Wikis (www.WikiSpaces.com)

A wiki is a FREE website and there are no ads!It includes the ability to collaborate with colleagues and students. (I’ve only scratched the surface of what can be done!)It’s easy to create, edit and maintain. If I can do it, anyone can!FYI - The word wiki comes from the Hawaiian word for “quick.”

Use it to: Communicate with students, parents and the community.Design motivating and engaging learning environments and materials.Facilitate student clubs. Improve personal productivity and organization.Participate in collaborative inter-class, inter-department/grade level, inter-school and international projects.Support Professional Development and Professional Learning Communities.Transform what it means to teach, learn and understand!

Now it’s your turn!How to Create a Wiki

1.Go to www.wikispaces.com

2.Choose “I'm a teacher” - then “join”

3.Choose a username and password; Choose a name for your wiki. Your address will become: "[chosenname].wikispaces.com.”

4.Fill in school; subject; grade level; click “create”

5.Click on “Pages” in the News Feed.

Let’s Customize Your Wiki

1. Click on "edit” on this page. You have to chose “edit” every time you want to make a change.

2. A toolbar appears. It's similar to Word

3. Start writing. You can change font, color, size of text and alignment. (See toolbar)

4. Create a heading or a message. ie: “Welcome to 1st Grade”

5. You have your home page! Let’s fill it with content!

Upload Pictures1. Go the internet and find an image.

2. Save it onto the desktop or flash drive.

3. Use the “file” icon to upload picture (after you chose “edit.”)

4. Click “upload file”. Find the picture file and click on it, hit “open”

5. When you see the file, double click on it.

6. Preview it, center it or change it’s size, add a caption etc. Then “save.”

Embed Videos 1. Find a video you like on YouTube,

TeacherTube etc.

2. Go to “share” then “embed” (The embed code is a really long mumbo-jumbo address that starts and ends with a "<" and a ">")

3. Copy the mumbo-jumbo code

4. On the wiki toolbar, click on the TV (these are all widgets)

Embed Videos (con’t)5. Click on "video” - then the type of video

(you tube etc)

6. Paste the embed code (mumbo-jumbo) and click save

7. NOTE: the embed code physically puts the video on your site versus a URL that links the video to your site.

8. Preview it, center it or change it’s size, add a caption etc… Then “save.”

Upload Documents (ppt, word, pdf, audio etc)

1. In the toolbar, click “Edit” then “file”. It's to the left of the TV

2. Click on "upload" to browse and find your document, then choose it.

3. Double click on the file itself after it appears to post it on the wiki.

4. Preview it, if you like where it is, “save” it.

Link websites - Creating hyperlinks

1. Copy website address (URL) that you want.

2. Click “edit” then on “link” then “web address”

3. Name it in “link text” check off “new window”

4. Copy the URL into the “address” field

5. Then click “add link”
