A combination of factors, my working trip to the coast then myflu vacation, have affected the style (and possibly theaccuracy) of this bulletin. My thanks to Marilin Grahn forproviding minutes to the January 9th Rotary meeting.

One, actually two, of the treats of the January 2nd meeting, the poetic masterpieces those in attendance were pleased toreceive. First up was Marilin Grahn with her stirring ditty. Next up, Lorne Eckersley, who unprepared, wait, what is thisin his pocket? A piece of poetry unknown to the Rotary ear.You will find on subsequent pages copies of each of the twopieces.

At this point I have no idea as to the holder of the “You MakeA Difference” badge. Something tells me I will learn soonenough.

It would appear that the visit by Corky Evans MLA was asuccess and I missed it! Multiple expletives deleted. Movingon.... Last week I hear Dave Butt was our speaker. What didhe talk about?

The District Conference “should be a great event, certainly a great opportunity to attend with it in Trail this year.” Peter Duongo (apologies, I am uncertain of the spelling) will beattending with his Ukelele band from Langley and they will beperforming their amazing routines.

This years International Dinner is scheduled to take placeon March 15, 2008. Committee members are working withthe morning club to ensure this joint project is bothsuccessful and enjoyable.

Lorne poet laureateby Marilin Grahn

A poem of rhyme was requested by Rotarian LorneSo from that request, this wee tale was born ~

The tale is of a newbie to Rotary, who one day did penA “ditty” to tell of a Mystery Dinner of Murder and mayhem

The question arose as to whether or not I could rhymeSo the challenge was set, whilst the clock ticked the time

The Murder Mystery dinner now a thing of the past I felt it was time to answer the challenge, and get to it fast !

So here I sit typing, rather than be out shoveling snowEnjoying the heat and the warmth of the hearths gentle glow

Indeed this ditty’s been penned ~ as the gauntlet was tossedNeither Lorne nor I it seems ~ are e’er for words lost

Lorne requested perhaps a topic that we’d take on to rhymeAlas I think that he’s clearly shown that his words do certainly shine

Thus with this very short ditty Lorne, I now do wholeheartedly concedeThat you, Lorne, shall remain our Poet Laureate, Hear-Hear - yes indeed !

A Makeup for Ten Rotariansby Lorne Eckersley

After missing a meeting their demeanors were grim,Their perfect attendance was looking quite slim.

They could go Tuesday morning if they could only wake up.And by 8 a.m. they’d have completed their make-up.

But one after one they made that plan fail,One of them complaining, “But that club’s all male.”

“That doesn’t bother me,” said one sleep-in lover,“But I’ll get up that early when Hell freezes over.”

From that throwaway line a notion would jellAnd soon they were digging—“We’ll makeup in Hell!”

In no time at all these Rotary club matesWere standing before Satan’s own flaming gates.

“Welcome to Rotary,” was his warm, even hot, greeting,“But you should know I choose who gets into this meeting.”

He surveyed the group and sneered at them all,I know all of your names and now I’ll make the call.

“Don Low,” he said, “No.” Satan’s dark side was warmin’.“You’re Creston’s own Schwarzkopf, your club’s stormin’ Mormon.”

“Your business ethics are strong and that raises my dander,“No one gets in who’s named Darwin Zander.”

“No truckers or berry men, I’ve gotta say,“You’re out, Chuck, Truscott away!”

“But you might look good with a with a three-tined fork, man,”He said, casting a glance toward Bart Bjorkman.

“But I’d never trust a man who bikes, swims and scubes,“I’m certain you’d send my club straight up the tubes!”“Of jokes, Newfie Dave, you’re our club’s great Butt,

“But to our meetings the door is slammed shut.”“I once thought I’d embrace you,” he said to Mark Douglas,

“But now that I’ve seen you, you shall remain hugless.”“No to Marilin Grahn—before we’d all know it,“She’d make everyone in Hell speak like a poet.”

He scoffed and he sneered and he said, “Boy, oh boy-“Not with that name and smile, Melanie Joy.”

“You’ve sent us no business, to us you’re a menace,”He told the dejected Kemle named Dennis. One by one, Satan dismissed each and all,

Until his attention happened to fallOn one lonely member, an outcast in the crowd,

“But you—you can come in,” he pointed, looking proud. He offered his arm. “We’ll do the grand march,” he called,

“We’re always pleased to see Mr. Rand Archibald!”

March 5, 2008 Dennis Kemle Rob Knapton John Edge-Partington

Dennis Kemle was the mystery holder (from my perspective, having missed the January 16, 2008 meeting) of the “YouMake A Difference” badge of honour. This week he passedit on to Marilin Grahn. Both worthy recipients.

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” LawrenceLavender was traumatized with an incorrect guest, $1.00 intothe pot thank you. Gwen Telling correctly identified ourmystery Rotarian as Barb McEntire. More names filling up theboard.

This week was a Business Meeting. First up, Dennis gave usan update on the Splash Park. The CIBC bank has donated$5000.00 towards the addition of a much needed change room. Their reward is a recognition of contribution through a sign. Others commented on the possibility of an ongoing revenuesource if an ATM were to be installed in the change room. Mythoughts, we would need two ATMs, one in the womenschange area and one for the men.

A cheque from Tourism BC (?) Was presented by Tom Mann,Regional Director for Area C in the RDCK. Lots of hard workpaying off for our area.

Gwen Telling, our dynamo Chair of International Projects, reminds us of the International Dinner scheduled to take placeon March 15, 2008. Committee members are working withthe morning club to ensure this joint project is bothsuccessful and enjoyable.

Marilin Grahn and the Social Committee are looking forward toFebruary 8th when the coffee/liquers with entertainment at theSnoring Sasquatch. Sign up to support this worthy event.

Klaus chairing the Radio Auction committee is looking forcanvassing captains to smooth out the donations canvassingprocess. The auction is Wednesday, April 16th, 2008.

As any spending or donation over $500.00 requires the clubmembership vote to approve... The Executive has proposed a$1000.00 donation be provided to the Creston Valley Searchand Rescue in order to purchase updated maps andequipment. This was moved by Ken Gadicke and seconded byMark Douglas. The motion passed unanimously with alldissenting members stuffed into a closet until after the meeting. Fortunately the closet full so said members decided to supportthe motion. Something about being able to find them....

This week Ken Gadicke passed the “You Make A Difference”badge to Rand Archibald. Rand we all love you! Even thoughyou may occasionally wonder, what with all the ribbing andstuff.

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” Marilin, Monteand even Gwen all had incorrect guesses, $1.00 into the potthank you. The actual mystery Rotarian this week was DarwinZander as correctly identified by Lee Johnson. Many morenames filling up the board!

Harry Haberstock proudly announced the birth of a brand newbouncing baby Addiction Recovery Drop-In Centre. Trysaying that 10 times really fast! In 2004 they registered underthe BC Societies Act. In 2006 their charitable tax status wasenabled. The purpose of the drop-in centre is to provide aplace where those working towards an addiction free lifestylecan find needed moral support. The program is based on theAlcoholics Anonymous Twelve Step Program. There are nosleep-over facilities, strictly during regular program hours.

Please remember to bring donations for the food bank. Wesort of neglected to mention this for the Snoring Sasquatchevent on Friday. BUT it’s never too late! Bring non-perishablegoods for the local Food Bank.

Mike Corcoran was on hand to receive the our Rotary club$1000.00 donation towards the local Search and Rescuegroup being able to purchase needed regional maps andequipment.

The Rotary District 5080 Conference is coming May 29 throughJune 1, 2008. This year the conference is being held in Trail, BC.Register before January 31 for discount rate of $225.00. Registration February 1, 2008 and after means your cost will be$250.00.

Our program this week was presented by Ray Heberer. Ray isvisiting from Taiwan. In Taiwan Ray is gainfully employed as amusic teacher/coordinator. The private school where Ray workshas a unique (for us) way of handling funding requests. Whateverhe wants under $800.00 he gets with an annual budget of$50,000.00. For capital expenses the policy is more along thelines of “ask and you shall receive.” This is for the musicdepartment! Now everybody put yourself into a self inducedhypnotic state and wipe all traces of what you just heard fromyour memory. Especially you Monte! I guess the Taiwanese feeleducation is more important than recognized or acknowledged byCanadians. There is a price to be paid however, the pressure

from family and society in general upon the students to excel isintense to a degree we cannot comprehend.

Ray also provided some insights into life in the overbearingshadow of China. It is generally believed the “miracle” of theChina economic boom is not sustainable in the long term.Business in Taiwan and China is all about face. Face first, money second.

Our club is still looking for volunteers to coordinate the tentrentals. This issue is going to keep coming up until we find aperson willing to make sure the tents all find suitable shortterm homes. We told you this isn’t going away, somebodyvolunteer please!

There is now $167.00 in the pot. Ken Gadicke held thewinning ticket this week drawing the Ten of Diamonds. Buyyour tickets each week, you could be the winner of thesubstantial pot. Even if you don’t draw the Ace of Spades youstill win by helping to make Creston and the world a betterplace.

This week Rand Archibald passed the “You Make ADifference” badge to...., the entire Executive of our RotaryClub! Chuck Truscott graciously accepted this prestigioushonour on behalf of all board members (of which he is one).

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” there were threeincorrect guesses. I’m in trouble (still, again, whatever), mynotes are somewhat lacking in relevant and significant detail.Good thing I never chose a career as a court stenographer.Obviously Gwen Telling had a part in identifying the mysteryRotarian but I’m not entirely certain it was Klaus. I had an “X”scribbled after his name and without a video headcam to playback exactly what happened full details escape me. At thisrate it appears Gwen will have almost half of the spots filledon the results chart. We have much to do. Many morenames filling up the board!

It was my turn to present this weeks program. As some ofyou can identify I have the makings of a real motor mouth.Lots to say, so little time to say it. Even some relevant stuff!

The title of my presentation was “Values and Leadership.”Why do we want leaders with values? Leaders without valuesaren’t very effective. What is needed, and wasn’t touchedupon, is leaders having compatible values to the people beingled. “Good” values help to achieve desired results exceptwithout effective two way communication between leadersand people what the desired results actually are seem to getlost in the shuffle.

Great leaders over time have all had common traits. Theseinclude providing a clear direction. Identifying their vision, goals and plans through a “mission” statement. Proving theirvalues is demonstrated through the actions of leaders, nottheir words.

Collaboration through team building, delegation anddemonstrating a service leadership attitude. It’s all about thepeople, not ourselves.

Motivate achievement, this is accomplished by providingfeedback (positive as well as constructive criticism). Givingsupport to your team and people, even when things aren’tgoing as hoped for. Recognizing the contributions of teammembers and the people, again, it’s not about the leader butthe people. Finally resolving conflicts, our leaders provide somuch by working with people to resolve conflicts effectively soas everyone benefits.

We all have a responsibility to demand accountability from ourleaders, be they in business, government or the community. We also must give them our support and allow them to makedecisions which are in the long term best interests ofeveryone overall. Expectations of perfection only means weall will be disappointed. Allowing our leaders to learn frommistakes and correct them will benefit everyone.

This week Darwin Zander, on behalf of the clubexecutive, passed the “You Make A Difference” badgeto Harry Haberstock. Harry is a tireless (at least that’sthe impression we get) individual giving of self andhelping both the community and those individualsneeding a helping hand.

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” therewere a lot of stumped people. Eventually Dan Tarrantidentified the mystery Rotarian as Mel Joy. Come onup Mel and choose your prize behind door numberone, two or three. Wait a minute, wrong program.Back tracking....here. Mel has been involved in anumber of varied activities throughout her life. Allbenefitting her family, those around her and thecommunity at large. Make your guesses so as tosupport the community and you too can secure yourplace on the board.

Gwen Telling reports that the prawn sales this yearnetted our club $3,790.00. Gwen thanked everyonefor their efforts in making this event a huge success.

Unfortunately this week the program presenter wasunable to make it. This put Chuck in a bit of anuncomfortable position however he managed to makethings work without getting at all flustered. Chuck hadthe various tables discuss various strategies formembership growth. We will be discussing this moreat our Business Meeting on February 27, 2008.

The Rotary District 5080 Conference is coming May29 through June 1, 2008. This year the conference isbeing held in Trail, BC. Registration cost is $250.00.

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” there were alot of stumped people. Eventually Dan Tarrant identifiedthe mystery Rotarian as Mel Joy. Come on up Mel andchoose your prize behind door number one, two or three.Wait a minute, wrong program. Back tracking....here. Melhas been involved in a number of varied activitiesthroughout her life. All benefitting her family, those aroundher and the community at large. Make your guesses so asto support the community and you too can secure yourplace on the board.

Klaus is looking for more donations towards this yearsradio auction.

Our program this week is a recap of the variousideas/projects suggested by our roundtable discussionslast week. First up, Marilin Grahn withdrew the idea of abookmobile. After discussions with related groups, although an excellent idea, they have not begun to addressthe numerous infrastructure and other considerations thatwould be necessary to support such a unit. On the backburner for now.

Mel and Carolyn, in conjunction with the PAC for Ariesschool is seeking assistance in funding replacement of theold playground equipment removed after being declarednot “CSA approved.” The estimated cost is $85,000.00.Aries school playground is used as a communityplayground as well as by children during school hours.

Don Tarrant suggested a reading garden behind the library. This would include a basic shelter, benches, picnic tableand a rock garden. Estmated cost $25,000.00. It isanticipated with donations of labour the costs can be

reduced. The design is such so as to keep maintenancecosts to a minimum.

Chuck Truscott has been talking with the Creston NewHorizons Seniors Society regarding maintenance andupgrades required at the Rotacrest hall. A roofreplacement estimated $9,000.00 to $17,000.00. Kitchenupgrades to permit larger functions and promote safetyestimated $10,000.00 to $15,000.00.

Nobody reacted to green, so I’m trying yet another colour. Our club is still looking for volunteers to coordinate the tentrentals. This issue is going to keep coming up until we finda person willing to make sure the tents all find suitableshort term homes. We told you this isn’t going away, somebody volunteer please!

There is now $196.00 in the pot. Harry Haberstock heldthe winning ticket this week drawing the Eight of Clubs.Buy your tickets each week, you could be the winner of thesubstantial pot. Even if you don’t draw the Ace of Spadesyou still win by helping to make Creston and the world abetter place.

Could the first greeter on the list each week pleasecome early and set up the Lectern?

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” thereremains just one stumped person. Me. Clearly I gotsidetracked and neglected to write down the name of thisweeks mystery Rotarian. Not part of the plan but just howit seems to have worked out. I get to put a dollar into thepot. Make your guesses so as to support the communityand you too can secure your place on the board.

Our program this week provided by a Creston born andraised native, Jesse Whitehead. Jesse graduated fromPCCS in 2000, attended the University of Alberta. He hasvisited 25 countries on 4 continents and has been workingon Mozambique for five months. What has Jesse beenfoing you ask? His mom will be relieved to learn he hasnot been disarming land mines. Instead he is providingsupport for those that do disarm land mines.

Originally land mines were used in a defensive manner toprotect supply lines and military bases. Beginning in the1950's and into the ‘60's the intended use of land mineshas changed dramatically to one of tactical terror.

The Ottawa Treaty or the Mine Ban Treaty, formally theConvention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling,Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and ontheir Destruction, bans completely all anti-personnel landmines (AP-mines). As of April 2007, 153 countries havesigned and ratified the Treaty. Poland and the MarshallIslands have signed but not ratified. Forty states, includingthe People's Republic of China, India, Russia and theUnited States, have not signed.

The average annual income in Mozambique is $900 peryear. 70% of the population is rural and the samepercentage lives below the poverty line. 34% of theMozambique GDP is concentrated in the capital cityMaputo. Maputo has only 6% of the national populationhowever. A fiscal imbalance by any other name.

Visit www.canadianlandmine.org to learn more about thework being done by Jesse and others to make the world asafer place. Jesse keep up the good work, we are proudof you and support the goals you are working to achieve.

Maybe BOLD PINK will work, nobody reacting to paleorange. I’m trying yet another colour. This week we were honoured to have Elizabeth Cytra, our 5080 District Governor, as guest and visitingRotarian.

In this weeks episode of “Name the Rotarian” Bob Griffithcorrectly identified Harry Haberstock. Each gets to placetheir name on the board. Make your guesses so as tosupport the community and you too can secure yourplace on the board. Wondering if you “guess” yourselfwhen its your turn do you get to put your name on theboard twice? Or do you get to visit the famed hall ofshame where you will be punished by having to watchthe entire Droopy Dog cartoon series without any chips, salsa or beverage. Gasp!

Our program this week was presented by Bill Reid, theSuperintendent for School District 8, Kootenay Lake. Amost impressive amount of information presented duringthe PowerPoint presentation. Kootenay Lake SchoolDistrict 8 is comfortably rated higher than most otherschool districts in the province on most of the measuredmetrics. One area of concern is the native populationdrop-out rate.

Mr. Reid pointed out that the our elected representativesare working to make things even better and there is anoticeable effort to ensure local representation ismaintained. I wanted to include various tid-bits from his

presentation, alas, the file copied was corrupted and assuch no goodies will be forthcoming.

Good luck to Mr. Reid on his forthcoming retirement. Wewish him well in all his endeavours.

Maybe BOLD PINK will work, nobody reacting to paleorange. I’m trying yet another colour. Our club isstill looking for volunteers to coordinate the tentrentals. The Installation of Officers for the Rotary Club of Crestonis scheduled for June 7, 2008. More details will beforthcoming I am certain.

Alvin told us about the Creston Valley Community WalkSafe Program. With the involvement of the ColumbiaBasin Trust and the Community Issues Program thisworthy endeavour is well on its way to becoming reality.Currently John Kettle of Area B has committed $4000.00.Areas A & C and the Town of Creston are each workingtowards assisting in providing funding. Partners includethe RCMP, RDCK, Areas A, B & C, Citizens on Patrol,Community Health, ICBC, Community Stride, SeniorsHall and the Town of Creston.

In this week’s episode of “Name the Rotarian” HarryHaberstock correctly identified Don Low. Each gets toplace their name on the board. Make your guesses soas to support the community and you too can secureyour place on the board.

Today we had the honour of inducting Jay Armitage, thenewest Rotarian in the Creston Rotary Club. LawrenceLavender gave a brief description of what Rotaryrepresents. The four areas of service are Club Service,Vocational Service, Community Service and InternationalService.

Our program this week was presented by Jim Abbott, ourMP in Ottawa. I like Mr. Abbott. Over the years I havehad the privilege (mostly) of meeting and conversing withnumerous politicians. Mr. Abbott is a member of that

rare breed who cares about people and demonstrates awillingness to listen and learn.

Mr. Abbott mentioned the recently created TIOW(Targeted Initiative for Older Workers) program. Thedifficulties facing the forestry industry do mean this isrelevant to Creston and area. The Creston areacurrently has a 5.8% unemployment rate compared to4.2% for B.C. $401,401.00 is going to KES forimplementing the TIOW plan. A big help to be certain.Other Conservative initiatives include a lowering of taxesfor the average wage earner. The GAIN limits regardingearned income before clawbacks kick in are being raisedto $3,500.00.

Maybe BOLD PINK will work, nobody reacting to paleorange. I’m trying yet another colour. Our club isstill looking for volunteers to coordinate the tentrentals.
