Dear Matthew

20:20 Programme - Tuesday 14 June 2005

Thank you very much for agreeing to speak again this year to the 20:20 group onTuesday 14 November 2006 at No 10 Downing Street. Your support and time is muchappreciated. The timing will be 14.15 <-15,30 pm. As agreed with you, Simon Marysand Ruth Turner will also be taking part in this session. I was grateful to you when wemet for your suggestions as to how we our delegates could get the most from thismeeting and I have used these suggestions to set out below the structure I amproposing. I have also attached the list of participants and a copy of the fullprogramme.

Just to remind you, 20:20 is both for graduates of Common Purpose programmes andother senior decision-makers who have a regional, UK-wide, European or internationalrole. It has two main themes - governance and wealth creation and is designed to givethe participants an understanding of the major trends that will influence Britain andEurope over the next 20 years as well as an understanding of how the UK works.

One of the key aims of the week is to give the 20:20 group an insight into howgovernment and how, in particular, the central government machine actually works. OnMonday 12 June, they will have had input from the new Director of DEMOS MadeleineBunting, and from Sir Richard Mottram from the Cabinet Office on how the civil serviceworks.

What I am after for the visit into No 10 is an insight into what is happening at the centreof government with regard to long-term strategic thinking, policy and delivery. Prior tothe meeting ) will have asked the participants to consider what they realty want to findout that they don't already know. The group will have had some time to pull theirthoughts together and I will ask for 3 volunteers from the group to act as interlocutors. To start the ball rolling I will ask you. Ruth and Simon to introduce yourselves and tobriefly outline your role and perhaps the one thing you think is key for the rulinggovernment over the next year, I will then ask the three participants to start the bait
