MARILYN CRANDALL from Camano Island Washington As a plein-air watercolorist, Marilyn Crandall‘s free and loose strokes uniquely capture landscape images and country scenes with an em-phasis on strong patterns of light and dark. This artist grew up in several western states as her engineer dad worked on the large hydroelectric dam projects from Arizona to Or-egon, California to Washington, Utah to Montana. She graduated with honors from Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City where she majored in Environmental Design. Prior to that she attended the University of Washington, College of Architecture, where she was introduced to watercoloring as a way to render her designs. Her profession has been as a registered architect; her pas-sion is watercolor. She feels privileged to have taken workshops with Eric Weigardt, Tony Van Hasselt, Kathy Collins, and Diane Hill, among others. All have been mentors. She has painted abroad in Guatemala, China, Korea and Mexico as well as in the USA in Maine, Virginia, Georgia, Washington DC and now can paint the amazing coastal scenes and rural landscapes of Washington State, particularly the amazing Salish Sea area.

SAINT PATRICK OF IRELAND ORTHODOX CHURCHA Bible-believing, Christ-centered canonical Orthodox parish at the PUD Building, 9124 271st St NW, Stanwood. We worship in English using traditional Western Rite services. Who / What Are We? Our Church has been in existence since A.D. 33 when Our Lord Jesus founded it upon His Apostles. For a thousand years the Church was simply known as the Church! However, in 1054, due to increasing linguistic, political, and theological issues, the Church was sadly rended. The Eastern part became known as the Orthodox Catholic Church and the Western part as the Roman Catholic Church. Our Western Rite represents the worship of the original Western Church while safeguarding the theology of the original Eastern Church. We worship our Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) in tradi-tional English. If you are amongst the thousands who are either unchurched or dechurched, please consider joining us in learning Biblical doctrine, as we provide a place of fellowship for believers and enquirers, observe the Lord’s Supper, and pray. In other words, we do what the early Christians did as described in Acts 2:42... “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Please join us! All are wel-come. Saturday Vespers at 6:15pm. Sunday Matins at 9am. Sunday Mass at 9:45am. We collect food for the Stanwood-Camano Food Bank every week! God bless you. SIX WORD STORIES
Hearing, howling, screaming! Then eerie silence.Blinding snow. Loud rumbling. Fading footprints.Glowing eyes, stalking prey, awaiting nightfall.Mysterious fog. Flashlights. “Do you see it?”
– By Mariah Phillips
WATCHING NATURE
Last night I looked out my kitchen window and saw a pileated wood-pecker sitting on the bird bath for the longest time. He is too big to light on the suet blocks. They are huge and larger than woodpeck-ers. The little squirrels grab the sunflower heads and scamper up the big trees in my backyard to eat them!

WINTER IS COMINGThat means warm coats and sometimes hats, scarves and gloves. Again this year three local groups will be working together to bring new and gently used warm coats for children of families enrolled at the Food Bank. The program is for people living in the Camano Is-land and Stanwood zip codes. . The coats will be available for infants or 18-year-olds who are still in high school and any age in between. Distribution will start on October 18 and will run on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10-1:00 until Friday, Dec. 20. Distribution will be closed the week of Thanksgiving (Nov. 22 and 24). Families must register first with the Food Bank and receive a voucher for coats for each child in the family. Then families take the vouchers with them to the Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center at 9612 271st Street across from the library. This program has brought together the Food Bank, the Stanwood Camano Rotary and the Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center. The Rotary raises the funds for the program (generously supplemented by private donations), the Food Bank distributes the coats, and the Resource Center will house the program. The program has been in existence for 16 years, with the Rotary support starting the second year of operation. In the past, families have returned the coats when their children outgrew them, and some coat recipients have chosen to volunteer in the distribution. Truly this program strengthens our community and shows how community groups can work together for the benefit of all of us.
GREAT WASHINGTON SHAKEOUTWe have more than 1 million people across the state, who have pledged to drop, cover & hold on at 10:19 a.m. on Oct. 19. Kids are doing this in their school. Others at work, or even their car. Millions more across the country are participating, too. It’s free to join! Reg-istration isn’t required, but helps us tally how many people are par-ticipating: http://shakeout.org/washington. Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes– wherever you live, work, or travel. After you drop, cover and hold on -- do one more thing. Check your emergency kit. Talk to your family about out-of-area contacts in case of future emergencies. Get two weeks ready in case we get a big earthquake. Want to know what to do during an earth-quake in various situations? Download a higher resolution version of the graphic attached to this post here: https://www.mil.wa.gov/uploads/pdf/emergency-management/drop-cover-hold-final.pdf.

WHAT’s
UP?
Astronomy in the night sky over
Camano byWilliam Maxwell
What you can see when you look up into
the skies above Camano Island and Stanwood.
The Double Star Cluster in the constellation Perseus sits high in the northeastern sky during fall nights slowly moving westward as the night, and season, progresses. The Double Cluster, also known as the“jewels of the night sky”, is perhaps the most spectacular pairing of clusters into a single field of view.
Star clusters are born from a common parent hydrogen cloud and often remain gravitationally bound long after their formations. Once stars are born, the blow away their cocoon and clearly shine with other newly formed stars. To find this pairing, look for the easy to spot W shape of the constellation Cassiopeia. Directly below the leftmost arm of the W, about equal distance as the length of that arm, sit the two clusters.
What will you see? Under dark skies, the clusters appear as a smudge to the naked eye, but with binoculars the pair will resolve into their individual stars. It will jump out at you once you spot it as stands out well against the starry background. In even a small telescope the view will appear quite dazzling.
Our sun, now about 4.6 billion years old, was once in such a group, but our siblings have long since scattered throughout the galaxy along with the cloud which formed it. We haven’t completely lost that hydrogen cloud, though. It fuels the sun and can be found in every glass of water you drink. In fact, our bodies contain more hy-drogen than any other element, each one of those atoms sometime in the distant past floating in interstellar space.
Next month the great Orion Nebula rises into view, perhaps the most famous and easily observable star forming regions, where the slow dance of collapsing clouds ignite into the newest star members of our galaxy. In the Spring and summer, the remnants of dying stars come into view. The Perseus Clusters represent youthful adolescents at the young age, astronomically speaking, of about 12 million years.

“DEATH WAS NO STRANGER”
Harold McCann did not grow up in Stanwood. However, he was born there on August 28, 1920 while his father John worked as a laborer for the Carnation Milk condensery in East Stanwood. John McCann was from Everett by way of Michigan as a boy where John’s father ran a boarding house. John married Sigrid Helland in July 1919 and they lived with Sigrid’s widowed mother Bolleta who ran a small dairy operation along the Stillaguamish River. By 1930 the McCann family was back in Everett where John and Sig-rid ran a grocery. Harold graduated from Everett High School and joined the Army in March 1940 but quickly is shown as a patient at the Fort Mc-Dowell Military Base in Sausalito, California. Initially assigned to a coastal artillery unit, he later became part of the Philippine De-partment’s Headquarters Company—an assignment that would become a nightmare. With the invasion of the Philippines in De-cember 1941, Harold and thousands of other troops fought des-perately against a ruthless enemy. Bataan fell April 9, 1942 and the island fortress of Corregidor May 2, 1942, the same day Harold was reported as severely injured. Roughly 11,000 captured Allied troops, many wounded, were force-marched to Manila’s Old Bilibad Prison where food and wa-ter were scarce or nonexistent. They were then moved to Camp Cabanatuan in May, where American dead in the camp were left to decay in the intense heat as exhausted prisoners lacked the strength to bury their own. An estimated 30 Americans died each day at Cabanatuan. In October of 1942 about 1,000 prisoners were put on cramped freighters and shipped to the Davao Prison Colony on Mindinao Island. It is likely that Harold McCann was in this group since lat-er reports cite Davao as the place of his death. His parents were notified in January 1943 that he was a prisoner of war. The War Department officially reported Private McCann dead on July 9, 1943—one of thousands of prisoners who succumbed to condi-tions in the death camps. Accounts by survivors point to the abject cruelty of the Japa-nese captors forcing them at bayonet point on a 17-hour march from the dock to the Davao Prison. Many never finished the march. They were told that their easy life was over. At Davao, they were forced to labor in the fields and logging mills under treacherous conditions. Medicines were virtually non-existent and prisoners deteriorated rapidly perishing by a variety of diseases including beriberi, malaria and dysentery as well as general malnutrition or abuse. The only large-scale escape from a Japanese prisoner camp in World War II, was from Davao on April 4, 1943 and then only by three men. Smuggled to American authorities by Filipino guerillas, these prisoners were the first to report the inhuman conditions—the “heart-breaking truth,”—of the horror inside the camps. Of over 36,000 American military personal taken as prisoners in the Pacific Theater, over 13,000 died as POWs. Navy Command-er Melvyn McCoy later wrote that “the hardships we had faced in battle were, if anything, much less severe than those awaiting us as military prisoners…Death was no stranger to any of us who had gone through the Battle of the Philippines.”

asks, “Did You Know?”
Excerpts taken from the
“Stanwood Story”, written
for theStanwood News
by Alice Essex.
The spadework of the town council in the first years after incorpo-ration set the pattern and stage for years that followed. The work of the first city fathers as deemed highly commendable according to local newspaper reports and other historical data. The first minute Book of the Stanwood Council begins as follows: “Minutes of the first meeting of the Stanwood councilmen held Oc-tober 12, 1903. His Honor, the Mayor, called the first meeting of the council to order at 8 o’clock. The Mayor then proceeded to deliver his first message to the council.” His Honor, the Mayor, incidental-ly was D. O. Pearson. After his founding address he immediately made is first appointments, namely Carl Ryan, clerk; J. M. Bennett, marshal; Dr. Donald McEachern, magistrate and George Mitchell, attorney. The first motion before the council was for acceptance of these appointments and was made by Ira Galloupe and seconded by Dr. O. R. Allen. Bonds for city officials were then set at $1,500 for treasurer, $500 for clerk and marshal. At a later meeting the clerk’s salary was set at $50 a year, with extra for assessment work; the marshal’s stipend was placed at $60 a month and later reduced to $50; the attorney’s salary was set at $200 a year. Attorney Mitchell, however, offered to donate his services for a time. First committees appointed were finance; streets and sidewalks; drains, dikes, and ditches; lights and water. Meeting dates were made the first and third Mondays of each month. Thompson’s Hall was the designated meeting place. Ordinance NO. 1, first to go on record, prescribed the duties and bonds of town officers. It was passed November 2, 1903. License and other fees voted at that session were female dog tax $2; merry-go-round license, $5 a day; liquor sale license, $400 a year; pool and billard table License, $5 year; street concerts, $5 day; shooting galleries, $3 day; pay for the election board $3 a day. Five ne planked street crossings and three street lamps were au-thorized, and Mayor Pearson recommended that property owners be notified to build sidewalks in front of their places, and if they failed to do so, the town would tear out their present defective walks. By March 1904, two lots were bought and a jail was planned. The pole ordinance was passed, also another restricting saloons to cer-tain districts (not described in the minutes). Still another ordinance relating to defective stove pipes, fire traps and moss on roofs went on the books. Several street improvement districts were formed and sidewalks were authorized for Broadway Street (north side). The Grant Medi-cine Company was given permission to show in the streets for four days at a fee of $10, and a motion was passed instructing the town marshal to buy a gun and use his own judgment in the matter. October 10, 1904—A year, less two days, after the first council meeting the city fathers passed the ordinance for levying taxes, and John Hall was instructed to get someone to lay the balance of the sewer pipe, provided the cost was not more than $17. October 24, 1904 Resolution approved setting November 8, 1904 in the Town of Stanwood as election day for voting on presidential electors, state, judicial and county offices and election of a Justice of Peace and Constable for Stanwood. At the same meeting another resolution estimated the expense of the town for the ensuing year.

MY WONDERFUL TRIP TO THE DENTIST
12:15pm: Sitting in the lobby of the dentist office, reading an is-sue of Lady’s Home Journal from May 2007,– anything to distract my brain from the fact that shortly I’m going to be in serious emotional distress, contemplating the dentist’s drill boring through my mouth like a construction worker chiseling a concrete sidewalk. I need a new crown. 12:21: Uh oh. It’s time. They just called me in. The hygienist’s name is Maria. She seems nice. Kind of cute, actually. But I know what’s in store. Soon the dentist will start wielding his evil-looking torture de-vice, and I’ll be clutching the armrests so tightly I’ll leave permanent indentations. 12:25: Time for the Novocain. Did I mention I have a phobic fear of needles? The dentist’s needle appears roughly the length of a knit-ting needle. Is it only me or did he just flash a sinister sneer behind his mask? I’ll bet he loves this part. My stomach is a ball of knots. My heart is racing. 12:26: Maria sees me grimacing. She asks me if I would like some nitrous oxide (laughing gas). “What’s does it do?” I ask. She explains it may help me relax and take my mind off of the procedure. “Sure, why not?” I tell her. Maria puts a mask on my face and tells me to breathe in and out through my nose. Nice try, but there’s no way this is going to help me relax. 12:36: Looks like the dentist is about to drill the back of my mouth. Whatever. I wonder why I was so nervous. It’s just a drill And the worst thing his drill might do is slice through my tongue and jaw. Big deal. 12:39: I’m suddenly feeling very light-headed. I’ve never felt like this before. Look at my hands – wow – they’re so huge! And hey, I even have opposable thumbs! Cool! 12:43: I love kittens. I think we could solve all the world’s problems if everyone had one. There would be no wars either. I need to tell the President about my idea – Kittens for world peace. 12:46: I hear a buzzing, whirring sound. I wonder what it is. There’s this man. He’s poking something in my face. Who is he? He’s wearing a mask. Maybe he’s the Lone Ranger. Oh, right, this is probably my dentist. And he’s with a lady. She’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen! I like sailboats. 12:52: That man with the mask is wearing a bright white costume. Maybe he’s God. God sure wears funny glasses. Is this Heaven? I won-der if they’ll give me my own angel wings. I hope they have them in size large. 12:58: Yes, I definitely think I’m in love. If I asked the beautiful lady to marry me, would she think it’s too sudden? I barely know her. Maybe I should buy her a monkey first. I bet she’d like that. You can never go wrong with monkeys. 1:05: I wonder if hippos bounce. 1:18: The happy feeling is starting to fade. I’m thinking the part where I won the Olympic gold medal in Hugging may have just been a hallucination. That’s disappointing. The dentist says that the crown procedure is over. He’s asking me to rinse my mouth. 1:24: Maria tells me I was a great patient. She gives me a new tooth-brush. I really don’t remember much of what happened over the past hour. But I know one thing for sure: I LOVE GOING TO THE DENTIST. Now that I think about it, my back upper right molar looks to be in need of a crown, too. I wonder if I they can fit me in again next week.
