All prizes are donations for the cookout. This year the annual cookout was held on August 18 th . It was a fine sunny day with low humidity. The breezes threatened to blow paper around but it eventually died down. Over fifty were in attendance at this years annual event. We suspect some people simply forgot to check their calendars! There was ample food for all and as usual our organizers, cooks and volunteers did a great job. We must mention members LeRoy Crossman, our Senior Vice Commander for his outstanding work with contributions, cooking and overseeing the event. Other members involved included Bill LaLiberte, Norm Willoughby, and Lou Demers. Non-member, volunteers that have helped with this event in the past as well as this year include; Earl Beckford, Jim and Milly Scott and Dorothy Gomes. To these fine people you have our heartfelt thanks and admiration. You are truly the finest volunteers there ever have been. Thank you! This event has continued to grow over the years. We are looking forward to next year and hope to see it expand even more. It is an afternoon filled with good food, company and time. The cooking was, once again superb. The chicken, Kabobs, Hamburg, Hot Dogs, Kielbasa and Clam Cakes were all a delight. The entire cookout went off without a hitch. Maybe there were some, but nobody noticed and a good time was had by all. COMMANDER’S MESSAGE We begin another year, another season, another session. We begin where we left off. We left off with planning for our Forget-Me-Not Drive, our 25 57 Show, our plans to deliver Good and Welfare to veterans shelters, our members cookout and many more practical and wishful projects. Our FMN Drive has started; we’ve delivered Good & Welfare to shelters In Pittsfield, Northampton, Worcester, New Bedford, Fall River as well as to individual disabled veterans and their kith and kin; we bad a very successful member cookout even bringing In Hone Levesque from San Antonio, Tern Our 25 Anniversary 51 Show was caught on camera and has been showing for several weeks. We even had a Silver City Bulletin article about 1t Our regular 57 Show can now be seen on our web site, davtauntontripod.com, thanks to the Norton community cable people. We have accomplished beyond what we had planned for back In June, Yet, we must keep moving forward. To plan for on. thing at a time - is small time potatoes. We are a fairly large Chapter. We haven’t the right to sit back and say that we have accomplished our goals. There are disabled veterans other than ourselves out there that need help. There are their families that aren’t doing too good. There are newer disabled veterans being created ever day. You and I cannot rely on some other Chapter covering all the needy. It takes all of the chapters working together to get the job done; If it will ever get done. Please, volunteer to help out on the Forget-Me-Not Drive. Please, help out when we go to the hospital on a Patients Night Please, help out when we call for volunteers for the Color/Honor Guard. Please, contribute your help when we ask for “hands” at a Parade or for a committee. Please, start recruiting new members. Please. There are many ways you can help Chapter 57 do a better job. We start out the season very shortly. Would you please make an effort to come to the regular meetings. We have so many disabled veterans out there that need our help. You can make a difference. Coming to the meetings Is a beginning. In closing, I’d like to toss out an “Atta Boy” thanks to one of the members who has contributed above and beyond, Norm Willoughby has worked on the newsletter and the 51 Show with Paul Waldron, the FMN Drive, with Leroy Crossman and Bill Laliberte (among others) on the cookout, driven patients to the hospital and filled in on a couple of other tasks. Norm exemplifies everything that the DAV is about.

57S CHAPLAINS CORNERHow we perceive things

is usually different than howothers see the same thingPerception is a mirror not afact And what I look on ismy state of mind reflectedoutward

As you know perception is part of oureveryday existence We perceive thingson a daily basis through our senses ofsight sound smell touch and taste Weall know that people have differences intheir perceptions

Descriptions of events often vary Thetaste of a food is different Written materialis interpreted in many ways Look at theBible How we react to fingernails on ablackboard Some perceive odors aspleasant and others donrsquot Some thinkthings slimy others as smooth Some likemushrooms others donrsquot

All of our perceptions come from ourmind and have been developed andinternalized The things we experience aresimply our mindrsquos mirror interpretingthings for us based on our assimilatedknowledge correct or incorrect Peoplecan change their perception with someadditional information

Perception is both good and bad Weare sometimes led to false conclusions Atother times we perceive needs and act toremedy them by talking with others andthen taking action The DAV does this onan on-going basis It is good to use yourperceptions but be wary of false onesCall 1-508-824-4920 or 1-774-526-3212

YOUR VERY FIRST KISS

At last you were in her arms She waited for months to holdou and to shower you with kisses Most innocently everyother showers her newborn with kiss after kiss and so Herpes

implex virus type 1 is transmitted In the United States 999ercent of newborns are infected in this manner

The Herpesviridae are a family of eight viruses Their nameomes from the Greek word herpein which means lsquoto creeprdquond signifies the hidden and recurring infections typical of theroup We are all familiar with the cold sores caused by Herpesimplex virus type 1 and many of us have encountered Himplex virus type 2 which causes genital herpes This

roublemaker is responsible for the most prevalent sexuallyransmitted disease in the US with more than 50 millionictims Statistics show that 90 of those infected are unawaref their status

I hope you find this information somewhat interestingecause I want to tell you about the third member of this virusamily Varicella- zoste virus (VZV) that causes chickenpoxnd shingles Back in medical history it was first thought to be aild form of smallpox a ldquochickenrdquo form of the pox and the

pecks that appeared on the skin looked like the skin was peckedy chickens Prior to immunizations chickenpox was caught andurvived by almost every child More than 90 of adults inmerica have had chickenpox The virus can remain inactive in

ertain nerve roots for many years As years go by our body hasess defense against this virus than it had when younger

Recurrent chickenpox is called ldquoshinglesrdquo orrdquo zosterrdquo-bothords meaning ldquogirdlerdquo- the first from Latin the second fromreek The name relates to the linear distribution of a rash that

ppears on the skin following a nerve pathway Because nervesonrsquot cross the bodyrsquos midline the rash is limited to one side

VIRUS ALERT THE MOTHER OF ALLVIRUSES

If you receive an email entitled Badtimes delete itimmediately Do not open it Apparently this one is pretty nasty

It will not only erase everything on your hard drive but itwill also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of yourcomputer It demagnetizes the strips on ALL of your creditcards It reprograms your ATM access code screws up thetracking on your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics toscratch any CDs you attempt to play-- except Yanni CDsWith them it doubles the volume

It will automatically download nasty stuff to your harddrive and then notify the authorities It will re-calibrate yourrefrigerators coolness settings so all your ice cream melts andyour milk curdles It will program your phone auto dial to callonly your mother-in-laws number

This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank It willdrink all your good beer and replace it IC Light It will leavedirty socks on the coffee table when you are expectingcompany Its radioactive emissions will cause your toe jamand bellybutton fuzz (be honest you have some) to migratebehind your ears It will give your trees Dutch Elm Diseaseand Tinea

It will order one truckload of steer by-product fertilizerdumped onto your neighbors front yard and bill it to yourVisa card-- the only card stripe it didnt demagnetize

It will rewrite your backup files changing all your activeverbs to passive tense and incorporating undetectablemisspellings which grossly change the interpretations of keysentences

If the Badtimes message is opened in a Windows 95environment it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hairdryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub It will notonly remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses andpillows but it will also refill your skim milk with whole milk

It will replace all your luncheon meat with beef tongue Itwill molecularly rearrange your cologne or perfume causingit to smell like the steer by-product dumped onto yourneighbors yard

It is insidious and subtle It is dangerous and terrifying tobehold It is also a rather interesting shade of mauve Theseare just a few signs of infection Beware
