What is homelessness, and how does it impact society?
What is Homelessness?
How does homelessness impact our community?
What are the causes or reasons that one may become homeless?
What causes people to become homeless?
Once homeless are there ways to escape their situation?
One Homeless how can I escape or better my situation
• Identify reason I ended up in a homeless
situation
• Economy, Medical condition, disability,
substance abuse, domestic violence, natural
disaster, family burden
• Do not let feelings of shame or pride
prevent you from asking and looking for help
• There are people that care, but you must
also have to care for yourself, meaning
take control of your life, believe that a positive
effort will bring positive results.
• Use local services to educate yourself
about community resources, Police, Fire,
Hospital, and Church.
Who or what is available to the homeless population?
What is available to the Homeless population• US Dept. of housing and Urban Development- many programs to help the homeless• Emergency Shelter Grant program, Shelter and Care program, Supporting Housing program to name a few. (www.hudexchange.info) • HPRP: Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing program used 1.5 billion dollars to help • 1.3 million people prevent homelessness at approximate cost of 1,200 dollars per person.• To find a shelter anywhere go to www.homelessshelterdirectory.org
In Idaho there are many resources to our population • St. Vincent De Paul of North Idaho (http://stvincentdepaulcda.org ) helps our northern Idaho population with shelters(warming centers), case management, career counseling, dining hall, and child care programs to name a few.
• Aid for friends (www.aidforfriendspocatello.org ) non-profit organization that offers emergency shelter, meals, laundry facilities, showers, clothing, hygiene products, in a safe and clean environment.• CATCH (Charitable assistance to community`s homeless) (www.catchprogram.org ) helps our homeless in Ada, Canyon, and Twin falls counties. Offers rental assistance, case management, job search, and Catch match. They state that they achieve 85% self-sufficiency in participating families.• Boise Rescue Mission (www.boiserm.org ) each year serves more than 350,000 meals, provides more than 120,000 shelter beds, and distributes more than 60,000 items of clothing. You can print out a coupon that you can give to a homeless person that will provide them with a hot meal and a place to sleep.
The homeless need help to rebuild their situation with respect and dignity, where there is access to opportunities to move up in life and become self-sufficient. We as a society can help with a “hand up” and to stop looking at it as a “hand out”.
