Engaged

The essence of learning at Rangitoto College balances the demands of both commanding content and mastering the skills of learning. Students are encouraged to choose subjects that they are passionate about, as well as those in which they feel their future lies. This fosters the joy of learning.

The College curriculum focuses on a set of Key Competencies that supports students in developing the skills to make them life long learners. The College specifically emphasises the importance of students developing Thinking skills that will enable them to form goals, take responsibility for their own learning and ultimately lead them into the world beyond school.

In 2013 students at all levels were encouraged to bring their own IT devices to support their learning. Programmes of work have been modified to take advantage of the opportunities that this provides.

A diverse range of additional options is offered for one term to give students three further choices from Art, Dance, Drama, Economics, Electronics, Textile Technology and Food Technology, Design and Visual Communnication, Materials Technology and Performance Music. In Year 10, students can begin to explore specialised subjects to meet their individual interests and strengths.

All students are challenged to fulfil their diverse and individual ambitions. Extensive data, collected from contributing schools and extended by further testing, is used to identify and track the academic well-being of individual students. It is our aim to develop, through good teaching practice, the literacy of all our students, enhancing their ability to use and understand those language forms required for successful communication in society.

To support their learning, from 2015 Year 9 and Year 10 students are required to bring a computer device.

Bridget Costello (Class of 2007)

After completing 7th form at Rangitoto College in 2007, I moved to Wellington to study classical performance voice at The

NZ School of Music, Victoria University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music and a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance.

At NZ School of Music I played the lead role of Tytania in the opera ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and have gone on to

perform in The NZ Opera Chorus in their productions of ‘The Bartered Bride’ and ‘Madame Butterfly’.

In November I travelled to the UK to audition for prestigious music conservatoires. I was accepted at both Royal Academy

of Music and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I will begin study of a Postgraduate Diploma in Musical Theatre at Royal

Academy of Music in London this September. I am one of 15 females selected for the 2013-14 intake and only the fourth

New Zealander to be accepted on this course since its establishment in 1993.

My experience at Rangitoto College and the opportunities afforded me helped prepare me for a career in the Performing

Arts. I was a member of the invited choir Fundamentals and Senior Dance Technique Troupe and played lead roles in the

musicals ‘Fame’ and ‘Hot Mikado’. In addition to the plentiful performance opportunities, the calibre of teaching was high. I

am grateful for the individual support I was given to pursue my performing arts goals.

Rangitoto College prides itself in finding the most suitable

course or job for every graduate. We prepare them

with the skills necessary for success at tertiary level study

and help develop their character so that they are well

prepared for whatever path they take post study. Students

are also fully supported in their applications for scholarships

to financially support tertiary study. More and more

students annually experience success with their applications.

Students have access to careers advice and counselling to

assist them with academic pathways and transitioning out

of school.

Senior students can request an individual careers

appointment. Many of our students seek information

and support with:

• subject choices

• tertiary course selection

• applications for tertiary institutions and scholarships

• preparation for job training/apprenticeship offers

Performing at Rangitoto College is an integral part of college life. It encompasses everything from taking a support role in a class performance to singing with your choir in a National Competition at the Auckland Town Hall.

Performance encourages students to take risks and interact appropriately with a variety of audiences. It requires creativity, discipline and dedication – precisely the skills which support all learning.

These disciplines give all students the chance to develop their skills and enable gifted musicians, actors and dancers the chance to shine on the national stage. Further highlights during the year include a Dance Showcase, Senior Shakespeare, Performing Arts Showcase, Student Composers Concert and many smaller scale performances from Music, Dance and Drama as well as a cultural week celebrating the diverse nationalities within the college.

Our superb facilities include a fully equipped auditorium, theaterette, computer suite and specialist music rooms, with a team of eight full-time staff, five ancillary staff and 30 itinerant tutors providing inspirational tuition to hundreds of aspiring performers.

The broad curriculum prepares students for all aspects of Performing Arts at tertiary level and for future employment in the industry.

Enthusiastic staff facilitate the development of diverse skills and awareness through groups to troupes celebrating international dance and music. Both mental and emotional growth is nurtured with the competitive demands of chess, debating, future problem solving and other challenges including clubs as varied as science-fiction, tramping and Robotics. Students have every opportunity to formulate and explore their preferences, discovering new interests and capabilities they may never before have recognised in themselves.

Rangitoto College was an open door full of opportunities. With passionate and experienced teachers in all classes, I found for the first

time learning was a joy not a chore. In my preferred choice of subject and field of studies, I had Mrs Stuchbury, my Hospitality teacher,

constantly challenged and encouraged me throughout the years I had her. Since then, I’ve appeared on Masterchef NZ, did time in the

kitchens of Sky City Grand under the guidance of the likes of Peter Gordon and Al Brown. I now run and co-host a cooking segment

on TV 2’s The Erin Simpson Show.

Caitlin Smallfield (Class 2012)

I am priveledged to attend the University of Hartford in Connecticut, USA on a full footballing (soccer) scholarship where I am studying

Business Management. All through my time at Rangitoto College this was a big dream of mine, so to be able to say I’m actually living my

dream is something I’m extremely grateful for. While I anticipated holding my own on the football field, I made the Rookie Honours

Board for our conference, I have also had a successful academic transition making the Dean’s honours roll, Alpha Lambda Delta (a

national honours roll for Freshman) and am in the Junior Achievement programme at Hartford.

I owe much of this success to Rangitoto College, for preparing me not only in the classroom, but in time management skills, leadership,

work ethic and performance on and off the sports field as well. I have huge aspirations to run my own business but would also like to

see how far my footballing career can go. In the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying my time in the United States but will never forget

my five years spent at Rangitoto College and hope I can encourage other athletes to live their dream as well.

Global ConnectionsStudents and staff at Rangitoto College are challenged to look around and beyond the familiar

and engage with the world at large through visits, service projects and goodwill initiatives.

These experiences are life changing and often result in huge personal growth and paradigm shifts

for the individual.

Recent adventures included cultural visist to Europe and South America to enrich students’

understanding of culture, language and society and expand personal boundaries through

friendship and understanding. Another group of students attended commemoration ceremonies

in both Turkey and New Zealand as part of our ‘Tears of Gallipoli” programme which involves

students from Istanbul, Australia and Rangitoto College.

The importance of service is one of our values and we participate in several international service

projects. Our annual special aid mission to Cambodia is well established in the college. It allows

teachers and students the unique opportunity to learn about the culture, heritage and history of

Cambodia. Students also build houses for Cambodian families and deliver funds, which they have

raised, to orphanages.

2014 marked the inaugural school exchange to Xi’an in China and a new exchange programme

has been developed to Madrid in Spain.

Another annual service project happens in January each year when students and staff travel to

teach English as a second language to students in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Individual students can also request to spend time overseas and we have placed individual

students for various lengths of time in Belgium, Chile, Germany, Japan, Paraguay and the USA.

The college regularly welcomes visitors from all over the world and these visits are often

consolidated into lasting relationships.

Global awareness and social conscience is further nurtured through students’ active

participation in Amnesty International, child sponsorship, environmental projects and a

commitment to Fair Trade.

Rangitoto College students are global citizens and have a strong awareness of and commitment
