In The Beginning…• District and High School

Administrators attended a Mathematics Administrator Academy where Claran presented

• Claran was then brought to the high school

KHS Math Across the Curriculum Workshops with Claran• Half day in-service with all teachers

– overview of using math & technology in all subject areas

• Met with department chairs• Met few teachers in each subject area

(few hours)– increase ACT/Workkey question awareness– PE –target heart rate– Social Studies – war statistics– English – Night – graphs– Science – no common curriculum, not using

data• Met with dept chairs as recap

Work with Just Math Teachers

• Met with math teachers periodically – analyzing ACT/Workkeys questions– created common curriculum– aligned each course to IL Assessment

Framework– decided to create common assessments

with Workkey/ACT like questions

Pushing Calculators• Increase in calculator usage

• purchased 150 TI-84 calculators to be shared with 11 math teachers

• Students in Algebra 2 and above required TI-84 for class

• Scientific calculator required for any class under Algebra 2

Algebra 1

• 2 year program for lower achieving students (now dropped)• 2 hour program (1 year) – low achieving students (now

dropped)• Repeat classes for failing students until 2007• Adopted new Prentice Hall Algebra 1 textbook for 150

students - ability grouped• Implemented Carnegie Learning Algebra 1 with Cognitive

Tutor for approx 200 students – needed classroom computers – E2T2 grant – 8 computers in each Alg 1 classroom

• 2008-2009 – continuing with two Algebra 1 programs, heterogeneously grouped, some co-taught, some not, scientifically based research

math class for juniors not strong enough in their math skills to enroll in Algebra 2

Entering 9th grade students not ready for Algebra

look back at KJHS• Connected Math Project

• Teachers at KJHS noticing low scores – brought in math consultant– Students were exposed to 6th & 7th grade

math books, but not 8th grade math– Teacher turn-over high, Connected Math

PD needed for new teachers– Great gains in ISAT, but not on ITBS data

(some students went backwards)

Hired Math Coach to Implement Changes

• Working 4-5 days a month• Revised pacing charts to phase in 8th

grade math books, and phase out 6th grade math books

• Multiple classroom observations• Met with each teacher (coach)• Implemented consistent lesson plan• Getting teachers to work together

collaboratively• Inventoried & organized materials so

everyone has equal access to resources
