A lot has changed in the last

50 Y E ARS...

In 1947, J.C. Kirby was a soda jerk at Pearson’s Drug Store and a tenant farmer in the Alvaton community of south Warren County. While he was proud of his farming roots, J.C. knew there was more he wanted to do with his life. After being urged and encouraged by many friends, he decided upon a career in the funeral business. Mr. Lewie T. Satterfield, part owner of the Satterfield-Akin & Dawson Funeral Home, hired the scrappy, curly-headed young man and started to train him in the funeral trade.

In 1949, J.C. graduated from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science and returned to Bowling Green where he worked for Lewie Satterfield and Aubrey Johnson. At that time, the funeral home was known as the Satterfield-Akin-Dawson & Johnson Funeral Home. As time went by, Aubrey Johnson ended up with full ownership of the funeral home.

In 1962, with a fire burning in his belly to help families his way and with his ideas, J.C. purchased the Cliff B. Raymer Funeral Home located at 832 Broadway Avenue. Kirby had a partner, Carleen Goodrum, who was also a very close and dear friend as well as an astute businessman. It was known as the Kirby-Goodrum Funeral Chapel. After a few months in the old two-story house, both partners decided a remodeling job was in order. They started with a chapel addition and other refinements of the day.

In mid-1963, Carleen decided to leave the business to pursue his career in the building business as well as his job with the U.S. Postal Service. After his departure, J.C. renamed the business to J.C. Kirby Funeral Chapel. With the building serving as a funeral home, ambulance center, and the Warren County Coroner’s office, Mr. Kirby saw another need for remodeling. To date, the Broadway chapel has been remodeled extensively 27 times.

In 1986, Kevin Kirby, J.C.’s fourth of six children, along with his wife, Lynn, bought the funeral home from his dad. Since then, their dedication to Bowling Green, Warren County, and the surrounding counties has proven apparent.

With hard work and public support, they were able to open another chapel located at 820 Lovers Lane. The Lovers Lane Chapel is a 14,900-square-foot facility with the most modern equipment available in which to serve our families. The latest renovation of the Broadway Chapel has allowed more flexibility for us to conduct services, along with a new outdoor area and additional parking.

Today, Kevin and Lynn continue to build the legacy started so long ago. Over the years, J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapel has seen many changes and

additions. In 1995, Bowling Green Gardens was added, as well as the Bowling Green Monument Company. Bowling Green Gardens has 50 acres of plush gardens and grave lots. Bowling Green Monument provides monuments of all shapes and sizes. We offer grave markers of simplicity to that of an elaborate mausoleum.
