Symop is a professional association of industrial solution manufacturers founded in 1907. It represents companies that manufacture or market digital production tools, pro-duction machinery and technologies, equipment, compo-nents and tooling, control and quality devices and robotised technologies. These technologies are used in the mecha-nical engineering, automotive, aerospace, rail, shipbuilding, energy, luxury goods, health, food processing, paper, wood, construction, chemistry and plastics industries. Each plays a strategic role in increasing clients’ industrial competitive-ness, both nationally and internationally. Symop is a key member of the Federation of Mechanical En-gineering Industries (FIM) and a founding member of the In-dustry of the Future Alliance (AIF). Its 270 industry members have 16,500 employees and a turnover of 2 billion euros. Symop works with and for its members in four main areas: encouraging modernisation by becoming a player in indus-trial transformation, recognising and gaining recognition by being part of a community of committed manufacturers and experts, fully grasping sector issues through awareness of technological and economic opportunities, and crea-ting new commercial opportunities by providing business support.
A “market” expertiseSymop closely monitors the structural and temporary develop-ments of markets in which its members are involved and runs special economic indicator studies. These are carried out in a way that ensures statistical confidentiality.
A mandateSymop has been commissioned by the French Institute of Sta-tistics and Economics Studies (INSEE) to perform sector surveys for the main production areas it covers.
A networkSymop belongs to several European committees. Its economic analysis is enhanced by its knowledge of international markets.

Our sectors’ economic climate: the recovery continues2016 saw plenty of political and economic upheaval: the Chinese stock market crashed, oil prices plunged to under 20 dollars, there was a downturn in Brazil, the vote for Brexit, and the surprising result of the US elections.
In France, headwinds interfered with accelerating growth (+1.1%), in part due to terrorist attacks and a rebound in oil prices causing a slight reflation. Yet the business climate im-proved as the months passed, as it did everywhere in Europe. With households regaining their confidence, the French economy performed better and finally started to show signs of recovery. Better margins allowed businesses to increase investment in 2016 once again (+3.6% following +3.1% in 2015). Over-amortisation for production equipment played its triggering role.
French business activity began to grow once again, with higher domestic demand and a rejuvenated export market characterising the second half of 2016. Investment in pro-duction assets significantly improved over the year, espe-cially during its last few months. Manufacturers enhanced their productivity by using process automation, the flexibi-lity of machines, and online control systems. Multifunction machines, robots, and control and measuring systems were more sought-after as a result of the increased domestic demand.
As for export, although business from developing countries decreased, the demand for certain industry sectors, packa-ging, cardboard conversion and production line machines, remained high. Asian and Indian business and the US upturn allowed for activity development.

2017: finally, a return to growth?Because of the improvements seen in Europe, the French economic growth forecast has risen to 1.6% from the 1.4% pre-viously predicted for 2017.
Temporary support measures brought in, including the em-ployment plan and household tax measures, will again bear fruit this year. Households have rediscovered their confidence, as demonstrated by increased investment in property (+3.4% expected) and greater household consumption, expected to grow by +1.9%. However, business activity will remain limited by high unemployment and sub-par industrial competitive-ness.
Production equipment suppliers saw a clear improvement in business during the first part of the year, undoubtedly linked to anticipated orders before the over-amortisation measure coming to an end in April.
Macroeconomic projections for France indicate that GDP growth is continuing and gradually accelerating: following an annual average of 1.1% in 2016, economists are expecting to see 1.4% in 2017, then 1.6% in 2018 and 2019. If so, French na-tional exports should benefit from both a European upturn and extra demand from the United Kingdom.
