CarriePeters isaGraphicDesignstudentenrolledintheFineArtsProgramatPortlandStateUniversity.Though kept busy with her school design projects,Carriehasbeguntobranchoutintofreelancework. Born and raised in Southern Oregon, Carrie'sgrandfather,artistandbusinessowner,JimSnook–ofJimSnookCartoons–instilled a love of art inCarrieat a young age, encouragingher to seekout beauty inthe world around her. As the third of six children,Carriefoundtheartofcommunicationandtheknackfor organization both to be necessary survival skillswhile growing up. These life learned competenciesprovedadvantageouswhentheymetupwithherloveforaestheticbeautyintheGraphicDesignfield. InherfreetimeCarrielovestoread,browsedesignblogs, and store up visual fodder for inspiration. Sheplays several instruments and finds musical outletin writing her own songs, and playing small acousticgigs from time to time.Anenthusiasticparticipant inoutdoor adventures, she can be foundmost weekendsbackpacking or climbing, snowboarding or wake-surfingwithherphotographerhusband,Jeremy.CarrieiscurrentlytrainingtorunthePortlandMarathonthisOctober. The intent in Carrie's design work is to producethoughtful, appropriate assimilations of both verbaland visual information, in formats both pleasing andaccessible to the viewer.Her goal is to create a happyunionbetweenaestheticsandsubstance.

ead throughout the world, and recognized today as the undisputed master of the American Gothic horror story as well as being considered the father of the modern short story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) revealed his genius in tales of death, terror, evil, and perversity. His tales and poetry have been admired by Dostoevski, translated by Baudelaire, and served as influences to other writers from Sir Authur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson to James Joyce and T.S. Eliot. Poe has become a legendary figure, representing the artist as obsessed outcast and romantic figure.

His visions, often truly terrifying, are shaped by cool artistic calculation and reveal some of the dark possibilities of human experience. But his enormous popularity and his continuing influence of literature depend less on legend or vision than on his stylistic and formal accomplishments as a writer of fiction and a great lyric poet. Indeed, he is renowned both for sensuous musicality and for hypnotic incantatory rhythms. Poe was also adept at the humorous sketch or playful jeu d’espirit, and all of his stories reveal his high regard for technical proficiency and for what he called “ratiocination.”

oe’s immense powers as a storyteller are at their peak in this anthology. Highly skilled in achieving a calculated psychological effect, he created chilling fictional nightmares permeated by mysterious forces, grotesque creatures, and improbable hallucinations.

The works contained in this volume are presented chronologically to showcase the development of Poe’s vision of an indeterminate universe that led him to become infamous as the master of the macabre, the possessor of a brilliant and original mind. These timeless stories from over one hundred years ago have an international popularity that few authors can claim.
