JanuaryWinter in Edale: an incautious step by a young Kirton Lindsey Scout caused him to get firmly stuck
in the mud as the group made its way up towards Hollins Cross (1300 feet), in the Peak District
National Park. This was also the route taken by many mill workers on a daily basis, who travelled
between Castleton and Edale during the nineteenth century.
FebruaryChurch House is the administrative hub of the Diocese of Armagh, which extends over parts of
counties Londonderry, Tyrone, Armagh and Louth. Located in Abbey Road, it is close to the
Cathedral Church of St Patrick, built on the site of the church and monastic community founded
by St Patrick in 445.
MarchGerbera is a member of the daisy family and was named after Dr Trugott Gerber, an eighteenth
century German botanist and friend of Carl Linnaeus. The plant is native to the tropics and is
commonly known as the African daisy. A perennial, it is attractive to insects and birds but resistant
to deer. The picture was constructed by combining multiple images focused at different points
into a single composite image
AprilThe common blackbird is a species of true thrush. RS Thomas’ poem ‘A Blackbird Singing’ cites
"a suggestion of dark Places about it.” However it is not normally seen as a symbol of bad luck. In
medieval times the trick of placing live birds under a pie crust just before serving may have been
the origin of the nursery rhyme. A blackbird also featured on the UK 4d stamp in 1966.
MayFamous Unitarians were celebrated on Dunas Day by the church in Torockó, Transylvania,
Romania. The location is a world heritage site, known as the ‘land where the sun rises twice’
because of the large ‘Rock of the Szeklers’ which dominates the area. The pictures of famous
Unitarians include Balázs Orbán, Samuel Morse, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Ellery Channing,
Horace Greeley, Pákey Lajos, Brassai Sámuel, Berde Áron and Henry Wordsworth Longfellow.
JuneSt John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta is considered to be one of the finest examples of high Baroque
architecture in Europe. Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it was built by the Order of St John
between 1572 and 1577. The interior was redecorated by Mattia Pretti and features carved stone
walls and a painted vaulted ceiling. By selectively positioning the figures on the ceiling next to the
columns, Pretti gives the illusion that they are statues rather than paintings. The marble floor is
made up of the tombs of over 400 Knights of the Order.
JulyThe Macedonian village of Radožda on Lake Ohrid is the last village before the Albanian border.
Above the village in the Jablanica mountains is the church of Saint Michael Archangel, built in a
natural cave during the thirteenth century. It is dedicated to the military commander of the
Bodiless Army - the Archangel Michael.
AugustBölön Unitarian Church in Transylvania, central Romania, was built on the site of a fifteenth-century
church dedicated to Saint Catherine which was destroyed by fire in 1720. The current church
incorporates part of a seventeenth-century fortress and was rebuilt in 1894.
SeptemberThe image of the dandelion seed head can be interpreted in many ways, explains Graham
Bonham who created the focus-stacked composite image. “It could symbolize transience - the
temporariness of existence: there one moment and blown away the next. Alternatively, it could
represent fecundity - one bloom produces hundreds of potential new lives - or be about
underappreciated beauty: even pesky ‘weeds’, which many people use ‘chemical weapons’
against (to the detriment of the environment), have beautiful aspects.”
OctoberThe Methodist chapel was built in 1811 by Wesleyan Methodists in the hamlet of Barber Booth,
Edale in Derbyshire. The village of Edale grew out of the collection of shepherds' shelters or 'booths'
in what are now the hamlets of Upper Booth, Barber Booth and Nether Booth. Methodism arrived
in the area during the late eighteenth century, possibly coinciding with the growing population
who sought work in the cotton mill which was built in Edale in 1795 by Nicholas Cresswell. Edale
is a haven for walkers and lies at the beginning of the 267 mile Pennine Way footpath.
