National FFA ConventionLouisville, Kentucky October 27th to November 3rd 2013

On Sunday, October 27th, four teams left for National Convention. The airports were a little slow that day, and two flights were canceled while another was delayed. All the teams had a bit of an adventure getting to India-napolis, from being split up and flying by themselves, to spending a night in Vegas. Nevertheless, every member made it to Louisville safely and ready to take on the Nation. The teams performed well and had a lot of fun com-peting. Agricultural Sales was ninth overall, with Jacquelyn Brown receiving fifth individually. The team con-sisted of Jacquelyn Brown, Gabrielle Redhead, Rachel Boggs, Hannah Kyzer, and Katie Burkhart as the alternate. Livestock Evaluation was third in the nation, and Claire Gladman was fifth high individual. The team members were Claire Gladman, Sammie Beck, Jessica Juvinall, and Cali Drake. Both Veterinary Science and Agricultural Mechanics placed silver as a team. Vet Science had Ellie Puttman, Grace White, Sydney Beck, and Bree Swanson competing. Ag Mechanics consisted of Derick Shurr, Mitch Garvin, Zack Allen, Derik Florey, and Griffin Brewer as an alternate. Everyone learned a lot from their different competitions and had a wonderful time competing. One Crater FFA member ,Christian Inkley achieved the highest degree in FFA and both Claire and Jacquelyn earned $600 cash scholarships for placing fifth in the Nation. In addition to competing, the group visited differ-ent places important to Kentucky. First, they explored Churchhill Downs and its museum. It was a wonderful experience to learn the story behind horse racing and see the beautiful, historic grounds. In addition, the group attended a few horse races, and experienced both the excitement of racing and the excitement of betting. The teams also visited the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory and were able to get some beautiful wooden bats. Members fell in love with the green rolling hills of the countryside while they drove to the Kentucky Horse Farm, which was yet another experience altogether. The National Convention Center offered numerous activities that made thetrip even better. The teams loved going to sessions to both experience the energy and the power of the FFA as well as listen to the inspiring keynote speakers. The theme of Nationals this year was “Ignite FFA,” and members can agree they were “ignited” by the sessions. In addition, the Career and College Fair, as well as the FFA Shopping FFA were great spots to explore. On Sunday, November 3rd, four teams returned from their week-long adventure in Kentucky. They returned with many memories and hope to compete on future teams.

State Soils Judging ContestDuring the month of October, we had a team of four students, Pierce Gierloff, Tanner Brotherton, Logan Krishche, and Sarah Howell studied the science of Soils Judging with Mrs. Kostman and help from Mr. Bran-don Hall. These students placed 2nd in the district with Pierce Gierloff placing first high individual. After a few more days of practice, the team packed up and headed to Dayton for State Soils. After an action-packed day of judging, Crater walked away the 13th placing team at State. Congratulations Team!

Football GatesWe would like to give one GREAT big thank you to everyone who worked football gates. The job isn’t

glamorous but is helpful for those at the game and as a fundraiser for chapter activities. We appreciate those students who were willing to give up their time to help.

Thank you everyone!

On the 8th of November our chapter was invaded by several of our state officers. As they took over Mr. Miller’s and Mrs. Kostman’s classes fore a day of fun, leadership, and inspiration. Jake White and Sarah Rutledge spent the day building bal-loon towers to teach students the importance of a strong foundation. Aaron Morland and Rem-ington Frazier built and tested popsicle headache racks in Mr. Miller’s classes in order to find the best headache rack to build for the Dodge Ram trucks to protect their precious pillow pets. The day was full of laughter, and memories.
