Community Bus Earlier this year we reported that our Community Bus service has now been in operation for 15 years. In addition to this information we would also like to advise all residents and bus users that our very own Joan Lewis has in her words “Done the bus” for the full 15 years. Here is her story :- Having done the bus for the last fifteen years, I can only say what a pleasure it has been for me. Although the lifting of trikes, trolleys, wheelchairs and bags is now done by my lovely driver Ed, for a good few years it kept me in trim and saved me a fortune in unnecessary gym subscriptions. I love greeting all my Bus Folk every Wednesday and Friday. It really is such a happy bus and even happier crowd, always keen to welcome and encourage new comers to our gang. Not only are we a vital service to so many in our community, in particular those who would otherwise not leave the house and make new friends, but we are unique (so I am told) as no other community council in the whole of Wales provides a bus for its residents, and for that we would all like to thank the Community Council for funding the service for us. The bus is provided by Briggs Coaches, a lovely reliable family business consisting of Billy Brigg, his son Craig and wife Aimy as well as all at “the office”. Long may we continue to run as now, having given up driving, I know only too well just how vital and appreciated this service is. Many thanks to you all, Joan Lewis And lets hear from the passengers too ....... Thanks to the bus service I still have an active social life and am able to meet up with friends weekly. Community Bus Earlier this year we reported that our Community

Bus service has now been in operation for 15 years.

In addition to this information we would also like to

advise all residents and bus users that our very own

Joan Lewis has – in her words – “Done the bus” for

the full 15 years. Here is her story :-

Having done the bus for the last fifteen years, I can

only say what a pleasure it has been for me.

Although the lifting of trikes, trolleys, wheelchairs

and bags is now done by my lovely driver Ed, for a

good few years it kept me in trim and saved me a

fortune in unnecessary gym subscriptions.

I love greeting all my Bus Folk every Wednesday

and Friday. It really is such a happy bus and even

happier crowd, always keen to welcome and

encourage new comers to our gang.

Not only are we a vital service to so many in our

community, in particular those who would

otherwise not leave the house and make new

friends, but we are unique (so I am told) as no other

community council in the whole of Wales provides a

bus for its residents, and for that we would all like

to thank the Community Council for funding the

service for us. The bus is provided by Briggs

Coaches, a lovely reliable family business

consisting of Billy Brigg, his son Craig and wife

Aimy as well as all at “the office”.

Long may we continue to run as now, having given

up driving, I know only too well just how vital and

appreciated this service is.

Many thanks to you all, Joan Lewis

And let’s hear from the passengers too ....... Thanks to the bus service I still have an active

social life and am able to meet up with friends

weekly.

Sylvia Boskey

The “Mumbles Shuttle” is a wonderful service.

And no other service has cabin staff that give you

hugs and kisses..... and mince pies at Christmas too.

Sue and Julian Thomas

Our little community bus is a godsend, with Joan

and Ed making it a happy and very appreciated

service. Long may it continue.

Sylvia Cheley

I use the service to go to Newton to pick up my

granddaughter, as my daughter would not be able to

arrange childcare if I could not get there to pick her

up.

Mrs P Hargreaves

Without your own transport Mumbles is difficult to

reach. It is a much appreciated service by all who

use it.

Shirley Matthews

I would like to express my gratitude for the

Community bus, enabling me to get out and meet

friends.

Mrs C Thomas

I wish to express my appreciation for the bus, Eddy

and Joan, I don’t know what I would do without it.

Iris Gill

The bus is a boom to all in the vicinty, well done

Bishopston Community Council.

Glenys Williams.

My husband and I use it weekly. The cheerful

greeting between passengers makes it a pleasure to

travel.

London to Pairs on a bike an update

from Michael and Marc On Saturday 6 July Michael Fletcher (Ex

Bishopston Primary and Comprehensive School

pupil) and his friend, Marc Lee, set out on the

ultimate endurance challenge; a 271 mile cycle ride

from London to Paris. Their aim was simple; set off

from Blackheath at midday and arrive in Paris

within 24 hours.

In a glorious, sunny, 29 degrees they set off at a

good pace. Marc was the better climber, but they

both arrived in Dover 40 minutes ahead of schedule.

After a ferry ride without sleep, they started the

night stages slowly, but gradually increased their

pace and worked well together, Marc leading on the

hills and Michael on the flat. Upon reaching the

Paris suburbs, their progress was hampered by

congestion, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.(

they don't have this problem in The Tour!), but with

The Eiffel Tower standing tall on the Paris skyline

signalling the finish, they were spurred on and

arrived at the finish line together in 23 hours 45

minutes. Out of 270 cyclists they came in around

50th.

Michael said that “London to Paris in 24 hours

turned out

to be one of

the best

(and

worst!)

things I

have ever

done” Marc

and I have

raised

nearly £3,000 towards SCOPE and the event itself

has raised over £300,000.

We would thank everyone who has kindly donated.

Further donations can still be made at

Bishopston Community Cinema Is now in its 10

th year.

In 2003 Anthony Hall, a member of St Teilo’s

idea to show films in the Church Hall. At first the

Community Cinema Group were hired as they had

their own equipment. Films shown included

Calendar Girls, Pride and Prejudice, Pirates of the

Caribbean and many more.

Two years ago they bought their own projector,

large screen and speakers, and have since shown

Australia, Marigold Hotel and Skyfall.

September at 7.30pm in

the Church Hall in The Glebe, Bishopston.

PACT – Partners and Communities

Together At a meeting on 17

th July residents received reports

from the Police and Ward Councillor Keith Marsh

regarding the objectives previously agreed.

Don’t forget the PACT meetings give residents the

opportunity to voice concerns on matters linked to

the Police, Local authority and their relevant

partners in the Community.

Next meeting will be 7.30om on Wednesday 18th

September at Bishopston Community Centre.

Meetings are open to all residents. So if you feel

you have something you wish to bring to the

attention of the group please come along. If we

don’t know about it we don’t know if we can do

anything about it.

Road Safety Concerns have been voiced about inconsiderate

parking of cars on pavements which forces

pedestrians, including children, to leave the safety

of the pavement and have to walk on to the road to

pass these cars. Such a shame we have to mention

this, as to most sensible drivers it is quite obvious

how dangerous and unnecessary parking a car

mounted on a pavement really is, particularly those

people doing this outside our local schools waiting

for their children !!

It is not unreasonable for footways to be kept clear

for pedestrians to use. Please, before you park on a

footway think Pedestrians !!

Hedges Attention has been drawn to locations where,

hedges are encroaching on to highways causing

problems for drivers and/or pedestrians.

Residents are respectively requested to ensure that

their hedges do not protrude beyond the inner edge

of an adjacent footway. Pruning a hedge in line

with your boundary will ensure that the maximum

width of the footway is available for pedestrian use.

Want to shed a few pounds ?? Why not become a Newsletter delivery volunteer,

excellent exercise, lovely fresh air and you only

have to do it every three months

Interested ? contact Nigel Richards on 233058.
