The children have been celebrating all things educational. The theme has been “Cracking the Code” with a numeracy emphasis. We congratulate Miss Wickes who received her 40 year service with the Education Department at a special ceremony in Melbourne on the weekend. Chris has taught at Cowes Primary School for the past 37 years and we sincerely thank Chris for her dedication to all of the 100s of students she has taught over the years. At assembly on Monday indigenous elder Sonia Hume presented Lily Huther with her prize for designing the football jumper which will be worn by the Phillip Island Senior football team at the indigenous round on July 4 at Inverloch. Lily was presented with a Rip Curl back pack and a VIP pass to the indigenous games between Essendon and Richmond. We congratulate Lily for designing the winning jumper. Our student leaders were presented with their badges at assembly on Monday. New financial assistance is going to be available from the Victorian Government in Term 3. For more details please read the information in the newsletter. This fortnights Ray White Reading Award went to Jake Sonagan - Coates who has made extensive progress in reading this term. He can now read more complex books in a fluent and expressive manner. He participates enthusiastically during reading Circles each morning and independently selects appropriate books for take- home reading. On Tuesday the grade P - 2 students had their free dress and disco in the gym, whilst the 3- 6’s had their day today. Entry was a gold coin donation and has raised over $600. This was run by the Junior School Council who are aiming to raise funds for new outdoor seating. There will not be an assembly on next Monday. The football and netball teams played some very good games last Friday at the interschool sports and were very competitive. Thank you to the coaches and supporters of the teams. We had a guest educator, Gordon Poad from the UK visit last Thursday and Friday. Gordon worked with a number of classes over the two days and was observed by the teachers and support staff. Gordon has expertise in Philosophy for Children through dramatic and creative approaches. Gordon provided some very interactive, enjoyable warm up activities followed by a variety of stimuli, be it a book, activity or oral story to set the scene. He then asked the children a variety of open ended questions and then challenged their thinking. The aim of the sessions were to engage the children in strong oral activities along with problem solving whilst justifying their answers and forming their own opinions and questions related to the given main idea. Tomorow is National Walk to School Day. There will be various walk to school buses operating at a variety of stops, where parents will accompany the children as they walk to school. The stops are listed in the newsletter. A breakfast will be supplied by the R.S.L. on arrival at school. At times we engage in different tasks which create

uncertainly and apprehension. This can make us reluctant to

attempt or even continue the completion of a task.

Committing to these tasks and seeing them through helps

people do things they wouldn’t otherwise dream of doing.

Remember to always give your personal best and show

commitment. Seeing things through can be extremely

rewarding.

Library News I am looking for two old metal bath tubs which I plan to

make couches out of. One for the Library and one for

myself. So I would love one to be donated but am willing

to discuss a price for the other one. If anybody can help me

drop in at school or phone Kevin on 0422 629 057.

Wonthaggi Secondary College Wonthaggi Secondary College offers a SEAL (Select Entry

Accelerated Learning) program beginning in Year 7, to

cater for bright and highly motivated students. The program

involves accelerated learning in English, Mathematics,

Science, Humanities and Japanese throughout years 7-9.

In this way we hope to provide gifted students with a

challenging and satisfying learning experience. If you are a

parent of a grade six student and think your child would

benefit from such a program, you can nominate your child

to sit the placement test.

If you would like to know more about the program please

contact either Heather Sullivan (SEAL Coordinator) or Ross

Bramley (Campus Principal) at Wonthaggi

Secondary College Dudley Campus on 5672 0900.

You can also contact Heather via email:

[email protected]

Nomination is the first step and of course does not lock you

or your child into the program.

Education Week Prep Family Maths Session The Prep classes will run a Family Maths Session this

Friday May 22 from 2.30 to 3.30 in their classrooms.

Prep Parents are invited to join their children at this time.

Walking to School Buses We would like to run some walking school buses from the major estates in Cowes. These are supervised groups that students can join anywhere along the route. I need a minimum of 2 adults per 'bus', so the more volunteers the more routes can be supervised. Parents who have a working with children check, and are able to help please see Mrs Moore in room 4.

Financial Assistance Information for Parents

Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF)

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond

the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund will ensure that no student will miss out

on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun

activities.

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great

outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world

works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a

healthy curriculum.

CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible

families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may

be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses

relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student will be:

$125 for primary school students

$225 for secondary school students.

How to Apply

Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download

National Walk To School day 22/5/15 There are 3 walking school buses which children can join on Friday. Please see the maps, routes are marked

with dotted lines. Children can join the bus along the route when ever they like but please add your name to

the list carried by the adult leading the bus. Once your name is added you will get a sticker and a gotcha.

Once at school the leader will do a quick roll call to make sure everyone arrived safely. If you live too far

away to walk you are welcome to be 'dropped off' on one of our walking bus routes and walk at least some of

the way to school. There will be an extra breakfast club provided on Friday to reward the hungry walkers.

Last year we had 63% of the school walking. If the weather is nice we hope to beat that record.

Penguin Parade Island, Australia International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW)

To mark ICAW the student environment team have made new posters to increase the quality of our classroom compost. Recently the vegie garden helpers have commented on the increased

quantity of compost collected from the classrooms. This means several things: we are all eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegies and we are putting it into the compost bins not the landfill. Great

compost however needs more than just fruit scrapes. Our new signs show that paper towel, used

tissues and plain paper bags can all go into the compost adding important dry components. This will improve our vegie garden compost and reduce our waste further.

In the Vegie Garden we have started a 'Hot Compost'. Instead of taking 6 months to breakdown,

this pile will only take about 18 days! The centre of this pile will reach up to 55oC. Wow!

Bring and buy auction fundraiser for Nepal This Sunday May 24 at 12 noon at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort.

Everyone is invited to this community event. It is estimated that 8,000 – 10,000 people died in this disaster, and triple that number

were injured. Many survivors are cold, hungry and without shelter .

Two island residents, in Nepal when the quake struck, are safe and now doing their utmost to raise funds that are desperately needed by them.

A second major quake has followed the first. Local groups including the Phillip Island Lion’s Club, Phillip Island and San Remo Rotary,

World Vision, Phillip Island Adventure Resort, Phillip Island RSL and many individual supporters, are involved.

A feature of the day will be some great Nepalese food cooked by Nepalese chefs from a Melbourne restaurant, who are coming down especially for the day.

There will be the usual sausages, hamburgers and hotdogs, chips, tea and coffee, beer wine and softdrink to purchase, at very reasonable prices.

Please bring something for the auction …whether it be small, medium, something out in the shed you no longer use, an unwanted gift etc.

Kids are very welcome. There will be face painting and there’s a great playground and equipment to keep them occupied while the auction goes ahead.

Entry to the event is by donation, and the food for sale is at very reasonable prices. Tables will be set up so why not organise a group of friends to come along.

For more information, or to offer items for the fundraiser, or have them picked up, if unable to bring on the day, please call 5952 3201.
