ASME B16 Standards Committee, is under the Board for Pressure Technology Codes and Standards (BPTCS). 7 Subcommittees with balanced membership and responsible for approximately 34 standards. ASME was formed in 1880. A new B16 Technical Committee on P/T ratings was established to provide ratings needed for all ASME standards

– ASME B16.34 (2016), Valves• New addition published in 2016. Was moved to a four year cycle to not

conflict with the publication of the Pressure Vessel Code.• Scope extension of flanged and weld-end valve sizes from NPS 24 to NPS

60 to match B16.47 flanges• Paragraph 6.1.2 was balloted and approved for the next edition. Proposal

was to revise 6.1.2c and delete sub clause (1) and (2) which were revised in 2009. It caused some manufacturers of three piece ball valves to substantially increase the wall thickness of the center body resulting in additional weight of larger valves. Due to extensive discussions compromise was reached to offer both options

• A major review of needed material and P/T ratings corrections was conducted and will be included in the new edition.

• Code case to use increased ceiling pressures for materials with high creep strength, F91, F92, and C12A was approved.

– ASME B16.34 (cont.)• Use of ASTM Editions, other than those referenced in the B16 standard,

allowed with stated guidance and conformance. • B16 Code Case to add unlisted materials not currently in B16.34 was

approved by the Board. This is more of an approval procedure than a case and must be supplemented with actual material strength data and requires approval by B16 SC-N.

• ISO and MSS documents referenced for guidance for construction of cryogenic bonnet extensions

• The Subcommittee N continues to develop a similar standard for plastic valves. Progress is very slow

– B16.10 (2016), Face to Face, End to End

• New edition published in 2016. Major changes and additions include. • sizes extended to NPS 60. Adopted new Face-to-Face dimensions

including API 6D, AWWA and MSS SP-135, Knife Gate Valve dimensions.

• These changes and additions were the major revision to B16.10.

ASME

– ASME B16.5 (2016) and B16.47 (2016), Pipe Flanges

• New editions were published in 2016

• Publication has been moved to match B16.34 date.

• Added NPS 22 to complete the sizes range in B16.5

• P/T tables were reviewed to correct some discrepancies.

• In B16.47, a proposal to include bolt length data in the tables as published in B16.5 is being developed.

– B16.11 (2016), Forged Fittings

• New edition published in 2016

• Restricted production to not allow non-cylindrical fittings to be made directly from bar.

• Added coverage for “branch outlet fittings”, such as weldolet or nipolet, other than couplings

– 16.24 (2011), Cast Copper Alloy Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings

• New edition published in 2016

• Title changed to replace Fittings with “Valves”

• Scope incorporated to include C95200 and C95400 copper alloy valve construction data.

• P/T tables were developed

– ASME B 16.25 (2012), Buttwelding Ends

• Next edition to be published in 2017

• The addition of NPS ½ - 2 and NPS 50 – 60 in Table 1 and Table I-1 was approved .

• Clarify Figure 1. The dimension described at tnom in the figure is not shown correctly. Eliminated the symbol and clarified the requirements.

• A ballot was approved to revise Figure 1 to add B36.19 SS piping BW end geometries.

American Petroleum Institute’s main body is the Committee for

Refinery Equipment (CRE). Two working Subgroups are the Gate, Globe & Check Valves and the Quarter Turn Valves and Quality. API was established in 1919.

– API 594, Check Valves

• 8th edition has been approved and in process of being published 2016.• Revised Figure 1 concerning gasket interruption to align better with

design being manufactured currently on retainerless product.• Sizes are covered to NPS 48, however, they were extended to include

odd sizes such as NPS 26, NPS 28, NPS 32, NPS 34, NPS 38, 40 etc.• New table to list new Face to Face dimensions to provide double flange

valves in all sizes and pressure classes.

• Proposal to seal weld pipe plugs used as pin retainers on Type B valves was added.

Page 7: Crane ChemPharma & Energy · –Steel Flanges (TC 110) •SP-44, Steel flange standard was revised to comply with API and other organization reviews. Published 2016 •New SP for

– API 599, Metal Plug Valves

• 7th edition published in 2013

• Task Force formed and working to update to next edition

• Propose to Increase size rang from NPS 24 to NPS 36

• Incorporating Lift Plug valves into the scope

• Adding requirement to comply with API 641, Fugitive Emission testing

– API 600, Gate Valves

• 13th edition, January, 2015

• Extended size range to NPS 48 and included NPS 26, NPS 28, NPS 32, etc.

• Trim Table was revised to eliminate Trim #1 (410 SS) and Trim 2 (304 SS)

• Added requirement for valves used with stem in horizontal position.

• Required conformance to API 624 on fugitive emissions.

• gasket confinement in bonnet and packing chamber design was addressed.

API

– API 607, Fire Testing• 7th edition published in 2016.

• Current standard allows valve to be in the closed position prior to the test. An open position test was evaluated but not allowed.

• Material qualification remained in three groups, Ferritic, Austenitic and Duplex.

• Also the new edition allows the same through-seat and external leakage which is higher for the seat leak rate during burn of the 4th edition

– API 608, Metal Ball Valves• 5th edition published in 2012

• Task Force is working to update the next edition

• Section added to note double piston effect seats are outside the scope

• Add option for parallel threads for plugs

• Address direct mounting of actuators

• Revise to specify API-qualified packing must be used

Page 9: Crane ChemPharma & Energy · –Steel Flanges (TC 110) •SP-44, Steel flange standard was revised to comply with API and other organization reviews. Published 2016 •New SP for
