Remarks from Dr. Barbara Kirby, Associate Vice Provost, Academic Programs and Services – Dr. Kirby announced that
the Committee on Committees approved the recommendations of the subcommittee relating to CUE committee
structure. She expects Faculty Senators to communicate with the academic policy committee as we move forward with
the Gen Ed competencies and CAA discussions. Those discussions indicate that it may be appropriate to revisit some of
the Gen Ed requirements implemented in 2008-2009 along with any related issues which may come forward from GA
this Fall. Dean Mullen would like to appoint a CUE subcommittee to examine the rubric dealing with percentage of
students taking courses, the rationale for prerequisites, and co-requisites. The subcommittee will include an associate
dean, and members from the Faculty and Student Senates. Dr. Kirby thanked Chair Jameson for her leadership and CUE
members for their hard work and contributions to the Gen Ed requirements conversation.

2
Discussion: A motion was made and seconded to place IPGE 295, Science as a Profession, on the GEP IP list as a
Summer II special topic. The motion was approved without discussion.
IPGE 295 - Engineering in the 21st Century (E 102) - Spring, 2014 – APPROVED
Discussion: A motion was made and seconded to place IPGE 295, Engineering, on the GEP IP list as a Spring 2014
special topic. One member questioned if all of the introductory engineering courses were, by default,
interdisciplinary if they cover all the different disciplines in Engineering. D. Parish briefly explained how this
course integrates disciplines beyond an introductory course and the motion was unanimously approved.
NSGE 295 - Ecological Systems - Fall, 2013 – APPROVED
Discussion: A motion was made and seconded to place NSGE 295, Ecological Systems, on the GEP NS list as a Fall

Courses for GEP Category – New
ECD 225 Foundations of Cultural Competence [GK] – NOT APPROVED - 7 against, 5 in favor, 6 abstentions
ECD 225 Foundations of Cultural Competence [USD] – APPROVED PENDING
ECD 225 Foundations of Cultural Competence [HUM] – APPROVED PENDING
Discussion: A motion was made and seconded to approve ECD 225 Foundations of Cultural Competence for the
GEP GK, USD, and HUM lists. Tracey Ray, Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, was available to answer
questions from the committee. A course syllabus and short forms for each category were provided for CUE
review. Chair Jameson suggested the committee first determine if the course learning outcomes meet the
objectives of the individual categories. The issue of how many co-requisites a course can fulfill is a separate
agenda item. The committee reviewed the course for the objectives of the Humanities category first. It was
noted that the measures and outcomes provided are very generic and that it was not clear to the committee
how they relate to the specific course. T. Ray provided course background details. The Office for Institutional
Equity and Diversity (OIED) was awarded a grant from the American Council of Education to merge
Multiculturalism or Diversity Education with Internationalization and Global Knowledge. This course is an
outcome of that grant. OIED has been working closely with the Office of International Affairs on multiple
initiatives that will help students become critical and creative thinkers around these issues and how these two
schools of thought merge. This course has been taught for three semesters as a special topics course and the
department is now ready to offer it on a permanent basis. This is a very interactive course and students are
exposed to a large amount of material around Internationalization as well as Diversity Education, social justice,
and privilege. One of the things that differentiate this course is how interactive it is. Students are engaged in skill
building activities in every class and this benefits students in situations outside of class in their everyday
interactions. There are also general activities which are tailored to the student’s area of study and include
writing assignments, pre- and post-assessments, and the final project is an organizational analysis of cultural
competence. The committee asked for one specific example. C. Zelna expressed concern, which she had
previously discussed with C. Freeman, that measures guidelines do not provide clear instructions. She is in the
process of drafting revisions to the short form for next year. She offered to consult with T. Ray to revise this
action. Chair Jameson asked the committee if the course learning outcomes meet the objectives of the HUM
category. CUE agreed that overall the course satisfied the HUM objectives. Next, the committee reviewed the
course learning outcomes to determine if they meet the Global Knowledge category objectives. Again, one
member noted that the measures and outcomes provided are too generic. The committee looked to the syllabus
for clarification of learning outcomes and concluded they would prefer more course specific detail in the context
of the GK objectives. One member commented that this seems to be provided in the syllabus but is not
reflected in the short form. A suggestion was made to cut it to only one specific way the class meets each
3
outcome. As with the HUM category, C. Zelna offered to consult with Ray to revise the language of the
objectives for clarity if CUE was satisfied with the syllabus content. It was suggested that reference to what
makes this Global be included to clarify how it matches the GK category. The committee then reviewed the
course learning outcomes to determine if they meet the USD category objectives. The committee agreed the
course easily satisfies the USD objectives. Chair Jameson reviewed the options to either vote on the motion on
the floor to consider ECD 225 for the GEP GK, USD, and HUM lists jointly, or withdraw that motion and review
the course for each category individually. The motion on the floor was withdrawn. A motion to approve the
course for the GEP HUM list pending consultation with C. Zelna to revise the short form was made, seconded
and unanimously approved. A motion was then made to approve the course for the GEP USD co-requisite list
pending consultation with C. Zelna to revise the short form was made, seconded and unanimously approved. A
motion to approve the course for the GEP GK list was also made and seconded. The motion failed to pass by
show of hands, 7 against, 5 in favor, and 6 abstentions. If the short form is revised to indicate how the learning
outcomes cover both USD and GK categories, CUE agreed to review ECD again for the GK category and vote by
email.

Discussion: A motion was made and seconded to approve ENG 267 LGBTQI Literature in the U.S. for the GEP
HUM and USD lists. The representative from CHASS noted that the actions presented appear to be missing
amendments. Based on that, the motion was tabled.

GEP co-requisite - dual listing Discussion: The committee took this opportunity to review the intent of the existing GEP co-requisite dual listing practice and determine if there is a need to revisit the issue or formalize a recommendation based on recent blended course offerings and course with outcomes which successfully map to the objectives of two co-req categories. One member suggested consulting past members who served on CUE during the time the current practice was implemented for their reasoning. C. Ashwell indicated he served on CUE at that time and recalled that this was during the transition from the non-English Speaking Culture designation to GK and USD, departments were asked to decide which list the course should be on; there was never an option to list a course on both. He added that CUE did not make a decision to prohibit one course from fulfilling two co-reqs. Chair Jameson’s understanding differed. Her interpretation is that, at the time, CUE voted that one course could not count for both. Dr. Kirby, who also served on CUE at that time, recounted the task force had a challenge to limit the number of credit hours in the GE Program. There was also strong support for additional credit hours in each of these categories. A compromise was made at that time to make them zero credit yet with distinct objectives. After sharing their concerns, the committee concluded that further discussion is needed prior
4
to making a recommendation on this issue. For now, while a course may populate both lists, it cannot count for more than on co-req. C. Freeman and M. Johnson will work out the logistics of how the course will appear in SIS. Addendum

What does it mean for a course to be a “General Education” course?
o Should we have 300/400 level courses on the list? (Pre-requisite concerns; broad focus vs. narrow focus)
o Review Rubric Criteria for GEP courses (open seats; pre-reqs; course restrictions)
How much course content reflective of the GEP category objectives is required for a course to meet a GEP
requirement? Can this be defined either as percentage of lectures or by other criteria?

Degree Audit and Advising – concerns/issues with GEP requirement and clarity in audits and with advising
GEP Co-requisite double-counting –
o Can a single course complete the co-requisite requirement? Currently two courses approved as eligible
for fulfilling either USD or GK.
o Are there appropriate numbers of GK and USD course offerings for student to fulfill requirement.
