Historical NoteCoupland Castle boasts a fascinating history, originating in the late 1580s with the PeleTower being the last fortified building to beconstructed on the Border. Before the towerwas built, the Coupland lands belonged toSir John de Coupland who captured theScottish King at the Battle of Neville’s Crossin 1346.

The property has been extended over thecenturies and the earliest part is the four-storey main tower, probably built towardsthe end of the 16th century, after the findingof a Border Commission in 1584. Thesmaller tower was probably built after theUnion of England and Scotland (1603),when the threat from the border hadsubsided. An impressive fireplace in thesitting room within the tower, is engravedwith ‘GW 1619 MW’, representing Georgeand Mary Wallis, who owned the propertyat that time. A further interesting andunusual feature of the tower is the upperspiral staircase, which was designed fordefence by a left-hand swordsman.

During the 18th century, a separatefarmhouse was added to the south-west ofthe now L-shaped tower and the Wallisfamily sold Coupland in 1713 to SirChaloner Ogle RN. Ogle was famous forhaving defeated the pirate BatholomewRoberts, who during a brief career, capturedaround 456 ships. In 1806, Nathaniel Ogleconveyed the Castle and estate to ThomasBates, and Matthew Culley was succeeded tothe estate in 1820. In the 1820s, the lateGeorgian part of the current property wasadded and linked the tower to thefarmhouse. The Culley family sold Couplandin 1928 to the Weidner family, who in turnsold it to Sir Walter Aitchison in 1938. SirWater took an immense interest in thegardens and set about planting theimpressive arboretum to the east of thehouse.

The Castle was sold in 1971 and twice againbefore the present owners purchased it in1979.

Coupland CastleDating back to the late 16th century,Coupland Castle, with its crenelated tower, stands surrounded by mature gardens andwoodland, with a range of versatileoutbuildings. For the equestrian enthusiast, there are also stables and grazing land.

The Castle has been skilfully maintained andembellished over the years to provide strikingaccommodation that is elegant and grandiose, whilst showcasing its superb architecturaldetails, and high ceilings that enhance thesense of light and space. In addition to themain house, there is ancillary accommodationin the form of a 3-bedroom cottage within thecourtyard, and a 3-bedroom lodge.

Internally, the accommodation is arrangedover four levels and offers immenseflexibility. There are numerous generouslyproportioned reception rooms, including thebeautifully presented dual aspect drawingroom, library and the spacious dining room, all with large bay windows and wonderfulperiod fireplaces. A variety of additionalrooms provide excellent space for less formalrelaxation and entertaining, including asitting room, games room and play room. The kitchen benefits from an adjoiningbreakfast room, both of which overlook aninternal courtyard. The wine cellar is in tworooms, each with bins.

On the first floor, the accommodation in theGeorgian portion of the house is laid out toprovide a bay-windowed library, threebedrooms (two with en suite bathrooms) anda family bathroom, whilst the second floor ishost to three further bedrooms and a WC.Located above bedroom 3 is a further roomwith potential for a variety of uses.

The Tower, with its 5ft thick stone walls andspiral stone staircase, is arranged to provideself-contained living space comprising asitting room, kitchen/breakfast room, autility, 4 bedrooms and two additionalrooms. This element has been used as aseparate dwelling and has been let to tenants.

They compriseformal gardens, a kitchen garden, woodland,paddocks/grazing land, and an impressivearboretum, planted with an array ofspecimen trees, including a Pocket-Handkerchief tree from Indo China. In thespring, the arboretum comes alive with a seaof daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells.
