CPALS General Body Meeting: January
Welcome!
To new members, welcome, and to old members, welcome back!
A couple of reminders: Make sure to sign in with an officer and if you’re registered,
to sign in on the hospital computers as well
Monthly meetings are mandatory; if you cannot attend one of the two, you need to let our new secretary, Danielle, know.
Three strike policy-missing meetings without an excuse, being a no-show to events that you signed up for, missing clinic shifts without making them up all count as strikes

New Members Dinner! Thursday, January 22 at 6:30pm at McAlister’s Deli on Franklin St.
Come get dinner with other new members and officers, so you’ll know other CPALS as you work your clinic shifts and volunteer at special projects/fundraising events!
Open to new registered members and new non-registered members.
Funding is on your own. You can come eat a meal or just grab a drink and chat with fellow new members. Thanks for understanding that 100% of our funds go to serving our patients and families!
Staff Appreciation Feb 3rd
Sign up sheet for items will be sent out through email
Items will include: bananas, cream cheese, cups, juice
If bringing bananas, need to bring a bunch (4-5 bananas) and write a cute thank you message on each banana…aka “Thanks a bunch!”
1 service hr / item
No fundraising or special project credit
1:1 Pals
We have a lot of kids that are waiting to be assigned.
Please consider applying for a 1:1 pal If you’ve never had one before, now is a great time to apply!
Even if you have one already you can apply for another kiddo!
Especially if your pal isn’t coming that often.
Returning CPALS will now be required to have a pal, to ensure that everyone has an active role.
Current 1:1 Pals Please remember that you are expected to be at ALL of
your pal’s appointments. You must fill out the “Here’s why I missed my pal’s
appointment…” form if you do miss any appointments, go more than two days without visiting while pal is inpatient
Only a university scheduled class or illness is a legitimate excuse for missing.
Studying for a test doesn’t count
Remember: your pals are depending on you. Unnecessarily missing appointments means letting your pal
down.
Hospital Uniforms
Now that it is winter, this is not as much of an issue but…. Just another reminder that hospital uniform is required in
ALL areas of the hospital.
This means clinic, 5 Childrens, 7 Childrens, PICU, BMTU, Apheresis, specialty clinics, etc…
Gym shorts and a CPALS tshirt is NOT acceptable.
Remember that changing once you get to the hospital is always an option
Jess and I can help you if you are having trouble with the uniform
i.e. if you feel that you need another volunteer polo
1:1 Orientations
I mentioned this earlier, but just another reminder that returning CPALS are required to have a pal!
Attending a 1:1 orientation is required before you can apply for a pal. If you have attended an orientation within the past 3
months, then you do not need to attend another one.
There will be 1:1 orientations following today’s meeting and Thursday’s meeting.
If you haven’t had a pal before…
Please come talk to myself, any of the other officers, or leadership team members if you have any questions.
The idea of having a 1:1 pal can be intimidating, but we are here to support you and answer any questions that you may have.
If you are nervous about meeting your pal when you are assigned, a member of the leadership team will be more than happy to go with you!
1:1 Applications
The application is on the CPALS website.
Please remember that the more availability you provide on your application, the easier it will be to match you with a pal.
Make sure you have attended an orientation before you apply. We cannot assign you a pal if you do not indicate on the
application that you have attended a required orientation.
Newly Registered Members
For those of you that are newly registered and currently have a clinic shift, you can apply for a pal after 3 weeks of working in the clinic.
Please remember that you MUST complete 3 weeks in the clinic as well as attend a 1:1 orientation before you will be assigned a pal.
Again, if you have any questions please come talk to myself or any of the other officers or leadership team.
Small Group Time!
Break up into groups of 6 people
Here are the rules: each type of candy corresponds to a question/role in the group: Twix: What have you enjoyed most/are most looking forward to about being
in CPALS?
Snicker’s: Describe one day in clinic/one day with your pal that stands out most to you. What made it so memorable?
M&Ms: What is the most rewarding thing about having a 1:1 pal?
Skittles: What do you and your pal do when you typically visit? What are some of your pal’s favorite things?
Starbursts: Tell us about a difficult time you went through with your pal/difficult day in clinic. It could be difficulty understanding their diagnosis, difficulty watching your pal when they were having a hard day, feeling uncomfortable around their parents, etc. How did you handle it?
LifeSavers: You are the group’s scribe! We want you to write down the stories you hear, and we will pick one to turn into a CPALS Highlight to put on our website!
If you get a question that does not apply to you (aka you are a newly registered member), swap pieces (or just questions) with another member of the group so you can participate as well
