Local country gospel artist Ed King has been inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame, which was made official at the end of October.

Based in Branson, Missouri, the organiza-tion inducts an artist or group each year for the past 20 years.

King has previously been recognized for 2012 and 2013 International Male Entertainer of the Year, along with 2014 honours for International Full

Time Male Vocalist of the Year. King began his musical career in

the mid-1950s as a bass player in a group called Hank and the Hobo Band.

With three of those members, the group morphed into The Showbuds and toured all around the province.

The group shared stages with the likes of artist such as Bobby Bare, Stonewall Jack-

son, Tommy Collins, Faron Young, Bob Lumon, George Hamilton and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos.

Heyde said both he and Bueckert had worked with Symphony conduc-tor Jeff Faragher in the past.

“Evan’s done lots of work with the Symphony and conducted with them before,” he said. “And I’ve been play-ing with the Symphony for years. So we’ve sort of known each other pro-fessionally for a while and it just sort of seemed like a good opportunity.”

Heyde said it’s taken a lot of prepa-ration, but the two choirs didn’t meet for the first time until Thursday, at

which time they ironed out any of the inconsistencies for the performance.

“So far it’s been a lot of Evan and I teaching it to our own choirs and checking with Jeff to see what he wants, and that kind of stuff,” Heyde said. “With a little bit of luck it will all work out.”

The Christmas concert also in-cludes a Piano Concerto featuring the winner of the Student Concerto Pia-nist competition.

The concert is Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Key City Theatre.

Premier Christy Clark rejects Trudeau plan for Senate

Tom FleTCherBlack Press

Premier Christy Clark wasted no time rejecting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s plan to reform the Canadian Senate through an independent panel to appoint new senators.

“B.C. will not partici-pate in the process out-lined today to appoint senators,” Clark said in a statement released Thursday. “Our position has not changed; the Senate should be fixed or folded but we should not be distracted by it.”

Trudeau delivered this week on a promise to fill the 22 current Sen-ate vacancies via a five-member indepen-dent advisory board, starting with five ap-pointments in the new year. Three of the five panel members are to be chosen by Ottawa, with two temporary provin-cial or territorial mem-bers named for each ap-pointment.

“Today’s changes do not address what’s been wrong with the Senate since the beginning,” Clark said. “It has never been designed to repre-sent British Columbians or our interests at the na-

tional level.”B.C.’s objection is that

it has always been un-der-represented, com-pared to provinces that joined confederation earlier. Constitutional change would be re-quired to replace a re-gional formula where Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and the West have 24 seats each.

That translates to six seats each for B.C., Al-berta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, while Nova Scotia and New Bruns-wick have 10 each, de-spite relatively tiny pop-ulations. Currently, B.C. has one senator for each 775,000 people, the low-

est representation in Canada.

Senate reform was a key part of the recent federal election cam-paign, after a string of resignations, suspen-sions and prosecutions of senators including Liberal Mac Harb and Conservatives Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau. Harb and Duffy are fac-ing charges of fraud and breach of trust over al-leged misuse of expense allowances.

Trudeau expelled all Liberal senators from the party caucus before the election. The Conserva-tives hold a majority in

the Senate, which could allow them to hold up Liberal legislation.

B.C. currently has five senators, with former Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell and former Liberal Party vice-presi-dent Mobina Jaffer ap-pointed as Liberals. Con-servative appointments are Nancy Greene Raine, Yonah Martin and Rich-ard Neufeld, a former B.C. Liberal energy min-ister.

B.C. has had a vacan-cy since the retirement of former Conservative MP Gerry St. Germain, who reached the Sen-ate’s mandatory retire-ment age of 75 in 2012.

Mike’s Booknotes: The origin of the novel ‘Drugstore Cowboy’MIKE SELBY

1955’s ‘The Birdman of Alcatraz’ was the most famous and cer-tainly the most popular prison biography of the 20th century. It was the story of Robert Stroud who—while serving a life sentence in solitary c o n f i n e m e n t — r e -searched and published

a cutting-edge book on bird diseases. Stroud’s biography was written by Thomas E. Gaddis, who almost immediate-ly found an unintended backlash against him.

The problem was Gaddis portrayed Stroud as a kindly soul imprisoned by circum-stances beyond his con-

trol. In reality, Stroud was a vicious psycho-path who murdered one man execution style over ten dollars and later stabbed a prison guard to death over a cafeteria rule. (Gaddis’ depiction was flawed because Stroud was his only source; he never checked to see if what Stroud said about him-self was true or not).

Another unintended consequence for Gaddis was that inmates from all over the world began to send him their letters, requests, and outright demands for him to write a bestselling book about them; something he was in no way inter-ested in. Twenty years later, Gaddis (still re-ceiving requests from prisoners) found one inmate had mailed him an entire book he had written.

It was fascinating. The story was called

‘Satan’s Sandbox,’ writ-ten by James Fogle who was serving time in a Washington State pris-on. It was a powerful and brutal story about three very different pris-oners serving time in San Quentin.

‘Satan’s Sandbox’ had arrived at the right moment. Although

Gaddis wasn’t interest-ed in it, he had just been interviewed by Daniel Yost—a reporter from Portland’s ‘Oregonian’ newspaper. Gaddis sent the manuscript to Yost, urging him to read it.

“It was intoxicating and dizzying in the power of its story and the complexity and hu-manity of its characters,” Yost would later write. “I read it in one sitting.”

But it wasn’t perfect. Uneducated, Fogle’s work was full of basic grammatical errors and one or two glaring plot holes. Yost wrote to him, asking permission to edit his work and sub-mit it to publishers. Fogle agreed, and he began to send all kinds of writings to Yost, in-cluding other full length books as well as his life story. Yost edited and submitted it all to New York publishers, but no one was interested.

As the 70s turned into the 80s, Fogle sent Yost only one more work: a semi-autobi-ographical novel he called ‘Drugstore Cow-boy.’ When he received it, Yost was no longer a reporter, but was come-dic screenplays for vari-ous Portland-based film directors. This work had

brought him in contact with filmmaker Gus Van Sant, whom he showed ‘Drugstore Cowboy’ to. Van Sant was aston-ished by it, and pledged 500,000 dollars on the spot.

‘Drugstore Cowboy’ was released in theatres in the fall of 1989 to an unprecedented amount of praise. Winning awards from as far away as Berlin, it remains the only film to earn a 100% rating at Rotten Toma-

toes (a website which aggregates a film’s re-views over the years).

In somewhat of a re-verse way, it was only after the film was a criti-cal success that Fogle’s book was finally pub-lished.

But that was it for Fogle. Although he had written more novels, in-cluding ‘Doing It All,’ ‘House Of Worms,’ ‘Reckless Endearment,’ ‘Harse Apples,’ ‘Gold Gold Gold,’ ‘Needle In

The Sky,’ and ‘The Just And The Unjust,’ Yost was unable to get any-one to publish them. Even after the success of ‘Drugstore Cowboy.’

James Fogle died be-hind bars in 2012, at age 75. But before he passed away, he handed Yost one last book: ‘The Drugstore Cowboy Rides Again.’

Daniel Yost still hasn’t been able to get it published.

Isaac Baxter left his home in King’s Coun-ty, New Brunswick in 1903 to come west as a sawyer (one that saws) for the King

Lumber Company mill at Jim Smith Lake, near Cranbrook.

Within a short time he brought his wife Idella Maud and daughter Muriel Lillian out to join him. By 1911, Isaac had taken up res-idence in a two-storey, nine room house on Norbury Avenue with his family (eventually four daughters and a son) and three lodgers.

He was a popular, hard-working, civ-ic-minded man and by 1907 had gone into both the livery business and operation of a portable sawmill under the banner of Baxter & Langin.

The family moved to a new home on Garden Ave-nue (#132 – 12th Ave. S.) by 1923, and it was here both he and his wife resided until their deaths, Isaac in 1935 and Idella Maud in July, 1973, ages 77 and 95, respec-tively.

His daughters Muriel, Vera, Della, Edna, and son Hedley were independent youths, none more so than Muriel, born October 13, 1902, in Saint John, N.B.

Unlike many young ladies of the day, Muriel studied at an institute of higher learning in Victoria following graduation from Cranbrook High School and by 1921 she was back in the East Kootenay as a member of the Wycliffe School teaching staff.

Teaching was not an uncommon occu-pation for young ladies of the day although many left the profession at a young age as school boards rarely hired married women. Muriel paid her dues, so to speak, working for significantly less money than her male counterparts and, by 1922, held a teaching post at Cranbrook’s Central School.

She gradually rose to the position of vice principal (under Miss Amy Woodland and later Mr. C.T. Rendle) and by 1950 was the principal of the school. Miss Baxter was a scrupulous, if not stern educator and the stories are legion of her strict methods and punishments for those who were foolish enough to test her mettle.

She served on many civic committees and often spent her summers traveling throughout North America. In 1956, she was appointed to the newly created Department of Education post of Teacher Consultant for both the Cranbrook and Fernie districts.

Two years later she became Supervisor of Elementary Schools, a position she main-tained until her retirement in 1963.

Following her retirement she continued to live with her mother at the family home until her final years when she moved to the present day Dr. Green Memorial Home.

During the late 1950s and into the 1960s, a period of ever-expanding school popula-tion in Cranbrook, the school trustees named schools after notable residents: (Miss) Amy Woodland, Laurie (family) Ju-nior-Elementary and, in 1967, Muriel Baxter Elementary School.

The need for a new ele-mentary school was noted as early as 1963, when the school board began the process of purchasing land for such a purpose. By 1967, the need was crit-ical with speed of the es-sence. An overcrowded Mount Baker Senior Sec-

ondary required Laure Junior Elementary to be upgraded to Laurie Junior – Secondary and a new school be constructed as soon as possible to relieve the elementary students who were on morning-afternoon shifts at Tenth Avenue Elementary.

All things considered, it was not surpris-ing that the school board hit upon the solu-tion of a pre-fabricated building to be erect-ed on the corner of 20th Avenue and 3rd Street, S.

Although pre-fabricated construction was by no means a new concept, the build-ing of an “instant school” attracted attention across the province, especially in the many districts where educational overcrowding was an issue. It was cheap and it was fast which was exactly what was required.

Cranbrook, itself, was going through many changes: boundary expansions, a pro-posed mall on (or rather, across) Baker Street, a new regional airport, a new hospi-tal, a new waterworks, the list was expansive and expensive and the idea of cheap educa-tion went over well.

Miss Muriel Baxter, in the company of school superintendent Percy Pullinger and other assorted dignitaries, undertook the sod-turning at the site in mid-September, 1967, with Tecton Structures of Vancouver proposing to have the building completed by October 31.

The big semi-trailers rolled into town at 8 a.m. on October 6, and by noon the building

was well underway. The structure consisted of a series of 10’ x 28’ modules linked togeth-er and placed upon a cement foundation to form an “L” shaped building.

When completed the building looked like a series of 10’ x 28 modules linked to-gether and placed upon a cement founda-tion to form an “L” shaped building. It was standard 1960s architecture and left much to be desired but instantly relieved the over-crowding in the Cranbrook school system, at least temporarily.

The school was officially opened on No-vember 22, 1967, with remarks from Muriel Baxter; Mayor George Haddad; the Honour-able L.R. Peterson, Minister of Education and principal Rod Joyce, among others.

Muriel Baxter Elementary School served its original purpose until 2002 at which time it closed due to declining enrolment. The building remained in community use until 2008, when the trustees of School District 5 (although not by unanimous consent) or-dered it demolished.

It was destroyed by fire during the demo-lition process in December, 2008. The land has since sat vacant although there is a re-cent push to secure the property as an off-leash dog park, a concept long earmarked for the former Moir Hill Park which the city has been steadily disassembling for its grav-el for many years.

Undoubtedly city council has thought that through and has a new concept in place for the Moir Park site. Miss Muriel Baxter died in on August 28, 1980, age 77, and is buried in the Old General Cemetery along-side her father and mother.

Letters to the editorClimate Change

On Dec. 3, thousands have gathered in Paris to consum-mate the World’s Greatest Hoax – “Climate Change”. For those who have not figured it out, climate change on Earth has been going on for the past 3.7 billion years and is not about to change because of this gigan-tic, carbon spewing party in Paris. We base the climate change premise on a few things. One, it is warmer now than when we were kids. Two, the remnants of the huge ice sheets, now called glaciers, are receding, a few metres a year. Third, we are are getting ex-tremes in weather. All of this is

based on observations from the past 150 odd years. The one thing it is not based upon is scientific facts. Because if it were ,the story would be told that the last “Glacial Maximus” occurred 17,000 years ago and the ice sheets melted from it’s toe in Northern Oregon all the way to the top of Alaska, a dis-tance of some 5,000 km’s. This Ice Age ended 12,000 years ago. This means that for 5000 years this huge ice sheet, 3 to 4 km’s thick melted an average of one KM per year. This clearly indi-cates the temperatures during this great ice melt must have been one hellava lot warmer than today.

There are four groups that

benefit from this great hoax. First is the environmental movement that beg for dona-tions to fight the 3.7 Billion year old climate change. The sec-ond is the scientific communi-ty that pleads for research funds from government (the tax payer), business and indus-try to pay for their research. The third is the Johnny come lately, our Government, and their well thought out carbon tax which will do nothing more than cost the lowly taxpayer an increase in taxes.

Carbon emissions will not change and their rate of in-crease will continue to rise. Lastly the UN will get billions upon billions ever year from

world governments to play their power games with.

Weather extremes are easy to explain, we have no written, nor anecdotal records of past large weather events so we do not know how dramatic past events were 500 and more years ago.

My confidence is without a job killing carbon tax and with-out the cry wolf fossil fools, healthy humans will continue to walk the earth.

Water is the overlooked re-source that is being used as our sewer and this needs to be a greater priority than carbon taxes.

As I wrote last week, the season of Ad-vent has begun. A new year dawns in the life of the church, and in the life of

the world. The word Advent comes from the Latin word “adventus,” which means “com-ing” or “arrival.” It is a season of hope and anticipation. It involves waiting, as I wrote about last week.

The anticipation of Advent is that we seek God’s presence in the world. God comes again and again in so many differ-ent and often ordinary ways. The church seeks God’s presence because we trust deeply that God comes to make the world new and whole again.

Some Christians believe that when we talk about the coming of Jesus, it means what they call “the second coming of Christ.” I’ve writ-ten before in these columns that I’m not sure that there will be a literal “second coming” of Christ. More accurately, I’m agnostic about that in the sense that I don’t know (which is what “agnostic” means) whether it will happen or not.

Those who believe differently than me have been infuriated by that, and I’ve re-ceived some angry letters.

Those who do believe in a literal return picture it in violent terms. They picture God coming back to earth to wipe out all the sinners and destroy the earth while lifting all the believers to heaven where they won’t have to undergo the violent destruction. This is the picture which

books such as the “Left Behind” series paint. I believe that to be a serious mis-reading of Scripture. That kind of under-standing has more in common with Ar-nold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator than with the gospel of Christ.

Rather, I believe that Christ comes to us again and again, in acts of wholeness and grace and compassion. Whenever we feed those who are hungry, give shelter to those who are homeless, clothe those who shiver in the cold, visit those who are lonely, comfort those who are anxious, or reach out to refugees and welcome the stranger,

Christ is present. God comes to us again and again in the “least of these our brothers and sisters”.

I think that this is the coming of Christ we long for during Advent. Jesus comes … again and again. We par-

ticipate in Jesus’ advent by looking for all those place s and times in which God is present. We seek to recognize God in all these different disguises.

This points to another part of what Ad-vent means for us. Advent is part of a cycle of time which includes Christmas and Epiphany (“revealing”). This cycle is called “Incarnation”, which comes from two Latin words meaning “in flesh”.

In other words, as believers in incarna-tion, Christians are called to work in part-nership with God for the healing of the world, not its destruction.

In Jesus, God hits the streets, so to

speak. In Jesus, we see God’s passionate love with skin on. God invites us to live in the world with the least of our brothers and sisters in whom we see Jesus. God calls us to join God on the streets, to be God’s love with skin on.

As we do so, not only do we embody God’s love for the world. We also are agents of Jesus coming again and again into our world with a word of compassion, grace and hope. Through us, God continues to be present in the world. Through us, God hits the streets. Through us, God’s love is made known in the world.

That’s the heart of the message of Ad-vent. We look for God who comes to us again and again. We seek to be open to the presence of God in our lives, and in our world. We seek opportunities to work in partnership with the God of life. We seek God’s justice in all our actions, that justice in which all people share equitably in the wealth of the world.

One of the best comments I’ve read about Jesus’ coming was penned by John Dominic Crossan in his book God and Empire: “The Second Coming of Christ is not an event that we should expect to hap-pen soon, violently, or literally. The Sec-ond Coming of Christ is what will happen when we Christians finally accept that the First Coming was the Only Coming and start to cooperate with its divine presence.”

That’s the heart of Advent.

Life on the road is never easy for a junior hockey player and no one in the Kootenay Ice dressing room expected a season-long, five-game road trip through the B.C. Division was going to be quite as sweet as a coastal breeze.

“With it being our first really long road trip of the year, a lot of the young guys haven’t ex-perienced this before,” said sophomore winger Austin Wellsby, prior to leaving Cranbrook earli-er this week. “We’re just going to have to do our best to show them how it goes and hopefully we can play well on the road.”

To this point, the Ice have been handed back-to-back losses in the Okanagan/Interior re-gion, falling to the Kam-loops Blazers 5-1 Tues-day before dropping a 4-1 decision to the WHL-leading Kelowna Rockets Wednesday.

With the Pacific Ocean in sight, the Ice (6-21-2-0) hope to begin salvaging this sea-son-long trek west when they visit the Vancouver Giants (7-16-2-2) Friday at Pacific Coliseum.

“Really at this point we need [a win],” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “You’ve got to imagine Vancouver is thinking the exact same thing. They’re looking at us coming in and they’re going to be fired up

ready to go because they feel it’s a must-win game.”

While the pressure is beginning to weigh heavily on a Kootenay Ice club falling further and further behind in the WHL standings, there might be a little added pressure on Well-sby Friday night.

A native of Chilli-wack, B.C., Friday’s out-ing will mark the first opportunity for the 6-foot-3, 184-pound for-ward to suit up in front of friends and family since he joined the Ice last season.

“It’s definitely really exciting,” Wellsby said in anticipation of Friday’s outing. “I haven’t really played in front of a lot of family and friends. They’ve haven’t really seen me play in a while, so it will be exciting to make my first trip to [the Lower Mainland] and see all them.

“It’s pretty awesome to have their support behind me.”

The 18-year-old got off to a quick start this season, tallying two goals and six points through his team’s first 17 games. The month of November was a bit chillier for the former fourth-round bantam draft pick (76th overall, 2012) as he managed only one goal.

Perhaps a trip home will light a fire under Wellsby, who has seen an increased role this season under coach Pierce.

As a rookie, Wellsby

skated in 35 games, tal-lying one goal, under then head coach Ryan McGill, and didn’t see a ton of ice time when he was in the lineup.

This season has been different, as Wellsby found himself lining up on the top line with cap-tain Luke Philp early in the proceedings.

Wellsby has already

skated in 29 games this season, setting new ca-reer marks in all major statistical categories with three goals, four as-sists and seven points.

With that being said, the second-year for-ward hasn’t scored since Nov. 7 at Leth-bridge and with his team starving for of-fense, there’s no better time than a hometown show for Wellsby to find the back of the net once again.

On the flip side of the puck, the Giants enter Friday’s match winners of two consecutive games, including Wednesday’s 6-0 shut-out of another Central Division club -- the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The success for the Giants is recent as Van-couver sits in last place in both the B.C. Division and the Western Con-ference.

With that in mind,

Friday might be provide the best opportunity for the Ice to get back into the win column and snap a five-game losing streak.

“I just want to see our work and our consisten-cy and our desire be bet-ter,” Pierce said. “I think wins will come from that, but you’ve got to start small.

“It’s always a chal-

lenge just to try and get better. That’s the only thing you can look for-ward to. I don’t know if we can get much worse than [Wednesday’s 4-1 loss in Kelowna]. That was real tough to take.

“Getting better isn’t an easy thing. It takes a ton of work and a ton of effort. You should look forward to the opportu-nity to work your butt off

to become a better hockey player. It’s the greatest challenge there is, but it’s a fun one.”

Puck drop between the Ice and Giants is slated for 8:30 p.m. (Mountain).

From there, the Ice jump a boat and head for Vancouver Island where they will battle the Victoria Royals (18-8-1-1) Saturday evening.

“With it being our first really long road trip of the year, a lot

of the young guys haven’t experienced

this before. We’re just going to have to do our best to show them how it goes.”Austin WellsbyKootenay Ice

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Marcus Foligno remem-bers the 2011 world ju-nior championships fondly, despite Canada’s loss to Russia in the gold-medal game.

The tourney was held in Buffalo, which made it something of a showcase for him as a Sabres draft pick. But it didn’t hurt that the arena was full of Canadian fans.

“It was a lot of red jerseys,” Foligno said. “We knew it was in Buf-falo and it was on Amer-

ican soil, but being part of Team Canada, we had a lot of Canadian fans and they showed their support big time.”

Canadian fans will get that chance again in 2018 when the world ju-niors return to Buffalo. USA Hockey will make that announcement Fri-day at Ralph Wilson Sta-dium, home of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo beat out Pittsburgh and St. Louis for the right to host in 2018, a testament to the city’s strength as a hock-ey market.

Dear Annie: I am a 33-year-old married man. My wife and I both have children from previous marriages. My daughter sees us every other weekend, but my wife’s 10-year-old daughter lives with us. I have been supporting her since she was 3, and I love her like she was my own. My wife’s ex has no interest in seeing her. My wife has a brother who is my age. He’s never been married or had kids. Recently, while my wife was out of town, her brother and I had a falling out. He was angry with our 10-year-old for not listening to him, and told her off in a manner I found crude and disrespectful. At first, I didn’t say anything, because my mother-in-law was present and she told him to cut it out. But he didn’t listen to her and continued belittling and embarrassing the girl. I told him that if he wanted others to respect what he says, he needs to show respect himself. I also said that he was being immature and making mountains out of molehills. We argued for 20 minutes, and as he walked out the door, he told me that I wasn’t her real father and that my wife had given him permission to discipline her whenever she didn’t listen to him. I have yet to speak to my wife to see if this is true. I will be the first to admit that when it comes to discipline, I am easygoing. But does an aunt or uncle have any authority to discipline nieces and nephews? And does my not being her father give my brother-in-law precedence over me? I know my brother-in-law loves his niece, but I can’t stand the way he treats her. And I’m tired of having the fact that I’m not her biological father thrown in my face all the time. What do I do? -- Confused Dad Dear Dad: First, talk to your wife and clear this up. An uncle has no authority to discipline unless he has the parents’ permission, and this immature brother-in-law should not have such permission. And an uncle would never take precedence over a stepparent unless the stepparent was abusive or neglectful, and some other relative had to step in. That doesn’t sound like the case here. The fact that your mother-in-law also found his behavior objectionable makes him sound like a bully. You and your wife should go over these issues and make sure you support one another. Dear Annie: I saw the letter from “Didn’t Like It, Either,” about children who don’t want to hug or kiss relatives. Years ago, when my granddaughter was younger, she was embarrassed by my hugs and kisses when I dropped her at school. So we started doing “Pinky Hugs and Thumb Kisses.” We hooked our pinky fingers together (hugs) and then pressed our thumbs together (kisses). It worked fine. She is all grown up now, and we still laugh and do it when we say goodbye. Just thought you might want to pass it on. -- J. Dear J.: This is adorable. And it can help those children who love their relatives and want to show affection, but find physical contact too difficult or awkward.
