Courtside May 2011 From the Editor….. Hellooooo to all you netball enthusiasts. Well we have now come to the end of another netball season. It’s great to see all those New Year’s resolutions coming into play, as it looks like getting fit by playing netball was a popular resolution. So keep up the enthusiasm and encourage any new faces in town to come along on a Tuesday night when we start up again in August. And remember to spread my motto: “It’s all about participation and at the end of the day, netball is the winner” Bec Hamer - ED Club Championships: May 28, 2011 What a day it was!!!!!! A fabulous way to end our netball season with an energetic and competitive game that ended in a draw!!!! Everyone arrived to the court ready to be decked out in their brand spanking new uniforms. With our new club banners all on display and our new uniforms, the girls all felt as if the spirit of the club was being lifted to a higher level and everyone felt ready to add a bit of competitive spirit to the mix. As there were so many players on each team, the 60 minute game was divided up into 6 x 10 minute sets, so that the subs could change over with shorter rest time. The Fireflies took advantage of this and were able to have fresh legs on every set due to their team of 15 players. The Dragons were showing their usual confidence and in the first two quarters Yani and Briged in attack were proving that the Dragons would be unbeatable yet again. However, the Fireflies were able to come back by 7 goals in the 5 th set to be in the lead by 2 goals. Unfortunately super star goal attack for the Dragons “Yani” had a tragic fall that took her out of the game and she was supporting her team from the sidelines with an ice pack on her cheek. It must have been the secret training session the fireflies had during the week over in Seminyak, because by the 4 th and 5 th sets they were coming together as a team and giving the Dragons a run for their money. In the end with seconds to go, the final goal was scored and it was a draw with 34 goals each……………………….. We have never experienced a draw before and people didn’t know what to do – Bec was worried that she didn’t print out enough certificates for a draw. But at the end of the day we decided that in the spirit of the game of netball – it was best to leave it as a draw, so that way both teams can be winners.

Club Championships: May 28, 2011 What a day it was!!!!!! A fabulous way to end our netball season with an energetic and competitive game that ended in a draw!!!! Everyone arrived to the court ready to be decked out in their brand spanking new uniforms. As there were so many players on each team, the 60 minute game was divided up into 6 x 10 minute sets, so that the subs could change over with shorter rest time. The Fireflies took

It is great to see some old Flames coming back and giving the dad’s a turn to babysit on a Tuesday night and at the Club Championships………… A big thank you to Marian who organised the “Kids Club” activities during the Club Championships. It was great to see so many families coming out to see what the Bali Flames are all about.

Club Championship Dinner & Presentation Night

After a fabulous day of sweating it out on the court, it was time to let our hair down and enjoy a few drinks and fabulous food before we all set off on holidays. Woroeng Bonita in

Seminyak was all decked out with the club banners around the place and 24 players, family and friends came along for the night. After dinner was served and the Bali Flames cake was eaten, Bec presented some of the players with the newly created annual Bali Flames Annual awards. A big thank you to some of our members who donated awards for the night. You were very kind

and generous with your sponsorship; Wendy from Kevala Ceramics, Jacky from Echo Beach, Georgia from Glo Spa and Nat from Mundaka Creations. After the awards were given, Bella had organized a special treat with a “Baliwood” drag show. It was definitely a highlight of the night where all the girls wanted

to

have their photos taken with the performers at the end of the night.

Netball isn’t for a bunch of

Aussies anymore.

The Bali Flames netball club is now going from strength to strength. It was only a few years ago that a few aussie girls were throwing a netball into some bins that they used as goals. The 2011 season has seen a varied mixture of people come along to see what this strange game is all about. It is great to see so many nationalities participating. We can now say that netball in Bali has reached a new international level.

When do we cancel netball?      Pam always sends out an email by Sunday night or Monday morning to see who is available to play on the upcoming Tuesday night. Please respond back to Pam with a yes or no and then depending on the numbers, a decision to play a game will be made – this will be confirmed by email on the Tuesday morning, if not earlier.

Bali Flames around the world

“Flaming it around the world”. Bec needs happy snaps from all the Flames wherever they may be on this planet, to email her a shot of you in your new and now famous playing shirt with a landmark, icon, person etc in the background.

How and where did the Bali Flames form?

History: The Bali Flames Netball Club was founded by a few expat girls desperate for some regular exercise and social contact in the island of the Gods. In the early days, Flames players were recruited from within the ranks of the wives, girlfriends and friends of the Bali Gecko’s Football Club. Back then improvisation was also the name of the game. Netball hoops were non-existent so we made do with using good old-fashioned bins as our goals!

However, being the ‘small village’ that Bali is, word of the ‘Flames’ soon spread around town. Our membership started to grow and ‘Flames’ from all nationalities and walks of life started signing up. We even managed to

custom make our own set of netball posts and find a regular venue to hold our games. What has stayed true throughout the growth of the club has been its ‘can do spirit’. The Bali Flames Netball Club welcomes everyone (male and female) no matter how skilled or new to netball they are. As our newsletter editor Rebecca Hamer often says: ‘it’s all about participation!’ As well as giving people a chance to play sport, it offers a place to meet new people and enjoy the social side of being in a club. In the past years that we have been up and running, we have continued to enjoy our regular Tuesday night matches, our tournaments and of course the tours.

Page 7: Courtside May 2011

From our early days of being a batik clad group that managed to squeeze in the odd netball game, we will soon be seen decked out in our newly designed uniform and continue to compete on the S.E. Asia netball circuit. The Jakarta Kangarudas and the Bali Flames have enjoyed a friendly and competitively rivalry since the first match in June 2002. As with most of the Bali matches the pre - match massages and spa treatments, retail therapy, margaritas, and inevitable next morning migration to Ku De Ta for brunch, makes for a great weekend away for the Kangarudas and the hustle and bustle of Jakarta.
