ResearchFocus-ConcreteLaboratory

TheUniversityofWaterlooresearchprojectsponsoredbySchoeckCanadaInc.,andtheNaturalSciencesandEngineeringResearchCouncilofCanada (NSERC)is currently underway to investigate the long-termbehaviour of concrete beams prestressed with anew generation of Glass Fibre-Reinforced Polymer(GFRP)bars.

AmongthetypesofFRP’susedincivilengineeringapplications, carbon FRP is commonly used inprestressed applications due to its high strengthand stiffness and good long term properties.GFRPbars have primarily been used in non-prestressedapplications like bridge decks and barrier wallswheretheirlowercost(relativetoCRFP)makesthemcompetitive with other types of corrosion resistantreinforcement.TheuseofGFRPbarsforprestressinghasbeen limiteddue to their susceptibility tocreepruptureandtheirrelaxationproperties.

A new generation of GFRP bars has been recentlydeveloped and is reported to have mechanicalpropertiesthatmakethebarssuitableforprestressedapplications. The ongoing research at the UWwill provide useful data on the long-term flexuralbehaviourof concretebeamsprestressedwith theseGFRPbarsundersustainedloads.

GRFP prestressed concrete beams subjected to sustained loads in mechanical loading frames

The concrete beam specimens have dimensions of150mmwidex250mmdepthx3600mmlong,andare pretensionedwith one prestressed high-strengthGFRPbar.Variables investigated includeGFRPbarsize, prestresslevelandconcretestrength.Thebeamsare subjected to sustained loading (up to300days)usingmechanicalloadingframes.

Formwork placed inside the prestressing bed

The UW research will provide information on thetransfer length of the pretensioned GFRP bars, along with the long-term behaviour of GFRPprestressed concretebeams including the relaxationcharacteristics of theGFRP bars. The findingswillcreate opportunities for prestressing applicationswith the new generationGFRP bars, andmay leadto design solutions for bridge infrastructure thathavedecreasedmaintenancecostscomparedtosteelprestressedconcreteandlowerinitialcostcomparedtoCFRPprestressedconcrete.

Improving Runway Pavement Braking Prediction Through In-novative Methods

Runway overrun remains one of themost frequentairtransportationaccidents/incidentsinthepastfewyearsandhasbecomeamajorconcernforairportandairlinesafety.Thisresearchaimstoimproveairportrunway pavement braking performance predictionthrough innovationmethods tomitigate the risk ofrunwayoverrun.Thisresearchincludesamechanistic-empiricalaircraftlandingdistancepredictionmethodandthedevelopmentofthebrakingavailabilitytester(BAT).

Cheng Zhang is the CPATTgraduate student currentlyworking on this researchprojectunderthesupervisionof Prof. Susan Tighe. Thisresearch is being conductedin partnership with TeamEagleLtd.,WestJetAirlines,Waterloo InternationalAirport, and the OntarioCentres of Excellence. Thisresearch also collaborates

with two professors, Prof. Soo Jeon and Prof. HJKwon, and a previous graduate student, from themechanicalandmechatronicsengineeringdepartmentattheUniversityofWaterloo.

A mechanistic-empirical aircraft landing distanceprediction method, which integrates pilotconfigurations, aircraft operational characteristics, accurate amounts of reverse thrust, aircraft brakingsystemcharacteristics,andrunwayfrictionconditions,hasbeenbuilt.Themethodisbasedonthemechanisticanalysis(Figure1)andcalibratedwithdigitalflightdata. A programme has been developed based onthe mechanistic-empirical aircraft landing distance

prediction method. The BATwas developed in partnership with TeamEagle Ltd. The objective of the BAT project is todesignarunwaypavementmeasurementdevicethatcan provide pilots with real time runway brakingavailability, especially for landing at airports withwetorcontaminatedrunways.Theprovidedbrakingavailability information canhelp pilotsmakebetterlandingdecisions.

Figure 3. BAT Aircraft Landing Gear Wheel (MME, UW)

The distinguishing feature of the BAT is that itsimulates an aircraft’s real braking performance. This is done by installing an aircraft landing gearwheel and brake with anAntiskid Braking System(ABS) algorithm controlling them in the back of aF350(Figure4).Severalsensorsareembeddedandmeasuretorqueload,speed,brakingpressure,wheelspeed, drag force, temperature, etc. This allows theBATtomonitorallaspectsofbrakingperformanceofthelandinggearwheel.

By combining the mechanistic-empirical aircraftlandingdistancepredictionmethodandtheBAT,thisprojectisabletogiveustheopportunitytoprovidethe aviation industry a better understanding of theeffectsofcontaminatedrunwaysonaircraftbrakingperformance as well as an accurate prediction ofaircraftbrakingperformanceanditsrequiredlandingdistance.TheresearchteamisgratefulforthesupportofTeamEagleLtd., inparticular,SteveMcKeown,PaulCudmore,andRickThibodeau.Also,thankyoutoDaveRodgerfromWestJet.Withouttheircontinuedsupport,thisprojectwouldnothavebeenpossible.
