What is an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB ProgramsNovember 15, 2014An IB education:

Focuses on learners

Develops effective approaches to teaching and learning

Works within global contexts

Explores significant content

Core principles of IB remain the same regardless of the programme(s) offered or school. Holistic education from all angles and from all stakeholders.3

THE IB MISSION STATEMENT

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Pulled out words/phrases that are at the core of an IB education and what we aspire all our students to be able to embody.4

What is an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014The IB Learner Profile

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

The IB learner profile represents 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools. We believe these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national and global communities.

The cornerstone off all IB programmes. Mission is to not only cultivate good students, but good people who understand their role in our world. 5

What are IB Programmes? All IB programmes each contain four key elements

Becoming an IB school is no easy task. All IB schools, regardless of the programmme(s) they offer, must go through a rigorous authorization process. Schools develop curricula and student assessments through the IB framework. These are internationally normed and moderated to ensure consistency around the world. Staff members also attend professional workshops with other IB teachers from around the world to learn best practices for implementing the curriculum. IB consultants and evaluators visit schools in order provide feedback and suggestions for schools to implement the IB properly.7

Longevity

While there are several new IB schools going through authorization in Chicago now, the organization has a rich, international history. Not a flash in the pan education reform. The organization consistently reflects on its practices to stay up to date with the most effective pedagogy.8

What is an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Five year program for grades 6-10

19 CPS high schools offer MYP

Courses in eight subject groups

Personal Project

Service Projects

Interdisciplinary/Conceptual units of study

Quick run through of MYP. Educating the WHOLE student and making connections from content in the classroom to the larger world. A strong MYP experience prepares students for the type of inquiry based learning required for the Diploma Programme in 11th, 12th grade. Important to note that not all CPS IB schools have MYP programmes. As you visit individual schools, be sure to ask whether they offer MYP.10

What is an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014 Diploma Programme (DP)

Two year programme for grades 11-12

Seven college level courses

Three CORE components:Theory of KnowledgeCreativity, Action, ServiceExtended Essay

The oldest IB most widely spread IB programme. All courses span two years so students can go in depth with content. Students in IB schools all over the world take internal assessments and a series of exams May of their senior year that are recognized by colleges and universities all over the world. More on that later. Important to note the Diploma Courses offered by each IB school. Required to offer subjects in each group from the diagram above, but the courses may differ from school to school. May help in selecting the school thats right for you.11

What is an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 20143 CORE Components of the Diploma Programme:

Theory of Knowledge (TOK): How do we know what we know? A course unlike any other offered in non-IB schools. A study of how cultural experiences and personal biases factor into what and how we know.

Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS): Provides a framework for experiential learning. Students complete their own projects to further develop their habits of heart and mind.

Extended Essay (EE): An in-depth 4000 word investigative essay on a subject of the students choice. Students produce the type of writing expected of them on the post-secondary level.

The CORE is what makes DP different than a program full of AP classes. The CORE effectively ties all of the college level learning that happens in the classroom and applies it to the real world. Much more than just preparing for a test.12

One of the most common questions coordinators get is how does the Diploma programme compare to AP classes. There are some stark differences between the two. 1) DP is a programme that requires schools to make conscious efforts to implement it with integrity whereas all teachers need to do is submit a syllabus to offer an AP class. 2) All DP courses are taught over two years because the level of depth and analysis that is required warrants the extra time. AP class is more content driven that is meant to perform well on one test. 3) Multiple forms of assessments in DP that gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge in several ways.13

Enables students to:

Develop a broad range of career-related competencies

Prepare for effective participation in an ever-changing world of work

Engage in learning that makes a positive difference to future lives

Become self confident people ready for life in the 21st century.

The IB Career-related Programme (CP)

The IB Career-related Programme is designed for students who want to pursue a career pathway in high school by getting involved in a CTE course of study and experience an IB education at the same time. IBCP students take career-related coursework, 2 DP courses in addition to completing core requirements.14

How do we know IB works and how will it help me in my post-secondary endeavors?

Its a great time to be a Chicago Public Schools IB student!

Outside organizations and agencies are catching on to what we have already known for a long time: IB works. 16

Why choose an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014Its a great time to be an IB student around the globe!

Research on the positive impact of an IB education on student outcomes takes place globally. Universities and research foundations in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, and the UK have all published studies that link student success to the IB.17

Why choose an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014* Outcomes do not take into account IB exam or overall DP scores, suggesting that the benefits extend to all DP students, not just those who earn the diploma.

Working to My Potential: The Experiences of Chicago Public Schools Students in the IB Diploma ProgrammeChicago Postsecondary Transition Project at the University of Chicago, Consortium on Chicago School Research, 2012

Key Findings:Compared to a matched comparison group, DP students more likely to:Go to collegeGo to a selective collegePersist in college for at least two years.*DP Students in college reported:Feeling prepared to succeed and, indeed, excel in their courseworkTheir strong academic skills, work ethic, motivation, time management and willingness to seek help as sources of strength in the transition to college-level workTheir preparation in the DP as the source of their success as college students

This is how we know it works. Yes this comparison includes students who attend selective enrollment schools as well.18

Diploma Impact Study - CCSR

Please mention that this CCSR study was based on students in CPS. The comparison group consisted of students in Magnet and Selective Enrollment schools. Also, it is important to understand the importance of all three bar graphs. Top: good. Middle: Better. Bottom: Best. We dont just want our students to get into college. We want them going to selective colleges, and then persisting in them.19

(Spend more time on this slide). IB students are twice as likely to be admitted into college to the total population, including the Ivy League Schools. For example, the University of Florida accepts 42% of applicants but accepts 82% of IB students.22

Why choose an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014What are admissions officers saying about IB Programmes?

IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB programme correlates well with success at Harvard. We are pleased to see the credential of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript. Marlyn McGrath Lewis, Assistant Dean of Admissions, Harvard University

The IB is a first-rate programme, one we are familiar with, and it prepares students well for a university like ours.Fred Hargadon, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Princeton University

We have looked very carefully at how IB students from Chicago Public Schools are doing at DePaul and we can see that they are doing well. They are academically prepared, make the most of the opportunities available to them on campus and graduate at high rates. For many of them IB was a truly transformative experience.Brian Spittle, Center of Access and Attainment, DePaul University

Being enrolled in the DP programme drastically increases a students chances of acceptance in several selective and highly selective schools.23

www.ibo.org/recognition

These are only the universities in the United States starting with A or B that recognize IB!

AP courses are not the only way to earn college credit! Hundreds of universities have their own IB recognition policy. For universities outside of the US, IB scores are recognized more often than AP.24

Why choose an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014What kind of credit can I earn from my IB classes?

Scores of 4 (out of 7) in higher level classes will earn up to ten college credits at U. Wisconsin: Madison. Go Badgers!25

Why choose an IB education?Office name goes hereOffice name/footer goes hereMagnet, Gifted, and IB Programs November 15, 2014What kind of credit can I earn from my IB classes?Example Two: DePaul UniversityIB course recognition policies. DePaul faculty conduct an extensive biennial review of IB curricula to update placement and credit policies. DePauls IB policy has a number of features including:

The recognition of Standard Level (SL) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) coursework for possible college-level credit as well as a Sliding scale (rather than an all-or-nothing) approach where appropriate (as in the case of languages). The policies also include recommendations to meet with faculty advisors as needed to determine course placement.** http://resources.depaul.edu/caa/partnerships/Pages/international-baccalaureate.aspxCPS IB graduates have earned up to a years worth of college credit at DePaul University

Save time and money by earning the IB Diploma and placing out of your Freshman year at Depaul and several other institutions that recognize the value of an IB education! This reduces the amount of loans students need to take out, or gives students the opportunity to travel abroad.26
