Can-Do, Will-Do Attitude: What is it?

How would you define a “Can-Do, Will-Do” attitude? Would anyone like to share some characteristics that come to mind? Raise your hand or share some thoughts in the chat box! !While you’re responding, consider these characteristics: !• Eager willingness to accept and meet challenges • Marked by a willingness to tackle a job & get it done • Confident & resourceful in the face of challenges a can-do attitude • Marked by purposefulness & efficiency • The quality of being efficient & enthusiastic

The 12 C’s of Can-Do Teams

There are 12 “C’s” of Can-Do Teams !We’re going to go over each one, but really quickly here’s what they are so you can see the vision here. !1. Clear Expectations

2. Context

3. Commitment

4. Competence

5. Charter

6. Control

7. Collaboration

8. Communication

9. Creative Innovation

10. Consequences

11. Coordination

12. Cultural Change

Creating a Team with a Positive, Can-Do, & Will-Do Attitude Session 1 of 2 !

1. Clear

Expectations

The First C is “Clear Expectations.” !This means your team needs to: • Know who is in the Leadership Roles • Be Organized • Know the Resources – where are they? Ask! Is there a binder? Who do I need to reach out to (military POC)? • Reach out to existing Support Networks and BE a Support to each other. Who are our biggest cheerleaders? • Have Position Descriptions. • Have clear Performance expectations. List what you shall do or deliver, what level should be performing at? As a volunteer we may not have such clear expectations, but it would be nice to know what’s out there. • Manage leadership and team member expectations

Page 8: Creating a Team w a Positive, Can-Do & Will-Do Attitude - 2015 FEB NG VTT Session1 of 2_Scripts

Volunteers

Creating a Team with a Positive, Can-Do, & Will-Do Attitude Session 1 of 2 !

2. Context

A successful Team needs some “Context.” What are our tools? !Teams need to:

• Have Understanding of how we fit into the big picture. • Define things for team members and for others • Know and express the Big Picture; the goals, the mission, the vision • Are we doing our best to achieve our goals? • Can we give someone an elevator speech about our goals, mission and vision? !

Another element of Context is about Identifying the importance of what your team is doing. !And finally, Context includes understanding Regulations so that things are done well and done properly. It keeps us out of trouble!

Page 9: Creating a Team w a Positive, Can-Do & Will-Do Attitude - 2015 FEB NG VTT Session1 of 2_Scripts

Volunteers

Creating a Team with a Positive, Can-Do, & Will-Do Attitude Session 1 of 2 !

3. Commitment

Can-Do Teams need Commitment. !Team members need to ask themselves some questions. !Do you want to be here? If you show up and be on this team, do you really want to be here? Maybe you were voluntold?

Do you want to make this work? Doyou want this team to be successful?

Do you feel valuable to this team?

Do you feel recognized for your efforts?

Do you feel like you are growing? In what areas?

Are you enthusiastic? !How often do we ask ourselves these questions? Does anyone have an example of a time they asked these questions? Did it help you clarify your role? Did it re-energize you? !Thanks for sharing!

4. Competence

Competence is an essential “C” for Can-Do Teams. !Does your team have the Capacity? Maybe you don’t have all the tools in the toolbox. Do a weather check and think about whether you have all the tools you need to “fly your plane,” to get up and go and reach your goal or destination. !Another question to ask is: Does the team have the right person for the right job? Does a team member have a “mad dog skill” at something to help get the job done? !What are some essential tools in the Competence Toolbox? Can anyone think of anything? Raise your hand and share your thoughts. !Some tools might include: • Existing Skills – maybe several people have a similar skill. • Training for new skills. What can we do to gain more skills? What can we do to build up weaknesses and gain new strenghts? • Access to resources • Support – If you don’t have the support with the level of confidence you need to do what you’re doing, it can be frustrating! Make sure you have the right support from each other. Look right, look left -- gain up, gain down, gain all around! !That last one, support, is so important. How many of you have heard this saying?

“gain up, gain down, gain all around”

It’s so true!

5. Charter

Having a charter is important in our volunteering, isn’t it? !When you go bowling and you put up the bumper lanes, you’re ensuring success. By having rules and regulations we are in essence putting up the bumper lanes! !Having a Volunteer Agreement Form lends legitimacy to what our teams do. It gives us a defined mission, vision, and goals as well as timelines and strategic plans. !Having a charter helps with Coordination with Family Program staff and the Command, doesn’t it? Finally, having a charter gives our team Recognition and validity. It helps us to move forward so people don’t think we’re doing something willy nilly? !How many have been volunteering long enough to remember Family Support Groups? Back then we were often referred to as bonbon groups or coffee groups. Now we have training, education, regulations and recognition. We’re a working team! !By-laws can be defined as a charter. Whether you are a massive organization or smaller group, a charger or by-laws can provide the recognition you need to get the job done. !Again, the charter goes back to our Second “C” – Context. Knowing what the expectations – and regulations– are helps us do our job as a team to the best of our ability.

6. Control

There are people who want to control “the world”, right? What do you think I mean by the idea of “Control”? Do you think this is about being the boss of the world? Telling people what to do without any feedback or input? Of course not! !It’s about being: • Empowered. We have to be empowered to have control over what we are responsible for. • It also allows us to Take Ownership • Understanding boundaries & Limitations – again, the bowling lane example! If we know what lane we’re bowling in, we know our boundaries and limitations for overall success. • Know your “Level of authority.” We know what it is, how far we can go! Many years ago, a volunteer on a t-shirt committee was creating the shirts, taking the orders. She was also supposed to be getting the quote from 3 different vendors with a clear level of authority to come back with the best deal.

She came back with a lot of definition as well as her “best definition” of an order and had placed a 5,000 shirt order! Make sure everyone knows their level of authority – flip it around and ask how far can we go, are we allowed to be a decision maker? !Volunteers care so much that sometimes it hurts. We all have this ownership of the volunteer program, but the “world doesn’t revolve around me.” Make sure the boundaries of control are clear!

7. Collaboration

Collaboration is SO important to the success of any team endeavor. !To collaborate at the highest level, teams need to: !Understand things like:

• team and group process • Stages of a project, for example • Roles & responsibilities (who has what position & what task) for your Volunteers, staff, command !

Collaboration also involves: • Cooperation. How can collaboration work without cooperation? Right? Team members have to work TOGETHER to get things done. • Team members who collaborate are

• Good Problem solvers • Able to effect Conflict resolution • And able to exercise good meeting management. To have a successful meeting, it takes more than one person. Make sure all the right people know! Keep things on task, too. !The bottom line – collaboration gets things done!

Volunteers

8. Communication

Communication! “Can-Do Teams” have effective communication skills. !Team leaders and members are able to communicate • Clear priorities of a task • Establish methods for feedback -- Ask your leadership, how often do you want us to communicate? What is the best method? • Provide regular leadership information • Are Honest • And communicate using Diverse delivery !What have communication methods do you use? • Phone Tree • Email • Secure, private website • Text messages • Social Media (like Facebook private groups, Twitter, Pinterest) • Mail !The bottom line is – are we getting our message out, communicating effectively? !For those of you who said other, what methods do you use? And raise your hand if you have an opinion about what is most effective today.

Volunteers

9. Creative Innovation

Another key element in a successful, Can-Do Team is a climate of Creative Innovation. !Members have a: • Willingness to change and grow • Reward new ideas • Build on their Competency “C” with Training • Build on their Communication” and “Collaboration” “C’s” with Team building • Encourage think tanks !Would anyone like to share how you’ve seen Creative Innovation at work in your unit or wing? !Thanks!

10. Consequences

Consequences sounds like an uncomfortable topic, doesn’t it? The truth is, consequences are “a result or effect of an action or condition” and that can be great or it can be an opportunity to learn and grow. !Consequences can be at the Team and/or the Individual level.

Whatever the level, Team members need to be: • Responsible and Accountable • Be prepared for the Rewards, Recognition, and the Repercussions • Know that Finger pointing -- good & bad – may occur. Team members might hear things like:

“Great job Sally!”

“Can you believe she did that?” • The Consequences of our Team and Individual actions will Have an Impact, whether overall gains or overall losses. !Would anyone like to share some examples of consequences they’ve experienced or observed? What did you learn as a result – as a team or as an individual?

11. Coordination

Coordination builds on all of the “C’s” we’ve talked about so far. A successful, Can-Do team brings Clear expectations, Context, Commitment, Competence, Charter, Control, Collaboration, Communication, Creative Innovation, and Consequences to the table when it comes to Coordinating the big picture. !Some key elements to Coordination include: • Central leadership • Strategic Planning • Asking the big questions, such as “We provide a service, are we working together?” • Making sure the team is Cross-functional, Cross-educational (have training to pick up for someone else), Cross-understanding. In our careers, this might mean working with multi-department teams. In our volunteering, this might mean working with all levels of the volunteer structure, from the command

to Family Programs and in between.

Volunteers

12. Cultural Change

The final “C” is about cultural change. If we’re going to have a successful “Can-Do Team” we need to do a weather check. Are we experiencing cultural change? We might be talking about a command change, a structural change as a result of a state or national policy change. !Successful, Can-Do Teams: • Assess the Climate • Encourage Inclusion • Learn from past • Ask questions • Assign or work with Change Agents to help navigate the change. Who are your cheerleaders? !Next week, we will dive deeper into how Can-Do, Will-Do teams tackle Change.
