Potentate’s MessageWelcome to June, Nobles and Ladies! What a

month we are going to have with more parades, the Shrine Bowl in Kearney, the Charity Horse Show in Lincoln, SHBD Show and Shine, the Shrine Soccer Classic, our annual picnic and the Potentate’s Golf Outing! On June 30th, our newest club, the Spirits of the Shrine, host their inaugural Chug N Roll contest.

June 1st is the Shrine Bowl parade and game. Hopefully everyone going got their reservations in and I know Tangier will be well represented by our clubs and units in the parade. For those Nobles and Ladies who can’t make it out to Kearney, I ask for your support of the Charity Horse Show which began May 31st and runs until June 2nd. This organization selected Tangier Shrine’s Transportation Fund to donate a portion of their proceeds in exchange for Nobles and Ladies serving as presenters and providing a little help and entertainment.

Shrine Hospital Benefit Days continues June 3rd with the Show and Shine. The proceeds for this family fun event also go to Tangier’s Transportation Fund. I thank all the clubs and units who participated with a $100 sponsorship and to all of you who come out with your family and friends.

June 9th and 10th is the annual Shrine Soccer Classic. This event benefits all three Shrine Center’s transportation funds. June 9th is the banquet at Tangier followed by the boy’s and girl’s games on June 10th. I’m calling on Nobles and Ladies to donate some of your time to either help at the banquet and/or the games. If you are interested, please give your name to a Divan member or the office and we will pass it along to the committee.

On June 16th, following the Papillion Parade, we will be having a S.M.A.R.T. roundtable. The purpose of is to provide an open forum for discussion on topics such as Nobility concerns, communication, public presence, increased membership participation, etc. More information on this “town hall” will be provided at the Stated meeting on June 14th.

Tangier’s annual Summer picnic will be June 24th. Bring your family and enjoy the food and games. Thank you to all the clubs, units, Nobles and Ladies who donated to this event and to Chief Aides Joe Hodges and Jim “Junior” Smith for organizing the event.

A couple of months ago, I mentioned establishing a “wish list” encouraging Nobles, Ladies, clubs and units to help pay for items and events. Normally these items and events are covered by the annual budget. Unfortunately, this year, despite the enormous effort of Tangier’s Nobles and Ladies, our circus only netted just over $35K on a budgeted revenue of $175K. Your Divan did not want to cancel events like the picnic and the hospital trip. We also wanted to continue building improvements as Tangier Shrine will be hosting CSSA in 2023. Since announcing the wish list, so many of our clubs, units, Nobles and Ladies have generously donated. Those who have donated will be honored with a brick in the Main Room and there will be a plaque in the kitchen for those who donated for its improvements. Once again, I know I speak for the whole Divan, THANK YOU for your support of Tangier Shrine Center!

JUNE 2018TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

ChantersBy: Bernie Hauber

In a continuation of an old tradition, I would like to introduce you to one of our newest members. Noble Virgil Johnson was raised on a farm in Northeastern South Dakota. He attended the University of South Dakota and graduated from the business school and then from law school in 1967 with honors. Afterwards, Virgil spent two years in the military assigned to the Surgeon General’s Legislative Office. After the military, he returned to the Midwest and joined the Erickson | Sederstrom law firm, where at present he is a Senior Partner and Board Member. Virgil has served on several Boards, including Easter Seals Society and Rotary Club. He was appointed Norwegian Consul for Nebraska by King Olaf of Norway in 1986 and currently holds that position. Virgil was raised in Albert Pike Lodge #333 about 3 years ago. Chanter Jack Frost invited him to visit a Chanters rehearsal. His love of music did the rest and he joined the Shrine in 2017. The Chanters are happy that Virgil has chosen to add his baritone voice to our group.

We all know that Tangier is in the second month of parade season. Although the Chanters do not march, we support those units who participate and are “Proud to be a Shriner.” We have often seen how you portray our ideals of fun, frivolity, camaraderie, patriotism, and philanthropy by putting your “best foot forward.” We wish you all the best and especially safe travels for those of you going to the Shrine Bowl on June 2. There was discussion about possible performances this summer (July, August and September). These include performances at local churches and other events. The specific dates, times, and locations will be detailed later. This illustrates that there are often public and Masonic Family events, and if you want us to sing at such events, your request should be received early to verify our availability.

The Chanters are taking a “vacation” break from their usual weekly meeting and practice schedule in June. We plan to resume practice on Monday July 9 in the Main Room at the Shrine Center. We usually start practice promptly at 7:00 pm. Our membership could always use a boost. Any noble with even a small interest in singing and a willingness to join us should contact any Chanter or leave a message at the Shrine Center. That’s my update for June.

Those who wish to sing always find a song. – Swedish Proverb

Nebraska City Apple Jack, Saturday 9/22, Noon line up and 1:00 pm parade.

The Arbor Shrine Club has one little car ready for someone to drive in the parades, contact Dean if interested. We are looking for a location to park the trailer with the Firetruck, if any one has a location please contact Dean.

The onions were about a week late this year because of the cooler weather in Georgia, hope everyone is enjoying them.

The onion recipe for this month is Amish Onion Patties. 1 cup all purpose flour, 2 tsp sugar, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 2 tsp cornmeal, 2 1/2 cups chopped onions, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup cooking oil. Whisk together dry ingredients in large bowl and then mix in chopped onions and milk and mix well with spoon. Drop by spoonfuls into hot oil using close to 1/4 cup of batter for each pattie. Makes 10 to 12 patties.

Hope to see everyone at the parades and maybe we could have a great showing of the little cars this year, the people and kids really enjoy seeing the cars.

Arbor Shrine members having birthdays this month include Dean Jeanneret, David Linn and Randy Fleming.

Arab PatrolBy: Jim Huebner

Well Spring has finally really arrived in the Midwest. Time for those warm weather activities including the upcoming parades and other Shrine events.

Thanks to all the Arab Patrol members and their ladies for another successful Redneck BBQ event at the end of April. Wonderful turnout and lots of quality help as always. Special thanks to Pam and all her helpers for making all the cookies in advance and to the Fuglsang boys and the kitchen crew for the food preparation. The ribs were fantastic. With a bit more preparation and organization we can take this event to the next level in 2019!

Speaking of our ladies, it was good to see Katie Knickman recently as she’s recovering nicely from her fall in April that broke her hip. Can’t keep a good woman down!

We need to be thinking membership and recruiting future marchers with the parade season upon us. We can always dream big and shoot for a goal of one day competing as marchers in CSSA as we used to.

Also need to be getting ready for the Feztival of Trees fundraiser in November. Arab Patrol will be going “solo” this year with our own tree. I know this tree will be as great as the one we had last year, we want to encourage everyone’s input in coming up with some awesome prizes to hang on our tree.

Some June events to be aware of: June 2, Shrine Bowl parade Kearney and game to follow; June 3, Tangier Show & Shine; June 9, Blair Parade; June 10, Shrine Soccer Classic; June 16, Papillion Parade;

June 23, Red Oak Parade; June 24 Tangier Picnic.

That’s all for this month, see you around Tangier.

GreetersBy: Don Larsen

The Greeters would like to welcome Nobles Mike German and Nick Jensen as the newest Members to the Greeters Unit.

The Greeters will not be meeting through the summer months. The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 11th.

The Greeters picnic will be Saturday, August 11th. More information at a later date

We hope everyone has a great summer and the Greeters will be back in the Fall.

Motor ABy: Larry Hulsebus

Our small group is “gearing up” for parade season 2018! A couple of our cars will not be ready for Florence so we will be a small, but mighty presence.

Our June meeting will be June 4th, at Larry and Peg’s house for a summer get together. We invite anyone interested in joining our group to come and join us for a night of good food and fun.

We have no birthdays to celebrate in June, but Darrin and Amy are celebrating their anniversary and we wish them a happy anniversary.

Remember to look for the little ‘57 Chevies at the parades – that’s us – and we have a lot of fun!

Until next month, “keep those gas tanks full, and remember to turn the key.”

Daughtersof the Nile

By: Queen Donna Walter

Finally, we have some weather we can brag about, what a change from the last month. Hopefully the flowers will continue to appear, so we can enjoy the beautiful blooms. May is also the month we honor mothers, so we hope everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day.

Our first ceremonial was held Saturday, May 5, making Vickie Goble a new princess for Sat-ra Temple. I’m so proud of the officers as they did a fantastic job as we welcomed Vickie into the fold.

The Quiche fundraiser was a success thanks to all who purchased them. Thank you, Roxanne Mrazek, for your hard work and all your helpers. The plants and flowers sold by Pageantry were beautiful. A big thank you to that Unit of Sat-ra.

In June the line officers, a few past Queens, and Charlotte Strader, one of our newest members, will head to Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Supreme Session Daughters of the Nile. We will be reporting on that session in the next Hot Sands.

Another newsletter will be published and sent after we return from Cincinnati.

There will be a summer soiree in July, more information coming in the next Hot Sands. The Kids’ Carnival is in the works and Past Queen Angie Huebner is feverishly working on this magnificent event scheduled for Sunday, August 12, in the Tangier Shrine parking lot from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Please make plans to attend, bring your children, grandchildren and the neighbor kids for an enjoyable time. As with all things this stupendous, we need all hands deck to make this project the success it has been in years past.

Our next session will be on Thursday, August 2. We are looking forward to seeing many of you, please make plans to attend.

We are dark June and July. Have a wonderful and safe summer.

By: Captain Josh Madsen

Wow! What a fun month May was. Some of our newest members got the full experience of parade season in the first few weeks of May. It started out with the Florence parade which is always a great turnout and this year did not disappoint followed by the La Vista Parade. I don’t think a single member of the unit left Florence or La Vista without getting drenched in water. The new guys did take the brunt of water which is good for them. Welcome to the unit boys!

If you boys had fun in those two parades just wait until this month. Right off the bat we have the Shrine Bowl in Kearney. For those of you who don’t know there is a cool parade that takes place on Saturday in which you will not be disappointed. We can always use as many members of the unit as possible to help get the paddy wagon to the parade and to participate during the parade. I promise you won’t want to miss the Shrine Bowl Parade again once you have done it. June is the month where parades come into full swing. As always, we need guys to step up and help get the paddy wagon ready every weekend. Whether its filling fire extinguishers or just getting the truck to the parade. Please let one of the line officers know if you can help and I am sure emails will be sent out regarding these times. The parades for the month of June is the Blair parade on the 9th, Papillion is on the 16th, and Red Oak parade is on the 23rd.

June 3rd is the Shrine Hospital Benefit Days Tangier Shrine “Show and Shine”. If you love cool cars make sure to show up to Tangier on the 3rd. The week of the 24th will be a busy one for Tangier. There are plenty of events going on that week if you want to stay busy. On Sunday June 24th is the Tangier Picnic followed by Potentate’s Golf Tournament on the 29th which is a Friday. A new event will be on Saturday June 30th. It’s called the Chug and Roll; be sure to stay tuned for more details regarding this fundraiser. That’s all for this month gentleman I look forward to seeing all your handsome faces at the parades and I guess the ugly ones as well.

Happy Father’s DaySunday, June 17th

JUNE 2018TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

By: Noble Don

When writing these articles, one must always think in the future and hopefully not report any “fake news” within about six short paragraphs.

With that said, boy did we have a great turnout at the Blair Marina for our April 18th dinner meeting, a beautiful Saturday, April 28th, collecting money for Hospital Benefit Days at 204th & Pacific and a wonderful start to the 2018 parade season with Florence, Council Bluffs, and La Vista. Without a doubt we will have had a fun evening, super service, and really good food at the Pizza King in Council Bluffs on May 17th conducting our May meeting, Our Parade Car is registered to be at Tangier for the June 3rd Hospital Benefit Day Show & Shine. Bring a friend and check this fun event out and see some really nice looking vintage vehicles.

Thanks, and welcome to OG Bill German and Lady Colleen for choosing to become the latest in new members of Mo-Ri.

We hope to see many of you at the Blair “Gateway to the West” Parade on Saturday June 9th. The Oasis will be located at the Blair Marina immediately following the noon parade. We will again be the guests of Steve Cook and Noble Jim Ryan providing adult barley pop and Mo-Ri will be providing the all-beef hot dogs and trimmings.

On Sunday, June 10, come on back to Blair and join us at the Lodge building located at 1245 Calhoun Boulevard and enjoy a biscuit and gravy breakfast for $7.00 starting at 7:30 am that is second to none.

Our group has much to offer, especially to our new Shriners. We meet and we eat at various locations and participate in Tangier happenings as requested. Please take a look at who we are and what we do at www.tangiershrine.com and click on Units & Clubs and then Mo-Ri.

The good old summertime officially arrives on the 21st. I thought those March winds would never end.

Don’t let the June bug get you. Do any of you being told this when you were a youngster? I sure do! According to my old faithful Webster’s New World Dictionary – there is a June bug, a type of beetle.

Golden Girls’ monthly noon luncheon will be on Tuesday, June 12. Usual place – lower level (Oasis room) of the shrine Center. Jeane Morgan will be the hostess.

We will celebrate Father’s Day on the 17th. Father’s Day was first observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. Mrs. John B. Dodd had requested the holiday to honor fathers and it was made official by Spokane’s Mayor and the Governor of Washington. However, it was not permanently established until many years later, when President Richard Nixon officially declared the observance of the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in the USA in 1972.

Old Glory will be flying high on the 14th, Flag Day.

Enjoy the summer. Until next month.

Greeting fellow Cavaliers. We had our monthly meeting at Brother Sebastian’s last May 7. We welcome two new members, Steve Reese and Jim Reese. They own Mervin Reese Photography. They were sponsored by yours truly. Make them feel welcome, hopefully they will bring in new members.

Welcome back brother Ron from his long vacation in Arizona. Now we need to get Brother Allan, as he’s recuperating in his winter home in Arizona. Our Illustrious Potentate, Dave Norton attended the meeting and brought us up to date on the improvements at the Shrine. He also encouraged us to find sponsors for the FEZtival of Trees. Any business or persons that we think might like to participate, let the office know and they will try to sign them up.

The upcoming parades are June 9th at Blair, June 16th at Papillion, and June 23th at Red Oak. Please plan on participating as we would love have a large group.

A blonde rings up an airline. She asks, “How long are your flights from America to England?” The woman on the other end of the phone says, “Just a minute…”. The blonde says, “Thanks!” and hangs up the phone. - Till next time.

Tangier Road Runners made nine trips, transporting nine patients, to the Shriners Hospitals For Children – Twin Cities facility in April, and made one trip, with one patient, to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Eleven patients provided their own transportation to the Twin Cities hospital. One patient was transported to Chicago, and one to Philadelphia, by commercial flight.

April Drivers included: H. Fouts, G. Eckert, A. Penner, M. Brooks, R. DeWell, M. Hatcher, K. Throckmorton, F. Kroupa, N. ODonnell, D. Deming, R. Lyon, J. Gathmann, R. Krause, D. Jeanerett, G Bennett, C. Crawford, D. Larson and J. Larson.

Thanks to all for your efforts.

Legion of HonorBy: Jeremy Martin

I would like to personally thank everyone who has purchased flags from the Legion of Honor for the Memorial flag display that we put out every Memorial Day weekend and Veterans Day weekend. Placing the flags in the front lawn of the Shrine always swells my heart with pride and it truly makes the front yard look very sharp.

This year while going through flag renewals and new flag forms, I came across a hand written letter with one of the forms. This letter touched my heart. It states “Thank so much for putting up the flags to honor our Military heroes. What a wonderful gesture. If I can be of any help, please let me know. I am ready, willing and able.” First, thank you so much for the wonderful letter. Second, it is an incredible honor to be a part of an organization that is able to honor the men and women who have served, are serving, and the Patriots who support those who are serving. The Legion of Honor may be a small unit, but we all have big hearts; especially, when it comes to honoring our military.

On a different topic, parade season is in full swing and we have the parade float out and running around. Things are going well thus far, and we will always welcome new members who would like to join the Legion of Honor and join us in parades and other events.

One last thing, I would like to congratulate USAF MSgt Mike Billquist on his retirement! Congratulations Noble Billquist, my Brother, my Friend.

First off, I want to take time to thank the office staff of our Shrine Center. It is so nice to call or stop in and get an answer to every goofy question I have.

We are now into the parade season. Please try to make as many as you can. I know some are harder for clutch cars but most you can make it through. I also know we all have family times we must take part in so just do your best. The more we show off the more new Masons and Shriners we will get.

One more note: Jim Alessandro and I were given the honor of hosting two players and their families at the Shrine Bowl Banquet. Both Jim and I were very impressed with the quality of the young men. The player I sat with was a grandson of a Shriner. He is our kind of people and hopefully a seed has been planted. - See you at the Parade!

JUNE 2018TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

By: Travis Drews, Scribe

Welcome to June where the weather gets warmer and an ice cold beverage or three makes it bearable. Tangier Spirits of the Shrine is a fun new club that’s for Nobles and our Ladies that enjoy local brews and spirits. We have been having a bunch of fun touring facilities and sampling what they brew or distill. Our actual business meetings are very short as we are more about fellowship and fun. Our next meeting will be June 4th at Thunderhead Brewing Taproom at 7:00 pm. The address is 13304 West Center Road #126 in Omaha. Come check us out!

On June 30th at Tangier we will have our first fundraiser called the Chug-n-Roll. The cost is $10 per person or $20 for a team of 2. Doors will open at 11:00 am. We will have bourbon glazed hamburgers, beer brats, chips, and beer brownies for sale. Four teams can compete against each other every round. One person from each team rolls a can of beer down a ramp to the other teammate who then chugs it. Whoever is faster and has the least amount of beer left advances to the next round. This will be a fun event and we hope you can come support us.

Mobile NoblesBy: Dave Stolp

As of this writing we will have completed three parades in May. “OLD 3-5-7” is looking sharp and performing well.

We would like to thank all members and ladies who attended our May meeting held at Larry Drew’s maintenance shop in Yutan. All members and ladies stayed to help with the clean up and polish of the train in advance of the May parade dates (wax on and wax off). Thanks to the ladies who set up lunch. It was a great time. It takes a lot of polish to cover this monster.

All in attendance took the opportunity to view our new trailer that will transport our “Little Train” to upcoming events.

June will be a busy month for the Mobile Nobles to include the Shrine Bowl in Kearney, the Blair parade, the Papillion parade and finally a trip to Red Oak, Iowa.

Check out other events elsewhere in this Hot Sands. Don’t forget Father’s Day.

As always, please remember to support all Tangier units and clubs and Hot Sands advertisers when you can.

Well that’s all for now. See y’all down the tracks.

Greetings from the Shrine Bowl Unit. Congratulations to our Commander John Golden for receiving the “Noble of the Month” award for the month of April. Thanks for all you do for the unit and Tangier.

I’d like to thank the unit members that helped out taking donations during the Shrine Hospital Benefit Days. Also later that afternoon for those that helped out with the players dinner. The contribution of your time is appreciated.

Parade season is upon us and I’m happy to report that the unit’s bus and trailer are ready to go. First off, thanks to Bruce Arp and his lady Ruth, the bus got a new wrap (think paint job) and it looks great. Mac and Chuck refurbished the bar, and a brand new football for the float will be debuted.

The Shrine Bowl Football game in Kearney is coming up and the unit will have a strong presence there as a number of us will be making the trip on the bus.

We’ll see you at a parade.

JUNE 2018TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

By: Jan Moore

Hi all. Faye Daniels, President of the Auxiliary and I, along with our Nobles, attended the annual meeting of the General Womens Auxiliary in Minneapolis, April 22-24. The Tangier Auxiliary took $2500 with us for the wheelchair fund. The money collected the day of the meeting totaled $147,000, this was from all Auxiliaries. We also took three baskets with us to raffle. We made $450 dollars from the three baskets. The people that won the raffles then donated the baskets to be auctioned. We had a great time watching our baskets being sold twice more. We enjoyed having Daryl Finley with us for dinner (he is the hospital representative for Tangier). We learned that all of our efforts will be focused on money for the wheelchair fund. As you know, the kids outgrow and out use the wheelchairs and money is always needed. The money we receive from tabs is always used for wheelchairs. Keep those tabs coming. The treasures I found this month were: five screws, two bottle caps, and $.30. Always fun to see what we get in with the tabs.

The prom was a huge success, we hope to be able to show the video at a future ladies meeting. We will be pleased to accept gowns and accessories that you would care to see out of your closets.

As of this time business as usual for the efforts of the auxiliary. We still need hairbrushes, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Remember that brushes must be wrapped individually. Of course socks of all types, even the tennis socks. We have learned a new method to make hospital gowns made of t-shirts. If you are interested in helping with this project call either Faye or me. We also have a new pattern for the Christmas stockings. Again if you are interested in making these, call one of us.

Enjoy the nice weather despite the high pollen count. Be kind to one another and I’ll talk to you next time.

Corvette ClubBy: Mark Huss

April and May were good months with the Corvette Club. The regularly scheduled meetings were held on April 9th and May 14th where member Keith Kortright cooked up some delicious chicken and we planned our activities and talked about upcoming parades.

The Corvette Club were the cooks and the servers at the April 25th Hamburger Night. Thank you to everyone that attended and helped make the evening a big success.

Hospital Benefits Days went off well. Members of the Corvette Club worked the Bellevue Walmart with much success. It is always good to promote the Shrine and the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

May was the beginning of parade season and the Corvette Club turned out for the Florence, Council Bluffs, and La Vista parades.

Late May and early June is Shrine Bowl and the Corvette Club sponsored the Steak Dinner on May 30th for the players. The Corvette Club also caravanned out to Kearney for the Shrine Bowl parade.

On Sunday June 3rd was the Show and Shine. The Corvettes came out and we had a good showing of cars to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Tangier Corvette Club is always looking to welcome in new members that own a Corvette. The club meets at Tangier Shrine Center the second Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. Please contact Mark Huss at 402-677-4737 or e-mail me at [email protected] if you would like more information about attending a meeting and joining the Tangier Corvette Club.

The Importance of Positive Communication to Children with Disabilities

TIOPOSAPR15shrinershospitalsforchildren.org

The Power of Language Our word choices have a tremendous impact on those around us. Children, especially, are deeply influenced by the language surrounding them – who they become is based on who they are learning to be. The staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children® understands the importance of building confidence and self-esteem in our patients at an early age. Our staff recognizes that while working with children with disabilities, it is imperative to help them develop a strong positive attitude so they will have the confidence to pursue their dreams. To accomplish this, being mindful of the effect language has on children is critical.

Two essential points in using communication as affirmation are accurate wording and people-first language. Always remember to use language that encourages, rather than discourages, the individual. When referring to those with a disability, please remember to avoid labels with a negative connotation, such as:

• crippled• handicapped• lame• deformed

» The preferred word choice is usually:• disability• disabled• the actual term involved, such as, cerebral palsy

or muscular dystrophy

People with Disabilities are People FirstThe second key element of communicating with people with disabilities is the need to use “people-first language,” where the person is the important element, rather than the disability.

For example, try using phrases such as “a person with cerebral palsy” or “a person who uses a prosthetic arm,” rather than defining them by the disability itself.

It is also important to recognize that people are individuals, and to avoid lumping those with disabilities together into one group, like “the disabled,” “the spinal cord injured,” or to refer to “all people with X.” » Another important aspect of using people-first

language is to avoid negative descriptive phrases and terms, such as:

° confined to a wheelchair ° wheelchair bound ° victim stricken with ° suffering

Instead, try saying a person “uses a wheelchair,” or “has cerebral palsy.”

Also avoid value-laden words and phrases, whether negative or positive, because even seemingly positive labels such as “courageous” and “inspirational” can be burdensome to a child, setting unnecessary high expectations, that may be hard to maintain.

As part of using people-first language, it is also imperative to not define people by their disabilities. This is accomplished by emphasizing abilities, not limitations. » For instance:

° Say: “Darlene is an excellent writer,” rather than,“Despite her disability, Darlene is an excellent writer.”

° Say, “Johnny is a child with a disability,” instead ofthe defining, “Johnny is a disabled child.”

Being mindful of preferred disability terminology and using people-first language whenever possible will help children with disabilities become more confident and able to become successful, productive adults.

“We must take language very seriously. The feeling I have is that language is always a reflection of attitude. With the advancement of the disability movement, you

see a change in language.” – Michael Masutha
