From the Potentate’s Desk by 2020 Potentate I.S. Carl Thompson

Albert Einstein once said, “I think the most important question facing humanity is, is the universe a friendly place?” This is really something to think about. On all our many walks through life, we may find that we meet so many people with unique thoughts, ideas, opinions and life experiences. All these things combined often determine how a person feels or acts or even treats other people.

So, who do you want to be?

It’s a simple question, and whether you know it or not, you’re answering it every day through your actions. This one question will define you more than any other, because how you show up

and treat people means everything. Either you lift people up by respecting them, making them feel valued, appreciated and heard, or you hold people down by making them feel small, insulted, disregarded or excluded.

Who you choose to be means everything. We’ll get people to give more and function at their best if we’re all kind to each other. Incivility chips away at people and their performance. It robs people of their potential, even if they’re just working around it. When we have a friendly more civil environment, we’re more productive, creative, helpful, happy and healthy.

We can do better than we have. Each one of us can be more mindful and can take actions to lift others up around us, at the shrine, a club or unit meeting, at work, at home, online, in schools, and in our communities. It is my hope and wish that this year is a renewal to our core beliefs and commitment to the fun of our fraternity. We were founded on FUN. The A.A.O.N.M.S. existed for 50 years before we had our crown jewels our hospitals for Children. We had men joining our ranks in droves. Why were they joining? It wasn’t because of our hospital system 100 years ago. It was the simple fact that at our core, our foundation is and always has been that we are all Freemasons first, all they wanted to have a little FUN! So, let’s get back to that.

Remember to get your tickets to the Potentates Salute right away. It is going to sell out! More importantly get your new candidate’s petitions in for the spring ceremonial April 11th!

And remember, we don’t have to agree on anything to be kind to one another.

Yours in Faith

Chaplain’s Report by Noble Steven Levin

March finds me hoping for good news from the Nobility. Since having stepped into this most auspicious position, I have sadly been contacting a number of friends and families who have had visits from the “Black Camel” and notification to our Temple has been slow. I am hoping the phone contacts offering our most sincere condolences also provide a degree of warmth and solace that a card alone can’t do. May the Great Architect Of The Universe keep us safe from the medical problems, the political strife, and the stress of daily life to which so many fall victim. May we also succeed with every effort we make on behalf of the children we strive to help.

I have been maintaining a digital log of calls and events since January 03, 2020. I would like the membership to know I will be more than happy to share the ongoing report should anyone wish to view it for any reason. I need only a request at [email protected]

Noble Michael Newgard awarded the Oregon Meritorious Service Medal. by I.S. Carl Thompson

On February 14th, 2020, Oregon’s Governor Kate Brown awarded our very own Noble Mike Newgard, The Oregon Meritorious Service Medal. Noble Newgard is a pilot in the Oregon Army National Guard and rescued nine people from the terrible flooding in eastern Oregon last week. Noble Newgard deserves our thanks and recognition. He is an inspiration to us all!

Al Kegger Shriners Taproom #6 by Noble Roger Reed and IS Bob Walliker

Many of you have no idea of who we are, how to get involved or what we are about. Let’s start with a little history of how we started.

Imperial Session 2016, future Potentate Illustrious Sir Carl Thompson and IS Bob Walliker met with Jeff Geske of Moslem Shriners from Detroit. Their Nobles just started a brewer’s club in 2015 named the “Motor City Shiner’s Tap Room No. 1.” The name Shiners was intended to include not only brewing, but also distilling spirits.

It was an instant success, becoming Moslem’s fastest growing social group. In one year, they accepted 100 new members – mostly younger Nobles. Their Ladies joined in, and liked the idea so much, they started their own group, the “Shinettes” with interest in wine making and tasting.

IS Carl, who is always enthusiastic about membership thought this might be something Al Kader Nobles would enjoy. After all, Portland Metro area boasts over 95 Craft breweries nicknamed “Beervania.”

So, IS Carl asked Noble Jeff to reserve us a Tap Room number. Al Kader was designated No. 6 and after we received our notice making us “official” and we invented the hilariously catchy name “Al Kegger Shiners Tap Room No. 6” and is now an official club of Al Kader.

Jeff was Moslem’s Potentate in 2019. By years end he has certified over 25 Shrine Temple tap rooms. At Imperial Session last summer, Moslem hosted the most fantastic Shrine tap rooms hospitality suite in the Presidential Suite of the Marriott Hotel. All members of the Imperial Divan became members.

Shrine Tap Rooms (Clubs) meet frequently at their local breweries - pub or tap room, to sample beer, hard cider and spirits. Visits usually include tours of the brewery or a presentation from their Master Brewer. Many tap rooms have started brewing their own beer.

Given our limit of space and funds to purchase and maintain equipment, through our President Steve Levin and son Jason, we have found the Portland U-Brew in SE Portland where we use their equipment and their cooler.

Our mission:

We support our Temple by providing a social group of Nobles (and ladies) interested in brewing or just having a good time. Also, we brew for Temple events like the Food Caravan social and the Big Party in February. We have a Facebook page “Al Keggers Brew Club” which you are welcome to follow. We have no regular meetings but many social events.

Concert Band By Noble Jeff Zimmerman

Maybe I’m a little too anxious, but I can almost smell Spring coming; I can see it in all the new green shoots appearing out of the ground in the yard and across the forest floor. It’s exciting to think of the new beginnings this time of year promises, and then delivers. I get in a rush for the warmer and drier weather to reach us, but at the same time I like to enjoy the emergence of new growth and savor the subtle changes of nature around me as the world prepares for the change of seasons.

In preparation for a new Shrine season, the Concert Band has taken a few steps, also. Last month the Band Officers were sworn in during a meeting before a regular rehearsal; OK, not a big change, same officers in a new year (recycling).

Noble Kevan Snyder, Pote’s Rep., conducts the Installation of Officers, Jeff Zimmerman, Pres., Brandon VanDyke, V.P., Les Geren, Treas., Durwood Jaeger, Band Aide, Carson Bailey, Chaplain. (notice the glow over his head).

Another step toward the new Shrine season is a challenging one for the band that will prove to be entertaining and exciting for our audiences; Director Jeff Hornick has recently delivered six new musical arrangements for us to work on. Some of these new tunes not only have multiple key changes but also changes in time signatures: 4/4, 2/2, 7/8, 5/4, and 3/4; we hit them all in one piece. This music is not “over our heads”, but it certainly is not the “same-old-same-old.” Over the next few weeks we will be pulling together as a unit to get

these new songs into performance condition. The people that will hear us will be pleased and several of us band members will be a little better musicians once we reach that goal.

This is the perfect time for all of you hesitantly considering joining the concert band to make the move and attend a rehearsal or two; you’ll get hooked and keep coming back. We are just developing our new concert line-up, so we’ll all be working on some new music together.

Coming soon, the Concert Band will be making our spring time journey to Forest Grove to perform for the residents and staff at the Jennings-McCall Home. Always a fun afternoon for all involved. And then we’re into parade season, a sure sign of spring and enjoyable things to come.

Fine for now.

Greeters By Noble Don Slezak

We should plan our next meeting for April 7, 2020. That will still give you plenty of time to get your taxes done.

Things should be well underway for the golf tournament. If there are any questions or problems we should have plenty of time to solve them.

Are any of you planning on going to the Potentate’s Centennial Ball? It is a little spendy but if there is enough interest we could get a table. I don’t know what the dress is but I don’t think jeans are appropriate even though in that part of Portland it would be considered formal.

Other activities of interest is the Jump, Jive & Shrine March 7th and 8th. All types of music are featured so you are bound to have a good time.

The Spring Ceremonial is April 11th at the Portland Scottish Rite Center or is it a Temple? Lets try to get some candidates for the Greeters.

Remember if you go to the parades there is always room on the people mover for you and it is a good way to show the fez.

Al Zahrah Court No. 58 by Risa Northway, PHP, Recorder

The members of Al Zahrah Court #58 Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America invite you to join us for our annual Hat Luncheon and auction on March 21st at 12:00 noon. It is a very fun

event full of laughter, food, and a lot of hats from fancy to crazy. This event benefits the Child Life Department at the Portland Shrine Hospital. Please see the flyer for more details.

We also would like to extend an invitation to our installation of officers on Saturday, March 28th at 4:00pm.

Both of these events will take place at the Milwaukie Odd Fellows Lodge, 10282 SE Main Street, Milwaukie, OR.

Nidia Temple Sewing Committee by Noble Rod Hevland

Jacque DeVore, nutrition services manager at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland, was inspired last year by another hospital that had repurposed discarded surgical wrap in a way that was useful for patients and kept it out of the waste stream, and she was curious if the same could be done at our hospital. Surgical wrap is a one-time-use plastic wrap purchased to wrap instrument packages before they are sterilized. For a few years, Portland Shriners Hospital staff were able to recycle the used wrap, but after regulatory changes, the wrap was no longer eligible for recycling and was rerouted to the trash. Each month, about 2 cubic yards of wrap were discarded, which is equivalent to one full dumpster.

Jacque, along with her colleague Kathleen Dewhurst, supply chain manager at the Portland Shriners Hospital, had the idea to utilize the used wrap to sew belonging bags for patients in lieu of using plastic bags. Belonging bags are used to contain all of the belongings a patient is taking home with them when they leave the inpatient unit. The wrap, which is completely clean, is soft and comes in shades of pink and blue. Not only would this reduce costs for the hospital for disposing of the wrap, but the project would also help the

environment.

In order to bring this project to life, Jacque and Kathleen approached the Portland Shriners Hospital sewing committee. This team, comprised of Daughters of the Nile members, meets weekly and sews a plethora of items for patients at the hospital. Examples of items produced by the sewing committee include embroidered quilts and pillowcases for each child who stays in the inpatient unit, shorts for children to wear during their appointments at the motion analysis center, wheelchair bags, and more. When the sewing committee learned about the project, they wholeheartedly agreed to help!

Due to the volume of wrap, the sewing committee rallied volunteer seamstresses from across the Pacific Northwest for this project. “We have 22 Daughters of the Nile clubs throughout the state who sew for us, and we’ve asked them to help us sew these bags,” said Sherry, a sewing committee volunteer who has been donating her sewing talents to the hospital for 14 years. “We have some seamstresses who aren’t able to travel up to the hospital, so they work on these projects at home - and this project is perfect for that!” Many thanks go out to the sewing committee for making this project come to fruition.

Jacque is incredibly passionate about this project and is a master recycler in her own right. This title is earned by attending courses to receive training on all aspects of recycling and volunteering at various events to share this knowledge. Because of her passion in this area, she has worked with the performance improvement team to explore food waste prevention options for the hospital as well. “By sewing the belonging bags from surgical wrap, we’re making an environmental impact and reducing our waste stream,” said Jacque. “We couldn’t have done this without the sewing committee!”

Forget Me Nots by Lady Judy Alley

The Forget Me Nots January lunch was held at McGrath’s in Milwaukie where everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal and visit. We caught up on each other’s travels, those of our members who have been injured or hospitalized including Doris Johnson with back surgery, another lady with a broken bone in her foot, and all generally hoping for warmer weather and spring soon.

Nora let us know that there will be an auction at the Potentate’s Salute (Ball) this year. She asked

if Forget Me Nots could put together a basket for this auction. Let’s try to each bring something to put together a wine basket for them to auction off. We will need good wine, coasters, wine jewels, cocktail napkins, snacks that go with wine, a good corkscrew, etc. Contact Nora or Judy if you have an item to be picked up or an idea to share.

We should all bring our contributions to the February lunch and give to Nora. She has volunteered to package it all into a lovely basket.

Lunch on Wednesday, February 26 will be at the Nordic Center (Broder Soder is inside) at 8800 SW Oleson Rd, Portland, OR 97223 at 11:30 a.m..

Tualatin Valley Shrine Club by Noble Herb Richardson

A couple of things here in the beginning to explain our brevity. The Editor has asked that club articles be kept short and to concentrate on Shrine Club business. So I guess jokes and storytelling are off the table.

As you may recall we canceled the January meeting due to the “threat” of a really bad winter storm with snow and icy roads to deal with. Naturally it did not happen but in this part of Oregon you never know what’s coming. Better safe than sorry.

For the February meeting we were supposed to have a couple of guest speaker who were going to talk about the need for the Shrine Football Queen support and perhaps some way that we could help financially. I am hopeful that went well. For the March meeting, I have no idea what President Ralph has in store for us, in the way of entertainment, but be assured he will come up with something.

by Dereesa Reid, Administrator of Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland

The New Year is off to a racing start. On January 6, 2020, we had members from our Tampa Executive Leadership and Joint Board Members visit the Portland Shriners Hospital to review the new strategic plan. The following week, the Portland Leadership Team, along with our Board Chairman, flew to Tampa for the Leadership Conference.

“Change” continues to be a theme at the leadership conferences. One of the keynote speakers, Cy Wakeman, provided a humorous and insightful presentation on reality based leadership – and how to reduce the “drama” at work and in life. If you are interested, Cy has a Ted Talk that can be found on YouTube titled, “Ditch the Drama – How to Live Happy in a Messy World.”

As always, it is great to see our colleagues from the other Shriners facilities and visit with the Tampa leadership team. I am excited to see all the positive change within the Shriners Health System to ensure that we can continue to serve more kids in more places for the next 100 years.

Potentate’s (Ball) Salute by Chief Rabban, Terry Griffith

Exactly 100 years ago a historic vote occurred at the 1920 Imperial Session held in Portland, to create the “World’s greatest philanthropy “ Shriners Hospital for Children! Even though history was made then, you can still be part of our Shriners history, by attending the only recognition of what changed our fraternity – the Potentates Salute.

IS Carl Thompson asked at this installation – WHY, what is your WHY for becoming a Shriner? Each of us have their own reason, but I hope that it includes helping children! All of us should be extremely proud of who Shriners are and what we stand for. You are owners of the only children’s hospital network of over 20 hospitals in the world!

On May 9th Al Kader Shriners will be hosting an unprecedented event, in lieu of the traditional Potentates Ball. This gala will be held at our old historic Shrine Temple, now the Portland Art Museum. The museum still boasts of our original wall artwork and exudes our history and that of the Shrine. Not only will you enjoy an amazing meal of local fare, but beer and wine is also provided. The evening’s entertainment will be a night to remember, with music, song, a historic presentation, a newly produced Al Kader short film by writer and director Johnny Royal (from 33 and beyond: The Royal Art of Masonry). Lady Nora Timm is working diligently on a silent auction with incredible Items. This night will truly become a part of Al Kader’s history and YOU can be a part of all this!

We are fortunate enough to have our Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder and First Lady Cheryl flying in to celebrate this historic event. Additionally, our Imperial Recorder Imperial Sir Jim Cain as well as Cristian our National Patient Ambassador.

Going back to asking WHY, as a Shriner, why haven’t you already made your reservation to attend this amazing event and be part of Shrine History? It costs $100 per person or better yet reserve a table for 10 for only $1000. Every Club and Unit should come together and reserves at least one table! Make a night of it and stay at the Embassy Suites downtown (the old Multnomah Hotel) which was used during the 1920 Imperial session. Arrangements have been made for a

special Shriner rate of #149/nightly. Shuttle service to the Art Museum will be available.

Be proud to be a Shriner and join us for an amazing evening! Call Sarah now(503)682-4420.

Tillamook County Shrine Club by Noble Carey Huckaba

AN EVENING TO REMEMBER

Another day of sunshine on the north coast of Oregon... Another beautiful rose planted in the garden of fond memories for everyone who had the good fortune of feasting upon the sumptuous dinner and delighting in the finest of fellowship at Tillamook County Shrine Club’s February Valentines Day RAJAH Social in Tillamook Moose Lodge. For everyone there, it was an evening that lifelong memories are made of.

As if a perfect ribeye steak, broiled to perfection with a luscious baked potato and a Parker house roll, preceded by an all-you-can-eat salad bar was not enough – each platter was loaded with half a dozen divinely sautéed scallops and prawns. Then, came a sizable brownie topped with ice cream for dessert. All this for $25? Now eat your hearts out for missing this one.

But the best was yet to come. The Tillamook Moose Lodge had planned a special tribute to Shriners and Shriners Hospitals this evening. Indeed, they did. We were royally received and tired out from shaking hands with what seemed everyone who attended the Moose’s Sweetheart’s dinner and entertainment.

After dinner the Shriners were introduced and invited to join the Master of Ceremonies on stage where a brief history of Shriners Hospitals was given. Al Kader Outer Guard Larry Evey and Noble Carey Huckaba were presented a check in the amount of $150 for the Portland Shriners Hospital. That contribution was the profit for the dinner we enjoyed so much that evening.

A favorite saying in Tillamook Moose Lodge is “Moose Have Big Hearts.” Truly, the moose of Tillamook certainly exemplified that on this very special evening to remember.

14 Al Kader Oasis - March 2020

Code of Ethics by Chief Rabban Terry Griffith

Fourteen months ago, Al Kader began the long and arduous task of creating a business model, an effort that will change the operation of your Temple. Many of the changes have been transparent to the Nobility and have dealt with the day to day operations. More obvious steps that have been accomplished include position descriptions, creation of committees to assist with the operations and events of your Temple, merging the office manager and facilities manager positions in a single General Mangers position and addressing financial concerns including investments and spending.

The efforts of creating a business plan for Al Kader will be a continual one, that your elected Divan is committed to accomplishing. This includes realizing that through Imperial guidelines and bylaws, some of the business tasks are already completed. One of those include a “Code of Ethics”. A Code of Ethics is defined as “a guide of principles designed to help professionals conduct business honestly and with integrity. ... A code of ethics also referred to as an “ethical code,” may encompass areas such as business ethics, a code of professional practice and an employee code of conduct.”

Just as in your EA degree the Bible is the rule and guide of our faith, the Code of Ethics is the rule of guide or our Order. As a Noble of Shriners International during your initiation, each one of us pledged “to abide by its rules and regulations”. This also includes the Code of Ethics found in the Imperial Bylaws section 210.7 and is stated below:

§ 210.7 Code of Ethics. The officers and directors of Shriners International, an Iowa corporation, and all who may be elected or appointed to positions of authority, in order to discharge the responsibility bestowed upon them by the Representatives, and to maintain the integrity of the Order, and all Shrine temples, their elected divan members, their appointed officers and all Nobility, shall abide by this Code of Ethics.

(a) Obey the law of the land and the articles of incorporation and bylaws of the Order, adhering to the spirit as well as the letter thereof.

(b) Demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness and honesty in all their fraternal activities; administer the Order’s affairs with impartiality, efficiency and effectiveness and in a manner that enhances its good name and mission.

(c) Be certain that their information is accurate when speaking on behalf of the Order; disclose

when they are stating their personal opinions; and be scrupulous in the representation of their authority and avoid misleading those with whom they deal.

(d) Approach their organizational and operational duties with a positive attitude and constructively support open communication, creativity, dedication and compassion; bring credit to the Order by their public demeanor; accept as a personal duty the responsibility to remain informed on important and critical issues affecting the Order; and avoid accepting an assignment if they cannot effectively, competently and timely discharge the responsibilities of the assignment.

(e) Exercise their independent judgment in the best interest of the Order, and free of compromising influences and loyalties; and act responsibly and in good faith, and in a manner not designed or intended to bring them personal gain from the discharge of their fraternal duties.

(f) Give notice, in a manner consistent with the corporation’s bylaws, of any duality of interest or possible conflict of interest and make it a matter of record; give notice of any direct or indirect interest in an individual or organization which is proposing or is involved in a transaction with the Order; and, thereafter, refrain from voting on the matter or transaction or otherwise attempting to exert influence over the matter or transaction.

(g) Refrain from using funds or assets of the Order for personal gain; refrain from receiving anything of value for influencing their actions; and refrain from granting or accepting favors for personal gain.

(h) Report the unethical or inappropriate behavior of directors or officers to the board of directors, when informal resolution is not effective.

(i) Refrain from using their official positions or influence either for or against any candidate for public office.

(j) Serve with respect, concern, courtesy and responsiveness, recognizing that service to the Order is beyond service to themselves.

Add. 1997. Amend. 1998 These are not just words on paper, but words with meaning that create the foundation of our fraternity and specifically “makes a good man better”. Each member of your Divan has been asked to read and sign the Code of Ethics, so that we may better ourselves by adhering to them. In turn, this provides better service you the Nobility. I would ask that each Noble spend a few minutes and consider the meaning of the Code of Ethics.

PROPOSED BYLAW CHANGES

It is the recommendation of Shriners International that the Al Kader Bylaws be corrected as follows:

• Article II -§323.13 should be changed to §323.12, because there is no §323.13.

• Article IV, Section 8 -§325.9 should be changed to §325.10, which is the correct section for election of Representatives, and "Imperial Bylaws" should be corrected to "bylaws of Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation.

• Article IV, Section 9 -§325.9 should be changed to §325.11, which is the correct section for Election Regulations.

• Article V, Section 2 -"The Imperial Council" should be changed to "Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation.

• Article VII, Section 1-§332.1(i) should be changed to §332.1(e), which is the correct section for changes to initiation fees.

• Article VII, Section 3, (A) -"the Imperial Council" should be changed to "Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation, and "Imperial By-laws" should be changed to "bylaws of Shriners International", for the same reason.

• Article VII, Section 5, (A)-"Article 23 -§323.12" should be changed to "Article 32 -§332.6", which is the correct section for life memberships for Meritorious Service.

• Article VIII, Section 3 -"Article 27 -§327.8(d) and" should be stricken because that section relates to notices for meetings of the Board of Directors and is unrelated to budgeting.

• Article VIII, Section 8 -§334.5 should be changed to §334.6, which is the correct section for audits.

Furthermore the Executive Board has recommended the following changes to the bylaws:

• Article IX, Section 1, (A) and (B) – The Property Management Committee be renamed the Facilities Committee and all references thereto be changed accordingly.

• Article IX, Section 1, (A) – The Facilities Committee shall be comprised of the Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, and the Facilities Manager. In addition, the executive board shall appoint no less than one Past Potentate, and two Nobles to the committee.

• Article X, Section 4, – The Director of Units or one of his Staff Officers shall issue directives approved by the Potentate to the Units and hold meetings as instructed by the Potentate with the executive officers of the units to discuss unit involvement in Temple activities and other concerning Temple matters.
