V Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2020

This past Saturday and Sunday I spoke at all the Masses announcing the launch of an Increased Offertory effort in our parish. One of the assertions I made was the necessity of gratitude for, and use of, our time, talent and treasure as Disciples of Christ Jesus. The alliterative nature of that catch phrase (time, talent and treasure) appeals to me but I have a sense that it has become a wee bit shop worn as to lose its effectiveness. However, the Liturgy of the Word, and Sacred Scripture never gets shop worn as it is alive, eternal and applicable for all time. This weekend’s Liturgy of the Word calls us to be aware of our responsibilities as disciples of the Lord Christ. The excerpt from Matthew’s gospel is taken from the section in the Great Sermon immediately after the Beatitudes. Through the Beatitudes we have been directed by Jesus to be poor in spirit, mournful, meek, merciful, clean of heart, peacemakers and righteous. These are not mere pleasant personality traits a good person accidentally possesses. These virtues are what it means to be a disciple. That discipleship, our discipleship, is meant to be recognizable by our deeds. Fr. Karl Rahner, SJ was one of the most influential theologians in the 20th century. Early in his writings he posited the existence of a phenomenon he called “The Anonymous Christian.” You know people like this. They are basically decent neighbors, reliable employees, faithful friends, generous with their resources and helpful when necessary. They live an honest and modest life. They do that without benefit from, or framed by, Gospel values. Rahner actually went further and asserted that they are all those things, without benefit of the gospel, and may even be indifferent or even op-positional to the gospel specifically, and any organized religion generally. Later in his career, Rahner recanted and asserted that there can be no such being as an anonymous Christian. Our Christianity, our belief in and reliance on Jesus leaves, us no choice but to reject anonymity and proclaim who it is we are and why it is we are. This does not mean that we are to be crowing about our virtuous deeds in an endless droning of megalomaniacal boasting - look what a wonderful person I am. It is not about us. It is about Jesus and His message, the Gospel. On the opening pages of one of my favorite novelist’s work The Last Gentleman, through the character Will Barrett, Walker Percy asserts: Happy is the man who realizes that the possibility of everything does not lie open to him. The reality is that we are not all called to notoriety. Not much of what we do winds up as the big story on Action News. We do not make history books. Ours is a world marked by ordinariness. We ought not to aim for fame but aim for fideli-ty. This too is accomplished in the everyday way we respond to the call of discipleship. How do we live as recognizable disciples in the 21st century? We look to the 8th century BC prophet Isaiah who frames our response powerfully in the first reading this weekend.

Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless;

clothe the naked when you see them, do not turn your back on your own.

… remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;

bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted…

Isaiah 58: 7-8,9a-10 Do you think you cannot do those things? You need to think again and re-read what St. Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth:

I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation

were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power….

I Corinthians 2: 3 – 4 Paul recognized both his weakness and God’s power at work through him. God’s power can be at work in and

through us as we continue to collaborate with the work of Grace, staying close to the God and caring for each other. Faithfully,

Msgr. Diamond

I O /S T Msgr. Diamond has written to all parishioners to ask all to consider making an increase in their giving to our weekly Offertory. Please use the special blue and white envelope to indicate your new contribution amount and enclose it in that envelope. In succeeding weeks, place that amount in your regular Sunday envelope. Thank you to all who have taken advantage of elec-tronic giving, which makes consistent giving easy. Visit our web site at www.saintcornelius.org and click on the “Treasure / Parish Giving” banner. Thank you for your support.

The Parish Religious Education Program has a desperate need for a catechist. The teacher of our combined 3rd/4th grade Wednesday evening class has to step down for medical rea-sons. This is a great opportunity to try out being a catechist for just the remaining 10 classes of the school year! Please contact Mrs. Swetland if you are interested. 610-459-2502 or [email protected] Support and lesson plans will be provided as needed.

St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith ministry in southern Chester County. Our forty-four registered volunteers spend time with the most vulnera-ble in our neighboring community until they find stable housing. We need 27-30 volunteers each time we serve 4 times a year. We welcome new vol-unteers and if you can’t volunteer, we would appreciate donations to support the food purchases for the meals that we prepare when we have our time to volunteer. To sign-up to volunteer or contribute contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214

SNOW CLOS ING The safety of our children both in school and PREP are of the utmost importance. Ice, sleet and snow can come at any time. During the week, Monday through Friday, if the Unionville Chadds Ford School District announces the closing of schools, or a two hour delay because of weather, the 7:30 AM Mass will not be celebrated. It takes a big undertaking to clear the parking lot and have the pathways shoveled. Closing the school and canceling PREP allows our snow removal company to clean up the snow and restore our property to a safe and active place. If schools are closed ALL ACTIVITIES for the day and evening are canceled.

Remember - Safety comes First!!

The St. Cornelius Literary Society

Our Inaugural meeting of the SCLS on January 12th was a strong turn out of participants who engaged in commentary and offered their insights and thoughts on Graham Greene’s book The Power and the Glory. We will keep our usual format of time and place on Sunday, February 9 at 3:00 PM in the Fr. Simon Room in the PLC. Our reading for our next meeting will be taken from the Flannery O’Connor library. You can find three short selected stories in her collection titled The Complete Stories.

A Good Man is Hard to Find The Enduring Chill The Displaced Person

I hope you find these stories thought provoking and insightful in your own reflections.

Nominees must be Catholics in good stand-ing, registered and active parish members. Newly elected members will serve a three-year term. Nominees will be contacted for confirmation and will be required to submit a brief biography.

Parish councils are serving an increasing role in our parish life. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please use the nomination ballots that will be placed in the pews on a weekend in mid-March. Place this form in the nomination ballot box located in the ves-tibule of the church on those weekends. You will also be able to submit nominations electronically through Msgr. Diamond’s Thursday afternoon email.

Once the nominations are confirmed the candidates will provide a brief biography articulating why they want to take on this unique and significant role within the par-ish. Final voting will take place in late April.
