1. Why you need to sharpen your tools - A woodworker is only as sharp as his tools, and that
is doubly true for woodturners - The rim of a 10” bowl blank at 600rpm travels at 18
miles and hour, no steel could stay sharp that long ! - Working with dull tools is like driving your car with
flat tires, it just is not very satisfying - Many people quit woodturning because they spend
more time sanding than turning, not enjoying turning
- After you get a lathe, a few good quality turning tools, GET A SHARPENING SYSTEM BEFORE YOU TURN ON YOUR LATHE.

2.1 Types of Steel Carbon Steel
Carbon Steel generally generates shower of sparks Sensitive to overheating (Blue)

2.2 Types of Steel High Speed Steel (HSS)
HSS generally generates individual sparks reminding of tracer bullets Not so sensitive to overheating (Blue)
Quality of HSS varies dramatically

3.1 Grinders
10
Tormek slow speed wet grinder (100RPM)
High speed (2800)/ Slow speed (1400) dry grinder 6” or 8”
Shaft balance important Strong motor not required (light pressure applied) Long continuous rating normally not required
(Shaping takes long, nice sharp edge possible)
(Good for shaping, good sharp edge)
