CLHP continues to thrive and the collection is being knocked into shape by a great teamof volunteers. The archive is open to visitors and we would encourage anyone who would
like to know more about the village and its history to come along to the regular meetings
or drop by on one of the Open Days to find out!
www.couslandsmiddy.co.uk for open days. Contact: [email protected]
or 663 2730.
The Lime Hutches at the West End
of the village are important
artefacts from the history of the lime
-working industry in the village and
as such are not suitable to be used
as play equipment. They are about
to be re-furbished and whilst not
dangerous it is NOT appropriate or
particularly safe for children to be
climbing on top of them. The
history group and other villagers
would appreciate this message being
relayed to the kids of the village. We
want to preserve them (and the
children!) Thank you CLHP.
Lime Hutches Conservation
Cousland Local History Project
Preserving our Heritage!
A new interpretation panel is in production for the area but we have no volunteers yet
for the conservation of the Hutches themselves, they need a lick of paint! If anyone can
spare some time over the summer to help conserve them please contact Sheena as
above. If they go another winter they will become a major project…………….

Majority Group Away Day 14th May
Another successful and enjoyable Away Day trip to
Finlaystone House. Home of the
Chief of the MacMillan Clan, George
MacMillan, and his family. We had a
personal tour of the house conducted
by George MacMillan, his son Arthur
and daughter in law Barbara.
Next stop was Fyne Ales near Inveraray where a number of the party re-
acquainted with Peggy Delap. We had
an enjoyable lunch in the sun in the
courtyard, then a Brewery tour with beer
tasting. The rest of the party went on to
the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Garden
Centre, where there also happened to
be a Food Festival that day.
Next stop was Hill House, Helensburgh
to tour the creation of RennieMackintosh for Glasgow Publisher
George Blackie.
Winnock Hotel, Drymen for dinner.
Excellent meal, however we were
nearly DRY MEN because they had
run out of real ale on the Friday.
Home to Cousland, tired but happy
by 10pm Thank you Ken for
organising a great day..
Finlaystone HouseCRAPS = Cousland Real Ale and
POETRY Society
One of our number thanked our host
at Finlaystone House in verse, and
the response was equally poetic.
By agreement, for this year’s journey,
destination Fyne Ales Brewery,
it was arranged to pause our ride
at Finlaystone beside the Clyde.
There, the Macmillan family
recounted their family’s history
and provided hospitality,
before setting our party free to roam
in the grounds and tho’ their home.
Thus unfettered, each was free
to ‘personalise’ their memory.
For me, ‘twas the vista over Clyde
where the family’s shipping plied;
marble pillars in Burnet’s creation;
and the Argyles’ Aden tribute stone;
the library stock with Noth’s and
Bright’s
conflicting accounts of the Israelites;castellated hedge; ancient yew tree;
Dear Ken and Paul
And Crappers all,
We much enjoyed your visit
From Cousland toun
To Finlaystone
is no small journey, is it?
And yet you got
Here on the dot
A triumph of logistics
Did your whole trip
Contrive to keep
In line with such statistics?
We thank you all,
And specially Paul,
For such a ‘Thank you’ letter.
From visitors here
From far and near
We’ve never had a better.
George MacMillan
and – not least – the antique lavatory
So visit over, for one and all,
there were pleasant memories to re-
call
of the morning at Finlaystone,
with our welcoming hosts MacMillan.

Cousland Smiddy Trust
Cousland Smiddy Trust andSean Cockburn made their own
contribution to the new Botanic
Cottage in the Royal Botanic
Gardens of Edinburgh by
gifting a boot scraper which
was crafted at the forge in the
smiddy.
“During the archaeological
investigations on the Botanic
Cottage site in Leith Walk, a
stone was uncovered, with two
holes which had clearly
contained metal shafts. The
archaeologist’s conclusion was
that this may have been the
fixing of a boot scraper, set
outside the cottage for the
gardeners to clean their
boots on.
Cousland Smiddy Trust,
owners of Cousland
Smiddy, thought that to re-
create that boot scraper in
the forge of the 300 year old
smiddy, might be a fitting
way to represent a tradethat would have been a
traditional craft used in the
original building …… so
here it is, our gift to the
gardeners at Inverleith:
long may it clean your
boots!”
We are very proud to havecontributed to such an
historical and important
project.
Some of the furniture in the
Gardeners’ Cottage was
produced by Jo Black at
Airfield workshops, so
Cousland is well
represented.
Contact Sean (07586 54 04
34) if you need any hand-
crafted metal item.
He’s also always got wee
items in stock (key rings,
bottle openers, tea light
holders etc) that would
make unique gifts.

Whole School Visit to
Local Heritage
Attraction
On 31 May and 2 June, every pupil in
Tynewater Primary School had the oppor-
tunity to visit Cousland Smiddy as part of a
new, annual competition, designed to en-
courage our youngsters to learn about and
value their local heritage.
The Smiddy Trust devised the competition
in partnership with the school and have
donated the Cousland Smiddy Trust Tyne-
water Heritage Trophy to be presented
annually to the competition winner. The
trophy was mostly hand-crafted locally by
Douglas Bolton and Sean Cockburn (see
photo).
The competition links local heritage and
the Arts. It involves young people visiting
a local heritage site and drawing inspira-
tion from the experience to produce their
entry.
This is the first year of the competition and
the school chose to visit Cousland Smiddy
and decided that the competition entry
would be a photograph.
Next year they’ll visit a different heritage
site and the competition entry might be a
drawing or a poem or a song or a play or
... who knows? The competition is pur-posely flexible and allows the school to
best meet the learning needs of the young
people.
All the volunteers who helped to welcome
the young people thought it was fantastic
to see such enthusiastic visitors. We’re
told a few youngsters now fancy a career
in blacksmithing!
We look forward to judging this year’s
competition entries and presenting the
trophy to the winner at a ceremony in the
school at the end of the summer term.
BBC interest in Cousland Smiddy
We featured on BBC Out of Doors radio programme following a visit by Mark Stephen,
who interviewed Sheena, Brian and Sean about the smiddy and its continuing life as a
blacksmiths’ shop.
We have also just received a copy of the published new issue of BBC Who Do You Think
You Are magazine, July 2016 issue, in newsagents soon – complete with a full page on
Cousland Smiddy, History Project and Heritage Hub, written following an interview with
Sheena Irving. Circulation of 51,000!

Thanks to our volunteers
As you can see in the picture, the new
drains and hard landscaping in front of
the smiddy and workshop are nearly
completed and already the effect has
been transformational. No more flooding
in heavy rain and no more muddy feet for
Sean, the blacksmith. We’re really
pleased with the result and our recent
visitors have commented positively.
We’d like to thank everyone who helped
us. We could not have achieved such a
good outcome without your support. If you’d like to help out with future
projects or do a short spell of duty on our
Open Days, please get in touch with
