North Salem Vikings! North Salem High School is a learning community in which we believe ALL students can be successful. The eff ort to nurture this belief begins with helping incoming freshmen transition into our school and supporting them intellectually, socially, and personally through their senior year. Our goal is graduation for all students!

The North Salem High School Course Catalogue is designed to assist you in planning your course selections for the 2019-20 school year. Plan your classes for next year accurately and pay close attention to the following procedures:

* First, review the required classes that you expect to take.* Next, check the graduation requirements with the copy of your transcript to see if you are on

track to graduate.* Next, select classes that support your future education and career goals.* Consult your parents, teachers and counselors—each are a valuable resource to help you in

your decision-making. Academic Forecasting (the selecting of courses for the 2019-20 school year) will be held during the school day at North Salem on April 9-17. During social studies classes, current freshmen (9th grade), sophomores (10th grade), and juniors (11th grade) will complete their academic forecasting. Each spring North counselors visit Houck and Parrish middle schools to help register students for the next school year. Incoming freshmen (current 8th graders) will complete forecasting at their respective schools. Future Viking Night will be on February 21st at North Salem High School. Eighth grade students and their parents will receive a letter and a “save the date” invitation postcard with more information as the date draws closer. Mark your calendar and plan to attend! Plan your future carefully. Your decisions today will infl uence your schedule next year. What you select as courses this spring determine your future learning opportunities and your classes for next year. Vikings, don’t forget to make time to participate in clubs, activities, leadership opportunities, athletics, and performing arts. Please do not hesitate to obtain help from our staff and take advantage of all that North Salem High School has to off er.

North Salem High School off ers with our Special Education Program a variety of specialized programs to assure that students are in their most benefi cial placement. Listed below is a description of each of those programs.

Emotional Growth Center (EGC)A major goal in the EGC is teaching students who may or may not have emotional problems about the verbal as well as nonverbal behaviors involved in social interactions. We teach interpersonal skills such as making “small talk” in social settings, or the importance of good eye contact during a conversation. In addition, they learn to “read” many subtle cues contained in social interactions. The class helps students learn to interpret these and other social signals, so that they can determine how to act appropriately. The students learn about the society in which they live. Information is shared about culture sensitivity, current events, social norms, acceptable behaviors and other topics such as future careers, life goals, college and universities as well as basic fi nancial understanding.

Educational Resource Center (ERC)The ERC program provides functional academics to students with a variety of disabilities. Students are typically between 3rd-5th grade academic levels with some students at the higher levels taking classes in mainstream or LRC. None of the students are fully self-contained (all day) and minimal supervision is provided during non- academic time. ERC provides instruction in reading, written language, oral communication, math (4th grade and below), science and social skills. Students take electives in the general education setting and try to earn as many credits as students in mainstream classes. Most students are on an extended diploma option. Instructional assistants will go to academic classes with a few students or electives if there are more than 5 ERC students in the class. The ERC is an academic based program off ering more support than the LRC and is not geared for managing non-academic behaviors.

Life Skills Center The Life Skills Center is a classroom for students whose variety of challenges requires a more structured environment providing a smaller student-to-staff ratio and a higher degree of behavioral support. Students are placed in this program by the district and participate in varying degrees of Life Skills Center activities and those off ered in general education settings. The Life Skills Center encourages social/emotional growth, and provides academic and behavioral support within the context of functional life skill instruction.

World LanguagesIn the 21st Century, success will come to those with the greatest understanding of their world. North Salem High School’s World Language Department off ers three languages to give young Vikings the edge. French, Japanese, and Spanish studies teach non-native speakers to communicate by speaking, writing, and reading in the target languages. Students will be exposed to cultures which represent a large part of the world. Our Heritage Spanish courses give native speakers of Spanish the opportunity to become formally literate in Spanish while earning language credit. World Language classes prepare Vikings for careers in every fi eld and for entrance to universities across the nation. Student clubs off er additional activities and experiences in the student’s chosen language. Advanced placement tests in French and Spanish can earn college credit. Our sister school in Japan, exchange student programs, and tours of foreign countries guided by our language staff allow North Salem High Scool students to put what they’ve learned into practice. At least two years of world language is required for 4 year universities, but three years is recommended.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the French language and the culture of some French speaking nations. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be introduced. Communication in French will be stressed. Oral production will consist of isolated words and learned phrases within very predictable areas of need. Vocabulary is suffi cient only for handling simple, elementary needs and expressing basic courtesies. Utterances rarely consist of more than two or three words and show frequent long pauses and repetition of interlocutor’s words. Speaker may have some diffi culty producing even the simplest utterances. Some speakers will be understood only with great diffi culty.

Students will be able to ask questions or make statements involving learned material. Students will show signs of spontaneity although this falls short of real autonomy of expression. Speed continues to consist of learned utterances rather than of personalized situational adapted ones. Vocabulary centers on areas such as basic objects, places, and most common kinship terms. Pronunciation may still be strongly infl uenced by fi rst language. Errors are frequent and, in spite of repetition, some speakers will have diffi culty being understood even by sympathetic interlocutors.

Prerequisite: French I

The student will be able to handle successfully a limited number of interactive, task-oriented and social situations. He/she can ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and maintain face-to-face conversation, although in a highly restricted manner and with much linguistic inaccuracy. Vocabulary is adequate to express only the most elementary needs. Strong interference from native language may occur. Misunderstandings frequently arise, but with repetition, the speaker can generally be understood by sympathetic interlocutors.

The process begins with the resident, or assigned school. Parent or guardian obtains an In-District Transfer request form from either their resident school or the Offi ce of Elementary/Secondary Education. Forms are not available online or at other locations. The completed form is returned to the resident school.

For middle and high school students, if a transfer is desired within a school year, the transfer request form must be submitted between November 1 and November 30.

If the transfer is desired for the following school year, the request form must be submitted between March 1 and March 31.

The principals of both the resident school and the requested school separately review and approve or deny the request. If the request is approved by both principals, parents are mailed a copy of the approved form notifying them of the decision. The response time on transfer requests can vary but generally takes about one week.

If parents disagree with a decision on a transfer request, there is an appeal process. A letter of appeal must be written to the appropriate director of high school education. Be sure to include a copy of the In-District Transfer request and explain the reason you disagree with the decision. Please add any additional information you feel the director would need to make a decision. The director will respond in a letter detailing their decision. The director’s decision is fi nal, and no further appeals can be submitted.

Please note: Bus transportation is not provided for students who attend school on an In-District Transfer.

For more information or questions about the In-District Transfer process, please contact the Offi ce of Secondary Education at 503-399-2636.
