Hyderabad: Since its launch on Tuesday, the ‘alyte’ services, a joint initiative of Rachakonda Police and
Mahindra Logistics, received 20 calls from citizens requesting its services including transport of pregnant
women and dialysis patients.
Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said the Covid Control Room and Mahindra
Control Room received 20 calls requesting vehicle services.
Quoting specific cases, Bhagwat said a pregnant woman from Old Bowenpally sought assistance for a
monthly prenatal checkup. She was taken to the Maternity Hospital in King Koti. The woman, expressing
her gratitude, even posted a video on social media thanking the police and Mahindra ‘alyte’ services.
Another pregnant woman from Uppal, who was experiencing labour pain, was shifted to a hospital in
Kachiguda.
“Though the service is not meant for such medical emergencies, considering that there was no
ambulance available immediately, the service was provided going beyond the terms of agreement. The
woman thanked police for the gesture,” Bhagwat said.
In another instance, a diabetic kidney patient, who called on the control room seeking help, was shifted
from his house in Hayathnagar to a hospital in Vanasthalipuram. Similarly, officials promised to take a
dialysis patient from Chaitanyapuri to the hospital at Erramanzil every alternate day.
Officials said, requests like going to the bank for withdrawing money, or to the pension office, monthly
checkups of children and elderly are also being accepted as the motive of the ‘alyte services’, which has
seven cabs at its disposal, is to address such needs to make life more comfortable during the lockdown.

Shazia*, her husband and four children tested negative for the coronavirus at the Chest Hospital of
Erragadda in Hyderabad on Monday. The test results came after 3 pm that day. By the time the family
checked out of the hospital it was past 6 pm and curfew had come into effect. With no option of public
transport, the family of six found themselves stranded, with no help coming from the hospital
authorities nor the police.
“The highway was deserted and we approached the police checkpoint seeking help, but the police
shooed us away. The police didn’t even ask why a family of six was out on the streets during curfew,”
says Shazia.
To help stranded people in Hyderabad the city police along with Mahindra Logistics (MLL)' Alyte cab
services, set up a call centre for the public to meet their non-medical requirements. Those who have a
requirement are to dial 100 or reach out to the coronavirus control room, and one of the 10 vehicles on
standby will be provided based on the requirement.
Shazia claims her husband desperately dialled 100 seeking assistance that evening, but no help came.
“The emergency service listened to what we had to say then cut the call and we didn’t hear from them
after,” she alleges.
As of April 19, the call centre by Mahindra Logistics service received 565 calls, 223 of those requests
were denied, while 342 were accepted.
With no help coming and the children starting to get thirsty and hungry, Shazia in desperation reached
out to an activist. The activist also tried to help by calling SR Police station alerting them about the
presence of a stranded family. “The station inspector promised to send help but no one came, we finally
had to ask a relative who took the risk of helping us reach our home,” says Shazia.
The family resides in Old City, 12 km from the hospital, in one of the 146 containment zones. They were
brought for testing as a precautionary measure to the Chest Hospital on Sunday as Shazia’s husband
who worked at a clinic had exhibited flu-like symptoms, “We were not told that we should arrange our
own transport. We didn’t ask anyone from our family to come to pick us as they have to cross a lot of
checkpoints and the police may harass them,” adds Shazia.
The suspension of public transport has hit the poor and migrant workers the hardest in Telangana, the
state appears to have also not taken stock of citizens possibly still being stranded in various parts of the
state almost a month into the lockdown.
At Warangal, on Tuesday the Minister for Panchayati Raj Errabelli Dayakar Rao made news when he
helped a woman and her daughter stranded before MGM Hospital since March 23 when public
transport was suspended due to the lockdown. The mother-daughter duo had been staying at the
hospital premises since then and managed to find a way back home because they were spotted by the
minister.
Chest Hospital officials were unavailable for comment. Indian Medical Association (IMA) officials in
Hyderabad say they will try to address the issue of transport to stranded patients. The Hyderabad police
were unresponsive.

At least 100 people residing between Bandra and Dahisar have benefitted from the free cab service
started by Mumbai Police in partnership with Mahindra Logistics Ltd Alyte.
These cabs pick up those facing emergency during the lockdown and drop them home as well. The free
cab service is only being provided for senior citizens, specially-abled individuals, expecting mothers etc,
who are unable to secure transport for essential services. One can book this service by calling police
control room on 022-28840566, 022-26457900 and 9867097665.
Currently, the service is restricted to the area between Bandra and Dahisar, and police are looking for
options to increase the free cab service to remaining parts of the city.
A senior citizen from Kandivali was given a cab to go to a hospital in Bandra for a medical check-up that
could not have been avoided. In another case, the cab service took a man from Malad (West) to
Kandivali (West) to get medicines for his 94-year-old mother because the medicine was available
exclusively at one chemist shop. The cab service also helped six other cancer patients to reach hospitals.
Pranaya Ashok, deputy commissioner of police (operations) and Mumbai Police spokesperson said, “We
will take a review. We are also looking for more options to increase the free service. If need be we may
also extend it to rest parts of the city.”
The service is also being extended to doctors, nurses and others involved in providing essential services.
Vibhu Manya, head of enterprise mobility, Mahindra Logistics Ltd (MLL), said, “We have been receiving
250-300 calls per day on our helpline numbers. More than 100 people have availed the services in 10
days since the launch of the services in the city on April 14.”
The helpline, however, does not deal with medical emergencies where an ambulance is needed. In such
cases, the police intervene and try to get an ambulance.
Manya confirmed that they are getting calls from other parts of Mumbai. “We are awaiting permissions
from the authorities to operate in these regions. However, in serious cases like cancer or dialysis or
pregnancy checkups, we work with Mumbai police to make exceptions also,” he added.
