotten that I was there. In all cases I was eventually escorted to a room, where the amazing surgeon (he was actually a pediatric surgeon who specialized in working on kids’ hands) would conduct anoth-er procedure. I have never forgot-ten the day he told me that I was considered to be “a gold standard patient”. The reason? I always did what I was instructed to do pre-

and post-surgery and I never, not once, put my own needs above others. When nurses did come to update me on the waiting situa-tion, often with an apology, I sim-ply replied that they needn’t worry. I was not an emergency and did not expect to have priority over those who were. I had, after all, once been an emergency patient and I remember the relief I felt when I was wheeled into the emergency registration area and a young and fit looking man carry-ing a cup of takeout coffee walked in from outside. He looked around, then walked over and asked if I was from Creston. Yes, I said. “I’m Dr. MacPhalen and I’ll be looking after you. We’ll get you in as quickly as possible.”

Prior to that hand injury, I had never spent a night in a hospital and I had attended our hospital as an emergency patient twice. Once I had a tiny piece of metal in my eye and another time I was suffering from a kidney stone (which passed a short time after I arrived). Never having been without a family doc-tor, I have never had to attend the emergency in Creston for a minor issue simply because it was my only option.

I hope the letter written by Mayor Toyota has helped to explain why it’s OK to attend the hospital emergency room for some-thing like a prescription renewal. And I hope the hospital reminds its staff that customer service is important, even when it is impos-sible to tell a patient how long a wait is in store. Our system works remarkably well, especially when we need it most.

The whole point of Zen practice is to teach us that we are not separate from anything. Thirteenth-century Zen master Eihei Dogen expressed this in his “Mountains and Rivers Sutra”. He said, “If you doubt moun-tains walking, you don’t know your own walking. It’s not that you are not walking; it’s just that you don’t know or understand your own walking. If you want to know your own walking, you should fully know the green mountains walking.” Until you appre-ciate and fully embrace the mystery of mountains walking, you haven’t really seen your own life, and you don’t appreciate the enormous measure of who and what you are.

Often as we get older, we do appre-ciate this amazing opportunity of human life. I’ve heard many seniors lament the stupid things they did, the time they wasted. But of course, at the time, they had no idea what they were doing, and in some way, what hap-pened in their lives is exactly what had to happen. Dogen is saying that we don’t know our own life until we know constancy, impermanence and letting go of self-centeredness. The big pattern, which includes constant walk-ing and complete rest, characterizes all existence, and until we have con-templated our own constant walking

and complete rest through spiritual practice, we won’t fully appreciate our own life.

Dogen goes on to say, “Green moun-tains are neither sentient nor insentient; and you are neither sentient nor insen-

tient.” This statement is kind of surpris-ing because we think that we are sen-tient and mountains are not. Dogen’s words may express the essential differ-ence between western and Islamic reli-gions and Far East Asian Buddhism. In western thought, there is a hierarchy of beings. The highest beings are invisible and of the visible beings, humans are highest. Creatures that we think have less capacity are lower beings, and objects without life are lower still. You can’t kill people; but you can kill ani-mals. And it doesn’t matter if you trash stuff that isn’t alive, because it is a lower order of being.

Throughout history, we have imposed this hierarchy on humans, as well. During colonization, Africans and North American Indians could be bought and sold or killed. The Nazis considered Jews to be a disposable race, and today, in the radicalized Middle East, infidels are so low on the hierarchy that it’s a spiritual act to kill them. The examples are endless. At the same time, there are human beings who are so precious that if you insult them you must be killed, or if you deny them as the highest beings, you burn in a lake of fire for eternity.

For Dogen, all beings are equally important. He often says that even roof tiles, walls and pebbles are sentient beings and they all express the teaching of compassion.

Suggested practice: Try treating every person, animal and object in your world as though they are equally pre-cious and see how this affects the way you feel about your life.

To the Editor:I volunteer at Gleaners. In the last

five years, I have probably come in contact with the majority of this com-munity. You’re a great bunch of people.

In the time I have worked there, I can’t tell you how many people have stopped and said thank you for what we do for the community. We really appreciate it. However, it’s time to set the record straight.

Gleaners doesn’t support your community, you do. Creston is unique in that it has the vehicle to help you do this. Every time you donate something to Gleaners, you are supporting your community. Every time you buy something at Gleaners, even if it’s only worth a quarter, you are supporting your community. Without you, Gleaners wouldn’t be. Without you, all of our wonderful volunteers wouldn’t be able to do the volunteer work they love.

So if you know someone who donates to Gleaners, stop and say thank you for supporting our commu-nity. If you know someone who shops at Gleaners, stop and say thank you for supporting our community.

If you’ve never been there, come on down and join the hunt because that’s what it is. The hunt for that unique item. The hunt for that one thing you just can’t live without. The hunt for a great bargain. Above all, have fun because that’s what it’s all about. In doing so, you can take pride in knowing that you are supporting your community.

If you stop by Gleaners Too, you will find this guy and the other guy

always looking forward to helping you out.

So, I say to you. thank you for all the support you give your community. It’s greatly appreciated.

Bob TyndallCreston

To the Editor:Over 100 years ago, humanity wit-

nessed the outbreak of the First World War that claimed 17 million killed, fol-lowed by the Second World War that claimed 50 million victims. We are now practically into a third world war, a war against nature, and all will be los-ers if we destroy what the Creator has so generously provided for us.

One would think that humanity would have learned from these cata-strophic events and that the 21st centu-ry would be a century of peace. But regretfully that is not so.

The Iraq war that was started in 2003 by George W. Bush was a disaster that cost many lives and did not create peace in this region. We have conflicts in many parts of the world and politi-cians are still trying to solve them with force. Canada is at war and people are getting killed with Canadian bombs. We Canadians allow our industries to produce all kinds of weapons and other war materials, the tools of war and help to fuel armed conflicts all over the world.

No, we are by no means a peace-loving nation. Destruction and suffer-ing are the result and millions of peo-ple lose their homes and their coun-try, and hope to find another part in the world to live in.

For those of us who experienced war as teenagers and had bombs dropped on us, were shot at and saw

blood and death around us, it is impos-sible to think of any war being a Great War. Fathers, relatives and even some of our older schoolmates are buried somewhere in the world.

So remembering war for me is remem-bering death, blood, tears and suffering.

To the Editor:(Re: “Clinic not a solution to ER

waits”, Nov. 5)After reading the letter from Mayor

Ron Toyota I am compelled to write myself. My wife and I have been in Creston going on three years and find it impossible to even get on a waiting list for a family doctor. I am not alone.

I believe there are more than 2,000 people in Creston and area without a family doctor. I know of folks who have had to get doctors in Trail and Nelson because no one is available here. I have spent two and three hours to get a prescription filled, and because I have a history of high cholesterol, I asked if I could have it checked. I was told that I looked healthy and they did not believe it was necessary to be test-ed but if I had a family doctor they could do it. Thanks, Doc.

I do not know if Mr. Toyota has had to wait three hours for a prescription but I do not think the masses that have no doctors want to wait three hours in the emergency area during flu season just for a refill.

I believe a walk-in clinic or some-thing similar should be considered as it could ease the pressure on the hospital where the doctors could have the time to be doctors.

Marion Bell

In her very long and full life, Marion experienced both world wars, prohibition, the Great Depression, early automobiles and aircraft and the newness of visitors from distant parts of the world. Marion was born in Pincher Creek in 1911, the youngest of fi ve daughters. Marion spoke of her memories of prairie fi res, of the native families who still travelled through their traditional territory on horseback, of the relentless wind. Her family moved to Creston in 1921, to the property at the north end of 16th Ave. where she lived for the next seven decades.Marion’s father passed away in the 1930’s leaving behind a family of capable, resourceful women who maintained enviable standards throughout the depression and the war years. Marion worked as a telephone operator in Creston while her three surviving elder sisters found work in Calgary. Edith, the eldest sister died of scarlet fever, leaving three young children who were raised by Marion and her mother with the support of Marion’s sisters in Calgary. At the end of the war Marion gave up her job as a telephone operator. She married Syd Bell and they lived in Marion’s family home. Syd owned and managed several orchards with his brother Osborne and later bought an acreage on Indian Road and raised cattle. Marion was a capable partner. She had a very keen mind and supported the family business in every way. In 1946 Shirley was born to Marion and Syd, loving parents who believed in the

merits of patience, tolerance and respect for all men. Marion was a devoted mother, invariably courteous and kind, always true to her beliefs.Marion, Syd and Shirley enjoyed summer visits from their extended family, particularly from those who had found shelter and love at the old home when they needed assistance. No one was ever turned away.Marion was fortunate to keep her sharp mind to her last days. She found great pleasure in the company of her friends. Marion loved bridge and played well past her 100th birthday. To Marion, no one was more important than Derek and Ross, her grandsons. She celebrated their every success and supported all of their ventures. In 1988, Marion lost Syd and found the old house too diffi cult to manage on her own. She moved into Hillside Apartments for the best part of the next two decades. Her apartment had a wonderful patio garden which she tended with great enjoyment. In her late 90s Marion moved to Crest View Village, fi rst in independent living and then to extended care, for the last years of her life. Marion enjoyed her years in Crest View. She was grateful for the kindness and attentiveness of the staff, and for the company and support of her friends in Creston.

Even young and tall Charlie Wilson’s weight couldn’t bring the Kootenay River railroad lift bridge back down. The expansion of the Canadian Pacific Railway line beyond Kootenay Landing, west

of Sirdar, along the west side of Kootenay Lake to Nelson, necessi-tated building an expansive bridge over the Kootenay River where it enters Kootenay Lake.

A bridge wasn’t that big a challenge for the railroad. This early 1930s bridge was likely a

lesser project compared to, say the Stony Creek Bridge. However, the bridge construction was accom-plished with several sections, one of which was a lift span. This por-tion was a river navigation

requirement. Boats, like sternwheelers, had priori-ty on the river, so in order to maintain that, a section of this bridge had to lift up to allow passage under the bridge.

The job was done, but, oops, up popped an unexpected hitch. After the bridge was raised it didn’t want to come

down. And that was even with the help of two very heavy cement counterweights connect-ed to the lift portion by large steel cables channeled over enor-mous pulleys near the top of the towers. The bridge must have gotten a bit uneven in its ascent.

What goes up...

Ed McMackin

Out There How they got it down, I’m not

sure, but trains, perhaps eight per day, were permitted safe pas-sage over the bridge. As far as I know, it was raised only the one time, allowing passage of the first and only boat to make use of the lift section. With the comple-tion of the railway to Nelson, the transportation of train cars, goods and people by sternwheel-ers on Kootenay Lake began its demise. Boats, for a few years, did travel up and down the lake,

making stops at isolated commu-nities, mining camps and homes.

As I was thinking about the bridge span that wouldn’t imme-diately come down, I imagined some hapless handcar or speedy car operator unwittingly sailing into the river from the open span. It would be quite a little plunk. As far as I know, that never hap-pened, as it was widespread knowledge — and without email — that the bridge was stuck in the up position and that it was

not a profitable venture to try and jump the gap. (In other aspects of real life, some people try to do that!)

One speedy car did have an unfortunate ending, but of a dif-ferent sort and place. Now, I am not sure how long it takes to put a speedy car together — a while I expect. But one can be “disas-sembled” in a second or less and here’s how it happened.

All of our members at Cresteramics are back into the routine of their off-site jobs,

running the store and a crazy variety of programs at our building on Railway Boulevard. This building is full of laughter, hugs and, very often, karaoke. The youth summer program was well attended with the teens producing tie-dyed prod-ucts while learning life and job skills and having fun.

Our partnership with the Creston Valley Bird Festival committee is continuing with our members working with local artist Eileen Gidman. Eileen is a very accomplished watercolour and tex-tile artist who is shar-ing her time and tal-ents with our mem-bers as she guides

them to produce the poster that will promote the 2016 bird festi-val. This was made possible by a grant from Columbia Power that provided funds for materials and teaching. The bird festival volun-teers worked to develop this community partnership, seeking funds for it to be possible and are now involved as volunteers in the art project. It is through peo-ple and relationships like this that persons with disabilities are able to be truly valued members of their community.

A pileated woodpecker is the first watercolour painting being tackled by our artists. The results to date are amazing. Watch for advertising for the Creston Valley Bird Festival 2016 and see how accomplished everyone can be with help and

support. Thank you, Eileen, for your patient guidance.

More community support has come to Cresteramics from the Creston Valley Aquatic Society. They have given us funds to team up with Brooke Cherfils, aquatic programmer at the community complex, to help launch an adapted aquafit initiative that will meet the needs of our mem-bers. The aquatic society has also generously funded a leisure access pass for a young lady who will really benefit from it. Thank you, Creston Valley Aquatic Society members, for recognizing how much we will ben-efit from your assistance.

Cresteramics has received recog-nition in the Kootenay Business maga-zine’s September/October Best of Business edition. Our little store, Cresteramics on Canyon Street, won the gold award in the art gallery sec-

tion. This is a big achievement for a little store, congratulations to Valerie and her helpers there. If you haven’t been to our store, please stop by. Many artists display and sell amaz-ing products there, along with Ron Hurry, an accomplished goldsmith and jeweller. Our members help out at the store and our experienced staff offers excellent assistance. This exam-ple of community involvement is one of many that Creston is noted for through the Kootenays.

While all of these activities and projects are going on, our agency con-tinues to offer a safe, supportive and fun program for our members. Thank you to the staff and administrator who work very hard to make this happen. Our community becomes strong when we are all included.

Terry Nowak is a Cresteramics Society board member.

A few years back, a speedy car and, of course, its operator were heading along the track between Wynndel and Alice Siding. When it rounded one of the many bends in the line, it came face-to-face with an approaching locomotive. The operator, not wanting anything to do with this, leaped for the ditch, sustaining a few scratches, scrapes, shockwaves, bruises and bumps but survived the ordeal, not mentioning what may have happened in the track foreman’s office. But it’s a differ-ent story with the speedy car.

Unfortunately, although they do on occasion jump the track, it didn’t happen in this case. Needless to say, when the speeder (not the operator) con-nected with the front end of the

locomotive, it was instantly, totally disassembled, almost smashed to smithereens (flinders) and, of course, pro-nounced “dead” on its arrival at numerous locations.

Railroad history is full of stories of runaway engines, cabooses and boxcars. The Creston railway yard in a reduced form still exists east of the Railway Boulevard cross-ing. The yard often had box cars stored on its sidings, ready to be picked up by the next train. Boxcars may have been empty, full of firewood or coal for section quarters, along the track somewhere, or heaped up with sugar beets, wheat, corn or other local produce.

Now the track from the for-mer site of the Erickson station was very slightly downhill all the way through the Creston yard and on to Wynndel, once called Duck Creek. On this one occasion, a boxcar, which appar-

ently didn’t have the brake set or the wheels chocked, started to roll. I think it got almost to Wynndel where it derailed with-out any human casualties.

All that was then, but now? There are still some stories flit-ting around, while some are buried under the tracks. Some of these stories and others can be relived, with a little help from one’s imagination, at the annual fall train show at the Creston Museum. Everyone is welcome at this event, which will happen 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 22. Cross the tracks at Devon Street and take a tour of “real” trains passing safely, hopefully, over the Kootenay River lift bridge and past sce-nic mountain landscapes. You might even get to be an engi-neer! All aboard!

PEOPLE WHO READ

NEWSPAPERS AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE

MONEY HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON.

Newspaper ads, both print and online, play a key role in helping people make their banking and investment decisions.

Newspapers and their sites outperform all other media in engaging Canadians, including high-income Canadians, boomers, moms and even young adults.

All of which makes advertising in newspapers a very smart move.

The Pet Adoption and Welfare Society runs a place where lost or abandoned ani-mals are kept until they find a loving home. Claudia’s Place is located on Lower Wynndel Road just outside of Creston.

Animals are just like us. How would you feel if no one wanted you? That is exactly how animals feel.

Adopting an animal does require responsibility. If you want to adopt an animal, you will have to fill out an applica-tion form and provide two refer-ences. Adopting an animal also means paying for the animal. The current fee for dogs is $150 and $75 for cats. Keep in mind your animal has had a vet check, proper vaccinations and has been fixed. You save the average cost for these procedures of $300. PAWS would like its pet owners to genuinely care for the animals and have a safe place to live.

Cats are intelligent, curious, fun loving and independent. There are responsibilities, such as cleaning up their litter boxes and feeding them daily. Caring for them when they are sick might involve vet check-ups, worm pills and even shots. Let’s not forget loving attention!

Dogs are another story. They are cute, fun to be around and are very playful. They are a family’s best friend. Walking your dog and poop scooping are two necessary activities. They enjoy Frisbee and many other toys. To them, being a pet brings them happiness and they will make you happy too. Though they require responsi-bility, it is fun and rewarding for you and your pet.

Rather than abandoning your pet, please ask us what we can do to support you and help you keep your pet — they are family too.

Many people are not aware that PAWS have its own memo-rial garden for pets. It can orga-nize a funeral service, or if you would like your pet buried else-where you can get an engraved plaque with your pet’s name on it. There is no set fee, but a dona-tion will be welcome.

Volunteers make Pet Adoption and Welfare Society a success

Pet Adoption and Welfare Society volunteer Frances Collison.Submited

Every year, PAWS has fundraising events: raffle tickets, bake sales at Overwaitea Foods and Extra Foods, and the Santa Claus Parade are all special events. You can also have your picture taken with Santa and your pet at Morris Flowers in December.

The scenery surrounding PAWS looks beautiful with green grass surrounding the area with some fencing, and a space for people to park.

It could use more helping hands. If you want to become a PAWS volunteer, you will have to fill out a membership/volunteer application form, take some training, and pay a small fee.

It is part of our town and the more we donate the more successful PAWS will become and be able to honour more lost and abandoned animals and prepare them for their loving homes. Let’s see what we can do to make a difference in our valley!

TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra is a collection of musicians, linked by common sonic journeys and familial ties. It doesn’t matter much how its members got here, but rather that they are travelling with each other.

The group’s long awaited new album, Love, came out Aug. 21, followed by over 25 dates on its western Canadian tour, which includes a Nov. 16 stop in at Creston’s Sasquatch.

Love is an album about that much-storied sentiment that is certainly no stranger to a song. What makes the Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra’s nine new love songs unique is that it collects differing experiences into one harmo-nized narrative, teasing apart the layers and revealing how hard good people work to be good to each other. It’s an album that speaks to the consequences of love in its many forms, seeing it as both sugar and lemons, suggesting that to have one without the other would make the recipe incomplete.

“The creation of Love was a family affair, which is a feeling our group has always embraced,” said Kurt Loewen, who sings, and plays guitar and key-board. “Our dear friends not only pro-vided the space for the making of the record, designed the set for the front cover and had a hand in the naming of the album, but Emily, my wife, pro-duced it and was the graphic designer.”

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra has spent years weaving stories with guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, with melodies and music makers gleaned from the members’ wander-

ings. This music could not exist without warm bodies in search of harmony.

Tickets are available in advance at Buffalo Trails Coffee House, Kingfisher

Used Books and Black Bear Books, and at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7. Teens receive a special rate only at the door.

The whole time, the Rhythm Boys — Peter Cann (guitars, banjo, vocals), Thomas Webb (guitars, bass, banjo, steel guitar, vocals) and Mark Geddes (bass, percus-sion, mandolin, piano) — deliv-er surefooted roots instrumenta-tion to accompany the spectacle. It’s a joyful sight that divides the line between the band and the audience.

It is this pomp and spirit that MacKeeman and the Rhythm Boys set out to capture on their album, Pickin’ N Clickin’, which was honoured with the 2014 East Coast Music Award for roots traditional group recording of the year. In addition to being awarded the Galaxie Supernova Award at the 2012 Ottawa Folk Festival for their outstanding high-

energy performance, The Rhythm Boys have also per-formed at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, the Woodford Folk Festival, the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival, Celtic Connections and to enthusias-tic audiences at sold-out ven-ues, festivals and theatres across Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Malaysia and Australia.

They step out in style on their latest album, Laugh, Dance and Sing, which features 13 orig-inal songs and traditional tunes that excel in demonstrating the group’s infectious high-energy flair, crisp musicianship and rol-licking rhythm and roots sound. The quartet rocks a signature style that infuses their love of traditional bluegrass and old-

time roots music together to deliver an eclectic wardrobe of tunes that’s as unique and enter-taining as they are.

With flashes of flair and fancy footwork, and a blatant disre-gard for predictable stage pres-ence, MacKeeman and the Rhythm Boys are at the top of today’s vibrant old-time musical revival and are a mighty fine example of what an unending revival it is. They are sure to deliver an ultimate concert expe-rience filled with high-energy electrifying entertainment.

For more information and music samples, visit www.gordiemack-eeman.com or Creston Concert Society’s Facebook page. Tickets are $22 for adult and $10 student in advance at Black Bear Books, Creative Fix and Kingfisher Used Books ($25/$12 at the door).

ERICKSON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The Erickson Community Association is 10 years old this month, and will host its annual Harvest Potluck on Nov. 18.

A meeting of Erickson residents was held in November 2005 to see whether Erickson resi-dents were in favor of changing the Erickson Water Users Society to become the Erickson Community Association. The vote was carried and a new association grew out of the old.

The purpose of the volunteer organization is to:•endeavor to improve the lives of Erickson

citizens by addressing issues that will impact their economic, social, and environmental health and well-being;

•through organizational decision making, voluntary input, long-range planning and edu-cation, work to provide resources to develop structure and support that will foster communi-ty economic growth and enhance the ability of individuals to experience educational, financial and spiritual growth; and

•allow the community of Erickson residents to meet together and share experiences, which will create a better understanding of the com-munity, its history and the people of Erickson.

Over the last 10 years, the association has dealt with a number of issues of concern for local residents. Water has continued to be a major focal point; however, it has also addressed issues regarding road upkeep and safety issues, highway lighting, fire services and more. The community association also is a shareholder in the Creston Community Forest Corporation. It provides a voice for Erickson residents and organizes the annual Harvest Potluck.

This year’s Harvest Potluck will be held in the Erickson Elementary School gymnasium at 6 p.m. (with the annual general meeting to follow). The organization hopes Erickson residents will come out to meet more of their friends and neighbours — and bring a favorite casserole, salad or dessert and share a meal.

CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY

The new seating is finally in at the Prince Charles Theatre! Therefore, it’s a bit ironic that the first presentation from the Creston Concert Society in the revamped location, Gordie MacKeeman and His Rhythm Boys, is one that will make audience members want to get up and jig, dance and boogie at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17.

Hailing from Prince Edward Island, the Rhythm Boys’ exhilarat-ing live show instantly enamours audiences with their engaging, sometimes jaw-dropping, stagecraft

and showmanship. With flavours of bluegrass and roots music bolstered by their stunning musicianship, the group weaves together a refreshing mix of invigourating songs, tradi-tional-leaning ideas and modern influences infused with solid instru-mentation, rockabilly-inspired numbers, and toe tapping reels — all polished by MacKeeman’s stun-ning fiddle work.

With a slight bend of his knee, MacKeeman (fiddle, cello, acoustic guitar, feet percussion, vocals) launches into a song. Guided by the sharp cuts of his fiddle, his famous crazy legs shake and twist with a

Grooming Boarding

Kelly came in the shelter as a kitten and is still waiting to be adopted. She is spayed and shots are up to date. She is eligible for indoor/outdoor cat status due to her earlier exposure of street life. Most cats that are shy at fi rst can bond just as deeply, they just need more time and a safe place to come around. Are you that patient person that can give love fi rst and received its rich reward later?

Peter Lawson Hepher was born at Boswell, BC on December 25, 1920. He received his early education there and did three years of high school by correspondence. He attended Vancouver College for the fi nal two years, obtaining his senior matriculation in 1940.In August, 1940, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, having memorized the eye chart to compensate for having lost the sight in one eye during his teens. He served in Canada and Britain until October, 1945, when he was discharged with the rank of sergeant. While in Britain he married Mary Anderson, daughter of a childhood friend of his mother’s. In 1946 he enrolled at the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1949. In 1950 he graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism Degree.

Peter worked for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix as an editorial writer and editorial page editor from 1950 to 1956, when he moved to Lethbridge as editor of the Lethbridge Herald’s editorial page. In 1960 he was transferred to Calgary as associate editor and editorial page editor of The Albertan, where he remained for 20 years. When The Albertan was taken over by the Sun newspaper chain, he resigned and moved to the Calgary Herald as Senior Editorial Writer. He retired in 1985 but continued to write a weekly column for the Herald for another year. During this time he volunteered for the University of Calgary Medical Faculty, assisting in the selection of candidates for medical school.Peter and Mary moved to Creston in 1991.Mary was in poor health, which continued to deteriorate until her eventual death. The last few years of her life were quite lonely for Peter as she was in extended care, and unable to recognize or respond to him.In December 2005 Peter married Anne Page, whom he had known through local committee work for some time. In Anne he found a kindred soul, and together they actively served the community up until the weeks before his passing. They enjoyed many adventures together, including trips to Great Britain, Egypt, Greece, and Alaska. Their most recent trip was to New Zealand in 2013, when Peter was 92! Anne’s family accepted and adopted Peter as their own, for which he was always humbly grateful.Peter was an active member of the Save Our Community Coalition, the Anglican and United Churches, the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, the Community Response Network, and the Creston Valley Community Housing Society. He believed strongly in these organizations, and was a willing and energetic worker on committees, always ready to contribute his ideas, ideals and resources with common sense, wisdom, and compassion. His community work was recognized in

2014, when he became Creston’s Citizen of the Year. He was instrumental in having badminton revived under the auspices of the Recreation Centre, served as supervisor for a number of years, and continued to play until in his eighties. His other major interests included community service, history, and political science.“The Lake” fi gured prominently in Peter’s life, in three distinct stages. He was born in Boswell, and lived there until early adulthood. After decades on the prairies, he and Mary bought a cabin in Gray Creek which became a well-used and much loved retreat for his family. And in marrying Anne, he became part of the Page cabin family, enjoying many weeks and weekends with Anne and her family over the last decade.Peter was predeceased by his parents, William Lawson and Kathleen Hepher of Boswell, and a son, Paul.He is survived by his wife, Anne Hepher of Creston; son Ian (JoAnn) of Lethbridge, Alberta; grandson Robin (Corinne) and great-grandson Skye of Lethbridge; and grandson Michael (Anie), great-grandson Finn and great-grand-daughter Wren of Fernie, BC., as well as the following Page step-children; Gary (Debra) and their children Meredith, Jacquelyn, and Meghan; Garth (Christine) and their children Nicole, Tara, Tessa, Nathan and Andrew; Leslie (Chuck) and their children Simone and Kira; and Ken (Lisa) and their children Kathryn and Quinn.

Love from Norm, Kathleen, Jason and Dad

CongratulationsErnie & Heather

on your

With love, Rick & Sophia, Steve, Christine , Brandon and Ashley

I would like to thank all the peoplewho helped me through my accident on October 3.

Dale and the First Responders, Dr. LeRoux and the nurses at the hospital. You all had a helping hand in saving my life. I wish I could name you

all personally- you deserve it. In the years of government chiseling and cutbacks, it’s reassuring

to know there’s still this quality of care and professionalism left in our community.

There just aren’t enough words to praise you all. Once again, I owe you a debt of gratitude

and my life. Thanks also to Cranbrook Hospital, Kelowna

Hospital, my family and good friends.Sincere thanks to you all

In Memoriam

One year ago God called you home.A million times we’ve needed youA million times we’ve cried,If love alone could have saved youYou never would have died.In life we loved you dearly,In death we love you still,In our hearts you hold a place,No one else can ever fi ll. You left us peaceful memories,Your loving smile, your gentle face.

Your love is still our guide; And though we cannot see you,You are always at our side.It broke our hearts to lose you,But you didn’t go alonePart of us went with you,Th e day God took you home. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same;but as God calls us one by one,the chain will link again.

Myths & realities:

“Mom, they don’t murder girls”

▾ MYTH: Girls and women aren’t allowed to join gangs: Reality: Girls are joining gangs across Canada and there are many documented reports of

them being extremely violent. Girls are often used to hold and/or transport drugs

and/or guns because the girls and the gangsters don’t think

that the police will stop the girl…they are wrong.

Brianna Kinnear’s mother, along with her daughter’s dog Ferdinand, sit on a memorial bench dedicated to her daughter’s brutal gang murder in 2009. Brianna’s murder remains unsolved.

BY PAM MALEKOWCastlegar News

Riders from Yahk, Creston, Grand Forks and Castlegar were treated to spectacular fall weather and a fun-filled day of classes, when the Horse Association of Central Kootenay held its last show of the year at the Pass Creek grounds on Oct. 4, the Haunted Halloween Ho-Down.

Creston Valley riders Monika Currier and Meagan Leslie returned home with awards for, respectively, in hand class reserve champion and riding walk-trot champion.

The day began with the cos-tume class where both the rider and horse dressed up in cos-tume. Both a Wal-Mart shopper and a First Nations princess strutted their stuff in the ring.

The show's judge, Jackie

Smolinski, put everyone though their paces with a watchful eye riding English or Western, and even some gym-khana games at the end. All riders received a rosette ribbon, along with a Halloween goodie bag with a tack item and candy, for every class they were in.

The horse association would like to thank all the volunteers who made the day a spook-tacular success.
