COURSE POLICIES:

1. The course is a mixed mode course that consists of classroom sessions and online sessions.

2. Student conferences are made by appointment. These conferences are not a substitute for class attendance. Please arrange for another student to take notes for you if you must miss a classroom session.

3. Students are encouraged to contact me via email. I check email frequently and it is the most expedient way to get an answer to your question.

4. Class participation is important and accounts for a significant percentage of your grade. Class participation is accomplished by attending classroom and online sessions, reading the assigned reading prior to the first day the reading is due, participating in the session as described in the class participation section.

5. All written assignments are to be posted in the Digital Drop box as MS Word files. Please verify that the file extension of your document is .doc. If your computer does not have MS Word you will need to submit the assignment from a computer in the SJSU computer lab or commercial business that has such a computer. MS Works, Word perfect and Apple documents will not be accepted. Assignments must be posted in the course website and are not accepted by email. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Help Desk and resolve any problems with posting assignments to the Digital Drop Box.

6. All written papers for classes will be scholarly and use the APA Manual, (4th edition).

Scholarly class papers will include the following parts: Title page Body of paper References Appendices (optional, only when applicable)

Class papers do not include the following (unless specifically requested by the faculty person):

Running head Table of contents Signature page Acknowledgement page List of tables List of figures Abstract

7. Student work is to be edited and consistent with the page limits of the assignments. Page limits do not include the cover (title) page or references list. The instructor does not read pages of the assignment that goes beyond the page limit.

Page 4: COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING METHOD:€¦  · Web viewMS Works, Word perfect and Apple documents will not be accepted. Assignments must be posted in the course website and are

Syllabus NURS 246 Fall, 2005

8. Feedback is given via the Digital Drop Box. Grades and feedback are not given via email or telephone.

9. Due dates are noted on the calendar below. Reading and assignments are due by the end of day PST on the due date. One point per day will be deducted for late submission of assignments; assignments will NOT be accepted 5 working days or later than the due date. Early submission of assignments is encouraged. Incompletes are not given for the course.

10. Make a copy of all assignments, and feedback to save in case there is some question about your performance. You are responsible for keeping track of your performance throughout the course.

11. Since group projects are outcome-based, all members of your group will generally earn the same grade. I do, however, reserve the right to report different grades for group members if I identify a substantial imbalance in the level of effort.

TEACHING STRATEGIES:

The course will be taught as a seminar. The emphasis will be on exploring how the readings apply to modern organizations and healthcare in which the class participants have experiences. Extensive reading is expected so that the classroom discussion will be meaningful. Therefore, it is essential that each student read and think about each assignment before class, attend class regularly, and actively participate* in discussions. Students will also make a presentation to the class based on a group project, complete structured written assignments, and complete a take home Final examination.

Use your creativity, professional experience, course materials, and knowledge from prior graduate courses to develop the type of organization you are proposing.

Each group is to assume that their health care organization is competing for the funds and approval to establish the organization and deliver the health care service. Base your proposal on the possible health care needs for a county of 1,500,000 with an ethnically
