Rabbi Idstein, Menahel

A Torah Thought from Rabbi Idstein...

Mr. Ford, General Studies Principal

From the Principal’s Desk

Parshas Vayakhel commences with Moshe assembling together the entire nation. As he addresses them, Moshe begins by reiterating the holiness of Shabbos and the proscription against labor on the holy day. Moshe goes on to relate HaShem’s instructions concerning the building of the Mishkan, including the materials required and the many intricate details of its construction. Why does Moshe preface the plan for the construction of the Temple with the laws of Shabbos? Additionally, in describing the six days of work, the Hebrew word is vowelized to read “tai’aseh,” to mean your work “will be done,” instead of the expected “ta’aseh,” which would translate as “you should do” the work.

The Darchei Mussar proposes an answer based on a cardinal Jewish tenet: Our livelihood is not determined by our own intellect, talents, or even efforts. Rather, the blessings that we enjoy are bestowed upon us from Above. True, it is HaShem’s will that we work and exert ourselves for our sustenance, but our efforts are merely to satisfy that will. Actual success is simply a manifestation of HaShem’s goodness and desire. It is for this reason that the Torah vowelizes the word in its passive form. It may be very difficult for someone to desist from labor for an entire day each week. He will understandably worry about providing for his family.

To assuage this concern, the Torah reminds us that our livelihood isn’t determined by our own exertions and aptitude, but rather by His goodness alone. We merely need to fulfill HaShem’s will, including undertaking the appropriate effort in the pursuit of a livelihood, and HaShem will direct His blessing to us. With this understanding in mind, it will be easy and joyful to embrace the Shabbos.

The Darchei Mussar continues: This too is the reason why Moshe begins his address about the Mishkan with the laws of Shabbos. Called on to donate generously to the construction of the Tabernacle, it might be hard for some to part with their wealth. One who believes that his success is the result of the fruits of his own labor will find it difficult to be magnanimous and charitable. Moshe, therefore, reminds the nation of the true source of their blessing before calling on them to contribute to the Mishkan.

This recognition of the genuine root of our success is a fundamental and powerful force in shaping our worldview and our actions. Understanding the message that Shabbos shares with us, and taking it to heart, will dispel any desire to breach the laws of G-d and man in pursuit of prosperity and further open our hearts in generosity and magnanimity.

Have a wonderful Shabbos,

General Studies Day OnlyThursday, April 6th, is a General Studies Day

only for students in Grades K-5 only. This day is the day before our Pesach Break and the time is set aside for the younger students to relax a bit and get immersed in various activities for the day. There is a description of the activities and a registration form attached in this week’s Kolenu. We will attempt to honor students’ wishes but we need to have their registration forms in as soon as possible. Forms that are received after Friday, March 31st will not be guaranteed that we can honor your children’s requests.

There are other things that you need to make note of for that day. There will be:• No Hot Lunches served that day. All students must bring their own dairy lunch and a nutritional beverage to school. Please label your child’s lunch bag clearly.• No Buses that day. Because we end school at 2:30 p.m., there will be no bus service for students at the end of the day. Please make carpool arrangements

if necessary. If relatives or neighbors are picking up your children and are not usually the ones to do so, please let your children know J and the office know. Your child’s regular teacher may not be with your children that day.• Please let the office know if you are not planning on attending school on April 6th. There is a spot on the registration form to indicate if your children are coming to school that day or not. Please fill it out and return it to the office as soon as possible.• Students are allowed to wear tennis shoes and bring a water bottle to school. It will be a regular uniform day but some students will be involved with activities outside and all students will have recess and would benefit from wearing comfortable shoes. No flip-flops or sandals are allowed!

The General Studies staff and I are excited about this day. We look forward to providing a fun experience for your children while you are getting ready for Passover.

Sincerely,

“Classroom Close-ups” A detailed description of the exciting happenings in each grade at Torah Academy

Middle School Language Arts~Ms. Strand

This year has been very busy in Middle School Language Arts. Here’s a summary of our year so far. We started the year with the “Where I’m From” poem. Students wrote a poem to tell me all about their childhood memories and experiences. Then, we continued with poetry in our poetry unit. 6G wrote a haiku or a limerick after learning all about haikus and limericks. 7G and 7B wrote an imagery poem after learning about sensory imagery, and 8B wrote a free verse poem, which we learned is a lot tougher than it sounds. After the poetry unit, we had the essay unit. 7G and 7B worked on a comparative essay, 8B used their strong debate skills to write a persuasive essay, and 6G worked hard to finish their Academic Fair papers. We just finished our last unit on fiction. 7G read The Breadwinner, 7B and 8B read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and 6G read I, Dred Scott. Each book helped students focus on different parts of literature, like characterization, symbolism, theme, conflict, and plot - just to name a few!

This week, we started our short story unit, and we have already learned how complicated literature can be! Students are now learning about the differences between short stories and novels and thinking about what makes a short story a “short story.” I guess we will find out the answer to that question when the students write their own short stories towards the end of the unit. Before students start writing their own stories, we will read different short stories to see what writers do to create engaging stories in such a small space. I’m excited to see what each student will write for this unit!

After our short story unit, we will finish the year off with our speech unit. 8B will write their graduation speech, 7G and 7B will write a “great speech” about a great person in history, and 6G will write a demonstrative speech to show the steps of how to do something. We will be looking at other speeches as models for how to make successful and effective speeches of our own.

This year has been a whirlwind of activity! I have enjoyed getting to know all the middle school students, and I can’t rave enough about how impressed I am by the students’ eagerness to read and the students’ creative and strong writing skills. The students at Torah Academy have produced great work in Language Arts this year! I always enjoy reading the work that each student creates. Even though Language Arts might not be everyone’s cup of tea, every middle school student has shown they have strengths in Language Arts.

The pictures are of 6G and 7G when they did “Summary Snapshots” to show the important plot points from The Breadwinner and I, Dred Scott.

starting with Nissan for Parshas HaChodesh. Mrs. Heisler & Mrs. RapoportThis week in Pre-K we recognized the start of a

new season. To celebrate Spring, we took a close look at flowers. The students had the opportunity to closely examine the parts of a daffodil and plant their own flower seed. We also observed some properties of air and made our own paper bag kites.

Mrs. WennerKindergartenWe are working on our Haggadah, practicing

the Ma Nishtanah, tasting salt water with celery, reviewing the parsha, reading and practicing Kriah, playing reading games—the action never stops in Kindergarten!

Mrs. C.R. Weinberg & Mrs. SmithThis week we celebrated the first day of Spring by

wearing spring clothes, graphing them, and writing a story about how we felt. We love blasting off to new planets and discovering their uniqueness. THANK YOU to all the readers who read a Dr. Seuss book to us this week. We always enjoy this.

Starting Lech L’cha in 2B

First GradeWe are very busy with our Pesach prep! We

already learned a lot in our Hagaddahs and the students cannot wait to share everything they learn at their seder. We are also practicing our ksiva with handwriting drill a few times a week. We are also almost done learning yom sheini in Chumash!

Looking forward to another busy week filled with pesach prep!!!

Have a good Shabbos!Mrs. Herron & Mrs. BotnickThis week in Superkids the first graders

worked on your & you’re, antonyms, synonyms, categorization, and “Bossy R” words. In math we worked on skill-counting, logical reasoning, and problem solving. We began unit 3 in social studies about history.

Mrs. SingerSecond GradeThis week in Superkids the second graders

worked on words with al, au, augh, and ough. They also worked on compound words and syllables. In math we worked on finding patterns, problem solving, and ordered pairs. We began a new chapter in science, The Solar System.

Mrs. SingerNot only are we cleaning for chometz in our

homes, but we are also cleaning the chometz in our neshama. Ask us to sing you our chometz song. We are all enjoying a chance to use the special siddur for Talmida Hashavua.

Mrs Rothstein Third Grade

In Chumash we learned Yaakov was accused of stealing something. What was that?

Did Yaakov know that Rochel stole the idols?

Rochel stole Lavan’s idols. She hid them; do you know where??

What do we learn from the words “because the way of women is upon me”? That Rochel is pregnant!! (with Binyomin)We have started our Haggada. So far we did not

drop any of the 4 cups of wine on it but we are filling the pages with loads of information!! We can’t wait to share it with you!

Mazel Tov Guita on your brother’s Bar Mitzvah!Have a wonderful Shabbos! The third grade girls and Mrs. PreroThe third graders are finishing up their math work

on multiplication with regrouping once and twice. When this is completed, we will move on to division with and without remainders. We began writing for social studies this week, with a project theme of making choices when spending money. (Otherwise known as a budget?) This ties in nicely with our math work. An example of this would be buying tickets for a group of 13 students at $15 each, subtracting the total cost of the tickets from the money available, and choosing items that you can afford with your balance.

We are enjoying more vocabulary time since the grammar book is close to completion. The students are also showing off their writing skills on our weekly in-class assignments. Independent reading continues to be the highpoint of any day!

Mrs. HalekFourth GradeThis week we learned four consecutive mishnayos

with a machlokes between Bais Shammai and Bais Hillel in each one. Why do we always follow the

rulings of Bais Hillel? Ask our students for a lesson in middos, when they explain the answer.

Rabbi WaxmanFifth GradeWhat an interesting week it’s been in 5th Grade

- despite the irregularities, the girls did wonderfully (and thank you for helping with Shauli and Bluma!). Having finished our unit on the Revolutionary War, we looked at a copy of the Declaration of Independence and found some interesting things (sign your ____________!). In Science, we have begun our new unit on Health and Nutrition, and put together beautiful foldables. Continuing the “People of Sparks”, getting into solving problems in Math, and working hard on our writing projects is keeping us busy. Our trip on Tuesday - everyone got to go! - sounded amazing (I wish I could have come along!). Stay tuned for our History Test, which is coming up soon. Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Mrs. GrossSixth GradeSixth grade is hard at work preparing for Pesach

on three fronts! We divide our learning into three parts:

1) Halacha—the laws pertaining to the Yom Tov,2) Learning the actual Haggadah, and3) A special treat for us is our “Ani Maamin”

scrapbook.Pesach is the Yom Tov that is our foundation for

our Emunah. To strengthen our belief in HaShem, we are learning each of the 13 statements that begin .

We look forward to sharing this with you over the next few weeks.

Mrs. AbramczykIt was a successful week in sixth grade. We turned

the amud in the Gemara, and finished Perek tes zayin in Chumash! Keep up the great work! Have a good Shabbos!

Rabbi LichtmanIn Science, we are studying weather and what

causes it and what effects it has on the world. We finished chapter 11 in Social Studies on the industrialization of Minnesota and took a test on it this last Thursday. The boys finished the book, I, Dred Scott, and will start our last book, Tuck Everlasting, after the break. In math class, group A is working on proportions and similarity and group B is on fractions and decimals- all good stuff!

Mr. Tiemann

Seventh GradeIn Chumash we learned what someone can do

with mocking words. We also got to learn about someone who once again went out of his way to try to let go of an argument.

Refuah Shelaymah to all who need!Hopefully, next week’s attendance will be a bit

better.Mrs. EngelsonMS Geography & HistorySixth graders just finished up learning about the

many reforms Minnesotans worked for during the late 1800s and early 1900s in order to make Minnesota a healthier and fairer place to live and work.

Seventh graders have launched into World War I, learning the reasons why Europe was so ripe for war in 1914. Soon we will explore what life was like for soldiers and civilians during that “war to end all wars” and the reasons that the United States eventually entered the war.

After some brainstorming, eighth graders have decided to create mini-models of different landmarks in the Asian countries they chose to study. Looking forward to seeing them completed!

Mrs. GraifMS Language ArtsSee the Classroom Closeup!Ms. StrandMS MathematicsSeventh grade completed their unit on Geometric

Measures and we’ve started working with percentage applications. This means students will be changing fractions to decimals and decimals to percents. They will find the percent of a number on their way to calculating the total cost of an item on sale and with sales tax applied. Students will also calculate the markup of an item and the commission amount using a commission percent. Finally, students will calculate the percent of change between two numbers and simple and compound interest.

Mr. MunozComputersKindergarten - We are working on our mouse

skills and learning at the same time. Our latest effort is to draw a picture, using Microsoft Paint. But, we start with a dot-to-dot picture. The student completes two dot to dot sequence and then colors in the picture. Some choose to print their master pieces (hopefully they find their way home in black and white versions as we currently don’t have a color printer). The efforts are sometimes personalized to the student. It’s

great to see the students’ creativity.First Grade - Our big project the last two weeks is

to learn how to log into our own account. Up to now our efforts in drawing and creating Alphabet related pictures, we have been using the computer lab’s generic student account. Now each student has been given their own account. They get a username and their own password. When they connect successfully to the schools file server (to give them a place to save their work), they get to set their own password. The students were very happy when they were able to complete this task.

Third Grade - The students are working very hard learning how to use PowerPoint. They are using a program called Techno-Animal. The idea is to research a favorite animal. Learn where it lives, what it eats, what threatens it, what it looks like, etc. They then gathered pictures about the animal and drew a picture of it using Microsoft Paint. We are now working on creating PowerPoint presentations on the animal using the information gathered and the images.

Fourth Grade - Fourth Graders are learning to be correspondents. So far they’ve learned what the main parts of a newspaper i.e. things like byline, the flag, headline, lead, captions, etc. We also learned the main parts of Microsoft Word. The students are now working on an article (already written for them) that they will use the features in Microsoft Word to format it to look like a newspaper with columns, pictures, a box out, and a flag (newspaper name at the top). The students will do research and eventually produce their own newspaper article.

Mr. Baldinger

Torah Riddle What is the connection between the phrase “Moshe fulfilled Hashem’s commandment as Hashem told him” and Shmone Esrei? Answer can be found below the Inspirational Story!

Inspirational Story of the Week – A young man related to Rabbi Moshe Sherer z’l that his decision to devote his life to Torah study had its roots in a two-minute encounter at an airport with Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky zt’l years earlier, when he was a boy.

He had been trying to snap a picture of Rav Yaakov when someone motioned to him to go away. The boy’s face fell as he started to walk away, but Rav Yaakov stopped him. “That’s all right,” Rav Yaakov said as he smiled warmly, “you can take the picture.”

Rav Yaakov straightened his frock, smiled and said, “Shoot!”

“The warmth which Rav Yaakov displayed towards me,” the young man recalled, “made a tremendous impression on me. I never forgot it and therefore, committed myself to Torah study.” . ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Answers – Who Am I?
