Magical (IRE) winning the Irish Champion Stakes

Photo courtesy of Leopardstown Racecourse Prince A A Faisal’s MISHRIFF (IRE) is a strong second choice at 5-2 for trainer John Gosden, as the 3-year-old son of Make Believe (GB) has won three straight, including the Prix du Jockey Club (G1) two races back in July at Chantilly. His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing’s LORD NORTH (IRE), who qualified for the Longines Turf when he won Royal Ascot’s “Win and You’re In” Prince of Wales’s (G1) in June for Gosden, is also expected for the Champions Stakes, as are major group stakes winners ADDEYBB (IRE), JAPAN (GB), MOGUL (GB), PYLEDRIVER (GB), SERPENTINE (IRE), and SKALLETI (FR), who are all trading at 10-1 or under in a field that could have 16 runners. Queen Elizabeth a Worthy Co-Feature at Ascot Ascot’s $1.463 million Queen Elizabeth II Sponsored by QIPCO (G1) hardly takes a backseat on Champions Day, and the 1-mile test figures to have the biggest favorite on the card, as Sheikh Hamdan al bin Mohammad Al Maktoum’s PALACE PIER (GB) is 8-11 in the early betting off a 5-for-5 record for trainer John Gosden. The 3-year-old son of Kingman (GB) earned an automatic starting berth into the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF when he won Deauville’s “Win and You’re In” Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1) in his last start Aug. 16.

Palace Pier, who also won the St James’s Palace (G1) at the Royal Meeting in June, could see as many as 16 opponents in the Queen Elizabeth II, including Flaxman Stables and Coolmore’s CIRCUS MAXIMUS (IRE), who earned a Mile bid when he won the “Win and You’re In” Queen Anne (G1) at the Royal Meeting in June for trainer Aidan O’Brien, as well as THE REVENANT (GB), BENBATL (GB), and NAZEEF (GB), who are all 10-1 or less in ante-post betting. The $731,500 QIPCO Fillies & Mares (G1), at about 1 ½ miles, is shaping up as the most competitive race of the four Group 1 stakes on the card, as the top five contenders are trading at 6-1 or less among European punters, with Anthony Oppenheimer’s DAME MALLIOT (GB) a tepid 9-2 favorite. The 4-year-old daughter of Champs Elysees (GB) is 4-for-8 lifetime for trainer Ed Vaughan, including the Tattersalls (G2) at Newmarket in July. Mrs. John Magnier and Mrs. Paul Shanahan’s EVEN SO (IRE), who won the Juddmonte Irish Oaks (G1) at The Curragh in July for O’Brien, ALPINISTA (GB), ANTONIA DE VEGA (IRE), and WONDERFUL TONIGHT (FR), are all being well-backed in a Fillies & Mares field that could reach 13. The $731,500 QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes (G1), at 6 furlongs, has a strong 3-2 favorite in Saeed Suhail’s DREAM OF DREAMS (IRE), a 6-year-old son of Dream Ahead who is 7-for-28 lifetime and has won two straight for Sir Michael Stoute, including the Sprint Cup (G1) at Haydock Sept. 5. Lael Stable’s ONE MASTER (GB), who won Longchamp’s Oct. 4 Prix de la Foret (G1) for trainer William Haggas, is 9-2, while ART POWER (IRE), GLEN SHIEL (GB), MAKE A CHALLENGE (IRE), OXTED (GB), and STARMAN (GB) are all 10-1 or less in a field that could swell to 19.

Tiz the Law Works as Classic Field Begins to Take Shape Sackatoga Stable’s Belmont winner TIZ THE LAW, recently second as the heavy favorite in Churchill Downs’ Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby (G1), continued his preparations for the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) with a 5-furlong drill in 1:01.87 Oct. 10 at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old son of Constitution, who passed on the Oct. 3 Preakness (G1), which was a “Win and You’re In” for the Classic, posted his third drill since the Derby, with his work tab highlighted by a scintillating 57.87 5-furlong bullet move Oct. 2 at Belmont. Trainer Barclay Tagg opted to pass on the Preakness, as Tiz the Law, who also won the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in March and Travers (G1) at Saratoga in August, exited the Derby with some minor stiffness. Tiz the Law is expected to have one, or possibly two works over Keeneland’s main track as he continues preparations for the Classic. The 1 ¼-mile Classic is shaping up to have one of the most complete and dynamic fields in the 37 runnings of the race, with older stars IMPROBABLE, MAXIMUM SECURITY, and TOM’S

D’ETAT—all “Win and You’re In” qualifiers—leading the handicap brigade. Kentucky Derby winner and “Win and You’re In” qualifier AUTHENTIC, as well as the star 3-year-old filly SWISS SKYDIVER, who won the Preakness, will join Tiz the Law in looking to become the 13th 3-year-old to win the Classic, a feat most recently accomplished by Arrogate in 2016 at Santa Anita. Handicap stalwarts BY MY STANDARDS, GLOBAL CAMPAIGN, HIGHER POWER, and MIDCOURT are also expected for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, while 3-year-olds HAPPY SAVER, who won the “Win and You’re In” Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1, see race recap below) Oct. 10 at Belmont to qualify for the race, and ART COLLECTOR are possible. Kameko Passes Queen Elizabeth II, Headed to Mile Qatar Racing Limited’s KAMEKO, who was highly regarded in Saturday’s $1.463 million Queen Elizabeth II Sponsored by QIPCO (G1, see preview above) was declared Wednesday by his connections and will instead be sent to Keeneland for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF. The 3-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy won the 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket in June and the Joel Stakes (G2) there Sept. 25 for trainer Andrew Balding and is 4-for-9 lifetime. Kameko was a clear 4-1 second-choice behind the undefeated Palace Pier (GB) but David Redvers, racing manager for Qatar Racing, was not only weary of that superstar, but the ground as well, which figures to be soft after taking plenty of rain over the past 10 days.

"In that regard we didn’t want to risk a good-actioned horse like Kameko on Saturday,” Redvers said. “We would prefer to tackle Palace Pier at the Breeders' Cup, where we are considering running him in the Mile.”

Got Stormy Wins Again, Points to Mile or Turf Sprint Gary Barber’s multiple Grade 1 winner GOT STORMY, second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Santa Anita, won her second straight turf sprint Oct. 9 at Keeneland in the Buffalo Trace Franklin County (G3). The 5-year-old daughter of Get Stormy had lost her first five starts this year—all between 1 mile and 1 1/16 miles—before trainer Mark Casse elected to cut her back to 6 ½ furlongs in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint (G3), where she closed strongly for an easy win. Got Stormy is 10-for-25 lifetime, which includes last year’s Fourstardave (G1) at Saratoga and Matriarch (G1) at Del Mar, but has struggled over a softer turf course, which could be the deciding factor when Casse and Barber pick their Breeders’ Cup race at Keeneland.

“Gary and I will talk about it and if the turf course were to be extremely firm, it would be a decision (between the FanDuel Breeders’ Mile presented by PDJF and the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint),” Casse said. “It’s all going to depend on weather.”

Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic – Wertheimer and Frere’s homebred HAPPY SAVER (Irad Ortiz Jr.) remained undefeated and earned an automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic with a three-quarter length win over MYSTIC GUIDE in Belmont Park’s $242,500 “Win and You’re In” Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). Todd Pletcher trained the winner, a 3-year-old son of Super Saver who was an unraced maiden in mid-June but has clearly come a long way in a short period of time. Happy Saver broke his maiden locally on June 20—the same day Tiz the Law won the Belmont—then won an allowance at Saratoga in July and entered off a win in Laurel Park’s Federico Tesio Sept. 7. Now 4-for-4, he figures a major player for the Classic, though Pletcher indicated running isn’t a forgone conclusion. “We’re under no pressure to run him, at the same time if he takes us there we’ll look at it closely,” Pletcher said. Godolphin’s homebred Mystic Guide ran well in defeat for trainer Mike Stidham, who indicated the 3-year-old son of 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Ghostzapper would likely pass on the Classic and point to a 4-year-old campaign. Juddmonte Farm’s TACITUS disappointed in third at 3-5 after setting a slow and uncontested early pace, though trainer Bill Mott, who won the race with Cigar in 1995 and Drosselmeyer in 2011, indicated the Classic was still in the plans for the 4-year-old son of Tapit. Clarke and Paul Braverman’s HARVEY’S LIL GOIL (Martin Garcia) held off MICHELINE by three quarters of a length in Keeneland’s $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1). The 3-year-old daughter of 2015 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner American Pharoah has been a versatile performer this year for trainer Bill Mott, as she won the Regret (G3) on turf at Churchill Downs in June and was also third in the Alabama (G1) on dirt at Saratoga in August. Harvey’s Lil Goil, who entered off a second in the Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs Sept. 10, and is now 4-for-8 lifetime and Mott indicated the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) will be under consideration. Lael Stables’ MAGIC ATTITUDE (GB) was third as the favorite for trainer Arnaud Delacour, as the daughter of Galileo (IRE) couldn’t double up on her win in the Belmont Oaks (G1) Sept. 19. Video

Shug McGaughey trained the winner, a 4-year-old daughter of War Front who began her career with Chad Brown but has blossomed in five starts this year for her new trainer. Civil Union, who is 5-for-8 lifetime, has advanced up the class ladder during her winning streak, which started locally with a N1X in June and the Winter Memories in July before the Glens Falls (G2) Sept. 5 at Saratoga. McGaughey indicated that if owner Joseph Allen “feels like if she comes out of it well, it’s worth taking a chance (on running in the Filly & Mare Turf).” Peter Brant’s

Owner: Siena Farm & Tim Hamm; Trainer: Hamm; Jockey: Junior Alvarado.

Time: 1:35.82 (fast) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – Siena Farm and trainer Tim Hamm’s DAYOUTOFTHEOFFICE (Junior Alvarado) made it three wins in a row to start her career and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with a 2-length win over VEQUIST in Belmont Park’s $250,000 “Win and You’re In” Frizette (G1). The 2-year-old daughter of Into Mischief won on debut at Gulfstream Park in May and entered off a win in Saratoga’s July 16 Schuylerville (G3). She will try two turns for the first time in the Juvenile Fillies, which her trainer is eagerly awaiting. "We always thought she wanted more ground," he added. "I have all the confidence she can handle the mile and a sixteenth. She's trained like it and she acts like it." Hamm indicated Dayoutoftheoffice will head to his barn at Presque Isle Downs for a few days of down time before heading to Keeneland to begin preparations for the Juvenile Fillies. Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Swilcan Stable’s Vequist ran well in defeat as the 9-10 favorite for trainer Butch Reid, and the daughter of 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Nyquist, who won Saratoga’s Sept. 6 Spinaway (G1) by 9 ½ lengths, could also move on to the Juvenile Fillies. Time: 1:50.71 (fast) Countdown to the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile – Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister’s MR FREEZE (Javier Castellano) gamely prevailed by a neck over AURELIUS MAXIMUS in Keeneland’s $200,000 Fayette (G2). Dale Romans trained the winner, a 4-year-old son of To Honor and Serve who broke a three-race losing streak and relished some class relief, after chasing the likes of By My Standards and Vekoma in his last three starts. Mr Freeze, who is now 6-for-16 lifetime and 2-for-3 at Keeneland, was second in the Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream Park in January and won the Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) in February, and may try to improve on his local mark in his next start. “We know what he can do,” said Romans. “My job is to get him to a peak for the (Big Ass Fans) Breeders’ Cup (Dirt Mile) if that’s what we end up doing.” The Dirt Mile could be a logical next spot for Stonestreet Stables, George Bolton, and Peter Leidel’s Aurelius Maximus, a 4-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile who lost for the first time in three starts this year for trainer Steve Asmussen. Time: 1:25.24 (soft) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf – The Coolmore conglomerate of Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier’s ST MARK’S BASILICA (Frankie Dettori) beat stablemate WEMBLEY (IRE) by three-quarters of a length in Newmarket’s $665,000 Darley Dewhurst (G1). The 2-year-old son of Siyouni (FR) won for the second time in five starts for trainer Aidan O’Brien. St Mark’s Basilica entered off a third-place finish in the Vincent O’Brien (G1) at The Curragh Sept. 13. O’Brien mentioned the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) as a potential next start, though he may be given the rest of the year off to prepare for next year’s European Classics. “The Breeders’ Cup is possible for the winner, but we’re thinking Battleground will go to the Breeders’ Cup, so he doesn’t have to go.” Coolmore’s BATTLEGROUND, a son of War Front, is 2-for-3 lifetime, including the Vintage (G2) at Glorious Goodwood in July. Margins: ½, 1/2, neck Also ran: DUBAI FOUNTAIN (IRE), ZABEEL QUEEN (IRE), SHALE (IRE),

Winning Connections:

Owner: John Oxley; Trainer: Joseph O’Brien; Jockey: Shane Crosse.

Time: 1:39.10 (soft) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf – John Oxley’s PRETTY GORGEOUS (FR) (Shane Crosse) was up late for a half-length win over INDIGO GIRL (GB) in Newmarket’s $665,000 Fillies’ Mile (G1). Joseph O’Brien trained the winner, a 2-year-old daughter of Lawman (FR), who added to a resume that also includes the Debutante (G2) at The Curragh in August. Pretty Gorgeous is now 3-for-5 lifetime and is an outside possibility for a stateside trip. “The Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile Fillies Turf) is an option, but it’s more likely she’ll be put away now and trained for a Guineas next Spring,” O’Brien said. The Fillies’ Mile was run over the Rowley Mile, the same course and distance that next May’s 1,000 Guineas (G1). The race was not without incident, however, as Coolmore’s duo of SNOWFALL (JPN) and MOTHER EARTH (IRE) were third and eighth, respectively, though it was found afterwards that they had the wrong rider and saddlecloths, and in fact the former was eighth, and the latter third. Owner: Bryan Hilliard; Trainer: Phil Gleaves; Jockey: Dylan Davis.

Time: 1:09.33 (firm) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint – Bryan Hilliard’s homebred SECOND OF JULY (Dylan Davis) upset favored AFTER FIVE by a half-length to earn an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) in Belmont Park’s $100,000 Futurity (G3). The 2-year-old son of Jack Milton pulled off a 68-1 shocker on debut over the course and distance Sept. 20 for trainer Phil Gleaves and rewarded his backers again at 15-1 in the Futurity, which could be a precursor to bigger things next time. “All being well and if the horse is OK, we will head to the Breeders' Cup," Gleaves said. Breeze Easy’s After Five was favored off a fast-nose second on debut at Kentucky Downs Sept. 10 for trainer

Wesley Ward. The son of The Factor could also be a candidate for the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Video

Race: $100,000 Matron (G3), 2yo fillies, 6 furlongs (turf) Track: Belmont Park Finishing Order:

1 – ROYAL APPROVAL, 2 – UNION GABLES, 3 – MAGISTERIUM (IRE)

Margins: ¾, ¾, 1 Also ran: ALMALFI PRINCESS, FABICATE, ROSSA VELOCE, NIENTE Winning Connections:

Owner: Three Chimneys Farm; Trainer: Wesley Ward; Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.

Time: 1:09.10 (firm) Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint – Three Chimneys Farm’s ROYAL APPROVAL (Irad Ortiz Jr.) collared pacesetting UNION GABLES late and pulled clear for a three-quarter-length win in Belmont Park’s $100,000 Matron (G3). Wesley Ward trained the winner, a 2-year-old daughter of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow who has garnered quite a bit of frequent flier miles in her young career, as she was second on debut at Gulfstream Park in May then headed to Royal Ascot in England, where she was 17th in the Queen Mary (G2) in June, then returned to the states and broke her maiden at Kentucky Downs Sept. 9. Royal Approval is now 2-for-4 lifetime and looms a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup, though Ward indicated after talking with Ortiz, the mile trip in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf might be preferred over the shorter 5 ½ furlongs of the Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). "We definitely will go to the Breeders' Cup with her,” Ward said. “I'll sit down with (Three Chimneys Farm vice chairman) Doug Cauthen and (chairman) Mr. (Gonçalo Borges) Torrealba and see just which direction they want to go: the Juvenile Fillies Turf or the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Just after talking to Irad, the mile (of the Juvenile Fillies Turf) might be the better option for her, but again, we'll sit down and see how she is.” Ward won the Juvenile Turf Sprint last year at Santa Anita with Four Wheel Drive.
