Tech Prep in Pennsylvania –
Tech Prep programs combine at least two years of high school education with two
years of post-secondary education to prepare students for technical careers in areas
such as engineering technology, health and human services and
business/information technology. These articulated programs combine a common
core of higher academics in math, science and communications with a specific
field of technical preparation. Tech Prep is a college prep program that leads to an
associate degree, two-year certificate or apprenticeship. Tech Prep students will be
technically and academically prepared to join the workforce or continue their
education towards a baccalaureate degree.
Tech Prep certification is available in the following programs for students who
meet the Tech Prep requirements: Computer Networking and Security, Computer
Programming, Allied Health, Protective Services, Drafting and Design,
Electronics, Computerized Tool Technology, Welding, and Automotive
Technology.

American Welding Society – AWS
The American Welding Society (AWS) was formed in 1919 to advance the science, technology and application of welding. Participation in a student chapter can provide valuable experience for career and personal development for members. AWS is recognized as the leading technical organization in the United States devoted to the advancement and interest of welding, joining and cutting processes.
DECA – An Association of Marketing Students DECA enhances marketing, management and entrepreneurship education. Students develop skills and competencies for careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community service. DECA promotes the partnership of education and business. DECA promotes leadership opportunities, competitive events and achievement/recognition activities on the local, state and national levels. Students enrolled in the Hotel, Resort & Tourism and Marketing Programs are eligible to join DECA.
National FFA Organization (Agricultural Education) FFA is a co-curricular student organization which is an integral part of agriculture education. FFA enhances the education of students preparing or advancing their careers in production agriculture, products processing, agribusiness, renewable natural resources, agricultural mechanics, horticulture and environmental occupations. FFA promotes leadership opportunities, competitive events and achievement/recognition activities on local, state and national levels. Health Occupations Students of America – HOSA HOSA is a national student organization that provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation and recognition exclusively for secondary, post-secondary, collegiate and adult students enrolled in health occupations education course or instructional programs. HOSA is an integral part of approved health occupation programs. HOSA promotes leadership opportunities, competitive events and achievement/recognition activities on local, state and national levels. The Allied Health and Health Assistant students join HOSA.
National Technical Honor Society – NTHS NTHS is a non-profit, honor organization for students enrolled in occupational and technical programs. The purpose of NTHS is to reward student achievement and to promote service, leadership, honesty, career development, and skilled workmanship. The Building Trades Maintenance Program is an instructional program that prepares individuals
to apply technical knowledge and skills in the maintenance and repair of residential, office,

CONSTRUCTION CLUSTER
CARPENTRY
The Carpentry Program is an instructional program designed to provide students with a
combination of classroom theory and hands-on building experience in residential, commercial,
and industrial construction trades. Students in this program will learn estimating and material
identification. They will also learn the basics of both rough and finish carpentry, including
blueprint reading, the use of power and hand tools, framing techniques, and the installation of
trim and hardware. Carpenters do rough or finish work. Rough work carpenters assemble the
framework. They erect sub floors, partitions, floor joists, and trusses or rafters. Finish carpenters
start their work after the rough carpenters complete their job. They build stairs, lay floors, and
install paneling, tile, doors, trim, cabinets, and windows. Students practice their skill in shop first
and then apply them at the house project.

ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY
The Electrical Technology Program is an instructional program that covers the basics of
alternating and direct current electricity and the means to install, maintain, and service electrical
equipment in a safe and proper manner. Students receive comprehensive instruction on the
National Electrical Code and standard trade practices. In addition, students receive instruction
on tasks such as constructing wiring circuits, installation of cables and raceways, circuit analysis,
and basic wiring procedures. Students are also given the opportunity to pursue advanced training
in motor control circuits and power technology applications. They are also afforded the
opportunity to become certified in Smart Home Technology (home automation). Students receive
practical experience by completing many projects and wiring a house in the school’s housing
project.

The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Program is an instructional program
that combines classroom and practical learning experiences. This course includes the theory and
application of the basic principles involved in the repairing and servicing of heating and cooling
systems. Students develop skills in assembling and installing tubes and pipes, motors,
compressors, control devices, valves, and thermostats while gaining an understanding of
blueprints and schematics related to equipment and systems. Students must be able to diagnose
equipment malfunctions and also be able to read and understand technical reference manuals.

MASONRY
The Masonry Program is an instructional program that combines classroom and practical learning experiences. Bricklayers or brickmasons are crafts persons who construct and repair walls, partitions, arches, fireplaces, chimneys, and other structures from brick, block, concrete, and glazed tile. Instruction in this trade includes learning skills involved in the cutting, chipping, and laying of brick and concrete block, the mixing and spreading of mortar and other bonding agents, and the cutting and laying of ceramic tiles. The Masonry curriculum includes a project which provides students with real hands-on house building experience. Students also become involved in many community service projects related to their program of study.

The Plumbing Program is an instructional program that combines classroom and practical
learning experiences. These experiences are designed to focus on layout, assembly, installation
and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating. They will also learn the fundamentals of
water and drainage systems, according to manuals, specifications and plumbing codes. Also
included are the installing, repairing, operating, and testing of various types of residential and
commercial heating equipment. Students gain real hands-on experience by working on the
plumbing in the student-built house. Students also become involved with many community
service projects related to their program of study.

ALLIED HEALTH Allied Health is a two-year program for 11

th graders approved by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education that prepares students for advanced education/employment in health-related fields. The program includes instruction in health-related subjects such as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, biotechnology applications, psychology, career specific skills, computer skills, legal and ethical concerns, safety, and career skills related to employment, job retention and advancement. A mandatory clinical experience is designed to introduce students to careers in health care and provide students with experience in health care facilities. The Health Assistant Program course work includes medical and dental terminology,
introduction to body systems, basic nursing skills, nutrition, professional practice, sterile
techniques, ethics and law, health services, office management procedures, instrument and
equipment identification, typing, billing, and filing. The dental component of the program will
train students in chair-side related office duties and selected dental office laboratory procedures
and dental radiography under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Dental science instruction
will include content in dental materials, dental anatomy, histology, oral embryology, oral
pathology, and therapeutics. Health Assistant students participate in a field experience to
increase their understanding of the industry.
Students who successfully complete the Health Assistant Program are eligible to sit for the Nurse
Aide Training Competency Evaluation Program. They will also have the opportunity to meet
entrance requirements for post-secondary education.

COSMETOLOGY
The Cosmetology Program is an instructional program that prepares students to become licensed
cosmetologists. The program involves training in current theory and extensive group and
individual practical training. Students are taught shampooing techniques, hair shaping, hair
coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, pressing, hair styling, skin care and make up,
and manicuring. Upon successful completion of 1,250 hours of instruction and clinical
experience, students qualify to take the State Cosmetology Board Examination. Knowledge of
contemporary products, style, and fashion are crucial for successful employment or salon
ownership.
Specialized Equipment: For participation in the program, students are required to purchase a kit with the items mandated
by the State Board of Cosmetology and MCTI. Students are also required to purchase a uniform
selected by MCTI.

The Culinary Arts Program is a program certified by the American Culinary Federation. To
meet the need for trained individuals, the Monroe Career & Technical Institute has developed
high standards of excellence using the American Culinary Federation Validation Process and
Serve Safe Certification.
The Culinary Arts Program is designed to provide students with a combination of classroom
theory and hands-on hospitality industry experience. The culinary components of the course
focus on fundamental culinary techniques, baking, dining room service, and management. The
baking portion of the program will allow students to gain practical work experience associated
with the production of breads, crackers, cakes, pies, pastries, and other bakery products for

HORTICULTURE - Floriculture & Landscaping The Floriculture/Landscaping course is designed to prepare students for establishing, maintaining, and managing businesses in the floriculture/landscaping industry. Instruction will be offered in plant identification and culture, plant pathology, equipment technology, horticulture management, crop production and distribution. Students will develop skills in planning crop schedules, propagating plants, pruning trees and shrubs, treating or spraying trees, shrubs or greenhouse crops, and identifying plant diseases and insects that may be harmful to horticulture crops.
Students will also develop skills in managing a floriculture and/or landscape business which will
include the drawing of landscape plans, installing the landscape, and maintaining the landscape.
Students will gain practical experience in our school’s greenhouse, floral design room, landscape
design room, horticulture shop, school gardens, school nursery, house building site, and

HOTEL, RESORT & TOURISM MANAGEMENT
(Nationally known as the Lodging Management Program)
The Division of Industry Partnership has formed a partnership with the Pennsylvania Tourism
and Lodging Association. Through this partnership, various schools throughout the state are
participating in the Lodging Management Program (LMP). This Program was developed by the
National Hospitality Business Alliance, which is an educational partnership between the National
Restaurant Association and the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
LMP is a secondary-level program designed for students in grades 10-12, to provide a foundation
for students to assume entry-level leadership roles within the hospitality industry and/or continue
with post-secondary programs in hospitality. The structure of LMP includes educational
components that address all the major departments within hotels such as registration,
maintenance, financial, human resources, etc. Through LMP, partnerships are established with
local hotels to provide student internships, field trips and job shadowing.

The Protective Services Program stresses the techniques, methods, and procedures that are

The Computer Networking and Security Program is an instructional program that combines classroom and practical learning experiences. The two main tracks in the program, Repair/Networking and Networking/Security, give students a broad foundation in computer technology. The technology portion of the program prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of professionals who use computer systems. The networking and telecommunications portion focuses on the design, implementation, and management of linked systems of computers, peripherals and associated software, and prepares individuals with the technical skills required to support networks and network users. The core content of this course is a focus on nationally recognized certifications. Computer Networking & Security is a college prep program. Upon completion of the program, students may be eligible to obtain up to 20 credits advanced standing at a post-secondary institution based on their career track. Computer Programming is an instructional program that teaches students critical thinking,
problem solving, and teamwork skills through the use of industry standard programming
languages. The course reflects a hands-on, project-based series in which students learn the
process of producing computer application programs, interactive website applications, and basic
game applications. Currently, students receive instruction in the computer languages C++ and
Java. Students may complete additional coursework in NET, Flash, ActionScript, SQL, or
advanced concepts in C++ or Java.
Students who wish to concentrate on college preparation may take the College Board’s AP
Computer Science A and/or AP Computer Science AB exams for college credit and/or advanced
standing at an accredited college of their choice.

Graphic Communications is an instructional program that provides a firm foundation in all
aspects of the printing and publishing industry. The work performed by the students in the
Graphic Arts/Printing program crosses all areas of the graphic communications industry.
Technological changes during the past decade have moved the printing industry from hand-set
composition to the world of photography and computers. Concentration in the area of graphic
arts will permit the student to work in layout, stripping, plate making, and press work. In

MANUFACTURING PROGRAM CLUSTER
DRAFTING & DESIGN
Students enrolled in the Drafting and Design Program will learn the fundamental drafting
techniques necessary to convert illustrations in design concepts to working drawings used by
professionals. Students will use basic mechanical drafting skills along with computer aided
technology. Students who successfully complete the program will have the opportunity to work
as entry level CAD-Technicians with mechanical, architectural, and civil drafting professionals.

ELECTRONICS
Electronics Technology is an instructional program that prepares individuals to apply electronic
principles and technical skills to the calibration, testing, assembling, and maintenance of
electronics equipment. The Electronics Program content is based upon national skills standards
developed by the Electronic Industries Association and the Electronic Industries Foundation.
Emphasis is on AC/DC principles, semi-conductor theory & applications, op-amps, electronic
control devices, digital electronics, and microprocessors. Knowledge and skills are acquired
through theory instruction, experimentation, and hands-on activities. Through collaborative
curriculum planning with colleges and trade schools, students who participate in this program are
eligible to obtain up to 12 credits advanced standing in a post-secondary program.

COMPUTERIZED MACHINE TOOL TECHNOLOGY The Computerized Machine Technology Program is an instructional program designed to give students both practical skills and related theory in machine tool operation, mechanical drafting, and welding, along with the technical mathematics, science, and communication skills essential to a career in manufacturing. Students can receive credentials from the National Institute for Metal Working Skills (NIMS). The course covers areas in industrial safety, bench work & lay-out, precision measurement, and operation of drill presses, lathes, milling machines, power saws, grinding machines, and computer numeric controlled machines. Manufacturing processes, Cad/Cam processes, and quality control are also discussed.

WELDING TECHNOLOGY
The Welding Technology Program is an instructional program designed to provide students with
a combination of classroom theory and hands-on metal fabrication experience. Welding
Technology is certified and designed by the American Welding Society (AWS). The educational
components of the course focus on setting up and operating welding, metal cutting and related
equipment. The program includes safety, blueprint reading, related math, gas welding, brazing,
oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting, pipe fitting, and structural fabricating. Students practice their
welding skills in many different welding positions using various types of welding electrodes.

Students enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program study current automotive operating
principles and repair procedures. This program, certified by Automotive Service Excellence
(ASE), and National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), is designed for
students who would like to work in the automotive service industry. Automotive technicians
need knowledge of electronics, emission control, electricity, mechanics, and hydraulics.
The need for skilled technicians is rapidly increasing. Expanded use of electronics, new
government requirements on safety and pollution control, and more extensive warranties on new

DIESEL TECHNOLOGY The Diesel Technology Program is designed to prepare secondary students for gainful employment in the transportation industry as diesel technician apprentices and diesel technician helpers. The educational components of the course focus on electrical systems, brakes, drive train, diesel engines, preventive maintenance, arc welding, oxyacetylene cutting, electronic controls, air systems, and related systems. The Diesel Technology Program includes safety, theory, and general practice. Diesel technicians must like to work with machines and be able to use both hand and power tools. PARTS & SERVICE MANAGEMENT The Parts and Service Management Program is designed to prepare secondary students for gainful employment in the transportation industry, as parts counterpersons, inventory clerks, parts managers, service consultants and service managers. The program is intended to serve the traditional as well as the non-traditional student. The educational components of the program include a basic background of business, mathematics, and automotive computer operations. Students will gain knowledge of vehicle systems, such as brakes, engines, suspension/steering, electrical, fuel systems, and air conditioning/heating. The Parts and Service Program includes safety, theory, automotive computer training, and daily operation skills. The National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifies parts and service specialists with two years work experience. ASE will issue a student one year work experience upon completion of the Parts and Service Management Program. COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (Co-op)
Cooperative education (Co-op) is a method of instruction that effectively brings about what is
best for students. The use of the work environment is a plan of education that enables the
students of Monroe Career & Technical Institute to gain practical experience in their chosen
career track. Students are accredited for becoming employed, typically a half day, within their
trade area.
Pennsylvania continues to be a leader in this effort through cooperative education. Cooperative
education has been a part of both the secondary and post-secondary school programs in
Pennsylvania for more than 50 years, having its genesis around the turn of the century.
DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS
The Diversified Occupations Program is a work-study program that is designed to combine
classroom instruction with on-the-job training in a career area of the student’s choice. Students
are responsible for finding part-time employment with a local employer. Students are
encouraged to find jobs that are directly related to the career field they wish to pursue after
graduating from high school.
The Diversified Occupations Program is a partnership between the home school, MCTI, the
employer, the student, and the student’s parents. This training program is designed to help the
student transition from school to the world of work while gaining valuable life and work
experience. This program is conducted at the student’s district high school campus.
