Facts about town’s water consumptionToo often has Council tried to discredit

me as being confused.A recent article in the Courier —

Frontier Road bore readied for TA waterproduction — quoted Barry Bergin assaying ‘Last week alone Te Awamutu used92 million litres of water and, for the districtas a whole, we saw consumption rise to 226million litres’.

It would imply that Te Awamutu resi-dents are consuming 13.1 million litres aday. With the Fonterra component at 40 percent of Te Awamutu’s water demand, theywould consume 7.9 million litres a day.

This statement alone is full of factualinaccuracy, highlighting Council staff havetheir heads in the sky whilst sitting behindtheir protective walls to their ivory tower, and the Courier has allowed this travesty totranspire without checking the facts.

Let’s breakdown the facts:• 257 litres/head/day (WDC — The Water

Story — Part 1; Lorriane Kendrick).• Te Awamutu population; 10,305 (2013

Census), but about 14,000 can be claimed(Wikipedia).

• On an average day 14,000 peopleconsume 3.6 million litres of water.

Compared with the above facts, Mr

Bergin’s statement implies that Te Awa-mutu residents are consuming an increaseof 220 per cent of average daily waterconsumption — unfathomable.

One could accept that a conservativeincrease of 20 — 25 per cent was acceptableover the summer period, not 220 per cent.

This is only used as a fear tactic to justifytheir undemocratic plans to unroll theunwanted meters and establishment of aCCO.

If there was any validity to Mr Bergin’scomments then:

• Level 4 Water Restrictions would havebeen immediately put in place, comparedwith current Level 2 restrictions.

• It is evident water bores will not solvethe problem.

Why does Council have to resort to lies? Why can’t elected Councillor’s see what’s

in front of them? Why can’t the Courier see the truth?

HAYDEN WOODSEditor’s note: Mr Woods is convincedCouncil staff and elected representatives arehabitual liars and that this publication iscommitted to supporting those lies. The only reasonable point the letter makes isthat more information about water use may

benefit the public.Using the same ‘fact finding’ method MrWoods employs — the internet — it is easy tosee from Council’s own website that Councilextracts and supplies 26.4 million litres ofwater per day, or 184 million litres per week.I’m sure people would realise that is anaverage figure, and that it would varyaccording to a number of factors — so 226million litres in a week is within the 20 — 25per cent range Mr Woods would accept. The same website says in relation tohousehold use, we use 257 litres/head/day —again an average over a year. The population of Te Awamutu, whichincludes Pirongia and Kihikihi, is about12,000 according to latest figures.One-third of water at present is used andpaid for by Fonterra and the remaining two-thirds is attributed to householders, com-mercial premises, paid bulk water sales andunauthorised losses.Based on the peak 92 million litres use, orabout 13.1 million litres per day, Fonterraused 4.4 million litres, householders used3.08 million litres and 5.6 million litres isused by businesses, commercial premises orvia bulk water sales.Hopefully this assists the public.

Stance praisedI am responding to Vern Wilson’s comment in

Tuesday’s edition. It is remarkable and highly appreciated that someone

from the local government body to share that TPPA maynot be the best for the citizens of this country, especiallywhen the Key government is keeping low profile on theimpacts of this trade deal could have on New Zealanders.

It encourages me, my family and many othersindividuals within the community that we are not alonein these protests against TPPA and that we are notwrong in fighting for our future and the cominggenerations.

SRI GOVINDARAJU

Supply solution obviousThe most important way for any

town to increase is a good watersupply.

The Regional Council are dictat-ing as to how much water can betaken from the stream at Pirongia,it is now less than it used to be.

To spend thousands on drillingbores is just a poor stop gapmeasure.

The obvious solution is a largepipe over to the Waikato Riverwhere plenty of water flows out tosea.

It might cost a lot now, butwould be cheap in the long run andallow Te Awamutu to prosper.

Let’s just hope our presentCouncil has enough foresight tojust do it and not say we can’t affordit, as it will never be cheaper in thefuture.

Even sporting grounds, eventscentres and industry need a goodwater supply to grow.

So, let’s see some positive actionWaipa District Council.

The Wotton familywill battle it out againstthe Pearce family ofTauranga and theRoughans from Gore forDIY supremacy in WestAuckland.

Parents are investingtheir money to purchasethe house, but the chil-dren are in charge thisyear.

Each team will beshown renovating overeight weeks in a bid toadd the most value totheir property.

The team with thebiggest profit at auctionalso pockets $100,000prizemoney.

The Wottons say theychose their homebecause it had goodtransport links.

“There were alsosupermarkets and shop-ping centres close by.But really the biggestfactor in buying a housein Auckland is price,”says Rebecca.

The family lookedfrom Pt Chevalier toTitirangi before settlingon a 1960s house in Hen-derson.

Retired builderFrank Loomb says whenhis grand-daughterasked him to be part ofthe team he told her atalmost 82 he was “tooold”.

But after some con-vincing he joined theteam, along with hiswife Coral, the ‘cook,

“We started about7.30 in the morning anddidn’t f inish unti laround nine at night.

“Coral and I werestaying off-site, so we

Mr Loomb says get-ting all the work done,in a short time frame, proved to be a bit frus-trating at times.

“We were frequentlystopped to do interviewsand there were oftentwo or three takes.

“Working with acamera in your face isalso a little strange.

“But overall it was agreat experience and

we’re really pleasedwith the end result.

“We’ll just have towait and see what hap-pens at the auction.”

Weight loss at Body BuzzADVERTISEMENT

Rose lost 46 kg the Body Buzz way

“Everyone has a bad photo that they don’t wantanyone else to see. The photo above on the left wastaken in Christchurch. I had just bought a new top andI felt pretty cool in it because I was still blind to the factthat I was a big person. I remember my niece sayinghow big I looked in comparison to my other sisters sowhen I was back in Te Awamutu I took a good look atthe photos. That’s when I first realised I was overweight.I walked into Body Buzz and joined. I didn’t reallybelieve I could lose weight but the machines made mefeel good so if I lost some weight that would be a bonus. At the time I had no idea that a year later it would bemy “before” photo”

Now when I look back at my old photos I wonder whatthe heck I was thinking. What on earth was I doing tomy health? I would probably be diabetic by now.

“Not so long ago large woman had to browse themenswear section to find clothes that were big enoughfor them. Then the Warehouse started selling largerclothes which made shopping easy. I would just walkin and grab the biggest size they had. I didn’t bothertrying it on because I knew it would fit. Now that I amsize 14 there are lots of different styles to choose fromand as I have always been overweight I have no ideawhat suits me and what doesn’t. Shopping for clothesis a whole new experience for me.

“The reason Body Buzz works so well for weight lossis because of the system. If you follow the educationand support system Marty has set up you will succeed.

If you find yourself identifying with Rose and you toowant to look and feel great again then it’s time to takeaction and become part of the community at Body Buzz.

Ethics on Valentine’s DayAs the collective population

prepares for St Valentine’s Day,rape has been in the news lately.

Some want it legalised on pri-vate property. Oh how youth iswasted on the young.

Perhaps these ill-consideringpeople mean is they think itshould be legal in a persons home?

In any event this concept is bad. With recent news related to ani-mal cruelty, it happens tohundreds of cows in New Zealand. Some of your correspondentsmake exceptions for farm-relatedviolence of various kinds.

So what are these people get-ting up to on Valentine’s Day?

Are the gifts that will be given

genuine expressions of love with-out obligation or they in realitygiven in expectation of somethingmore than friendship?

Can people be bought ormanipulated? Is falling in love awise thing to do?

Clearly there are ethics andprotocols that must be observed.

One such consideration shouldbe that people consider the widerimplications of breeding and mateselection. Perhaps readers shouldtake a look in the mirror first andbe genuinely critical of what theysee before they visit the chemist, card shop or the jeweller.

Do they really have the traitsand decision-making abilities that

should be passed on to a newgeneration who will have atougher time making their way inthe world?

Is it fair to conceal your trueviolent, odorous self, your lack offinancial resources, your poordress sense and your wreck of acar by hiring a suit and limousineto court a local ‘Doris’.

In summary, think before youbreed.

A family friend, Harry who hasnearly 60 years of marriage on himnow, once told me “A bachelor's’slife is a pretty miserable one, Jim.”

But one where nobody getshurt.

JAMES PARLANE

Monthly billing ashock for rubbish

I was shocked to readabout Envirowaste’schange from annual tomonthly direct debiting. But I got a shock when Igot a letter that after-noon telling me that theonly payment option wasmonthly direct debiting.

So I rang them to askwhy the change as I hadbeen paying annually forthree years, with nodramas.

But I was in for an-other shock when I rangthem. I was rudely toldthat the only option isgoing to be monthly di-rect debiting.

So I tried to say that Ididn’t like that option, but was rudely told that Ihave to accept the wayit’s going to be paid.

Firstly, I don’t like beingtold how to pay my bills, especially by a companythat provides a service.

So when customerservice rep told me that’sthe way it’s going to bedone, I told her thatwhen my contract is dueto be renewed come andget the bin as I will belooking elsewhere to geta wheelie bin.

It didn’t take too longto find another, and theytold me that they actu-ally prefer annualpayments. So I haveagreed to get them toprovide me with awheelie bin to be paidannually once myEnvirowaste contracthas ended.

Crash a monthon old layout

I live on a roadexiting SH3 between TeAwamutu and Hamilton.

I totally disagree withFrans van Schie on thismatter. The road shouldnever have been turnedinto a four-lane high-way.

Four-lane highwaysare to move traffic asquickly as possible fromone main centre to an-other. Roads must bepurposely built for this.

Motorways or thenew expressway whichbypasses Cambridge area suggestion.

But an existing roadwhich has homes withdriveways and busi-nesses and smaller roads

leading off them are notsuitable. The road I liveon, had, I am told by thepanelbeater who col-lected the car after ouraccident, at least oneaccident each month.

I can only say I amdelighted with thechange in this road and Ifeel much safer whentravelling on it and morewhen turning right intoour road which now hasa designated area to al-low cars to wait until theopposite side of the roadis clear. Much, muchsafer.

My one concern is thespeed at which somevehicles travel.ARLENE WHEATLEY

I am French. I live nearArmentieres in the North ofFrance. In Armentieresthere is an important mili-tary cemetery of the FirstWorld War, the ‘BonjeanCemetery’.

Through an associationI sponsor five graves of thiscemetery. It means that Ipromised to place poppieson these graves severaltimes each year.

One of them is the grave ofWilliam Moon Alexander. This boywas born at Mangapiko, Te Awa-mutu. He was killed in action onJuly 14, 1916. He was a private(number 8/2807) of the 1st Brigade— Otago Regiment. He was admit-ted as Barrister and Solicitor in1914.

I could not find more detailsabout this soldier and his family.

So I would be very happy to getmore information, perhaps fromlocal archives or registry service. The members of my associationwould be interested too.

Can anybody help me?Thousand of thanksAnita Creteur

Bypass announcementgood news for region

The year is well underwayand many of us are nowback at work. I’m looking

forward to another busy year andam positive it will be anotherfantastic year in Taranaki-KingCountry (TKC).

Infrastructure supports muchof our daily lives – it’s the roads wedrive on, the schools our childrenlearn in and it delivers ourelectricity and water. It is a keydriver of the economy, and publicservices. And it creates jobs andoffers learning opportunities.

Driving over Mt Messengerand through the Awakino GorgeTunnel is a drive which I doregularly, to get from top to bottomof my electorate. I was thrilled bythe announcement of two new

bypasses here.I was in the middle of the King

Country as the announcementwas made, and business ownersand locals I spoke to havewelcomed the news.

These two bypasses, as wellas added safety enhancementsfor State Highway 3, will open upthe entire West Coast as a link tothe rest of the Upper North Island. This will undoubtedly increasetourism, economic productivity, and the flow of goods andservices.

The atmosphere of excitementin Taranaki-King Country sincehearing this announcement hasendorsed the decision. This ishuge for our community and allthose who use the road, and we

eagerly look forward toconstruction starting within thenext two years.

I would like to congratulate theindividuals in TKC who gainedhonours in the 2016 New Year’sHonours List.

A huge congratulations toDavid Fagan, appointed as KnightCompanion of the New ZealandOrder of Merit for services toshearing; Jim Barker, appointedas an Officer of the New ZealandOrder of Merit for services to thetransport industry andphilanthropy; David Allerton, appointed a Queen’s ServiceMedal for services to the NewZealand Fire Service and sailing, and Kataraina Hodge, appointeda Queen’s Service Medal for

services to Maori.I would like to extend my warm

congratulations to these fourremarkable citizens for theirservices to both their industry andcommunity.

I am confident this year will befull of success in our schools, volunteer organisations, community groups, small andlarge businesses, and innovativeenterprises.

After recharging the batteriesI’m heading into the 2016Parliamentary year focused, energised, and full of ideas tokeep New Zealand and TKCmoving ahead.

I look forward to seeing youout and about in TKC over thecoming year.

Asphalt for footpathAfter an inspection and

discussion between Counciland contractors, a changehas been made to the foot-path repair and renewalunderway in the CBD.

Service delivery groupmanager Barry Bergin saysin Arawata Street the de-cision was made to asphaltthe section from Postie + toGeorge Street due to verticaldrop from the footpath andthe RD1 yard as there is noedge restraint to hold paversin place.

The asphalt work hasalready taken place, and at

the same time, a temporaryemulsion layer was laid toseal the loose metal in frontof Postie + until paving isunderway.

There could be a change ofland use in the former RD1yard that might affect thefootpath in the future.

Pavers for the remainderof Arawata Street, SloaneStreet and Roche Street, where renewal work hasalready started, are cur-rently being manufactured.

Laying of the pavers isexpected to begin from nextweek.

BY COLIN THORSEN

New Zealand suffered a rareloss in the Rosetown HoldenInternational Polo Test at Kihi-kihi on Saturday — beaten 13-10by a slick Capill del Senor profes-sional team from Argentina.

Another huge crowd weretreated to a cracking, seriouslygood game at Paul Kay’s NgaRakau ground.

The Argentinians fired on allcylinders from the outset andnever let up. Leading 8-6 athalftime, they increased theiradvantage to 11-7 winning thefourth chukka 3-1.

Despite adapting better in thesecond half, winning the fifth

chukka 3-2 and drawing the laststanza 1-1, the Kiwis were alwaysplaying catch-up.

Former New Zealand interna-tional Simon Keyte said thetourists showed the benefits ofcoming out of very high levelpolo for the last couple ofmonths.

“New Zealand didn’t have thatluxury, having to make do withclub polo to get into shape forinternational duty.

“The two members of the NewZealand team who do competeregularly overseas, ThomasHunt and JP Clarkin, adaptedmore quickly to the speed of theopposition than their team-mates.”

Clarkin, New Zealand’s longserving captain, was gracious indefeat.

“We got better as the gameprogressed but the visitors weredeserving victors. They hadclearly the better allround teamgame.

“They are lucky to have sucha strong playing group who get toplay at this level week in andweek out.”

New Zealand fielded twointernational rookies, one capJames Wood at No. 1 and GlennSherriff on debut at No. 2.

“It was good to get the newfaces some internationalexposure, we cannot rely on theold guard for ever,” said Clarkin.

“It was a real eye-opener forJimmy and Glenn.

“They improved throughoutthe game and it was a steppingstone for next time.”

Match MVP went to Patrick(Paco) O’Dwyer, the 21-year-oldCapilla del Senor No. 1.

Born and bred in Argentina,O’Dwyer knew only too wellwhat his team were up against onSaturday, having won the SavileCup in New Zealand in 2013playing for Mystery Creek.

Capilla del Senor’s No. 2 JuanBritos was another stand out, especially in the first half, scor-ing a couple of sensational goals.

O’Dwyer also took out cham-pion pony on Captain Morgan,

owned by Chris and Dione Jonesof Clevedon.

The Argentinians were veryhappy with their borrowedhorses, the majority supplied bythe Kihikihi club.

New Zealand have fashioned afantastic record at Kihikihi inrecent years, beating a star-studded World Team 11-10 (2011),Australia 10-9 (2012) to retain theAustralasian Cup, South Africa11-10 (2013), 8-7 (2014) and England9-8 (2015).

Last year’s win over Englandwas in fact the fourth out of fivewins over that country.

South Island were decisivevictors over their North Islandcounterparts in the curtainraiser.
