Methodology

In May and June of 2014, potential graduates at Citrus College were asked to complete this survey online. Only potential graduates at that time were surveyed. The survey was conducted through the online web survey service, Survey Monkey. 315 graduates responded to the survey. Survey question analysis as well as cross tabulation analysis was performed within Survey Monkey. Report composition including chart generation was performed in Microsoft Excel and Word 2010. The degree of analysis was at the general frequencies level for each question, basic cross tabulation of questions referring to understanding of requirements by type of educational goal and a ranking of key areas of concern. Since same questions were asked as in the previous year’s survey, comparison percentages are indicated. Some questions asked the respondent to select as many choices as possible therefore the actual number of responses exceeds the actual number of respondents. Questions that allowed open ended ‘Other’ responses include a tabulated listing. Crosstab analysis was between the level of understanding of the requirements to complete specific types of programs (Certificate, Associate Degree, and Transfer to Four-Year) and the respondent’s stated primary educational goal. Additional analysis was undertaken to provide insight into key areas of concern. This analysis consisted of a general assessment of multiple questions relating to the respondent’s knowledge and level of satisfaction. Responses were combined (e.g. strongly agree with agree) and compared to the previous year’s. The difference was then ranked by the degree of difference from the previous year. The resulting table is of the questions that had the highest difference from the previous year both positive and negative. The Appendix contains the actual survey instrument used, including the questions asked and responses available.

Comments (Identifiable references XXX out.) • XXX in the counseling department has been the most helpful and significant person who guided me through my

educational plan and helped me transfer to a four year university. I now attend Cal State Fullerton because XXX helped me with such an intimidating process. Thank you XXX!

• Citrus College was a really wonderful experience for me. Great faculty, great students. • The counseling department needs some serious improvements. Perhaps increasing the time that students have with a

counselor would be best and will allow a counselor to go over everything thoroughly. • "We don't evaluate transcripts. We'd be here all day." Comments like these from the transfer center are not helpful to

the students looking for guidance. • Already completed AA, continuing at citrus to achieve AA-T. Entire college career done through DE, except Math 150

(needed instruction), and BIO 105 (needed a lab for AA-T). The DE program was a great learning experience, much more challenging than on-campus classes.

• The councilors at citrus are useless. Excuse my language, but true. I had an experience where once a councilor told me that I was not going to graduate or even make it this far or transfer. Others gave me awful advice, made me feel like i didn’t matter. But then I met XXX, the stem councilor, and XXX is the best. XXX helped me out with everything and encouraged me to continue college. I love XXX; I even promote XXX to other students.

• n/a • When adding a class that was previously failed, adding the class should be simpler. • n/a • The counseling center makes it almost impossible to ever book an appointment, whether it's in the beginning of the

semester, middle or end. I had to approach a counselor in their office and beg for them to squeeze me in because I had been trying for years to get an appointment.

• A lot of these questions do not apply to me. I already had my bachelor’s degree before returning to Citrus for the accounting certificate program. I had enough units for another degree which was a bonus.

• CSU should make golden four and classes for specific majors the same. Example: CSULA requires English 104 & for business majors CIS 111. CSUPOLY Pomona requires English 103 & for Business CIS 130. If a student applied to both schools how can they know which classes to take at the JR college level anticipating acceptance to either CSU? I took CIS 130 & Eng. 103 but was accepted to CSULA and now I have to repeat the required courses and take Eng. 104 & CIS 111 that CSULA wants. This is a confusing, waste of time & resources. All CSU's should stream line courses so the process of transfer is smoother and not redundant.

• I really appreciated the services the school provided and the help from teachers and counselors. It was a good decision to attend this school.

• I think students should be required to meet with a counselor every 2nd semester or so. I think I would have benefited from a more consistent routine with a counselor. I know that the sheer amount of students to counselors makes something like that very difficult, but maybe something can be done.

• Students should be more aware of the classes they need to take in order to transfer and get their degree. Many don't know and just take random classes.

• I'm still a little fuzzy on transferring. • The counselors should be better informed in pre requisites from various universities before telling the students wrong

information. All the counselors should provide some what of the same information, I feel that when you see one counselor he provides information and when you are unable to see the same counselor the next counselor provides very different information. All they say is "I don’t know why they would tell you that, if it is not accurate". That is very inconvenient, unprofessional, and very annoying! I also think the employees in the drop in registration area for counselor should attend students first the be gossiping in front of the students waiting in line! They should be more professional. Thank you

• I am not a veteran but my father is and I used his benefits to pay for my education. • I would suggest having a "counseling fair" day, in which case students can walk up and get quick questions answered by

counselors. Also, there can be volunteer students that are well informed about this subject that can also provide

Comments (Identifiable references XXX out.) answers students are looking for.

• Overall, I enjoyed my time at Citrus. • Hard to get an appointment for counselors • I'm not transferring just yet, 3 more classes, I will use transfer center when I'm ready ;) • I love Citrus College. • I wished that I knew more about the transferring degree and my counselors that I met could have explained why that

would have been a great option. • I had an amazing experience here at citrus college. I feel like it has prepared me so much for a four year college. Not

only the classes but my counselor XXX. I really appreciate everything, thank you! • n/a • Continue to provide Sigma and tutoring services available to students. In addition, the room set aside for studying in

the Math building. • The counseling department should've never changed the way they schedule appointments. I haven't been able to

make an appointment in person or over the phone to see a academic counselor in a year because of always being told the "come in at 8am" rule, to schedule an appointment a week in advance. and when I do that, I get told no counselors are available. Students should be allowed to make appointments in person/over the phone whatever time and day they are able to do so.

• Thank you for my degrees. • I enjoyed being part of the Citrus College Family • I had a great experience at Citrus! • Counselor appointments available online. • Keep up with the transfer workshops and email updates on upcoming events. It really helped.
