DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: Assembly Room 10 Mrs Moores Year 3 pirates did a wonderful job teaching the school community about our PBS expected behaviours. The Room 10 students began the assembly demonstrating great respect, with their heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country. It was lovely to see so many parents and families in attendance, supporting our talented students. Congratulations to all students who received an award at the assembly. PBS Workshop - Expression of Interest An underpinning imperative of our Positive Behaviour Support Program is that all staff, students and parents understand the theory behand the approach, and the processes, that we follow at Craigie Heights Primary School. I have mentioned before that the policy is available on the schools website and we are happy to make hard copies available for families on request. We are very confident, because of data that we gather regularly, that the students have a strong understanding of what is expected of them and are engaged to a very high level in choosing to do the right thing. Over 4000 Harmony Awards were counted in the barrel at the last assembly. One part of our PBS implementation plan is to hold Parent/Carer Workshops to build your knowledge about what is expected at school and how we go about achieving those expectations. We propose to hold an informative and interactive workshop for interested parents to explain the emphasis on encouraging positive behaviour, what processes we follow for students who choose negative behaviours and the basics of Win/Win Discipline. Could you email your expression of interest, with a suggestion of suitable evenings for you, to the email address below please. We will try to find the best time for everyone. PATHS Curriculum

Many parents ask me about the PATHS program. PATHS stands for Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies. It is a social and emotional curriculum that we teach from Kindergarten through to Year 6.

Independent Research shows that PATHS… Reduces aggressive behaviour Significantly decreases conduct problems Increases students’ self-control, self-management and interpersonal skills Increases students’ emotional vocabulary Increases students’ ability to tolerate frustration Increases use of conflict resolution strategies Improves student’s critical thinking skills Reduces depression Improves academic achievement

Five Main Areas covered in the Curriculum are: 1. Self-Control 2. Emotional Understanding 3. Building Self-Esteem 4. Peer Relationships 5. Problem - Solving Skills Strategies The two strategies below allow use to be ‘emotionally intelligent’. Even adults can benefit from these approaches. At a time when emotions can be high, we need to first be aware of our emotions, then step back and take control of them before we take action. DO TURTLE CONTROL SIGNALS

NAPLAN The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted from Tuesday 14th May to Friday 24 May 2019. Students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessments provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the test. NAPLAN is just one aspect of the assessment and reporting process. It is important to reassure your child that NAPLAN is just one assessment, and to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure that they are familiar with the types of questions they may get, and how to navigate their way through the online testing. All students are expected to participate. Those with a disability may qualify for adjustments. A NAPLAN report will be issued to each student later in the year. If you would like to know more, you can speak to your teacher, or to the school Leadership Team or visit nap.edu.au Mrs Amanda Robinson – Deputy Principal

He seeks help when needed and enjoys celebrating his successes. Well done Fletcher!

Parent parking is available in the car park in front of the Early Childhood Area. This area is not a ‘Kiss and Drop’ area. Provision has been made for two disabled parking bays in this car park. Please do not park in these bays as we have families requiring these spaces. Never use the staff car park. "Kiss and Drop" - If you wish to use the ‘Kiss and Drop’ area, there is a zone specifically for this purpose on Spinaway Street. Please do not park or leave your vehicle in this area. Additional parent parking is kindly offered at the Craigie Baptist Church car park beside the school, which is a short walk to the school. We are so lucky to have this additional parking so please respect everything on their site. The school oval will also be opened for parking for assemblies and school events. Parking on the verges around the school is extremely dangerous and puts our students at risk. Unfortunately a number of parents continue to park on our neighbours verges or drive-ways and this has been reported to the Joondalup Council for their action.
