The School Crest reflects the school colours. The cogwheel in the centre symbolises the school’s continuous strive for progress and development as it undertakes its mission to educate. This basic aim is represented by the open book. The torch represents our students’ commitment to lifelong learning. The four rings reflect the multiracial composition of the school community as it grows, learns and develops together as one united community. The concept of the school as a family is reinforced by the four inter-twinning rings.

SCHOOL CREST

The school flag comprises two main colours – white and dark blue. The dark blue panel in the background represents our teachers and staff who are always ready to nurture and support our students in their pursuit to achieve academic and non-academic excellence. The white colour in the centre signifies the youth and receptivity of our students. The richness of the colour white points to the numerous possibilities opened to our students as they take their positions as adult citizens and contributing members of the community and beyond.

PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD To paraphrase famed philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, we can learn from looking to the past but must move forward for progress to take place. Our school has come a long way since its official opening in 1969 and still remains on firm foundations and principles, governed by our core values of Sincerity, Passion, Integrity, Compassion and Enterprise and centred on the holistic development of our students. In view of the coming merger with Macpherson Secondary School, our school will do well to ensure that it continues to rest upon these cherished ideals.

True to our vision, to be a dynamic school providing holistic education, I am proud to announce that our school has fared commendably in both academic and co-curricular fronts. The knowledge that our students who sat for their O-Levels in 2015 attained value-added results brought us

great joy and this was a testament to their industry and the dedication of our staff. On the co-curricular front, our Shooting and Taekwondo ‘B’ Division teams excelled in the respective inter-schools championships, securing commendable top-four placings. Our Uniformed Groups have continued to grow from strength to strength and it brought us great pride when our Red Cross Youth and National Police Cadet Corps received the Sustained Achievement Award (5 Years).

The school has also continued to provide opportunities for holistic development through its distinctive programmes. For our Applied Learning Programme (Entrepreneurship and Innovation), students from the focus groups were afforded the chance of job-shadowing at established companies such as Reebonz in Singapore

and LEO Digital Network in China. Our students also fared commendably in the SMU Youth Innovation Challenge and the National Youth Business Challenge. Our Hearty Breakfast programme, where students serve breakfast to the elderly at the Tung Ling Eldercare Centre on a fortnightly basis, remains a central part of our Learning for Life Programme (Service Learning), as students learn to serve and serve to learn.

Having spent six wonderful years as Broadrick’s principal, I look back on each of them with great pride and satisfaction. I would not be able to say this without the contributions of my dedicated staff and committed partners. One should always understand that Life is not a destination, but a journey. Even as I bid the school a fond farewell at the end of the year, I must sincerely say that I have had the privilege of embarking on an unforgettable and enriching journey with all my stakeholders, and through our interactions and collaboration, everyone has left an indelible imprint on my heart.

I would also like to offer words of encouragement to our students. My dear students, you are the very reason why schools like ours exist. Our school has done, and continues to do, its utmost to ensure that every student who enters through the gates of Broadrick leaves them an achiever with strength of character. I would like to encourage you to do your very best as you strive towards excellence and to be the best student that you can be. Always keep an open mind and a willing heart and you will find that your quality school experience will stand you in good stead as you face future challenges.

This yearbook serves to offer readers a flavour of Broadrick’s achievements and activities in 2016. I would like to thank the Publications Committee for its work in this publication and may this magazine serve as a fine souvenir for all our stakeholders. Although the words in the magazine vividly describe events and its pictures paint a thousand words, the benefits of the programmes come in a less tangible form, formed in the hearts and minds of each and every child.

SPEECH DAY

27

EXCERPT OF SPEECH BY GUEST-OF-HONOUR – MR JAYSON TANAs you embark on your next step of your learning journey, continuing to acquire the knowledge and skills to prepare yourself for the opportunities ahead of you, allow me thus, to share with you four life values that would help you to succeed in life:

HARD WORK – A news article featured this young lady, Ms Hon Ing Ing, who shared that she did her ‘O’ levels while working full-time and eventually graduated last September with a double major in finance and marketing. I thought her comments epitomise the very core values of hard work; Curiosity, Courage, Determination and Discipline. There is no short cut to success. Your level of success is determined by how hard you work; not just working smart.

EXPERIENCE – Don’t always go by the book. Be willing to accept and take on all types of projects, tasks, assessments, deadlines, etc, given to or thrown at you. Take them on. In fact, create some yourself to widen your perspective. Experience feeds knowledge and improves our skills. Skills, with knowledge, feed success.

SHARE – The community at large, directly or indirectly, does play a part in shaping you as well. Thus, at whichever stage of your life, make a concerted effort to contribute something back to the community. It can be in the form of volunteering your time, skills and knowledge, experience or even finances. The ability to positively impact the lives of others adds a greater sense of balance and value-added purpose to your life. It’s the ultimate success. Serve your alma mater (maybe through the school’s alumni, CCA activities), charity work, community services or at national events, etc. There are plenty of opportunities. Last but not the least, INTEGRITY – Integrity is made up of many core values – Honesty, Honour, Ethics, Sincerity and Trustworthiness. Never trade your integrity for success. Your level of integrity determines your level of success. In fact, your integrity determines your life. So guard your integrity with your life. You lose it, you lose life.

I am not a graduate. I started work after completing my NS. Armed with a GCE ‘A’ level certificate, I started working in a bank. Aspiring to be a more successful person, I left my deskbound job and started a sales career. Today, I own a medical equipment distribution business.

HARD WORK, EXPERIENCE, SHARE and INTEGRITY. These are my cornerstone that I embrace in tackling my goals and achieving success. One of Sir Winston Churchill’s many speeches, then Prime Minister of Great Britain during WWII, is a great source of my inspiration. In his speech to his old school in Harrow, 1941, he said and I quote; “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

If you think you can’t, you can’t. If you think you can, You WILL!” Thank you.

THE WORLD CITIES @ THE PAVILION PROJECT Broadrick’s young entrepreneurs had to think of commercially viable ideas to utilise space at The Pavilion and enable it to gain more recognition and attract potential patronisers. The Pavilion is located at the Far East Square, spanning 9,892 square feet of ground managed by The Global Cultural Alliance, a subsidiary of The RICE Company Limited.

After ten weeks of brainstorming and planning to finalise their proposals, the teams presented their ideas to judges from The RICE Company Limited on 31 March 2016.

The winning team, comprising Jeamne (3A3), Itthisak (3A4), Jervis (3A4), Christabel (3A5) and Sze Leng (3A5), came up with the idea

of an event space with monthly themes and quoted possible logistical requirements and commercially viable rental rates. The judges commented that all five teams had very good information technology skills with professional presentation and good feasible ideas.

This project would not have been a great success without the Applied Learning Programme teachers, Ms Chen Xinyi, Ms Hanna, Ms Wardah and Ms Charmine Wah. And of course, the school is grateful to The RICE Company Limited for their invaluable guidance and contribution.

29

THE A2CE CARNIVAL Held on 28 June 2016, Broadrick Secondary School’s biennial A2CE Carnival was a roaring success and students experienced creative explorations connected to innovation and application. We were honoured to have Mr Colin Goh, CEO of The RICE Company Limited, as our Guest-of-Honour and also as our keynote speaker to share with us his rich experiences as an entrepreneur and how our students can prepare themselves for the challenges in the working world ahead.

The theme for the carnival was ‘Connect-Expanding Possibilities! Bringing the Real World into Learning’. All the activities were specially designed and adapted by the different Instructional Programme Departments using Making Thinking Visible (MTV) routines. The primary school pupils saw scientific theories on pressure, buoyancy and density demonstrated when they built a Cartesian Diver. Our Secondary 1 to 3 students also built their own Clinometer and challenged themselves with Broadrick’s in-house designed National Education Board Games and Chinese Idioms Card Game.

Broadrick certainly looks forward to our next A2CE Carnival as it truly reflects our vision to be A Dynamic School providing Holistic Education.

30

WORLD-OF-WORK EXPLORERS’ PROGRAMME (LOCAL)During the June Holidays, 6 Broadricians had the privilege to be attached to Reebonz Pte Ltd, a famous local e-commerce company, under Broadrick Secondary School’s World-of-Work (WOW) Explorers’ Programme. During the work experience, our students were attached to mentors from different departments, and they each got a taste of a variety of actual work situations through direct observation, applied learning and hands-on participation.

Charlotte Poon, one of the student participants of this programme, was attached to the Merchandise Department of Reebonz. She noted that when selling second hand or pre-owned items, Reebonz makes it a point to highlight the defects clearly to potential customers.

“From this experience, I learnt that honesty and integrity are values we should uphold when we enter the world-of-work in the future.” - Charlotte Poon, 3A5

Another student participant, Tiffany Goh, was attached to the Human Resource Department. She discovered that it is important for any organisation or team to build a warm and welcoming culture, so that the employees feel at home and look forward to work every day.

“I have definitely gained insights into how we can build a more cohesive and close-knit team through this work attachment experience. I am intending to apply what I have learnt to my Student Council work, and help shape a more vibrant culture in the Student Council team.” - Tiffany Goh, 3A3

31

WORLD-OF-WORK EXPLORERS’ PROGRAMME (OVERSEAS)The inaugural World-of-Works Explorers Programme to Shanghai, China took place from 25 May to 2 June 2016. The group of 10 Entrepreneurship and Innovation Club students, led by Mr Lim Shi Hao and Mdm Karen Kim, embarked on a work attachment programme at LEO Digital Network, a leading integrated media firm in China. As part of the learning journey, they also went to the Shanghai History Museum and 上海风雨筑展览有限公司, a company which organises exhibitions all around China and even in other countries. Throughout the entire trip, the students used Making Thinking Visible routines to guide the reflection of their learning. Here are what some of the students had to say.

“Using the 3-2-1 Bridge, I learnt these 3 main points:(1) Having knowledge is not everything because companies want to recruit people with a positive attitude.(2) In any industry, we need to be customer-oriented and consider things from the customers’ perspective.(3) We must always clarify when in doubt so that there will not be any miscommunication or misunderstanding.” - Jervis Tan, 3A4

“At the上海风雨筑展览有限公司, I see that advanced technologies are used throughout the museum, such as the LED, transparent screens and touch screens. I think the company must have invested a lot of money in the infrastructure to create such a futuristic exhibition. I wonder how the designers proposed such creative ideas using such state-of-the-art technology. This trip has been a real eye-opener!” - Jeamne Lin, 3A3

“One of the highlights of this work attachment would be working in such an office environment. LEO Digital Network’s office is very different from other normal offices, most probably because the company is working in the creative industry. The office itself is very wide open with its glass-walled meeting rooms and there are even pets in the office. Other than working, being immersed in the Chinese culture is indeed a very good experience. The Chinese are very proud of their language and culture. After coming back to Singapore, I found myself being able to better speak and understand Chinese.” - Damrongkitkanwong Itthisak, 3A4

32

HEARTY BREAKFASTThrough our Hearty Breakfast Project, our students are given the opportunity to step into the lives of the elderly people who live around the Dakota Crescent area, and touch their hearts with a simple gesture of serving them breakfast and interacting with them. Through conversing with the elderly, our students get to know the real issues faced by Singaporeans, especially the elderly population. Our Broadricians learn to communicate, as well as learn to show concern and empathy. It is our desire to inculcate in them the belief that they can make a difference within their communities and help address social issues that they care for.

33

SEC 1 SERVICE LEARNING

SEC 2 SERVICE LEARNING

The Secondary 1 cohort embarked on a journey to build teamwork and to learn more about themselves. This is to ensure that our students learn the importance and value of teamwork and how they can achieve more together as a team rather than as individuals. These teamwork competencies are an important foundation for the future Service Learning projects that they will be undertaking. By working well in teams, they can better serve the community in their Service Learning groups.

Through our programme, students took part in activities such as tent building, helium sticks and toxic waste where communication amongst teammates was vital in ensuring that they achieved their desired outcomes. Students also went through a Strength and

Weakness game to allow them to find out more about themselves and their peers.

Through a series of purposefully designed activities, students managed to learn the key components in teamwork which can be seen in their meaningful reflections:

“I have learnt to listen to their ideas properly and not interrupt them when they share their ideas.” - Ye Si Yin, 1A4

“We should listen to each other’s’ ideas so that we can put these ideas together to achieve our goal.” - Ira Joy, 1A6

In Project Share – Reaching out to the Community, the Secondary 2 students came together in contributing actively towards helping others in their community. This was in collaboration with the Tung Ling Eldercare Centre located in the vicinity of our school.

To better understand the needs of the elderly in the community, the students visited the centre and interacted with the elderly there through games and performances. Our students became more aware and appreciative of their community and people around them.

The highlight was the Project Share Day which took the form of a carnival. As a class, the students planned for a variety of activities

and games for the elderly to participate on Project Share Day. These activities included bingo and fishing games.

Through this project, students learnt to work as a team, stay focused and committed and make use of communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships. They also had to consider the feelings and thoughts of the elderly, therefore making good decisions in the planning of the activities for the elderly as they assessed their needs. In the interactions with the elderly, students also learnt to communicate with others and be more sensitive to the elderly. Overall, the experience was a fulfilling and enriching one for both our students and the elderly in the community.

34

SEC 3 SERVICE LEARNINGOur Secondary 3 students went through a meaningful Service Learning programme that helped increase their awareness of the issues the elderly face. The learning experiences they went through also helped them to think deeper about how they can communicate well with and engage the elderly in their local communities. Lastly, they also learned how Singapore addresses these challenges as a nation.

A two-part workshop was conducted by volunteers from the HCA Hospice Care and carried out during CCE lessons. The volunteers shared on the general profiles of the elderly and the challenges faced by their main caregivers. This allowed the students to consider the needs of the elderly before they were given a chance to put into practice what they had learnt. The 3E classes visited the elderly in the HCA Hospice Care whilst the 3NA and 3NT visited St. Hilda’s Community Services Centre.

Through creating personal connections with members in the respective centres, the students cultivated an understanding of the elderly community. This helped nurture the belief that care and respect for the elderly is worth preserving. The visits to respective centres instilled a sense of humility and community engagement in our students and also educated them about the different roles they can play to help the elderly in Singapore.

SEC 4 AND 5 SERVICE LEARNINGThe Secondary 4 and 5 students learnt about the visually handicapped through learning journeys to Dialogue in the Dark, Lunch in the Dark and Play in the Dark. They realised how daily routines like crossing the road, having a meal and watching a play as well as characteristics of different environments like a park, a city and a boat ride become a new dimension when a person loses his vision. They learnt the importance of non-visual communication (speaking and listening skills), confidence (overcoming fear) and empathy for the visually disabled (understanding how the blind interact in day-to-day life).

Following this, each class embarked on different types of student-initiated service learning projects through Action, Advocacy and Awareness. During the Down Syndrome Day, Sec 4A1 set up a game stall to raise funds while Sec 4A3 made windmills to raise awareness of Down Syndrome. Sec 4A2 carried out a school-wide donation drive collecting items like detergent, milo, cooking oil, bathing soap, etc. for the Red Cross Home for the Disabled. Sec 4A4 raised awareness about the blind by setting up a booth during recess to talk and do demonstration about the visually handicapped. The Sec 4 Express and Sec 5 classes carried out various student-initiated projects based on the causes they care for like doing posters to remind others of hygiene, showing slides on care for the elderly and issuing pamphlets to residents at Mountbatten to raise awareness of Dengue.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMEStudent Leadership saw a fulfilling year in 2016 as it started off by organising the Secondary 1 Orientation Camp in January. The Secondary 1s had a great time as they bonded with their classmates through games and even learnt the new Broadrick Mass Dance. The Student Leaders Camp held in June enabled the Student Council, Co-curricular Activities leaders and class leaders to experience the Student Leadership Challenge that would guide them in their journey as leaders. The highlight of the year would certainly be the Teachers’ Day celebration as the student councillors worked tirelessly to ensure that the teachers had a wonderful day filled with notes of appreciation, class parties and a lovely concert. They will round off the year as 30 student leaders from the Student Council and CCAs participate in a 5-day Outward Bound School Leadership programme in October that would test their mettle and fortitude as leaders.

37

STUDENT LEADERS INVESTITUREThe Student Leaders Investiture was held on 6 April this year. The investiture marked the handing over of the responsibility of the Student Council from the 17th Executive Committee to the 18th Executive Committee. For the Co-curricular Activities and class leaders, it signified the taking up of the various appointments as they lead their CCAs and classes. A total of 123 student leaders were appointed based not on the virtue of their capabilities but also on their willingness to serve the school. The investiture witnessed the newly appointed President of the Student Council, Christian Fernando Boy from 3A4, leading the student leaders in reciting the Student Leaders pledge as they promised to serve to the best of their abilities, in line with our motto ‘With Pride and Passion, Ready to Serve’!

SEC 1 ORIENTATIONThe Secondary 1 Orientation Camp commenced on 7 January as the students embarked on a 2-day, 1-night journey to familiarise themselves with Broadrick and to bond with their fellow Broadricians. The Secondary 1s started the camp with bonding games led by the student councillors. They proceeded to the Singapore Sports Hub to learn about the history of Singapore sports and the innovation of Shimano bicycle technology. They certainly enjoyed the inter-class games where they played Captain’s ball and Floorball. The Secondary 1s ended the night by learning the new Broadrick mass dance and school cheer.

The Secondary 1s started the second day’s activities with our signature inter-class games of ‘Wet Sponge Captain’s Ball’. They proceed to play the board games designed by the Humanities department. They enjoyed participating at the various booth displays for the Co-Curricular Activities Open House as they explored the variety of CCAs that Broadrick has to offer. The Secondary 1s ended the camp with a rousing performance of the mass cheer and mass dance to loud applause from their parents.

41

ADVENTURE CAMPThe Secondary 3 camp was held from 21 to 23 January at the MOE Labrador Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre. The camp provided an opportunity for the Secondary 3 cohort to come together as they embarked on a new academic year. They were joined by their Form Teachers and the Year Head who were there to encourage them and look after their well-being. Over the course of the 3D2N camp, both students and teachers developed a closer bond with one another. The camp included activities such as rock-climbing, team-building games, outdoor orienteering and obstacle courses on overcoming high elements. Students displayed plenty of teamwork, courage and resilience throughout the camp that fostered new friendships and cohesiveness amongst them.

42

ROAD RUNThe annual Road Run was held on 4 March 2016 at the Geylang Park Connector. The weather was pleasant throughout and the event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Mr Maran Chakrapani, Chairman of the Parent Support Group. Students, staff and parents were in high spirits attending the event. Each class was represented by competitive runners who ran the 3.0km route. Staff and parents also ran competitively in the 2.5km route. Although it was a competitive event, the race was conducted in good spirit. The students cheered eagerly for their friends, teachers and parents as they approached the finishing line to complete their races. The event culminated in a fun run by all students, staff and parents that brought them back to the school compound where the top runners and best performing classes were presented with medals. It was a memorable day where students showed strong class spirit and displayed true sportsmanship throughout the event.

As they have been doing for the last few years, providing refreshments and conducting traditional games like hopscotch and chapteh. The Sports Carnival is truly a memorable day which Broadricians will forever enjoy and treasure.

CULTURAL IMMERSION TRIP TO XIAMEN, CHINAWe present to you a tapestry of reflection of selected students and teachers who embarked on the school’s Cultural Immersion Trip to Xiamen, China from 25 October to 1 November 2015. What we learnt in these eight days: global awareness, cross-cultural skills, the Chinese Language and Culture and a strong sense of belonging and pride to Singapore cannot be easily replicated in the classroom; not to mention the beautiful friendships that were forged with our hosts in Xiamen. We hope the readers can gain some insights into our learning in this tapestry. Enjoy reading!

“This trip to Xiamen was different from past years because of a one-day visit to Xi Yuan Primary in the outskirts of Xiamen for our students to be mentors to the primary school students. Although the school lacks in many modern amenities such as a proper canteen and school field, the staff and students of the school are all passionate about teaching and learning.” - Mr Lim Shi Hao, Head of Department, E&I/ICT

“Nothing can be limited by a language. I genuinely enjoyed my experiences there and that I would do everything all over again. While I was still considering going as my Chinese was weak, I realised it was best to live in the moment and go for it. Although I faced communication problems, the students there were very understanding of my plight and did their best to help me.” - Muhammad Al Hakim Mohd Laras, 4A7

“I was fortunate to be selected to take part in this Cultural Immersion Programme to Xiamen. I was very excited as this was my first trip to China. This trip was educational to me as I learnt more about the great Mr Tan Kah Kee and his contributions. I also learnt how my Chinese surname came about after attending the lecture by Professor Chen.” - Rayner Teo Kai Kit, 4A3

“Compared to Singapore, Xiamen is home to many historical sites such as Mr Tan Kah Kee’s home. To my surprise, Mr Tan’s house is very humble despite him being rich. We also learnt that his grave or the Turtle Garden faces the direction of Singapore. He had made many contributions to Singapore’s education.” - Ashley Teo Xin Yun, 4A3

“From the many animated discussions we had with our hosts about Singapore, I think it also sparked a sense of national pride in us. As we shared with them about who we are as Singaporeans, it forced us to think deeper about what really defines us as a nation and as Singapore Citizens.” - Ms Grace Alessandra, Head of Department, CCE

SUDOKU CHALLENGEBroadrick hosted our annual Inter-School Sudoku Challenge for the 10th year running. A total of 47 schools, 14 Primary and 33 Secondary schools took part in the challenge. 188 students from all over the island came together to pit their logical thinking skills against one another over two intense rounds of puzzle solving.

The participants had the privilege of having Professor Tan Eng Chye, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost of the National University of Singapore to deliver the closing address. Professor Tan talked about how a love of problem solving in his youth sparked a competitive spirit within him, which eventually led him to pursue a career in Mathematics.

After the scores were tabulated, Broadrick managed to clinch 2nd runner up for the Secondary Category, our total score being surpassed only by Anglican High and Dunman High, who were Champion and 1st runner up respectively.

15TH SINGAPORE-HONG KONG EXCHANGE PROGRAMMETogether with 5 other secondary schools, Broadrick is privileged to take part in the 15th Singapore-Hong Kong Exchange Programme. 12 Broadricians from 2A3 and 2A4 were selected to participate in this programme.

After months of anticipation, the Singapore students finally met their Hong Kong buddies for the first time on 16 July at East View Secondary. Spending the first weekend together with the host families helped the Singapore and Hong Kong students to break the ice. The programme officially started at the Welcome Ceremony held at Broadrick where the participants were treated to traditional games. They were also introduced to our Learning for Life programme where they learnt how the visually handicapped cope in their daily life. Likewise, they also learnt how to market a product and design their own badges through our Applied Learning programme. Accompanied by our Broadricians, the 12 Hong Kong students attached to our school attended classroom lessons, harvested spinach at our hydroponics system, visited the elderly at Tung Ling Eldercare and played a variety of sports.

They also had learning journeys to Gardens by the Bay and Asian Civilisations Museum as part of the centralised programmes. The 15th Singapore-Hong Kong Exchange Programme ended with a bang on 25 July at the Farewell Ceremony hosted by Presbyterian High School. Our student, Jerry Wong and his buddy, Lau Lik Tung from Queen’s College, were selected to share their reflections at the ceremony officiated by the Director-General of Education. The Hong Kong and Singapore student participants’ spirits were high as they watched the video montage; the photos helped them to reminisce the time they spent together over the last 10 days. All good things must come to an end. The participants bade farewell to one another on 26 July which marked the end of the first leg of the programme.

Our Singapore participants are now looking forward to flying to Hong Kong, also known as Pearl of the Orient, where they will be hosted by their buddies.

Badminton is fun and interesting. We are able to develop our reflexes and improve our fitness levels. In a badminton match, we can learn from each other’s mistakes and thus improve our skills. Through this sport, we are able to gain quick reflexes and physical strength. - Nixon Wong Zi Jie, 2A4

Badminton is a game I have loved since young. Joining this sport has not only improved my skills but has also taught me more about teamwork. In the concert band, practices are bittersweet. Bitter because we need to invest much time in practising our instruments, even during our holidays. However, the experience is also sweet because of the satisfaction we feel after a performance and the bonds that we forge with one another which are irreplaceable. - Jervis Tan, 3A4

I have also learnt that teamwork is vital in a performance where everyone must put in equal effort and move as one team. - Nur Syafiqah Bte Saharudin, 3A1

Dance has taught me to be dedicated in order to improve our skills. We need devotion, sacrifice, passion, motivation and time commitment to persevere in dance. For the Singapore Youth Festival, we required team work and everyone contributed the same amount of effort so we were successful despite tough competition. - Harshini Jugjivan, 3A4

The practices have helped me overcome my stage fright. Now, I am ready to overcome any obstacles that come my way. - Loh Mei Zhen, 1A3

As the President, I’ve gained in leadership skills. I’ve acquired the confidence and moral courage to make decisions that are beneficial instead of popular. Every member in the Drama Club plays a crucial role and we cannot move on leaving anyone behind. I hope the club will continue to excel from strength to strength. - Queena Ong, 4A6

For Speech Day this year, we performed Spice Up Your Life! which was a two-act play about the importance of values in our lives. NATIONAL CADET CORPSTeachers-in-charge: Ms Baizura, Mr Ivan Lee, Mr Simon Yap and Mr Shahul

I have always admired the way soldiers from the Military Police carry out Precision Drills during parades. I was very fortunate to have been given a chance to learn more about Precision Drills through the Basic Precision Drills Course, which I attended in June. While it was initially difficult, having to coordinate my movements with the rifle, I found that with practice and effort, it became something enjoyable. Now that I am equipped with the basic skills in Precision Drills, I hope to share my knowledge with my fellow cadets. - Lee Jia Qing, 2A2

One thing I love about being a member of the NCC is the camaraderie among the different uniformed groups in school. We often participate in Service Learning projects to serve the community around us. The most meaningful project we embarked on was to put up national flags outside the homes of residents in the Dakota estate. It was a fantastic feeling seeing the smiles on the faces of the elderly residents as we decorated their blocks with our national flags. It made National Day this year even more meaningful, especially with the redevelopment of the very flats we visited. - Md Imran, 3A1

As a Senior Specialist in the NCC unit, one of my responsibilities was to train and develop my cadets in their NCC journey. What I enjoyed most was teaching my Secondary 1 cadets, who had absolutely no clue about NCC, the basics of being a member of the NCC. From how to wear the uniform, to basic drills and even traditions of the unit, all these are important fundamentals for the juniors as they progress in NCC. I hope to continue inspiring and guiding my cadets, even after I graduate, when I return as a Cadet Officer.- Teo Olenzoeu, 4A4

True friendship multiplies the good in life and divides its evils. Strive to have friends, for life without friends is like life on a desert island... to find one real friend in a lifetime is good

fortune; to keep him is a blessing.
