MaxLite LED Fixtures Brighten Indoor Recreational Areas at Illinois Metro Center “The new LED lighting in the swimming pool and indoor walking track has made a huge difference in the look of the building. Those areas look much cleaner and brighter than before. In the walking track, the new light is less intense and more relaxing to walk beneath, but remains well lit. The swimming pool looks much cleaner without the yellow light from the old fixtures.” -- Mike Anderson, Maintenance Coordinator, Bureau County Metro Center Located in Princeton, Illinois, the Bureau County Metro Center is a 50,000 square-foot recreational center that offers recreation, exercise and meeting venues for the local community. The facility had aging high- pressure sodium fixtures that produced unattractive yellow light in the swimming pool and indoor track areas. The elevated indoor running and walking track above the gym was lit with 25 200-watt high-pressure sodium fixtures that consume 238 watts with ballast factor. In a one-for-one replacement, the facility installed MaxLite’s DesignLights Consortium®-qualified (DLC) 40- watt LED Parking Garage Canopy Luminaires beneath the 12-foot ceiling over the track. When all of the gymnasium lights are on, the walking track is well lit. To save on additional energy costs at times when the gymnasium is not in use, the facility turns off the main lights and only utilizes the canopy lights over the track. The facility’s 25-yard indoor swimming pool, which features a wading pool andobservation balcony, was lit with 400-watt high-pressure sodium fixtures thatconsume 458 watts when considering ballast consumption. To reduce costs, thefacility waited until a handful of high-pressure sodium fixtures burnt out beforethey replaced 27 of the yellowing fixtures with the DLC-qualified 70-watt FullCutoff LED Wall Packs.

The new bright white LED fixtures eliminated the yellow tinge previously present inthe pool and walking track areas. Additionally, the retrofit will save the center772,650 kilowatt (kWh) of energy and $55,129 in energy and maintenance savingsthroughout the L70-rated 50,000 hour lifetime ofthe LED fixtures, based on a $.65 kWh energy rate.

Funded in part through a grant from Illinois CleanEnergy Now, the metro center purchased the LEDoutdoor fixtures through Crescent Electric inPrinceton, Illinois.
