How Families CanBuild Resilience
Being a parent and raising a family has never been easy. The modern
world presents many unique, complex challenges for todays par-
ents. What are these challenges and how can a family be resilient in
the face of them?
Families are bombarded with advances in technology and informa-
tion overload. As a parent, how do you sort through what information
is going to be beneficial to your family and what will be detrimental?
Our childrens world often revolves around social media, making
them vulnerable to cyber bullying, and unhealthy fads and websites.
It can be challenging to connect with a teen who prefers texting with
friends or to find stimulating enough activities for a child hooked on
videos and games.
Many parents deal with sibling rivalry, separation anxiety, peer pres-
sure and bullying. Families also experience the stress caused by
moves, family separations, divorce or becoming a blended family.
Learning not to repeat family patterns and handling well-intended
but unwanted feedback from others are additional challenges. Yes,
being a parent and raising a family has never been easy and still isnt!
Wait, there is hope! Resilience in the face of challenges is something
you do possess! Resilience involves trusting in yourself, recognizing
what has helped you through past obstacles, learning from experi-
ence, levering the resources and strengths of your family, and pa-
tience and kindness with yourself when you feel you have failed.
Resilience includes knowing when you dont have the answer, rec-
ognizing the need for support and taking the steps necessary to get
the help you need. The Resiliency Center can provide the support,
guidance and expert advice families need to feel resilient again
through genuine and caring practitioners who use a strengths-based
approach to helping families.
Practitioners can help you narrow down and implement effective
strategies, assist in identifying family patterns, and normalize your
experience. They can support you through the process of transition
and change and in managing problems through solution-oriented
outcomes and coping skills.
The family-oriented services offered at The Resiliency Center in-
clude: family therapy, couples therapy, child and teen counseling,
Play Therapy, teen groups, parent coaching, and mindful parenting
classes. We offer moms groups, infant massage classes, premarital
counseling, pre-baby counseling, and a divorce support group. We
look forward to supporting you on your journey.
Integrative Veterinary Medicine
A Personal Approach to Pet Care
When your dog scratches and licks relentlessly to the point of inflam-
mation and infection, or your cat is lethargic, not eating and urinating
often, treatment usually involves conventional medicine like antibi-
otics, corticosteroids, antihistamines or shots of insulin.
However, you know theres another approach to healthcare that offers ef-
fective, scientifically-proven treatment of diseases and symptoms.
Complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) is in-
creasing in popularity with pet owners seeking effective and scien-
tifically-proven holistic options, such as herbal remedies, homeo-
pathic treatments, acupuncture, and laser treatments, for their pets.
Alternative medicine can complement conventional medicineus-
ing herbs to enhance natural insulin production or reduce nausea,
performing acupuncture to relieve pain, or applying laser therapy for
better healing.
What is integrative veterinary medicine?
One size fits all in conventional veterinary care is not always effective
genetics and lifestyles can differ dramatically. When the principles of integra-
tive veterinary medicine are applied, then pet healthcare is about selecting
and blending the appropriate use of therapeutic options in order for the body
to effectively respond and heal.
Integrative veterinary medicine is not an either-or solution to com-
bining conventional and alternative medicine for treatment of an ill-
ness. Integrative medicine is a comprehensive approach to wellness
and healing that takes the patient as a wholein this case, your dog or
catinto consideration when looking for the best healthcare and treat-
ment outcome. Additionally, promoting optimal wellness by keeping
pets vibrantly healthy and preventing illnesses are core principles of
integrative medicine.
Dr. Ashlea Erk has been successfully treating clients with mobility
issues and pain management using veterinary acupuncture. With
the recent addition of Dr. David MacDonald, who is certified in tradi-
tional Chinese medicine (TCM), including acupuncture and Chi-
nese herbal medicine, Doylestown Veterinary Hospital (DVH) ex-
pands the range of therapeutic options available to patients and area
pet owners.
Integrative medicine allows the medical team to provide highly in-
dividualized care. We can consciously choose from a variety of thera-
pies to accomplish the proper balance for a healthy life or for a unique
solution to more effective treatment of a chronic illness, explained
Dr. MacDonald.
Your pet means the world to you and
integrative medicine is the care you
want. Doylestown Veterinary Hospi-
tal offers discounted Wellness Plans
and holistic options for comprehen-
sive, personalized veterinary care.

Journeys Spirited GiftsRight in the center of Peddlers Vil-
lage in Lahaska, PA is a locally
owned shop called Journeys Spir-
ited Gifts where customers find a
peaceful and relaxing shopping ex-
perience. Journeys opened
nearly 20 years ago as a cozy little
shop a few doors down, and has ex-
panded several times over the years
to its current spacious and comfort-
able 3000 square foot space.
The moment you walk into Journeys, the peaceful music and scents
offer a sense of calm its an invitation to breathe deeply and quiet
your mind for a few minutes. Products from around the world are care-
fully selected for Journeys. The store offers many tools for managing
spiritual growth and internal stress reduction. Fair Trade Jewelry, di-
verse selection of books, pure essential oil candles, herbal pillows,
and thousands of gemstones are examples of what is available to sup-
port your inspiration in exploring your spirit and healing yourself.
There are also four listening stations so that shoppers can listen to
music selections including many guided meditation and other
peaceful CDs from all over the world.
Philip Glaser, the owner of Journeys, shared a few words with us about
the process that created this space. Over the last few years, weve
been actively searching for more Fair Trade products to offer our cus-
tomers. Fair Trade are products which are made all over the world,
in which the employees and farmers are paid a fair living wage. At
Journeys you can find hundreds of items, including jewelry, candles,
and accessories, which are certified Fair Trade.
The crystal and gemstone collection has grown dramatically over the
last few years, with over 100 types from small pocket stones to large
cathedral stones. We recently travelled across the country on a
buying trip where we purchased over a half ton of amazing new
gemstones and crystals, many of which wed never been able to have
in stock before. Were still getting shipments every week with these
new finds.
Native American-made dreamcatchers spread across twenty feet of
window space in all different colors, sizes, and designs. Another must-
see spot is the chime room, with
dozens of harmonious, perfectly tuned chimes large and small.
Journeys carries the largest selection of dreamcatchers, chimes, and
singing bowls in the area.
Peddlers Village is open 362 days a year, offering 70 unique shops, 5
restaurants, 70 inn rooms, beautiful Gardens throughout, with Festi-

Dr. Uchil Releases Book,
If Not Now, When?Atul Uchil, Ph.D., certified as a master
coach and motivational speaker, re-
leased his latest book, If Not Now, When?,
in May, 2014. Through the story of the
twists and turns of a wild trip to Thailand
and a near-death experience, he reflects
on his journey of finding peace of mind,
as well as meaning, purpose and an
awareness of what is important.
Dr. Uchils last book, Remember Thou
Art Mortal: The Chronicles of a Mending
Heart, an account of his recovery from a
healthy post-heart attack life through eating a natural diet, earned a
2013 Reader Views Reviewers Choice Literary Award in the health
and fitness category.
This is the seventh book authored by the entrepreneur, Motivational
expert and creator of the BRAVO-MOTIVATION system, who has
three decades of experience in business management, coaching and
public speaking. He spent 18 years in a variety of senior manage-
ment roles at several large consulting organizations before founding
his own business consulting companies in 2004. This book has al-
ready received several five-star editorial reviews.
Suzanne Cowles for Readers Favorite writes, If Not Now, When? An
Introduction to Bravo Motivation by Atul Uchil is a powerful nonfic-
tion guide to self-actualization and peace of mind. If you are ready to
give up living to work, then this book is perfect for learning how to
work so we may live. This is a passionate call-to-action for anyone in
the business world needing practical solutions to transcend the sta-
tus quo.
Jack Magnus for Readers Favorite writes, Atul Uchils non-fiction
self-help book, If Not Now, When? An Introduction to Bravo Motiva-
tion had me smiling as I performed the first assignment in the book. I
literally changed the surface of the earth, and that realization had
rather a profound impact on me.
Atul describes himself as a husband, father and world-traveler who
views his professional career as a necessary means to make a living.
After 29 years in the corporate world, Atul decided to devote the rest
of his life to helping people achieve their full potential through tar-
geted motivation programs. (see ad on page 10)
ElectroencephalogramsUnveil Autism
Diagnosing brain activity in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is es-
sential in developing interventions, meaningful treatments and posi-
tive outcomes. This has been made easier with information from re-
search using electroencephalograms (EEGs), a recording of the
brains electrical signals. Research, lead by Sophie Molkolm at Albert

Einstein College of Medicine, identifies processing deficits as part of
the problem with the autistic brain. Malcolms studies have estab-
lished a relationship between the severity of a childs autism and
deficits in processing of sensory information.
The quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) is a specialized
analysis of the electroencephalograms that can take EEG informa-
tion, compare it with the brain activity of normal age mates, and pro-
vide a visual diagram of the brainwave activity. The information in-
cludes details about the individuals efficiency of information pro-
cessing or connectivity.
Clinicians incorporate QEEG data into specific neurofeedback treat-
ment plans that address the identified processing deficits. The spe-
cific treatment plan is carefully tailored to the needs of the individual
and the improvements are remarkable. These improvements include
more efficient processing and functional skills.
Our office is equipped to provide QEEGs as a diagnostic tool for spe-
cific processing problems and neurofeedback as a treatment.
Progress is easily observed and easily measured by a re-evaluation
using a QEEG after a period of time.
Even though the brain changes slowly,
progress with neurofeedback can be
seen almost immediately. Training
needs to continue over time to reinforce
more efficient neural pathways. Indi-
viduals and their families report positive
and happier outcomes from keeping up
with their treatment. These changes are
permanent and can continue improving
over time.
More information about QEEGs and autism can be found at the International
Society of Neurofeedback Research website, ISNR.org.
Neurofeedback is also effective with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder,
learning disabilities, head injuries and migraines. (see ad on page 29)
Three Body PurificationThe ancient Oriental understanding that human beings have non-
material bodies in addition to their material body has been rediscov-
ered by the West in modern times. This discovery has taken various
forms. Some build directly upon the ancient work (e.g. Yoga, Taoist
chi kung); others seem to be more or less independent discoveries
(e.g subtle energy medicine; some aspects of holistic health).
This rediscovery is of utmost importance to those interested in maxi-
mizing their own potential and that of the human species as a whole.
For approximately the last 500 years, the most transforming force on
the planet has been science. It has had both good and bad conse-
quences and has undoubtedly shaped the lives of all of us. It eventu-
ally came to be called objective science in recognition of the fact
that its progress was based on turning our attention outward and treat-
ing everything perceived as objects. The rediscovery of the nonma-
terial bodies requires that we direct our attention inward. This will
permit us to construct a subjective science to complement objec-
tive science. This science will give due importance to the enormous
human capacity for feeling and show how giving appropriate atten-
tion to our feelings will aid our evolution.
Three body purification is based on the ancient Indian teaching that
we have two nonmaterial bodies: a) the causal body which is the
source of our thoughts and b) the subtle body which is the source of
our feelings. The nonmaterial bodies pervade the material (physi-
cal) body just as radio waves pervade the walls of a room.
Three body purification was developed by Shyamji Bhatnagar as an
InnerTuning practice associated with his theory of MicrochakraPsychology. Shyamji is a master of sound (Naada Yogi) whose long
career is international in scope. His theory of Microchakra Psychol-
ogy posits 21 microchakras within each of the classical seven chakras.
Patterns of openings within these microchakras contribute to our
positive thoughts and feelings; patterns of blockages contribute to
negativity. Shyamji uses both his subtle and powerful voice as well as
the tambura (a long stringed instrument) to bring healing openings
to the microchakras. This process is part of the three body purifica-
tion.
In the Fall (November) purification, the following are also used: fast-
ing (unless inadvisable), cleansing herbs, husks, supplements. en-
ergized water, high quality protein and fruit shakes, yoga exercises
and walks on our private 12 acres. In addition to this, the winter (De-
cember) purification includes one or two meals of organic root veg-
etables, beans and grains. For further information, see
www.chakrainstitute.com. (see ad on page 23)
Whats in Your Fillings? Many years ago I met a woman who was seeking a replacement for
her mercury fillings. I explained to her the various options: composite
resin fillings(white fillings), ceramic or gold inlays. After much dis-
cussion she was left unconvinced and underwhelmed. Shaking her
head, she asked, Cant you put some-
thing thats healthier for me in my
teeth? A bit exasperated, I quipped, I
can stuff broccoli into your teeth but it
wont hold up very well.
I like to think I have developed more
patience and tact over the intervening
years. Be that as it may, now days when
patients are concerned with the safety
of materials used in dental treatment,
we have a slightly different discussion.
-
Creating Community Magazine 215.345.6525 www.CreatingCommunity.com18
I recommend that the patient undergo a laboratory screening test
called Clifford Test(Clifford Material Reactivity Testing). This test cre-
ates a list of over 16,000 dental products and materials(including
various implant products) that a person can check to see if he is sen-
sitive to a particular material. This unique, personalized list is devel-
oped by analyzing the patients blood for any reactivity to the thou-
sands of dental materials currently used.
To have this testing done, a dentist can order a blood draw and the
patient can go to a lab(i.e. Quest Labs) to have the blood drawn and
prepared for shipment to Clifford Labs. In about a week the patient
and the dentist will receive a booklet that will list most dental prod-
ucts and materials used today. Next to each product and material will
be the designation suitable or not suitable. Using this booklet, the
dentist can select materials that are more biocompatible with the in-
dividual patient. Whether its a new filling, crown, bridge or denture,
the patient can be confident that the foreign material replacing the
once living structure is safe and friendly to the body. By Dr. Hyo J. Lim,

Reiki
and ChildrenExposing children to Reiki can create a greater awareness of them-
selves, help them center and balance, and guide them to a life with
empathy and compassion. The essence of Reiki Healing is love. Adults
question and sometimes struggle with the concept of Reiki, children
just know it so clearly.
Children are less encumbered by life experiences which makes them
the ideal channel for Reiki energy. Their healing times are much
quicker than that of adults too. Some benefits to teaching Reiki to chil-
dren:
- Improves concentration
- Enhances relaxation and sleep
- Reiki is calming and balancing
- Encourages self-awareness and enhances self-esteem
- Reiki can help with emotional and physical issues (Doesnt re-
place consulting your doctor)
If you have been a student of Reiki, you know the life changing expe-
riences one can have.
Magic Hands, Level I and Level II Reiki for children 7-12 years of age,
is taught at Circle Of Miracles Church several times a year. The in-
structors, Annette and Lynda, have both been teachers and have
developed a very special program for initiat-
ing children into Reiki.
[email protected] for dates.
They also have just started to share
with other Reiki Master Teachers what
they have learned and how they work
with the children. (Next class Dec.
12&13, see calendar listings). (see ad

Five Tips
To Beat Holiday StressThe holiday season can by joyful but also stressful. Many people feel
rushed, overcommitted and worn out; however, you can proactively
develop healthy strategies for a better holiday season.
1. Say No. Set boundaries and only agree to activities that you can
realistically handle. Mindfully choose activities that nurture rather
than exhaust you.
2. Delegate. Ask others to step up and contribute. Assign tasks to part-
ners, relatives or kids so that all responsibilities do not fall on you.
3. Get Enough Sleep. Being well rested will increase your chances of
feeling good and enjoying quality time with others.
4. Learn from the Past. Reflect on your past emotional triggers and
proactively develop a coping plan. If there are people, places or situ-
ations that are likely to interfere with your happiness, think about posi-
tive strategies to handle the situation beforehand.
5. Do What You Love. Think about what you love most about the holi-
days and make space for the parts that you most enjoy. Cut out the
things that deplete you.

New Years Resolution:Your Vitamins A TO Zinc
Most of us have been tempted to start taking a vitamin supplement.
Maybe we saw a TV commercial touting the latest remedy to cure
chronic fatigue or various aches and pains.
In the past decade, we have witnessed an increased growth in the
use of vitamins. What was once considered nontraditional is now
becoming mainstream medicine. Routinely ophthalmologists rec-
ommend patients take Lutein to pre-
vent macular degeneration and car-
diologists recommend omegas for pa-
tients with heart disease.
For years, we thought that taking a
One-A-Day vitamin was the best
method. This contained many types
of vitamins in a convenient daily dos-
age. The problem with a prepack-
aged vitamin is that the amount of
each nutrient is fixed. Studies have

shown that half of all patients taking a multivitamin are functionally
deficient in one or more essential nutrients that are vital to good health.
In 1993, a cutting-edge technology that can accurately measure in-
dividual levels of nutrients was developed called Micronutrient Test-
ing by Spectracell Laboratories. Utilization of this test may improve
the quality and length of your life. This new test offers the advantage
of obtaining your own profile of vitamin, mineral, fat, antioxidant, and
protein deficiencies. Research shows that these deficiencies sup-
press the function of the immune system, contributing to diseases such
as arthritis, Parkinsons, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and
fatigue.
This test measures the essential nutrients within your white blood
cells. White blood cells carry a persons nutritional history for six
months. Other blood tests can only provide someones nutritional
history for one moment in time and can only detect a few deficiencies.
Therefore, this new test is crucial for anyone concerned with achiev-
ing excellent health.
Who should get this FIA test?
Ideally everyone! Even people who eat a balanced diet, exercise, and
take vitamins can benefit. Specifically, this test combined with an-
other urine test can uncover the true causes of ADHD, depression,
anxiety, headaches, and insomnia. So if you are inclined to start a vitamin
regimen, we urge you to discuss with your holistic doctor these options avail-
able for specifically measuring your blood nutrient levels.
Is this FIA test covered by health insurance?
Yes, insurances cover half of the cost of this test. Your blood is drawn
in your doctors office and the results are available in two to three
weeks. Your doctor will explain the results to you in detail and order
all your necessary vitamins. This is the only test of its kind to uncover
your deficient nutrients accurately! So if you are inclined to start a
serious vitamin regimen and continue on the road to wellness, we
urge you to discuss with your holistic doctor these options available
for specifically measuring your blood nutrient levels.

A Little Slice of UtopiaEach year, at a private retreat nestled in the scenic Maryland country-
side on the banks of the Susquehanna River, pantheists, Pagans, and
free spirits of all types come together to create the Free Spirit Gather-
ing a mid-summer, clothing-optional, family-friendly community
in celebration of friendship, spirituality, and diversity.
The retreat, Camp Ramblewood, of-
fers a variety of amenities. Enjoy stay-
ing in a rustic group cabin with com-
fortable memory-foam mattresses or
set your tent camp up under the
shady trees. There are also hot show-
ers, flush toilets, an in ground pool,
fresh water lake, hiking trails, and
even a labyrinth. Plus, transportation
is provided for those who need assis-
tance getting around.
The enclosed dining hall provides 3 meals a day, including vegetar-
ian options, by meal plan or ad hoc. Additionally, there are food-truck
vendors and nearby restaurants, some even deliver, or bring your
camp stove and cook your own meals.
There is plenty of programming across all five days to entertain chil-
dren, teens, and adults alike. Truly gifted people cover a wide range
of topics of interest. Its through these workshops that we are able to
gather, share, learn and grow both individually and as a community.
There are always a variety of rituals to choose from in addition to the
festival-sponsored opening, main, and closing rituals for all attend-
ees to enjoy. Additionally, Music fills the air, and you are bound to
stumble across something to stir the soul. Come dance, sing along,
and raise the energy within you and the gathering. From the chants
sung in rituals, on up to the bands with a spiritual focus that grace the
main stage, you will find music everywhere.
Spend some time getting to know other free spirits while drumming,
dancing around the campfire, attending a workshop, or just relaxing
by the pool. Make friends that will last for a lifetime. One teen attendee
says The Free Spirit Gathering has been my home for the past 10
years, even if it is only five days out of the year. I have a whole other
family there.
This years festival runs from June 16-21 and will celebrate the 30th
anniversary of this sacred, family-friendly, midsummer festival. Our
website, www.freespiritgathering.org, has more information and pric-
ing for the full festival, the weekend, a day, or just a concert and there
is plenty of free parking. We hope to see you there around the fire!

Mental Health Benefits
of Yoga
I am often asked by curious friends, what issues do you see the most
of in your psychology practice? It doesnt take me long to answer,
anxiety, with depression as a close second. Anxiety is rampant in
our society and in many of our lives. Some people find ways to man-
age their stress and anxiety on their own, or through their community
and self-care skills, while others may find themselves at a crisis point,
needing more professional help. Mindfulness, Meditation and Yoga
are some of the best tools we have.
As a therapist, I initially focused on traditional tools acquired in my
training; Psychoanalytic Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, In-
terpersonal Therapy, and often a referral for a medication consult. All
of these methods worked, to some extent. But clients needed more:
Mindfulness. After attending several trainings on the benefits of mind-
fulness training I began to incorporate it into my work. Teaching
people to non-judgmentally experience their worry, stress and anxi-
ety, paradoxically encourages it to be released. When we release the
grip, even of our own thoughts, they become less powerful. This is at
the core of Yoga practice.
Research now supports what many mental health practitioners have
been discovering; that mindfulness and yoga supports treatment.
Adding yoga to traditional therapy or medication can propel recov-
ery (Streeter et al, 2010). We now even have new methods of teach-
ing and practicing Yoga that are specially designed to help people
with mood disorders, anxiety and trauma (Bennet, et al. 2008).
Meditation and Yoga have become a constant recommendation in
my practice and in many of my colleagues practices. We teach it, we
can release 5-10 thousand years of limitations in the area of your life
that corresponds with the specific Bar being touched.
The Access Bars have assisted tens of thousands of people worldwide tochange many aspects of their body & their life including sleep, health and
weight, money, sex & relationships, anxiety, stress, disabilities & so much
more. At worst you will feel like you have just had a phenomenal massage; at
best your whole life can change. (see ad on page 47)
Kill with your
Neti PotNeti-pots are traditionally used to flush the sinuses and carry-away
pathogens with a saline balanced solution. Unfortunately, the bacte-
ria and fungus stick rather well to the nasal mucosa and very few are
flushed out. Most of these nasty pathogens adhere to the mucosa in
what is called a slime-layer or Biofilm. Within this slime layer,
they are well protected and thrive within the warm moist sinuses. In
fact, bacteria and fungus can double (divide and create new organ-
isms) every 20 minutes. The slime layer protects the bacteria very
well from antibiotics and the fungus, are not affected by antibiotics.
All of this power-flushing does very little indeed to resolve an over-
growth of pathogens or stop a sinus infection.
We all have fungus and bacteria growing in our sinuses at all times.
We breathe them in the air and the sinus mucosa traps them so that
they dont make it into our lungs. When the numbers of invasive patho-
gens gets too high for our immune system to keep in check, we call it
an infection. The symptoms can range from head-aches to tooth-
aches, fever, dizziness and severe congestion.
A much more powerful manner of Neti-Pot use is to deliver an antimi-
crobial agent to kill fungus and bacteria instead of trying to merely
flush them away. By using an enhanced aqueous silver colloidal so-
lution, you can kill them both by the millions. You simply load the
solution into your Neti-Pot and pour it in one nostril until it comes out
the other. Then, trap it there by placing one finger over each nostril.
Since the solution does its killing over the course of 10 minutes, it is
best to leave it in for 10 minutes or so before releasing it. So sit down
and read a book or a magazine. Then return to the sink and let the
residual liquid drain out. Doing this morning and evening when you
are suffering from an infection is phenomenally effective at reducing
the number of bacteria and fungus in your sinus.
Remember though, any salt
will ruin a good silver colloid;
even tap-water will ruin it. So
either use a dedicated Neti-
Pot for the colloid or rinse
yours thoroughly with de-ion-
ized or distilled water. If you
dont have an infection, then
doing this every week will
simply help your body to keep the fauna and flora in check and re-
lieve a great burden on your immune system. Remember, anything
growing in your sinuses will eventually appear in your mouth, your lungs,
your gut and throughout your body. Lets keep it clean.

MONDAY NIGHT MEDITATION What can meditation do for
you? In the novel Siddhartha, Herman Hesse writes, Knowledge can
be communicated, but not wisdom. Mindfulness allow us to clean the
mirror of the mind so that what is reflected leads us to peace and
harmony in our lives. Meditation can do that - enabling better
discernment, lovingkindness, improved sleep, contentment, stress
reduction and more. Then the wisdom can appear - or for many - be
remembered. Really - theres nothing to it :) Come and just BE. It can
be your most powerful weekly practice. 8-8:45 pm. Yoga Vibhuti.

The DEADLINE for our JANUARY/FEBRUARY NEW YEARS Issue is DECEMBER 15th 37
Role of Integrative health interventions:
Industrialized world brought us processed foods and chemical which
are challenging our immune cells by presenting as heavy antigenic
load to our intestinal immune system. Processed food also change
the healthy balance of bowel flora (bacteria) leading to leaky gut.
This microbial imbalance leads to increase free radical formation and
inflammation of joints.
We should focus on reducing antigenic triggers, balancing inflam-
matory mediators and restoring healthy flora in the gut. This approach
halts inflammation and prevents autoimmunity. Try reducing un-
healthy levels of emotional and physical stress by incorporation of
meditation, yoga and exercises. This approach can help you become
stronger, youthful and free of inflammation, you will be on the path to
defeat autoimmunity. (see ad on page 12)

Rina has been collecting crystals & fos-
sils for over 23 yrs. She is a member of
The Phila. Mineralogical Society and
has been on collecting trips. Marcia has
been managing the family businesses
for over 40 yrs. Her warmth and charm-
ing personality add a lot to Rinas Rocks.
Were a family owned business which
means we put a lot of love , care, and in-
tegrity into Everything we do! Namaste,
preach it, we also do it ourselves. In the last few years I began to real-
ize, however, that I wanted my clients (and others) to have a safe place
to learn and really practice these techniques in a non-judgmental
and non-competitive environment. With that vision, my colleague
Dr. Kathryn Shipley, and I, recently relocated our practice to add an
adjacent yoga studio. While we have the lovely traditional small yoga
classes, which are all open to the public, we are now beginning to
incorporate small yoga groups with more directed practice for mood
disorders, anxiety and trauma (LifeForce Yoga). The natural blend
of therapy and yoga seems obvious to us now, but it is still in its in-
fancy and we have much to learn about its benefits. (see ad on page

Lets Turn Off Inflammation
and Defeat AutoimmunityHow do we develop autoimmune diseases?
You may already know, immune system is our defense system and
protects us from day to day threats such as infections, allergens and
even helps us fight serious cancers. Unfortunately, in some cases
immune system can turn against our own body, usually it happens
when we are exposed to unwanted environmental triggers or have
undiagnosed infections. In such situations, our immune cells are
stimulated by these noxious stimuli and become hyperactive. Scien-
tists believe that disorderly hyperactive immune response, which I
call ADHD of our immune system, leads to production of chemicals
called cytokines feeding to destructive chemical reactions. This ar-
ray of chemical process leaves us with a pathologic and compromised
immunity and a inflamed body.
How can we detect Autoimmunity and Inflammation?
I try to explain my patients, this is like a tsunami of cytokines spreading across
our body, it can reach every cell or tissue and depending upon the DNA of the
culprit agent, our immune cells will target tissues and organs. This process
leads to cellular and DNA damage leading to joint damage or organ failure. It
has many ways to present such as inflamed joints, skin rashes, anemia, fever
and fatigue. Diagnosis of inflammation and
autoimmunity can be done by obtaining
history, physical exam and ordering blood
tests like ESR, CRP and antibodies called
RF and ANA. Interestingly enough, in the
last decade, extensive research has con-
cluded that many previously considered
benign conditions like diabetes, asthma,
heart disease and dementia have inflam-
mation in the background as major con-
tributing factor.
Mind-Body link and role of stress:
Hundreds of clinical studies looking at the relationship of stressed
mind-body and autoimmunity suggest a direct relationship. Triggers
such as intense mental, physical stress, lack of sleep, processed food
allergens and chronic infections cause second hit phenomenon.
This means that in genetically predisposed individuals, certain trig-
gers will precipitate autoimmune diseases. Identifying and neutral-
izing environmental and nutritional allergies and lowering antigenic
load can help down regulate inflammation and risk of autoimmunity.

Transcranial Magnetic
Stimulation (TMS)
New Hope for DepressionMajor Depressive Disorder affects nearly 15 million Americans an-
nually. Unfortunately, depression treatments don't always work. As
many as two-thirds of people with depression aren't helped by the
first antidepressant they try. Up to a third don't respond to several
attempts at treatment. If you have tried a number of different antide-
pressants only to find that they either do not help or the side effects
limit your ability to take them, then you are experiencing what we doc-
tors call Treatment Resistant Depression.
Brainsways Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
launches a new era in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder and
offers real hope and a breakthrough treatment for those with Treat-
ment Resistant Depression Brainsway Deep TMS is safe, non-inva-
sive and directly targets the brain region that is responsible for de-
pression. The client sits comfortably on a chair and a cushioned hel-
met is gently placed over the top of the head. The helmet generates
brief magnetic fields, similar to those used in magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) systems. These magnetic fields briefly stimulate the
brain cells (neurons) to start functioning normally, improving all
depressive systems. TMS is performed in the Psychiatrists office and
requires daily sessions of 20 minutes over 4 to 5 weeks. After each
treatment, the client is able to drive, return home independently and
follow their normal daily routine since there is no anesthesia and
minimal, if any, side effects.
I have set up the Brainsway Deep
TMS system in my office in
Jenkintown and am excited to
offer this treatment to all those
who have struggled with their
depression for years, feeling
trapped and hopeless with no
adequate solution. Many have
tried other alternatives such as
electroconvulsive therapy
(ECT) which can work well
sometimes, however ECT requires anesthesia and is known to cause
memory loss.
TMS was FDA approved in 2008 because it has been proven to be a
safe and very effective alternative to medications. TMS has helped
many thousands of depression sufferers break through the sadness
and start anew.

sion - Nov. 3rd or Dec. 1st 6:30-8pm at The Daily Grind, 261 Old

The DEADLINE for our JANUARY/FEBRUARY NEW YEARS Issue is DECEMBER 15th 39
Boosting Your
Immune SystemIn todays world of fearful news reports, Ebola
scares, Enterovirus, SARS and more, there is
only one way to help yourself and your loved
ones. Every report has one common denomi-
nator. Those with the strongest immune sys-
tems will have the best chances of survival.
Whether you believe these news reports are
fact or hype, having a stronger immune sys-
tem can benefit you for a happy healthy life.
Dr. Gary Scardino has been studying health for
over 25 years and has developed a program to address the most impor-
tant aspects of better health. First, we must understand that there is no
such thing as an immune system. I am sure you can name the cardiovas-
cular system, the pulmonary system and even the digestive system. But
when asked to name the immune system you might hesitate as you re-
alize you are naming other systems parts. The truth is that the immune
system is actually the other systems in our body working efficiently with
each other and doing their jobs. Blood cells, digestion, endocrine, pul-
monary and more, every system has a part to play in our immunity. When
any part is not working efficiently then we are at risk of weakened de-
fenses and more likely to suffer from an illness.
The nervous system plays the most important part in this process. Think of
the brain and spinal cord as the conductor in an orchestra. It is the conduc-
tors job to direct and inform the rest of the musicians of the parts to be
played. The cond
