Welcome to Rolls-Royce – and some incredibly innovative engineering powered by the art of STEM

It’s amazing what you can achieve when you combine Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths with a burst of creativity and a splash of smart thinking.

At Rolls-Royce, our engineering triumphs simply wouldn’t be possible without these subjects. The products we make are the result of lots of careful scientific, technological and mathematical thinking combined with engineering genius and some real artistry. In fact, a lot of the people who work for us don’t think of our products as products at all – they say they’re like works of art.

In this book, you’ll be able to colour in some of those products to add your own touches of creativity – it’s a great way to relax, and to improve your concentration while you’re at it. You’ll also get to discover some of the amazing things you can do, all thanks to the art of STEM.

using 3D printing with a 1.5m diameter front bearing housing

for the Trent XWB-97.

“When I started as an intern at Rolls-Royce, I was lucky enough to witness the first ever Trent XWB roll off the production line and start its journey to Airbus in Toulouse. Victory Road in Derby was lined with hundreds of people there to watch the parade of the first ever Trent XWB. This was a proud moment for the company, and I felt proud to stand with so many fellow engineers cheering on the engine as it passed on its convoy.”

That was… A close-up of our Trent 1000 engine Made up of some 18,000 components, the Trent 1000 engine was especially designed for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It first entered service in 2011, and it’s 12% more fuel-efficient than the Trent 800, which entered service in 1996. In fact, it’s the quietest and most reliable engine for the airplane. At take-off, each of its fan blades carries a load of 90 tons – that’s like hanging nine London buses from the tip of each blade!Here are more fascinating facts about our Civil Aerospace engines:

The core of the Trent XWB is capable of withstanding operating temperatures of up to 2000 Kelvin (1726°C) - this is nearly as hot as the

surface of the sun.

XWBs on the Airbus A350 produces enough thrust to

power all nine of the Red Arrows at once.

The brain of the controls system, the Electronic

Engine Controller, consumes just 140W when flying.

That was... Part of the EJ200, the Rolls-Royce Defence jet engine that powers the Bloodhound SSC Bloodhound SSC is a UK-led, global project to build a supersonic car that will not only beat the current land speed world record, but also smash the 1,000mph barrier. Over 60 Rolls-Royce STEM Ambassadors are Bloodhound Ambassadors, inspiring young people about this amazing project.

The flames you can sometimes see at the back of the Typhoon

is the afterburner. Afterburners can significantly increase

thrust – but they burn a lot more fuel, so they’re only used

for short periods.

The maximum thrust supplied for the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II could support the weight

of 17 Minis.

Our LiftSystem features the latest in digital control, with the processing power

equivalent to playing a PlayStation non-stop for

14 years.

“The UK’s submarine fleet are each powered by a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR). Energy generated from the Reactor Core heats up the Primary Circuit water, which then passes through the Steam Generator tubes. Heat transfer across these tubes causes the Secondary Circuit water on the outside of the tubes to boil. The steam produced is used to drive propulsion steam turbines, which then turn the propeller. That is the art of STEM.”

That was... The MT30 Marine Gas TurbineThe turbine is based on the Rolls-Royce Trent 800 aero engine. The engine is featured in the Type 26 Frigate ships in the UK and the Zumwalt-class destroyer ships in the US. Both ships are truly futuristic looking. The compressor blade is part of a team of blades squeezing air into a smaller and smaller space before the combustor. The blade has to operate at over 1000°C in the incredibly hostile environment of the engine.

80% of the gas turbine science used in our

engines for aerospace, power systems and marine is based on similar technology.

Even in waves of up to six metres high, our dynamic positioning systems are

capable of holding a vessel within two metres of its

intended position.

Why would you find a ketchup bottle on a ship’s bridge?

To mark which pump is switched on – in the days before our technologically-

powered Unified Bridge, that is. The Unified Bridge has simplified the pump buttons, and replaced banks of screens with just one 10 inch console.

The Polar research vessel we designed, ‘The Sir David

Attenborough’, will do a wide range of tasks, including an acoustic

survey. To support that, it can tow up to 12,000 metres of wire – that’s

equivalent to the length of 100 football pitches.

for a range of vehicles to connect the engine with the vehicle itself, and the driver

There are 85 washing machines in the MTU production plants in

Friedrichshafen. They wash all components that belong in an

MTU engine. Some parts have to be washed up to eight times before they

can go into an engine.
