CREATE for STEM
Event Promotion Social Media Strategy The purpose of this document is to outline a systematic social media strategy for promoting CREATE for STEM’s events.
By scheduling tweets in Hootsuite, we can plan a steady stream of content for each event. The volume of the content will depend on the event’s priority level.
Platforms Twitter (@create4stem) Our priority. A combination of having the most social media followers here and the platform’s brief average content lifespan means we’ll post here the most often.
Facebook (facebook.com/create4stem) Our audience needs to be grown. For now, only the most important events will be promoted here.
YouTube (CREATE for STEM Institute at MSU) Another opportunity for growth. Quotes culled from recorded talks have the potential to make for good Twitter material later on.

Graphics Event-specific graphics catch one’s attention in the sea of text on Twitter, and they make good use of the slider on the home page of our website.
Template
Created in Photoshop or Illustrator. Text is Gotham font and given a small drop shadow. Out-of-focus background image should be some MSU setting. Dimensions should be 580px x 393px so that it fits the size of the slider on our home page.

Events with maximum promotion priority (e.g. specific seminars and talks)
At least one week before the event - Create a promotional graphic - Put the graphic on the site’s homepage slider - Send out an initial tweet
Three days before the event - Tweet text-only during 9AM-10AM hours - Tweet text-only during the 10PM hour
One day before the event - Tweet text-only during 9AM-10AM hours - Tweet graphic during the 10PM hour
Day of the event - Tweet text-only during 8AM-10AM hours
Sample Schedule
These events feature high-profile guests for whom we want a large audience. We create a graphic and highlight it prominently on our website, assuming that some visitors to the site have come primarily for more information on the event.

Events with moderate promotion priority (e.g. CREATE Science Seminars, Co-Integrate Math Talks, Mathematics Education Colloquiums, PER Seminars)
At least one week before the event: - Send out an initial tweet
Three days before the event: - Tweet text-only during 9AM-10AM hours
One day before the event: - Tweet text-only during the 9AM-10AM hours - Tweet text-only during the 10PM hour
Day of event: - Tweet text-only during 8AM-10AM hours
Sample Schedule
This is the standard level of promotion for our public-oriented events. A series of tweets serve to notify and remind the public of the event.

Events with minimal promotion priority (e.g. STEM Education Post-Doc Meetings, STEM Alliance Meetings)
One day before the event - Tweet text-only the 10PM hour
Day of the event - Tweet text-only during 8AM-10AM hours
Sample Schedule
These events are mostly for an internal CREATE for STEM audience. We assume the primary audience is already aware of the event; these two tweets function mostly as reminders.
Ideas for keeping the event alive after it’s over - Write an article summarizing the event - Post a recording of the event on our YouTube page - Tweet key quotes from the event, linking to either the summary article or the
YouTube video - One or two such tweets every day for up to a week
