In act, you could say that it was an IceAge A-list o characters who rumbledand roared and congregated in the ancientgrasslands and lush pine orests throughout

what is now present-day Hemet and surrounding areas.

For a unique glimpse into lie during the Late Pleistocenescene which ended about 12,000 years ago, take an expedition

to the Western Science Museum in Hemet, located near the

Diamond Valley Lake Reservoir. Te museum, which openedin 2006, is home to a stunning collection o Ice Age ossils ohuge mammoths and mastodons, saber-tooth cats and North

American lions, giant ground sloths, dire wolves, ancient long-horned bison and extinct species o horses and camels. Not tobe le out o the crowd are ossils o birds, smaller mammals

such as rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and also snakes, lizardsand pond turtlesall o which can be viewed up close viamagniying glasses.

It was the creation o a massive new man-made watering holethat led to the discovery o nearly a million specimens in

what has been coined as Te Valley o the Mastodons. Teexcavation and construction o Diamond

Valley Lake Reservoir and itsthree dams rom 1992-1999is considered to be the largest

    earthwork project in the

    history o the United States.

Racing against time andsurrounded by loud and

lumbering earth movers, archeologists and paleontologistsuncovered a monumental array o ornaments, ceramics, toolsand a hundred thousand ossils. In doing so, they helped

preserve the Diamond Valley Lake dig sites own place inhistory, providing a much-needed connection to the ossildeposits at La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles and Ice Age sites inthe Mojave Desert.

Te stand-up stars o museums paleontology exhibits may beextinct, but they still inspire plenty o oohs and aahs. Rising up

to the ceiling are the skeletons o Max, which, at ten eet tallis the largest mastodon ever discovered in the western UnitedStates, and Xena, a 12-oot-tall, not-completely-grownColombian mammoth (not o the woolly-coated variety) tha

    lived 16,000 years ago.

Belowoot, but no less o a superstar is Little Stevie, a juvenilemastodon whose partially-buried skeleton is displayed in a pi

under the museums glass oor just as it was rst uncovered athe Diamond Valley Lake dig site. More than orty thousandyears old, it is the most complete skeleton o a mastodon yetound in the western United States.

One cannot drive down emecula Parkway and not noticethe expansive property that is home to Rancho CommunityChurch. What most people may not be amiliar with, however,is that the acility is also home to private education - RanchoChristian Schools.

Rancho Christian Schools provide a top-notch, Christ-centerededucation rom preschool through high school. Te very rstclass o seniors is scheduled to graduate in 2012. Te preschoolbegan serving children ages two to six in 1981, and over theyears the school has expanded into several distinct schools -Sonshine Preschool, K-5, Middle School and High School.Kindergarten opened in 1994, and the high school has beenadding a grade a year to reach its current status. Accreditedby both the Association o Christian Schools International andthe Western Association o Schools and Colleges, parents andstudents can rest assured that the Schools are ollowing guidelinesto ensure quality in education that is recognized internationally.

Te schools ocus on core values that are strongly Christ-centered and also to the highest academic standards. Te taglineor the Schools is University Ready, Lie Ready. Tis is clearlydemonstrated when you begin looking into all o the things theSchools have to ofer. Te academic program includes on-siteAP classes as well as partnerships with local colleges, comprisingwhat they call the Accelerated Collegiate rack (AC). TeAC program empowers students to achieve signicant collegecredits while still in high school, in concert with lie lessonsand guidance that allows RCS to succeed in graduating ...bothexcellent students and wise young men and women. Collegecounseling begins or all students in the spring semester o their8th grade year, guiding those who choose that path with morethan our years o assistance and direction. All grades participatein speech meets, and there are spelling bees in grades 1-8. Grades4-8 compete in a science air.

Rancho Christian Schools curriculum and school lie ocus onthe Tree As - Academics, Athletics and the Arts. Weve talkeda little bit about the Academics - what about the Athletics? Teschools promote a competitive, Christ-centered sports programthat challenges student-athletes spiritually, physically andmentally, by teaching lie principles that will help the student-athlete to be a productive and responsible young adult. Tis yearhas seen the rst year o tackle ootball, and the 2012-13 schoolyear will see the addition o high school boys baseball, girls

basketball, and soccer and track or all high school students. Plansor a new athletic eld are underway. Middle school studentsparticipate in competitive athletic contests in basketball, boysag ootball, girls volleyball, cheer, track, gol and cross countryHigh school students compete in basketball, boys baseball, tackleootball, cross country, cheer, track and gol.

In regards to the Arts, RCS ofers an extensive Fine Arts programbeginning in elementary grades. From theater and musica

perormances to art classes, music and drama, the creativestudent will have opportunities available to them to expresstheir aith through the arts. Enrichment classes are availableor photography, dance and pottery, just to name a ew. Teenrichment classes are aer-school programs in a myriad osubjects. Culinary arts such as baking and candy making, martiaarts such as Karate and ae Kwan Do and a nancial-planningprogram or teens called Financial Peace are some o the optionsavailable. Tere is even a class on Etiquette - truly a vanishing art

With a beore- and aer-school child care program, RanchoChristian Schools really has created a campus that meets andanticipates the needs o its amilies and students. Families areencouraged to be active in their childs education, and the schools

valuate the ocus on amily, both at home and the church amilyTroughout every part o RCS Tree As is the Christ-centeredteaching principles. Tere are weekly chapel services, and studenworship teams lead the middle and high school chapels.

Rhonda Sanderson, a parent at RCS, says, We have threechildren attending Rancho Christian School. Tey all startedat Sonshine Preschool and my oldest is now a reshman in thehigh school. We have been very happy with not only the level oacademics at the school and the teaching o Godly principles andChristian character, but also with the interest that the aculty andstaf invest in each individual child. We have been truly blessedto be a part o this remarkable school!

RCS is currently in open enrollment or the 2012-13 school yearInterested amilies are encouraged to call the school to schedulea tour. Dont delay - certain grades ll up quickly. he ancient Egyptians used it or cosmetics. Te Romansused it or bathing, cooking and peruming the air. QueenElizabeth I o England demanded resh bouquets o it every day,and the Quakers were the rst to grow it in the New World.

Just as popular today as it has been or the past 2,500 years, lavender is still considered heaven-sent by enthusiasts o theherb plants purple-hued power.

Oh, I am a lavender geek! says Jan Schneider, owner o theemecula Lavender Company which has a storeront in Oldown emecula as well as a small growing eld in the areasWine Country. I love everything about lavender. Tere is such

a romantic allure about itits ragrance, its oils, its healingproperties. And its just so beautiul when its in bloom.

Tat oral glory generally only bursts orth or a short season in

Southern Caliornia during May, June and July, the best monthsor blooming, said Schneider. And distilled rom that harvest arethe essential oils long believed to have positive efects against

    stress, depression, and insomnia.

Additionally, lavender oil has a long olklore history or treatingother physical aches and pains, said Schneider, whose store also

carries lavender-inused soaps and lotions, bath and hair careproducts, and candles and sachets.

For example, oils rom true lavendernot the hybrids

has traditionally been put on burns or centuries to preventscarring, she said, adding that there are hundreds o diferent

varieties o lavender, and oils rom each variety have diferent

levels o healing potential or ailments such as burns, headachesear aches, cuts, sinusitis, sore throats or other inrmities.

But lavender also has place in the kitchen, said Schneider, addingthat the emecula wineries and the areas Slow Food movementare acionados o LCs lavender herbs and pepper.

A couple o trips to France, where lavender is grown in vastamounts, inspired Schneider a ew years ago to start making bath

soaps and essential oil products rom the cherished herb whichthe company grows in emecula. Te lavender entrepreneur isalso planning some introductory tours o the arm this summeron a limited basis.

Down the road rom emecula is Keys Creek Lavender Farm inValley Center, a certied organic eight-acre commercial owerarm showcasing more than two dozen varieties o lavender and45,000 plants. Open to the public or ree walking tours in May

and June, the arm ofers a one-o-a-kind serene and incrediblyragrant experience, says owner Alicia Wolf.

Some o the rst things people say is that they had no idea thatsuch a peaceul and relaxing place existed in this area, said WolfNot only are they grateul, but they eel like they have ound abeautiul placenot in the middle o nowherebut instead a

Tats what Wolf discovered hersel when she encountered thearm in 2008. She ell so much in love with the place that she

October is the number one month or painting, so it may belikely youve given some thought to adding a little color toyour lie. Preparation is nearly 90 percent o the job, so whenyoure ready to start the project, consider these proessional tips:

    PRePaRing he suRFaCe

Anything in the room not being painted should be removed or

covered up, including urniture, light xtures, vent covers andoutlet covers. Apply a good masking tape to protect baseboards, door and window trim, crown molding and any other suracesnot receiving paint. o protect ooring, lay down a canvas or

    thick-mil plastic drop cloth.

When painting over an existing semi- or ull-gloss nish, thesurace must be sanded to give the new paint something to

adhere to (paint adheres better to rough suraces than smoothones). Smooth over cracks and other surace imperections withspackle and a putty knie, and then sand smooth. Viewing thesurace rom an angle will reveal any spots that may have been

    missed.

Te entire surace to be painted should be washed with trisodium phosphate (SP) or a mixture o water and bleach (or

other detergent) in a 2:1 ratio. Tis should dry completely beoreworking with the surace again. Finally, apply a primer coat suchas Ace Stain Halt to round out the prep process.

Choosing a PainLatex paints are the primary paints used or painting non-metallic suraces inside the home such as walls and ceilings. Be

aware o the diferences in nishes:

Whats more, its mold resistant, so it can be used in high-moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, too!

I you have all necessary tools at the ready, you wont have to

leave halway through your project because you orgot a cruciaitem. For latex paints, synthetic-ber bristle brushes in a variety

o at and angled tips will take care o the trim and detail work.A good hard-core roller cover and roller cage will speed the jobup and reduce the appearance o brush strokes. Dont orget agood paint tray or that roller, an extra roller cover and a 6-in-1tool or cleaning up these items when the job is done.

Its good to invest in the highest quality roller covers and brushesTese are worth the extra cost in the money and time you willsave down the road. Quality roller covers will resist matting

down and will hold more paint without dripping, reducing theamount o paint used and the number o coats required or even

coverage. Brushes will also apply paint more smoothly, requiringewer layers to conceal brushstrokes. Higher quality rollers and

brushes resist shedding and last longer as well.

The Morning necessiTyby Holly Humphreys-Reyes www.951f.com

Your mornings may be hectic, the alarm may not go of, orthe kids may not seem hungry rst thing aer waking up.Whatever your reasons may be, skipping breakast puts yourkids at a distinct disadvantage. And while you know breakast isthe most important meal o the day, approximately 40 percent o

children dont eat breakast on a regular basis.

T Mr nctyBreakast provides the uel that is needed by all bodies to start theday. When your child wakes in the morning, his or her tank isempty and it is time to break the ast so to speak.

Food gives the energy needed to unction mentally and physically.Dont believe it? Consider this: Studies have shown that childrenwho eat breakast beore school perorm better on their readingand math scores, have longer attention spans, visit the schoolnurse less requently, and are better behaved in class.

Some kids, especially teenagers, skip breakast because theydrather sleep in or because they think skipping breakast will helpthem lose weight. Unortunately, skipping breakast to lose weightis a myth.

In act, those who dont eat breakast are more likely to have agreater body mass index (BMI) than those who do, since skippingbreakast makes kids so hungry they eat extra calories later in theday to make up or their skipped morning cuisine.

ey, hty optWhy arent your children eating a healthy breakast each day?Tere are plenty o easy, ast, healthy oods to have readily availableor your kids to grab and eat on the go.

Any ood is better than no ood or breakast, but healthy oodsgive your kids the energy they require to make it until lunch. Agreat way to knock out breakast is to handle it the night beoreby hard-boiling some eggs. Hard-boiled eggs are a great source oprotein and are ast and easy in the morning. You can also warmup microwavable oatmeal or let the kids eat cereal bars in the car.Keep whole-grain, low-sugar cereals on hand that kids can eatwith low-at milk or yogurt. And lastly, keep resh ruit such asapples, bananas, and pears readily available.

Dont get caught eating one o these 4 things or breakast:1.Breakfastpastry:muns,doughnuts,bearclawsandcroissants

sure taste good with cofee, but all those rened carbs are goingto cause unwanted weight gain.2. Granola Bars: watch out or the breakast bars that claim to

give you ber, vitamins and minerals. Check the number ocarbs and sugars on the back o the label most contain thesame sugar as a pastry.

    3. Cereal: heres another popular breakast item that has tons osugar lurking beneath its surace. Only eat cereal that has noadded sugar and that contains some protein and healthy at.

    4. Drive Tru Breakast Sandwich: dont even think about headingto the drive thru or a quick breakast sandwich. Instead grab ahard boiled egg rom home to enjoy on your commute.
