Never has the need been clearer – pun intended – that every auto glass installation is completed by a qualified technician and in a “certified” auto
glass repair facility. The complexity of today’s vehicles, and the ongoing technical advances in vehicle design and equipment, demands that technicians and shops meet or exceed the changing requirements to complete safe, high-quality auto glass repair and replacement.
In British Columbia, we are fortunate to have the only government certification and apprenticeship program for automotive glass technicians in North America. However, when it comes to auto glass shop standards and certifications, these have been set by insurance companies, claims outsourcers, or are internal company programs.
The auto glass industry is in a unique position today to take control of its own standards and develop ones that put safety and quality first! The Automotive Retailers Association (ARA) took the lead in 2013, and began the development of a “Certified Auto Glass Service” program. This initiative is driven by and for the automotive glass repair and replacement industry in British Columbia.
The Certified Auto Glass Service program will certify and identify auto glass service providers that have achieved the highest industry standards for quality, safety and service for the repair and replacement of automotive glass. The program will ensure that customers receive the best in auto glass replacement. The ARA will identify and promote Certified Auto Glass Service providers to customers to ensure they have access to safe, high–quality repairs.
The Certified Auto Glass Service program is grounded in the program mission statement and goals.
Mission statement To provide the motoring public of British Columbia with the highest quality workmanship, safety and customer service for the repair and replacement of automotive glass.
The goals of the Certified Auto Glass Service program include: • Developing an industry defined auto glass
service certification program that sets the standards for safe, quality auto glass replacement in British Columbia.
• Improving the performance and practices of the auto glass industry and raise their level
Creating “Clear” StandardsThe ARA’s Certified Auto Glass Service program will certify and identify auto glass service providers that have achieved the highest industry standards.

of professionalism.• Ensuring the motoring public in British
Columbia receives the highest standards for the repair and replacement of auto glass.
• Creating public and stakeholder awareness of the need for certified, safe auto glass installation that reduces the risk of injury and/or death from automobile accidents.
• Improving customer and stakeholder confidence and satisfaction in the auto glass repair and replacement industry.
• Providing increased value to current and future ARA members through the identification of Certified Auto Glass Service providers to the motoring public.
• Developing ARA brand awareness to the motoring public and stakeholders.
Program benefitsThere are several benefits of becoming a Certified Auto Glass Service provider including: • Promotional material identifying your shop
as a “Certified Auto Glass Service” provider
– posters, brochures and promotional materials available for display in your shop.
• Television and social media based advertising to promote the Certified Auto Glass Service program.
• Priority on ARA coop advertising. • Rights to inclusion of the ARA “Certified
Auto Glass Service” logo and marks in your advertising.
• Program information and your certified auto glass service provider name are listed on the ARA website.
Program requirementsThe Certified Auto Glass Service program requirements were developed in consultation with the auto glass industry. Meetings throughout the province were held to get industry feedback.
The program requirements are defined in several key business and technical areas to ensure all glass repair and replacement is completed by a qualified technician at a certified shop. Each glass shop applying
for certification must meet minimum requirements in several key business and technical areas. These areas include:• Business standards • Facilities requirements• Tools and equipment• Parts and materials• Personnel requirements• Regulations and standards
A key component of the Certified Auto Glass Service program is the ongoing governance and audit. Each glass shop will undergo a facility inspection annually and each technician at the certified shop will have to demonstrate the ability to complete safe quality windshield replacement.
The program is voluntary and open to all auto glass repair providers in the province and is administered by the ARA. The Certified Auto Glass Service program Guide and application forms will be available shortly at ara.bc.ca n
