Grameen Foundation is a global nonprofit that empowers the poor, especially women, to end poverty and hunger. We create breakthrough solutions—spanning financial, agricultural and health services—that leverage digital technology and local partner networks to bring people the tools and opportunities they need to help themselves.

Founded in 1997, Grameen Foundation was inspired by the work of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and a global leader in the fight against poverty. We remain dedicated to ensuring that the resolute spirits and hard work of people living in poverty are not wasted. To create modern solutions to age-old problems of poverty, hunger and poor health, we harness the latest technology and work with local and global partners.

Our high standards and efficiency have been recognized by Charity Navigator and Guidestar’s Exchange Seal. For more information, please visit www.grameenfoundation.org

Message from Our President and Board ChairIt has been a year of change at Grameen Foundation. This is our first annual report since Grameen Foundation and Freedom from Hunger joined forces, and the first to share our new look, reflecting our steadfast conviction that breakthroughs to end poverty and hunger are not only essential, but also entirely possible.

Grameen Foundation and Freedom from Hunger came together because of our deep shared commitment to tackling the root causes of poverty and hunger—and because we knew we would be stronger together than working separately. Indeed, the integration of our highly complementary work is generating new approaches and enabling more women and families to create their own paths out of poverty.

We believe there is no greater force than the power of women driven to improve their own lives and the lives of those around them. But, they need resources, tools and knowledge to enable them to break through long-standing economic, cultural and gender barriers that keep families trapped in poverty, hunger and poor health.

To do so, we design strategies that equip people living in poverty with essential tools and knowledge. We bring partners together to break through barriers and implement solutions to age-old problems. And, we evaluate our impact to continuously improve the work we do.

In rural India, tribal women organized into self-help groups have used our nutrition training program to improve their food security, nutrition and health practices. In Burkina Faso, women savings group members have used our mobile technology to connect to formal financial institutions, strengthening their financial security.

In the Philippines and Ghana, small-scale farmers using our FarmerLink and AgroTech digital platforms (respectively) have finally gained access to vital information enabling them to grow more food, increase their financial security, connect with buyers and cope with climate disasters.

In the last year, our breakthroughs have reached 5,568,427 people. These breakthroughs are changing the world, one woman, one family, one community at a time.

Our work is only made possible through the financial backing of our incredible supporters. We thank you.

The year ahead is ripe with new opportunities, and we look forward to sharing these with you. Visit our website, follow us on social media, sign up for our e-newsletter, and read our blog. And please let us know what you think.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Steve Hollingworth President and CEO

Marianne Udow-Phillips Chair, Board

Building Resilience through Financial ServicesGood things happen when women have more control over their finances and more say in household decisions.

In Burkina Faso, constant cycles of parching drought and torrential flooding make life precarious. The amount of rainfall determines how land is used, how families earn a living—and, most importantly, how well they eat. For Georgette Diendéré and others in her community, planning for this type of uncertainty is essential.

Grameen Foundation and our local partners worked with Georgette and other women to start self-run savings groups that also give loans to members. We also provided training in nutrition and household financial management.

Those services opened new opportunities for Georgette. She used her loan to buy a sheep and now has a thriving flock. She is especially proud of the sturdy enclosure she built for them—the best in her community—and is determined to continue building her business.

In the last year, community trainers also helped 928 groups to open savings accounts at formal banks using mobile technology. This allows the women to access the funds remotely and also helps them to build a credit history for the future.

Elsewhere, we are also using technology to help families save precious time and money when they need to make financial transactions. Through our Community Agent Network program in the Philippines, 1,136 sari-sari (neighborhood) shop owners in poor communities are now trained financial agents. Since early 2016, the network of female agents has processed almost 597,000 transactions for their neighbors (such transferring and depositing money and paying bills), while earning additional income for providing these services. In India, we launched G-LEAP, an e-learning app for microfinance staff that helps them teach their clients how to use digital financial services. Since February 2017, female clients of our microfinance partner, Sonata, have transacted US $379,537 digitally instead of traveling long distances to Sonata branch offices.

Changing Perceptions to Improve HealthPoor access to services, insufficient information and local customs can make it difficult to get proper health care and nutrition in poor communities. But that is changing.

Kankuri remembers a time when her husband did not want her to leave the house unless she was going out to sell wood. Back then, she walked almost 17 miles to the market in Abu Road, a town in

western India. She usually earned less than 25 cents, hardly enough to give her seven children nutritious meals, and the long trips took a toll on her body.

She was looking for new options when she learned about PRADAN, an NGO that runs self-help group for local women. With their help, she began growing vegetables with her husband, instead of collecting wood, to earn more money. She also learned about nutrition, health practices, where to access local health resources, and how to

manage her finances. Now, she pays close attention to the food she prepares and also makes sure vegetables and fruits are available in the market for other community members.

Kankuri and her PRADAN self-help group were taught by a community nutrition advocate, one of a cadre of local women Grameen Foundation helped train through Freedom from Hunger

India Trust and its Rajasthan Nutrition Project. Collectively, the advocates have reached more than 30,000 people, many in vulnerable tribal communities. Equally important, we supported gender dialogues between husbands and wives to ensure more equal decision-making. As a result, joint decisions on food purchases increased from 27 to 55 percent, while husband-only decisions went from 69 to 28 percent. And, at the same time that women’s decision-making power increased, so, too, did their food security.

A second program with Freedom from Hunger India Trust and RESULTS in West Bengal and Jharkhand reached 135,838 women, greatly improving their knowledge of the causes of anemia—a leading cause of maternal deaths in India—and preventative action. A study following the training showed that consumption of foods high in iron and in vitamin C (to aid iron absorption) improved by up to 35 percentage points.

In Sierra Leone, we are part of a consortium working to prevent another devastating Ebola outbreak. Funded by Innovative Medicines Initiative, the Ebola Vaccine Deployment, Acceptance and Compliance (EBODAC) project works with and supports the EBOVAC-Salone clinical trial which is testing a new candidate vaccine. Grameen Foundation developed a mobile technology platform that sends alerts to trial participants via mobile phone to remind them of appointments, and updates to the clinical team to help them manage clinic activities. We now plan to pilot a new service to educate community health workers in Sierra Leone on the Ebola virus, vaccinations and other topics via mobile phone.

Additionally, in Burkina Faso, we are expanding a nutrition education program to help families prepare for the lean seasons brought on by drought and flooding, and we also launched a family planning program in Benin.

Building Strong Legacies for Smallholder FarmersFrom droughts in sub-Saharan Africa to never-ending tropical storms in the Pacific, it has been a challenging time for small-scale farmers like Gina Rison and her husband, Nico. In the last several years, they have battled pest outbreaks, typhoons, and drought trying to build a legacy they can pass on to the family they plan to have. Despite the challenges, they remain undaunted.

Although it is the world’s second largest coconut producer, more than 60 percent of the 3.5 million coconut producers in the Philippines earn less than $400 per year. Aging trees that produce less with each passing year are a major challenge, along with erratic weather, disease, and pests.

FarmerLink, a unique digital advisory service developed by Grameen Foundation with a consortium of partners including the Philippine Coconut Authority, links farmers to vital support: early warning weather and disease alerts, individualized farm plans, agricultural training, financial services and market buyers.

“Most of the farmers here don’t have knowledge on what to do with a pest infestation in their coconuts,” Gina explained. “If you are a member, you will be informed through text and they can give you the best practices.”

In just 18 months time, from pilot planning to execution, FarmerLink directly reached more than 28,000 smallholder coconut farmers and their families—benefiting upward of 140,000 family members. Many farmers were trained in organic certification, opening opportunities to earn more through selling high value organic coconut.

In Ghana, we also provided 496,883 rural farmers with up-to-date farming advice through radio shows and agents equipped with mobile tablets as part of our AgroTech program with Farm Radio International. And in Colombia, our FarmerLink initiative helped 2,000 coffee farmers revitalize and modernize their farms using targeted farm management plans and financing provided through the Inter-American Bank and Starbucks.

In the last year, we have launched two new programs to help cocoa farmers in Indonesia and smallholder farmers in Tanzania to build thriving businesses, using digital technology to connect them to agricultural services and financing.
