A message from the Principal2020 has been a very unusual and difficult year for us all and, as a college, we have had to adapt and use our resourcefulness to operate very differently.

2 www.citycollegepeterborough.ac.uk

In March, when the lockdown started, we were determined to keep as many people as possible learning and, within a few short weeks, 100% of our adult qualification courses, as well as other programmes, were quickly taken online so that our students did not miss out. In some cases, we were also able to provide those that did not have computers with equipment so that they could still complete their learning programmes. I have to commend and pay special tribute to our teaching staff, who not only very quickly learnt how to deliver learning in this new way but who also put the welfare of the students at the forefront of what they did, making support calls and checking in on our students. I also want to thank our support staff who have been doing what is needed to keep the college running and supporting people who are working from home, with special thanks to our IT team.Alongside still providing learning during the pandemic, we also had a desire to support our City and many of our team have achieved some amazing things, showing versatility, innovation, and commitment. Alongside the day job, we have been able to:• help the homeless• feed the isolated and vulnerable• help parents to support their children’s learning• provide and deliver craft packs to shielding and

other vulnerable people • support the health and care sector with the

significant challenges they’ve been facingI am so proud to be part of such an amazing team of people. So now, as we move into post covid-19 recovery, learning a new skill is even more important, not only for wellbeing but as one of the greatest investments that people can make for their future and that of their families and communities.

At City College Peterborough, we are committed to supporting your personal development and enhancing your learning experience to help you improve your work and career prospects, personal development and general wellbeing. I hope that you will find something in the course guide that appeals to you. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please contact me via email: [email protected] and let me know what you would like us to consider offering for the future.I look forward to seeing you in the forthcoming academic year and hope you enjoy your chosen course(s) with us.

Julie Reid – Art Julie is an established fine artist with a strong focus on drawing and collage. She works in her garden studio in north Cambridgeshire from drawings she makes from her observations of the natural world whilst walking in woodlands and the landscape both locally, in France and N.E. Spain. We are excited that Julie has decided to join us recently at the college to share her expertise and passion for this subject with our learners.

Sue Burgess – Dressmaking & Crafts Sue has taught for 15 years but has been sewing from the age of 5 years old. She started making clothes for her dolls before she started school, where Sue developed her skills and interest in dressmaking, soft furnishing and crafting.

Jonathan Meyer – Pottery Jonty graduated from Birmingham School of Art with a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art and has been teaching sculpture and pottery for the last 20 years to adults, 4 of which have been here at City College Peterborough.

Tony Nero – Art Teaching our painting courses, Tony originally trained as a graphic designer working in the music industry producing record sleeves and printed materials for a period that exceeded 20 years. Almost half of this time he spent managing his own graphic studio. Tony’s work is very diverse in subject matter and he works in a variety of mediums such as pencils, charcoal, pastels, oils and watercolour. The majority of his art is self-taught, but he also undertook some formal fine arts training at the London Guildhall University.

Sue Shields – Printmaking Sue is a mixed media artist based in Peterborough. Her disciplines include lino-printing, oil painting, wood carving, etching and filmmaking. Her work focuses on identifying lost local histories and stories marginalised by the mistaken belief that they are provincial or obscure. Using narratives taken from personal interviews, independent research and archives, Sue’s work looks to mend lost affinities between a place and its people. The relationships between place, people and land that her work creates leads to a greater understanding and appreciation of our environment within a modern context.

18 www.citycollegepeterborough.ac.uk

What is a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan? The Government has introduced 19+ Advanced Learning Loans to help learners aged 19 and over in further education pay the college or training organisation fee. Getting a loan doesn’t depend on your household income and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £26,725 a year. Once you earn over this amount, you pay back 9% of the earnings you receive above this figure.

What are my repayments likely to be? That depends on how much you earn. Visit www.studentloans.co.uk to see how monthly payments relate to earnings. REMEMBER: Loan repayments only start when you are earning over £26,725 per year (but you can make voluntary repayments before then). Interest rates can vary up to 3%.

Can the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan be written off or cancelled?Normally, any outstanding loan you have will be written off 30 years after it becomes eligible to be repaid. If you receive a disability-related benefit and are permanently unfit for work, it will be cancelled.

Who is eligible for a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan?To be eligible for the loan you must be:• 19 or older on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age limit).• living in the UK on the first day of your course, and have lived in the UK or an EU country or a dependent

territory of the UK and EU for 3 years immediately before starting your course• studying in the UK on a level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification that is eligible for a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan.

Is there an upper age limit? There is no upper age limit in order to apply for a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan.

Is there a maximum amount of loan available?Yes, depending on the qualification. If you wish to take out a smaller amount (not less than £300) and fund the rest yourself, you are able to do this.

Is the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan available to students with existing qualifications?Yes, previous qualifications that learners have achieved do not affect their ability to apply for a loan to gain new qualifications.

What happens next?Once you have been accepted on the course of your choice, you will need to decide whether you wish to pay for your course yourself or apply for a 19+ Advanced Learning Loan. You will need to submit your application together with the offer letter to the Student Loan Company. Please note, once you enrol onto the course of your choice it is your responsibility to make arrangements to pay for the course. If you withdraw from the course for whatever reason, you are still responsible to pay City College Peterborough the amount outstanding.
